My Yorkie actually loves to have her hair brushed, slowly and calmly, from her head down her back to her tail. Five or ten minutes of that and she is ready to just close those eyes and snooze!
2:37 What you say here is something that was super-important for me to understand! Realizing this, and then giving an outlet for the specific behavior that was bothering us has helped so much. We now play games that lets him do those behaviors in a structured and controlled way. Sometimes you can overlook the obvious when you overthink things.
My 4 month old lab has trouble settling at night at times. He gets hyper and nippy and sometimes barks while other times settles in a few minutes. Walks work sometimes for us, other times revs him up a bit. I bought some of the puzzles Michelle has shown but again, it's all balance. Snuffle mat and lick mat (loves that) and the 3 tier bone puzzle. We bought a pen when I brought him home because kennel was not liked. He has both now and it works out well, the kennel in the pen. ; ) I found with biting, when I would get angry or raise my voice because I was stressed, he was much worse. ; (
Deb, it sounds like you are being very attentive to what your puppy needs. Good for you! Here is our video on Crate Training at Bedtime: ruclips.net/video/NTZd6rZlqPk/видео.html
I bought a lick mat for grooming time. 😳. I coated it in peanut butter and froze it. Omg. Our puppy, a 7 month old newfiepoo, was so excited her mouth was foaming by the end! She had just as much energy afterwards. I was able to get her completely combed out though! So it was a win in that department! I need to find a lower value treat to put on the mat. Maybe then she won’t be so excited instead of being calmed.
Can't wait to try some of these. Our 4 mos old Ruby was sooo restless this evening. Could not calm herself. Just ordered one of the sniffer rugs to try. Thank you for the tips! Going to get a kong type toy too.
Great idea! If your puppy is really young, sometimes the Kong can be frustrating because the hole to reach the good stuff is a little small. You might find a West Paw Toppl is a better fit for a puppy. www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/Toppl
Michele, you are saving my life! My puppy, Penny, isn’t so hot on licking. Lick mat-5 min max and left most of it there. And not interested in the kong either. BUT, that Kong will be a good holder for her tendon chews! Bingo
hehe! Some owners would love nothing more than a couch potato. Others want a fitness buff. Either way, just train for it and watch your pup for signs that it's working for him/her too!
I have a 9 week old rough collie. He’s terribly wild. I have lots of different things for him to chew. He wants to run loose. I have a lucky No problem potty training. He wants to chew everything! That aren’t his . I have a licky Matt. I put an egg on it and freeze it.
He probably enjoys that licky mat! Be sure to use puppy proofing to keep him away from areas that he should not chew. The more he chews on things he should not, the harder it will be to break him of the habit. Prevention is your #1 goal!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Trying my best. He’s a wild little guy. Was on a farm . Running with his parents, litter mates and grandkids Please tell me what flea and tick prevention to use . He’s almost 9 weeks old
Do you have a bully stick you like? I find my pup eats the sancho & lola 6 inch one I bought way too fast. I did love the West Paw suggestion. He loves it more than the Kong and I love layering it. He also likes the snuffle mat. I need more that take a little more time. : )
It sounds like you have some great options for calming and enriching activities. Bully sticks are okay as long as the ingredients are clean and your pup is supervised the entire time.
So like for example would a 15 minute outing and then coming back in for cool down time for 15 minutes with that settle the dog or would the cool/calm down time need to be longer?
Good question! That depends on the dog and how exciting the outing was. But start with 15 minutes of a cool down and see how it goes. You might have to adjust your outings to be a little less exciting (more sniffing, less running!) which could help the cool downs.
We discourage bedding for dogs under a year of age. Don’t worry, the floor of your home or the dog’s crate is comfortable enough for him or her! As you may already know, bedding often becomes a chew toy and has the potential for dangerous choking or intestinal blockage. My 3 month old puppy is the craziest around 9 pm. I dont want to give her a bunch of treats so late, because I don't want her to have to poop in the middle of the night!
Thanks for watching How To Calm Your Dog Down When They Need To Relax. Which tip from the video did you find most helpful?

Please discuss that question with your vet.

Any info on how to keep your pup from shredding their bed?

Uh oh I think the mic/audio is a little off on this one
Thank you for your feedback!
Try "Thundershirts".
We do not recommend using "Thundershirts" to help your puppy settle into a nap or to encourage rest.

A cool down activity could be a great idea. We hope some of the tips in this video were helpful!
Mine thinks it’s party time at 9pm as well. I’ve done all these ideas and nothing works. He’s driving me nuts
