Alex I want to thank you for the fine job you did in writing the two publications I have purchased covering the in-depth operation of the RX-10 and the RX-100. Both Guidebooks have gone a long way in making the use of these cameras such a enjoyable experience. Thanks again!
I just bought the Sony rx100V camera and after stumbling across your video för mark III and learned you have written a book about it, I started to search for one for markV. I´m really happy to have found it and I just bought it hoping to get a better grip of my new camera. Thank you!
I love it, but need a bit of guidance which I now will receive :) Had a Nikon D5300 before but needed something that I could take along on hikes etc easily

I cashed in all my lens and cameras (two) to B&H...And bought the RX100m3 to replace carrying a bulky camera on vacation. But I wanted a better than iPhone capability. This camara more than met the needs I was expecting...in fact it is as good as my SLR's...
In response to the question about wireless flash, there is no built-in support for wireless flash with any of the 3 Sony RX100 models. Only the RX100 II has a hot shoe, into which you can insert a radio transmitter to trigger an external flash. All of these cameras have a built-in flash unit, so you can trigger an external flash using an optical slave.
i have your book and it has been soooo helpful! i recently got the camera and have been reading the book for a few days prior. the sony booklet is... how shall we say, diminutive? anyway, GREAT work! it's so nice to have a concise walkthrough of the options.i just field tested last night and having the logic and examples behind the options and functions was so much easier to recall than a dry listing. excited to see you have a video as well!! :D
Thank you for this video...Great information and great presentation! I have been wanting this camera for a little while now and have been saving my pennies, not quite there yet! I have also been feeling that it just might be a little too much camera for me, although, it would be THE camera and probably for a very long time so I would have time to learn all about it. Seeing that little sneak peek of your book at the end, has made all that nervousness go away! It looks wonderful with tons of information and graphics -- I need it all to learn new things. I will definitely be checking out your website...right now, as a matter of fact! Thank you and well done!!
How the hell do you write a book that big in such a short period of time since the cameras release!! Kudos on that and also for the information on what is out there. I have just bought the MIV for myself and will give the MIII to the little woman for her upgrade. absolutely love the camera for night time shots as most of mine are at parties etc. Good job. :-)
@Alex White you link to the Photographer's Guide to the Sony RX100 III (paperback): goes to the wrong book. It goes to the RX10 guide. Because of Sony's numbering system it's easy for people to mistake that and get a book for the wrong camera if they don't notice.
Video is well done and informative. But, I would HIGHLY recommend your book. I own a NEX6 and have a couple guide books for that camera. Neither of them are as well written, easy to read or helpful as your book(s) for the RX100 series. Nice work Alex.
Yes, the RX100 III camera can output the live view through its HDMI port in recording mode, so you can view the scene on an external monitor or record video to an external video recorder.
Hi there - I'd like to use my RX100 M3 and mount to my telescope eye piece. Which pieces do I need to buy? I wasn't sure if I need that first piece that you connected a filter too or not.
You need to get a filter adapter that attaches to the front of the lens and allows the use of 49mm filters or other accessories. Then, what I did was purchase a 49mm Digi-Kit from telescopeadapters.com. Once you attach the filter adapter and the Digi-Kit items to the camera, you can attach the camera to a standard telescope eyepiece. You have to be careful, because the connection between the camera and the telescope will be somewhat delicate, but you can get good results.
Excellent thankyou for your short review, I have a rx100 mark 1 and am about to upgrade to the mark 3, but would like to know if the play memories timelapse app stitches the timelapse for you (In camera) as I do wild camping on mountains and would like to check the timelapse I have just taken on the screen. I wondered if you might know if it does thanks Tim
I'm not sure what you mean by that question. The camera has a zoom lens built into it, so it does not need to connect to a zoom lens. You can get a filter adapter that lets you attach a supplementary lens, but I don't recommend doing that, because the adapter is not strong and adding another lens would put a strain on the camera's lens. You can attach the camera to a telescope using an adapter if you are very careful. Any standard telescope eyepiece will work for that purpose.
There is no way to make a microphone connect electronically to the camera as far as I know, though you can attach an external microphone and sync the audio to the video using software. Here is a post that shows a way to attach a Zoom recorder to the camera: www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53851448.
I don't have the camera anymore, so I can't test it to be sure. My recollection is that the camera will fit into the case with the filter adapter attached, but it could be tight, and if you have a filter attached to the adapter, it might not fit.
Do you think you can use a ring light with this camera? I am a novice. If i purchase a filter base ring or adapter...then would I be able to add on a ring? Thank you for your video.
Alex thank you for your depth review of the RX100m3 I was thinking of getting a nex 5r or a hx 400v. I would to get a 100m but money is a factor only if I can find a used one at a good price. Please let me know what you think of the other 2 cameras. I could some help. Thank you.
Bruce Cuff Hello, Bruce -- I'll give you my thoughts, though I have to point out that I have not worked with either of the other 2 models -- I have only read about them. In my opinion, the choice boils down to your own needs and preferences. The HX 400V is a fine camera with a very long zoom range and a larger body than the others, but with a small sensor. It would be an excellent choice for casual wildlife and sports photography, and general use on vacations, etc. The Nex 5r, of course, takes interchangeable lenses and has a larger sensor that will yield excellent large-sized prints and good defocused backgrounds. But, if you want a camera that combines some of the best features and images available in a very small package, which you can always carry with you easily, I would opt for the RX100. It really is an excellent choice, if you can live without the longer zoom.
Alex I ended up getting a sony nex 5r at a good price could not afford a RX100. I am trying to learn as much as I can about it even tho I did a lot of research before I got it. Alex! Reallly good. Esp liked the telescope adapters. I wonder if there is an adapter for prime focus (no eyepiece)? How's the photo quality done with the eyepieces?
