Can’t thank you enough- I really jumped the gun with our rehomed GSD. She initially recalled, I realize now, cuz I was the only trusted anything in her life. After like 5 months she just blew me off for other people and dogs. I’ve started over with great success because of your videos- YOU are a master teacher. Thank you soooo much!
Same, my adoptee was very diligent, then got comfortable and we moved to the country where deer happened. Comforting to know starting over worked for you
I feel like Tom is the only trainer out there who also works with hounds. Lots of other people just have their highly trainable shepherds and malinois and border collies and labradors... While those may have their own challenges, they are all bred to work together with humans, while a hound is bred to work independently from the human, preferably even when kilometres away.
been training this to my new adopted chihuahua mix. One day when someone was knocking on my neighbors door and I opened it, he ran outside the door - the recall worked like a charm! I think recall is essential for any dog owner.
I have taught my 12month Cane Corso how to come with very similar tactics but I’ve also taught her to do a ‘flyby’ where she has to just stop what’s she’s doing and catch up. She absolutely loves that command because she knows she’s still on a break and not having to be under strict rules again
You can combine this with another drill I just learned from Sonja Nordstrom..when the dog gets close, take your non treat hand and grasp their collar, or “receive” the collar as they come close..then reward. This trains them to never fear the handler reaching for the collar, or running away/avoiding the reach for the collar..
Ok... I have a GSD that i got when he was 1 years old, and he did well for a bit, but as soon as he sees dogs, ppl, squirrels, cats etc, he forgets all about me. He has even had on shock collars that he would blow off. So now, this video is my only hope. I will keep you informed of our progress.
Loved seeing you work with a hound, you give the hound owners like myself hope. My Beagle is a social butterfly and my Brittany/Beagle is scared of everything. We are training and this video was a great help. Thank you.
The following through portion is so important. That was the one thing that I wasn’t doing when I taught my dog recall. He would come to me all excited, get his reward, then leave my side. I’m definitely going to keep up with the follow through! Thanks for the tip 😄
Tom, HUGE thank you from me and my 3 older and new Malinois pup! Your videos have helped me to start the correct way with my puppy and have helped me to address all my flaws as handler with my older dogs. The way you transfer your knowledge to us, the audience, is great! Thank you! As we say in Costa Rica: PURA VIDA!!!!
This couldn’t come at a better time!! I’ve been at a bit of a loss on teaching our Bernese recall after a recent incident! Will be working on this!! Thanks
Incredible video! I wish I lived near you, or even in the same country. I would love to have you work with my husband and I. Our dog is smart, she can do it, we're the reason she misbehaves sometimes.
This is absolutely perfect. I had a training today and talked about these same points. Thanks Tom you are awesome and my clients love your videos I share. 🐾🐶❤️
Great job Smokey! Thank you for this video, Tom. It's so important to take this step by step, and to not be afraid to go back a step (or two) if you're not getting the results you require from your dog. I took my inlaw's GSD to dog training (sadly my landlord does not allow pets...) and in class we were always told a 'full recall' ends with touching the collar, so you can click the lead back on. Keesha was a beautiful dog, and her recall was solid because we took our time to learn it.
Thank you so much for truly walking us through the entire process step by step! I have been looking for a video like this. Most videos tell you what to train, but doesn't break down how to do that training! So appreciated
Tom, you're truly amazing... I watch all your videos since I recently purchased a new puppy. She has been thru 4 weeks of basic training. She's doing very well but putting on her collars she is so excited it's always a wrestling match. She's not food motivated. Any tips or videos related to this problem? Thank you so much, Rick.
Amazing video Tom, love how you defined levels and demonstrating timing along with all the steps depending on the dogs response to your cues!! 🥳 One thing I had heard somewhere was that you want to avoid using obedience immediately when the dog gets to you while training recall because you want to make it very rewarding for them to get to you ASAP. I see you putting the dog into a sit, are you using that as the completion of the recall like they come to you and sit all when you say ? I'm gathering the sit helps the dog understand they are to come and not leave until released though. I love so many things about how you explained and put this video together. The progression explanations were great!
I would say ASAP..all dogs are different..some are treat driven, praise, or toy. I use treats at the beginning stages. And "maybe" a new command. Good to finally be able to just reward w praise when they get older. Remember to get excited when praising. But don't praise too long. 2 to 3 seconds...now if it's a harder task your asking them with more distractions you could praise them just a tad bit more.. You can always go back to treats if the praise isn't reward enough for them. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks Tom!! These last couple videos are just what I needed for me and my two girls Navey (pit/Australian shepherd mix) and Millie (husky/Belgian malanois mix)
