    I believe this is one of the best explanations I heard about what a saxophonist must be looking for. Mr. Bill Evans is definitely one of those sax player to follow. I highly recommend this video to those who are serious saxophonists. Very inspiring! Thank you Mr. Evans for sharing all that knowledge. Blessings!

    It's a luxury luxury ... it's a pleasure ... it's a genius ... they are two geniuses ... they are three geniuses !!! .... phrasing without thinking too much let everything that has been learned flow and assimilated by what we hear and we are able to practice and retain and that the brain decides and dedicate only to feel the jazz! Pure feeling .... what happiness !!!!

    Started out as a guitarist many years ago and recently acquired a couple of saxes which I love. I can recommend to any old musician in need of inspiration that learning a different instrument will recapture the early delight and excitement you felt when learning your first instrument. Jazz, first the folk music of Black African Americans, then White Americans, has become the musical language that people of all nations love to play now. To think that it is a relatively new 'invention' - a little over 100 years old - is remarkable and, as far as I know, a unique phenomenon in music. My guess is that it has become so popular because it is essentially about freedom of expression in a world of crushing uniformity.

  • @thierryvidal2758
    @thierryvidal2758 10 лет назад +1

    Yes, he’s right about that, "saxophone is just another language". Imitating one's idols’ sounds, reproducing the way the masters blow is a good approach to understand saxophone idioms. Just like boning up on patterns, being able to sound rather like Rollins, Coltrane, Getz or everybody is not only a good exercise for beginners, but also a good way to learn what the jazz language is, and to develop his own syntax. "Speaking saxophone", as he says ! A great teacher, definitely.

    So interesting to compare this with the James Carter master class.
    Both are true masters of the instrument, both know so much, but their approach is so different ! That's the beauty in jazz.

      +Joe Schmo Go see James Carter and sit in the front row and hear the actual sound of his horn. He doesn't record that well because he is so dynamic. He sounded so big and crazy and his extended techniques are without compare (on virtually all woodwind instruments.) have some respect Joe Schmo!

    • @joeschmo1332
      @joeschmo1332 9 лет назад

      Nothing to do with respect sweetie, it´s about good taste. You haven´t heard the good players live. By the way I´ve never come across any real good sounding female players have you? :-) He doesn´t record well? what a load of rubbish, keep practicing you obviously have no idea.

    • @jessesheehan4051
      @jessesheehan4051 9 лет назад +1

      +Joe Schmo I'm sure I've seen way more than you. Artists like sonny rollins, wayne shorter, joshua redman, chris potter, joe lovano, bert wilson, john zorn etc. etc. Obviously you're not much of a player or you would respect all the work that goes into it.

    • @joeschmo1332
      @joeschmo1332 9 лет назад

      You have no idea what I have seen in my 40 years as a pro player, and indeed who I´ve played with, so your comment is unfounded and really dumb. Fact is I´m still entitled to my opinion even if it pisses you off. Get practicing instead of trolling on here! and get a life sweete, treat yourself to an LA Sax for Christmas :-) :-)

    Sorry, I thought he was there to promote Mariachi brand horns, and that it was a new horn. I like his sound, as it is similar to mine, but Anton's sound is warmer, with a very nice core, and a nice amount of edge. I love the way both of them play AND sound...Bill is amazing (with the same mouthpiece as mine) and Anton is awesome-great sound on the Francois.. I guess I will only make positive comments in the future : ) Apparently, I'm "killing music", according to Isaac!LOL.. GREAT VIDEO! Thanks!

    Great Playing. I would agree with his remarks about wanting to not limit yourself and be able to play styles, but its important that you play within the style of music you are playing. I've seen plenty of really good players overplay on these types of gigs, and thats just as dangerous as just playing blues scales.

    By the way, I give a LOT of credit to players who can make a cheap or bad playing (leaky) horn sound great! Check out Patrick Bartley, who is an up-and-coming Jazz GREAT! I heard a recording of him playing a cheap horn (maybe a Yas-23 or something) that apparently had a lot of leaks, and he sounded like friggin' Charlie Parker, Kenny Garrett and any other great rolled into one! That was when he was 17...

    Even though saxophones barely change the sound anyway. Its like not even 5% of your sound. I have a Yas-23, a 1924 Frank Holten, a 1954 Pan American and a Selmer Reference 54 Flamingo. No matter what I play though you can still tell its me though. Barely any change, its all about what can YOU make the horn do. Check out Phil Wood's masterclass, you might find it interesting.

    Man, Bill was only playing his own Selmer Mk VI at the clinic. Sorry that you didn't like his sound

  • @saxjamin
    @saxjamin 12 лет назад

    I did like his sound, but Anton's sound was "better" on the recording, perhaps because of camera angle difference between the two. The tenor Bill was playing looked like a different brand, and I thought he was doing the clinic as a promotion for Mariachi horns. Sorry..I was wrong.... Both guys are great- I'm simply pointing out sound quality, which I'm right about. Maybe I don't like the Guardala sound any more..not compared to that Francois Louis, OR maybe Anton has a better Mark VI? Maybe..

      Bill is playing his horn here.....I like his playng here more then Anton.....more rhythmically and melodically,logicall playing....about sound .....it is really very personal....for me Anton is sounding more vintage, dark....Bill sounds more "modern "....I like Bill's sound more.....

  • @saxjamin

    If Bill were playing his Selmer, he would've had a better sound. The Taiwan horns (which I assume that Mariachi brand is) do not have the core and vibrance of the Mark VI, SBA or any other vintage horn. Eventually they may, because they are constantly improving. I'm sure they are good for the price, and it sounded great when Bill was playing...until Anton started playing, that is... I gotta try the Francois Louis, but I may have to sell my handmade Guardala Studio first!

By the way, I actually sell Taiwanese horns that are excellent, but that warm core resonance is still lacking. I stand by my remarks. Thx

    Too many notes, compared to too little meaning ones. Defining ones. Core ones.

    • @MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out
      @MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out 8 лет назад +1

      too many notes for you, not to many to play with Miles fucking Davis. caca. the chord tones, the bluesey notes, or defining tones as you describe them, are there.
      they are simply run in a way you can't comprehend, or don't like.
      as i could not comprehend Tatum. I said the same silly thing about Tatum.
      "too much fluff, filler, extraneous notes.! well, that was caca, what i said about Tatum.
      This is, as he says, bebop. or straight ahead Modern jazz.. It's fast, it notey.
      It is what it is.
      You want less notes and more chordal, identifying tones listen to
      blues and Prez or some adult contemporary Fuzak.
      At 10:02 he spells it out. Either you want blues and pentatonics and chord tones, or you want IT ALL. I want it all.
