- howtoplaysaxophone.org/fix-sax... A quick temporary fix for when your saxophone neck cork gets too old and compressed to properly hold your mouthpiece in place. Replacing the neck cork with a new one is the best long-term fix but here's what you can do to easily and quickly bring that old and much too compressed cork back to life.

Nice. I don't have time to get mine replaced before a show in 2 days. Great trick.
I've done it with steam, doesn't need a lot, just wave it over the steam for a few seconds at a time, and viola, plump cork. ;)
Thanks for the little trick. Just picked up an old Buescher Aristocrat tenor and the cork was almost letting the mouthpiece slid all the way over the cork. Lite it up and now it fits at half way..Thanks
Excellent Instruction Master, thank you very much.
Worked well, thanks for the tip!
Thanks, mate. You saved the day!!
one of my favorite ways to fix a cork is to boil water with a lid and then when there's enough steam hold the neck over it and it really expands but this lighter method helped alot when I'm not at a place to go boil some watter thanks!
+ttam0324 ya I here you, I boil my corks when I'm bottling my wine, just didn't occur to me to put my sax neck in boiling water but thats definately a way that works as well.
I did it It works thenks new mouthpice and thid fixed it grate tip.
Thanks Johnny
Boil a small cup of water in a microwave. Dunk compressed portion of cork in the water for 2 seconds, then dry with towel, re-grease . Works amazingly well.
Have you tried just dunking it in a cup of hot water, Johnny? That can work too.
I did one in the steam from a kettle once, and the glue under the cork melted (on a Chinese soprano, so glue, not shellac). I could see that happening with the lighter too, if it was done for too long.
Excellent video. I play alto. What is your preference on this: Do you take off your mouthpiece each day and put back on the following day or do you leave mouthpiece on neck cork and take off as needed, for example travelling? Which way protects the neck cork from tearing etc....? Thanks a lot.
I have a bad habit when it comes to this... I always leave my mp on the neck when I'm at home, also the reed. for days at a time. I've been doing this for about 30 years, only changed my cork 2 or 3 times so don't worry too much about it.
Very useful tip Johnny, didn't know about that one. I could have used that tip when my bro-in-law gave me an LJ Hutchen Alto Sax LOL Hope your touring is going well, thanks for sharing.
+Michael Bishop That's my backup alto! It's quite good actually :)
+Alec Yes, it is a very respectable Saxophone. The model my bro-in-law gave me needed some work, but when it's up to playing standards it is a very decent Sax. I had actually thought about buying a brand new one before I got my Trevor James Saxophones. I would have no complaints about an LJ Hutchen..pair it up with a decent MP and you're good to go :)
Michael Bishop Yep
A paper strip or plumbers teflon tape will do it on the road. Keep some in the case. For home use, I bought an electric clothing steamer on ebay, and blocked 2 of the 4 holes; it shoots a jet of steam and swells the cork nicely.
wow, new one for me thanks!
Thanks, but what about a neck cork that's too thick? Can you sand it or something? Whoever replaced my neck cork went way to thick.
you got the wrong guy for the job. they're supposed to test it with your mouthpiece(s)
Gaffer's tape does wonders also
tremendo bueno gracias
You do that with a lighter too many times and the cork will come off on you. Plumbers tape works great for a quick fix.
I would add that once you have a new cork, if it is very hard to put on, you need to sand it down a little, or you will run into this compresion problem sooner than later.
Johnny, have you got books or something in russian?
no
Add some cork grease or paraffin wax to the cork before you put a lighter to it. It'll help absorb the wax/grease into the cork and help prevent you from burning the cork.
good tip!
thank you sir. Adding a lighter to my emergency kit.
2:28 How to fix it. I think steaming is a better method.
Мне понравилась кожа вместо пробки
i use dental floss in a quick pinch i never have a lighter with me.
good one!
3 seconds in water that has just boiled will eliminate the risk of burning your cork and works equally well.