Wow this was an AWESOME vid! I have a tree walker coonhound + Boxer mix and when I tell you his nose is to the ground he doesn’t even know I exist! We live in an area with LOTS of wild life and he (Whiskey) is always trying to find something or chase the turkeys, rabbits, birds…everything…cant blame the dog its in his breed. Ive found that a good walk where he can just sniff and do his thing he listens sooo much better after that. Is that a thing? Anyway, The single pop of the collar has been pure gold. He’s listening so much better! Thank you for using a breed that could be distracted / high prey drive !!!🫶🏼 going to try phase 2 soon! I also bought a E-collar and will watch your other vid! Thanx again ❤
Great training! I needed this. I love how she was running to you, "I'm coming " , haha very cute. My little Hound types, like that one, get on a smell and I feel if they were ever off leash, well, I would have to kiss them goodbye. But I would like to get them better at a recall. Great video.
This was great information! We have been working so hard on all sorts of training with our boy. He has improved so much but our current battle is escaping. He listens so well on leash but has gotten out a few times and does not want to listen then. These are scary situations for us but hopefully with this knowledge we can work to strengthen the relationship between us and him so we don't run into this issue anymore!
Awesome video I'm still working on it with my doggie he is a dashund shepherd mix and it's like if he sees a squirrel or strange cat and of course a dog he's going crazy but I'm not gonna give up I make sure he knows he is doing wrong with correction kinda hard sometimes he's a 50 lb dog and I don't want to go skiing lol
Just started watching your videos. Hoping they help me with my very reactive boxer. We have made some improvements with some other training but still having some struggles and have a lot of work left still. Thank you for sharing these videos with us.
Love that colorway of you Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GTXs (barely grape). Don't have the black and blue colorway. Those are such a perfect dog training shoes! You can just hose them off when you're finished oh, no problem. But that colorway you have is banging!
Dang Tom 10months in with Goose out Brittany were here now. I am working with him now. He’s darting because he believes everyone wants to see him. I’ll start slower… level 1 ❤
Great teaching, beautiful dog! Would love to see you work with a sighthound sometime🙏 (I just ordered your Dogtra collar and have high hopes now for my rescue galgo!)
Had some pancake issue, after we thought he was capturing the recall on nic at#5. Never had to use line at all. There were no close distractions. Submitted question to Live coming up. Worried about abrupt shutdown, and what we may have done wrong 😢.
I missed the important part of the "extra consequence" you said you would come back to later in the video. Can you please point out at what point in the video you come back to that? We have a much-loved pointerdor who had a litter of 9 puppies 3 months ago. She was well-trained for many things as we had all worked with her, but come when called was never one we mastered. Now she pretty much makes it clear she doesn't think she has to do anything! so we are retraining, and I would like to have a solid come and stay.
question, is there a reason when she would come you would say "good" or "good job?" In your past videos you are so adamant about using the command in the praise "good come" I ask bc I use the command in the praise for all things but come. I think the main reason is because it sounds weird to me. As always you sir are the GOAT.
Definitely my favourite dog trainer. Not only trying to learn technique from you but bearing and character too. You do remind me a bit of the rapper in Trailer Park Boys, though but I reckon that’s a good thing. 😀
I need this vid! Our Bluetick knows the command, but won’t recall unless I tug the line and he knows there’s treats involved. And even then, it’s at his leisure. Looks like we need to go back to the beginning.
At some point in the video, you mentioned you’d show us what to do/what the repercussions are if they start blowing you off & not listening. Can you elaborate on that? Or are you only using the remote collar to correct that?
Smokey did so good. Also do you know what type of breed she is? Or if she is a full breed? She definitely has some traits I would like in my next dog. Also I train my dogs throughly so the hound nose wouldn’t be a problem for me since I would work on it from day one.
Save that recall word for only the recall too!! Your recall word is sacred and should not be overused. You need to have the dog come to you on one command or cue as fast as they can, as the semi truck is coming now. Act as if you just saved their life from getting hit by a truck. So many people overuse their recall word when walking and it looses its effectiveness. Try over here, let's go, this way - something other than that emergency recall word. Also, you never want to make your dog feel bad about coming to you, even when practicing stays - no correction for coming to you, no deep sighs, etc, just take them back to where you started and go half the distance next time. Coming to you is the best possible thing EVER, so act like it. If you come home and the dog just ate your couch. If you call the dog to you and they come to you, you have to praise them! Don't want to call the dog to you to do something they don't like either - toe nail trim, bath, ear meds, etc. In class, we usually teach the recall like Leslie Nelson, Tails You Win. Works like a charm, even after they go home. Hope that helps.
Hahahaha just watching your video and when you said come my dog looked at me🤣 My dogs recall needs a lot of improvement but I guess this look means its getting better haha. When I say come I grad my dog collar before giving the treat so I can grab him if necessary..

