    Good lesson for teaching and avoiding mistake early on but no info or advise on cases where mistake is already made where value is lost to name and come command. If value to commands are lost do we need start over with a new vocab? Both name and come commands have been ruined by family memebers using it abundantly..

    Personally I like to use the dog's name as a "look at me and await instruction" command, not a recall. This helps in many situations, such as when you have multiple dogs in a pack, you can speak to individual dogs by using their name followed by a command and the other dogs understand you aren't talking to them. Or when your dog is far away and you want them to stay at a distance but pay close attention to you.

      I say touch so that she touches my hand. Down the road this is awesome because then you can just put out your hand and your dog will run to boop it. I have a very soft voice so hand commands are essential at dog parks.
      My German shepherd picked it up instantly. My Aussie is doing well. As long as she’s not distracted along the way. But she usually remembers why she was coming to me and finishes well.

    At one point, the word “come” had become over-used and lost meaning. (Terrier!!!). I was playing hide and go seek one day and placed doggo in a sit/stay command in backyard. Then went to front yard and hid behind shrubs. “Pssst” was the release word and this game was so VERY fun for my Westies that the sound “Pssst” became my new weapon for instant recall. The bonus was that it is also such a polite sound that doesn’t clue in others. It was awesome for camping and visiting because only my dogs were clued in.

      My dog who usually has decent recall got out of his harness on a walk(It just randomly came unclipped) and he ran to a dog that was in heat. He is fixed but he would not listen to me if my life depended on it. The dog he ran to did not react well and neither did the owner, it was a lowkey dog fight but the owner stepped it up about 100 points by yelling at me as if I was the worst person in the world for letting that happen. I was so scared for my dog and I blame myself for not having a stronger recall. Brushing up on his recall now.

  •  Год назад +2

    Im a native Spanish speaker and I decided to translate some recalls and commands into english because my family don't stop using them 🤣 But fortunately,my family works almost all day and Im alone in the house with my puppy and she responds to "Mari" (her name) and 'Vení" (means "come" in my language) very well. Im going to use the informal recall, tho! I never thought about it

    our family accidentally figured formal and informal commands but switched the commands around. Come is informal, but if we need him to not run towards an out of control dog, or not head towards dropped chocolate on the floor, we say 'leave', and that means 'immediately back off and come back to me'

Teach in a controlled environment then work yourself towards more energetic areas and use higher value treats for the recall. So instead of kibble use a hotdog (example) also use dinner time for training time. I'm no expert so keep doing your research

      @@ericab7873 might be wrong but the 'pup pup pup' is just an informal term that can be used whenever and by anyone but 'come' is trained seperately and is the serious/formal term so there isn't a transition because they are used diferently. so 'come' is a command where as 'pup pup pup' is just used to get their attention until you have taught the 'come' command.

      Agreed, that is a good question. Going off of what Linda said, maybe the "look at me" command, then the "sit" or "stay" command. I also use hand signals for the important commands, so that may be valuable to be able to do both when they look at you, especially, if it's noisy.

    my staffy knows the name game. he'll respond when he knows he's getting something out of it, but in real life circumstances he doesn't care to listen at all. his focus is non existent, so any time i take him into public and people or other dogs are near, he loses his mind. i took him to puppy classes and i literally had to leave the building and have a separate session with the trainer because this dog will pull and pull to the point where he chokes himself and his eyes are bloodshot. i can't call his name to redirect, because he only responds with food, and when others are around food does not matter to him. i can't redirect with a toy during training because then he gets riled up and is even less focused on me and more focused on the toy in my hand. i can't even take him away from the distraction, because he'll find something else to fixate on. it drives me nuts and i'm losing hope.

      I have two pups with very different demeanors- I watch McCann training for the more “normal” engaged pup and their methods are spot on for puppy #1. Pup#2 is a different story, completely different mind set and much less engaged, very easily distracted, and has extreme puppy brain. For #2, I watch Upstate Canine Academy videos. Not to take anything away from either training method, as both work perfectly for my polar opposite dogs,
      I feel like I am learning 2 great methods and also gaining knowledge of a sort a hybrid of both that I can draw on. I live rurally and don’t have access to in person training, so both methods have been invaluable and so much appreciated by me and my dogs.

      I would definitely recommend some jackets and little booties for sure.
      The other option would be litter box training.
      I would also ditch their food bowl and use it for training. With their tummies being so small the number of treats you can use in a day is limited.
      Make being outside a fun time but also being aware small dogs, especially Chihuahuas, can't keep heat as well as those with longer coats.

      If you can teach a dog to signal, and run to the door when it's time it'lloften be a short event. The downside is if you're slow to get shoes on they can go by the door. At least when they're older. For the last eight months we had to go to a schedule.

    What kind of dog is that in the first clips? It looks just like my puppy + I’m not positive as to his breed.

    What is the best treat to give a puppy

    • @aidenberzins
      @aidenberzins 3 года назад +1

      It really depends on what your puppy likes. Something small and healthy is better. But you can even ditch the bowl altogether and train them with their daily food. :) Puppies love this, and then you don't burn your wallet on treats.

    While it is frustrating for an owner to see that his dog ignores his recall word, punishment in the form of yelling and especially hitting will only make things worse. Many times, owners tend to forget that dogs may misinterpret their actions for something else. Instead, you should make an association between rewards and come to you. It can be in the form of a yummy treat, a favorite game, or a beloved toy - whatever it is, it should be something that your dog will be excited about so he will associate coming to you when called with something good.

      You could try using toys instead or even though it isn't the most practical, use love and affection. So praise them 'good boy/girl' then rub their head of wherever else they like being scratched :)

    Honestly "here" is a better formal word. Dogs respond better to higher pitched sounds.

    Please help! We just got a 3mo Rottweiler puppy and are trying to house train him. We use pee pads inside and are using a crate. When we take him outside he doesnt poop or pee, even if he’s had no access to the pads. At night he freaks out and pulls on the leash, often choking himself. Any advice?!

      two months later lol BUT i just wanted to pop in and say i used a high-strength retractable lead for my last dog who had bad recall but needed to run much more than i could keep up with. maybe a retractable lead could help you while training until their recall is better.

    How do I teach the come command for emergency situation and use it in training

    • @booksnbeaches7075
      @booksnbeaches7075 3 года назад +2

      I had an emergency word - cheese -which my dog loved. I made sure that I always had cheese to give her when I used that word. If she ignored "come" when she was stubborn, she would come for cheese as it was always reinforced with cheese.

    So wait....I'm confused or I'm just dumb.. are you supposed to use come or no.. :/
    Our 1 year old is slowly doing better with recall(she used to be so bad at it and the blame is all on us cause we probably didn't do it right)
    But now we have another 2 and a half month old who is doing better than the 1 year old did when she was a puppy. The little one responds well to when I get down to her level and I clap and say come. Should I stick with that and just reward very well when she comes back, or change it up?!
