- howtoplaysaxophone.org/guardal... This is my personal in-depth review of four Dave Guardala saxophone mouthpieces. These include two originals which are the MBI and the King models. The other two are the MBII and the MBII FatBoy. These are newer models made by "the man" Nadir who has taken over the Guardala mouthpiece name and manufacturing.
I have been playing professionally on a Dave Guardala original Michael Brecker model mouthpiece since 1990. This, along with a Vandoren Java #3 reed has been the perfect saxophone equipment set-up for me.
The second Guardala piece I got was his original King model which was designed after the King Curtis rock and roll sound he was so famous for. I have to say both these models have been just great for me. Giving a real full bright and big tone.
The mouthpiece you use on your saxophone is the most important piece of equipment you can get... yes, even more helpful in changing your sound than the saxophone itself! This is why so many saxophonists are always looking for that perfect mouthpiece. Some never find it because they never stop trying new ones.
A few decades ago there just weren't much more than a handful of metal saxophone mouthpieces available but these days that's all changed because there are a lot of people making them now. Видеоклипы
Nice rundown Johnny.... thanks for posting.
much respect to you Johnny for your patient informative information.
Johnny thank you very much for your experienced insights. Have not played sax for about 26yrs and I am eager to resume. Having a hard time settling of a model. Looking at the Buffet 400 series alto and tenor. You helped me see that mouthpieces are a big part of your sound.
Great and informative information Johnny, your reviews along with being able to hear the unprocessed sound gives the viewers an honest review. It is sorta like being able to kick the tires when buying a used car.
Excelente tutorial...gracias maestro Johnny !
saludos de Argentina.
Nice video. The King is more focused due to a smaller throat. This can most easily be seen by looking inside from the shank end. The King baffle is usually a little longer than the MB2 to give more brightness.
I have some brass blanks and his original drill press he used back in the early 80’s. That’s only because I’ve known him since we were 12 years old.
No need to go any further than the throaty punch of Fat Boy... almost quit playing Tenor as a kid because I hated the concert-like wimpy sound of my Aristocrat. On TV, those live rock shows, the Tenor just sounded sooo cool, but... not mine. Then in HS, I FINALLY got a music teacher who played professional sax. In my 11th year, he opened up my world and taught me about mouthpieces; suddenly my tenor was my world. Then I lose my horns in two floods.
ah shit! Sorry man....ouch!
Hi Johnny, I know that tip opening is pretty subjective as many other features on the sax, but may I ask you what opening are the single MPs you use in the demo?
Hey Johnny do you have a lesson for this Jr. Walker song? oh do the MPs come with ligature if not what kind do you recommend? Thanks
I've a Traditional vintage D. Guardala model. Amazing sound. I' like it. Do you know it?
amazing video bro , thank you very much.........
I vote for MBII FatBoy. Its not for playing Bossa Nova although there could be room for a new version "Girl from Ipanema" Thank you for the good information and your willingness to lay it all out there. You amaze me with your talent but also I am shocked you want to help us sax players who are not as talented.
Just curious out of the 4 that you played at the end which one is your "go to" model...
It seemed that you played a lot more comfortably using the Guardala King.... you took more risks... more flourish and seemed to have more fun with the King... just curious...
Thanks, Joe
Killer job on the Jr Walker sound... by the way. Great tune great job.
+Joseph Miller Yes, the King and MBI have been my mp's for 25 years...the other 2 new Guardalas I just received a couple days before doing the video so are very new to me. I now favor the Fatboy though.
Nadir handmade me a King for alto. It's magnificent.
He made one for me too. It's great.
What kind of microphone ?
Amazing sound 🔥🔥🔥
What is the difference in Sound from the MBII, MBII Fat Boy and MBII King guardala mouthpiece?
Thank you!
well, I'll leave the difference in sound up to you, if you can hear any but I can tell you that the MBI is my favorite and the easiest to blow.
Hey Johnny I recently bought a new Mouth piece about 2 days ago I've been testing it out and my throat is very sore like if I'm sick but I'm not. Is that normal?Or Do I just have to get use to it .
never experience a sore throat but new mp's need time to get used to, especially if it's a lot more opened than your previous one.
MB 1 is 7*....correct?
Hey Johnny what's your opinion on the selmer s80 c*?
+Christopher Bouzane I think it's one of the better mp's to use when starting out on the saxophone.
What ligature are you using at MBII King, MBII and MBII Fat Boy?
Winslow
What is the company? Better than vigilante or the laser trimmed (which weren't very consistent )
+Jason Weismann The guy's name is Nadir and his site is Nadirsaxwind.com. he's a master mouthpiece maker with his own models as well as the Guardala replicas.
Johnny, could I know your opinion about JodyJazz Jet 7* mp?
tried one a few months ago and it was really nice! free blowing and great tone.
Thankyou very much for sharing your feedback!
yes tried one and really liked it.
Hello Johnny, May I know what is the name of the music sheet in the video? where can I download? Thanks!
+Raymond Yung Bolero, you might find it online.
Thanks Johnny!
Cuál es la diferencia en tocar con metal a pasta, gracias.
Gaurdala King with a Winslow ligature and a Rico Royal 5 reed then you got it made baby.
FAT Boy sounds best from Detroit. It would be a great comparison to understand what the intonation differences are. I have a great metal piece, but chase the intonation all over the place. My tamer mpcs have better intonation. That's the challenge in all of this is to find a piece that makes the noise one wants, and still plays in tune for you. Good luck!
do u use a mark vi
+alek D Yes
Bom dia qual a numeração e abertura da Guardala MB II?
114"
Sou seu fã!
👏👏👏🇧🇷
Brother I own a Guardala alto mouthpiece. They made em... Just maybe not anymore. Great piece btw
+Precision Booking Yes "they" made em but Dave Guardala didn't. There were some cheap knock-off a while back ...now a company in Germany makes em and they bought the designs and rights from Guardala. These are high quality again,.
@@saxjohnny Yes, he certainly did. I have an alto King bought new in '91, with Dave's own needle-dot engraving on the shank. I play/have played with folks who play original alto Studio and Bebop/Traditional models as well. Dave also made pieces for soprano and baritone.
Sou do Brasil. Como faço para adquirir uma boquilha sax tenor David guardala MII
www.howtoplaysaxophone.org/guardala-saxophone-mouthpieces/
Pienso que tambien tiene que ver de un sax estudiante a un Server,.
I didn't like my otto link tone edge, it was way too dark, and empty.
well, that's why I moved on to a Guardala
Why so espensive ??
You play the wider mouthpieces differently, more lipping the pitch.
The King looks more like a MB-II... but it's not uncommon for original Guardala's from Dave.
The main difference was the restriction down in the chamber: the MB's (I or II) are "open chamber", the King's had a small restriction in the chamber... so basically high baffle pieces with a small chamber.
The Otto Link you use looks like an EB Otto Link... and it sings.
Modern Links plays like a crap: dark, dull... chocked in the high register.
That MBI sounds off key bro. I'd lose the others if I were you.