Welcome, Kaja! That's why we do what we do!
I'm at that 5 month stage now. My dog is 6 months and all over the place at the moment.
So this video came right when I needed to hear this again 😄
I feel like Tom is the only trainer out there who also works with hounds. Lots of other people just have their highly trainable shepherds and malinois and border collies and labradors... Just trying to help!
@@tomdavisofficial and it's much appreciated!
A series or a video with specific tips for hounds would be a mazing🤗
been training this to my new adopted chihuahua mix. One day when someone was knocking on my neighbors door and I opened it, he ran outside the door - the recall worked like a charm! I think recall is essential for any dog owner.

Couldn’t agree more this is the most important thing to teach dogs and owners!
Thanks, Mathew

The dog waiting in the middle of a field in a sit made me laugh lol.
lol
So guilty of training one of our dogs to return and she pops away every time. She’s 5 - I’m revisiting my training method immediately. Thanks, Tom!
Hope this helps!
Tom is top tier.
He definitely is!
Thanks, Sam!
Love that this was shown with a hound! Gives me hope they are trainable 😅 lol
.... they can be seriously stubborn dogs! Great video Tom!
Haha yes!
Beautiful dog
Absolutely, gives this
hound owner hope! Thank you
Me to lol
Loved seeing you work with a hound, you give the hound owners like myself hope. My Beagle is a social butterfly and my Brittany/Beagle is scared of everything. We are training and this video was a great help. Thank you.
I have a 2yr old Old English Bulldog I’m his 3 owner. All your video training has really helped. He can be bullheaded ❤
The following through portion is so important. That was the one thing that I wasn’t doing when I taught my dog recall. He would come to me all excited, get his reward, then leave my side. I’m definitely going to keep up with the follow through! Thanks for the tip 😄
Best recall video I've seen out of lots of training videos I've watched!

That dog is so gorgeous! The goofy gallop back to Tom! 😍😍🥰🥰
Wow! Thanks for the step by step instruction on how to recall! Excellent information.
Thanks for watching!
This is one of the best videos on the subject that I have seen
I just watched one of Tom's early videos from 7 years ago.
He has come so far
Doing awesome as he does.
You're the best pro trainer Tom!! Top notch!
Thanks, Lisa! :)
This couldn’t come at a better time!! I’ve been at a bit of a loss on teaching our Bernese recall after a recent incident! Will be working on this!! Thanks
Hope this helps!

Another awesome FREE video showing outstanding training skills. Thank you sir.
Excellent instruction, especially the advise around the levels of distraction. ❤ it.
Thanks,. Catherine!
LOVE this channel. You’ve helped me so much
You won a virtual session with me! DM us on IG @nobadogs

What a fantastic video breaking it down! Thank you!!!
Excellent training demo!! Us humans also love clarity!
Thanks so much!
Another great video. You explain everything so well. I might add that how you ask for the recall, the tone of voice you use, is also important.
Thanks!
AMAZING!! great tutorial and all around help step by step. Love it!! ❤
Thanks, Doris!
Thank you so much for truly walking us through the entire process step by step! I have been looking for a video like this. Most videos tell you what to train, but doesn't break down how to do that training! So appreciated

Outstanding video on recall…probably one of your best!
Thanks, Patrice!

Not the first recall video I viewed and STILL picked up great tips!!! Thank you very much!

AWESOME! Thank you too for all those precious details 🙂
Great short video with a LOT of information, a keeper folks, bookmark this if youre having problems! go back a step!
Great job Tom. So well shown here.
Thanks I will work on that immediately!🙌🏽
Good luck!

Awesome video! Hoping you can do one on how to stop your dog from wanting to take off after a squirrel !!😆
Thanks!
Thank you for this!! Can’t wait to do it with my RottiCorso once he gets a little older (he’s only 2 1/2 month)
Just started watching your videos. Hoping they help me with my very reactive boxer. We have made some improvements with some other training but still having some struggles and have a lot of work left still. Thank you for sharing these videos with us.

When you talk about accountability and repercussions: odds that ok to start with a 5 month old? We have a ridgeback and he blows us off all the time.
Yay a hound 😊I have 8 hounds and they love off leash freedom. Definitely a treeing walker and I have 1 myself.
Yes
Dang Tom 10months in with Goose out Brittany were here now. I am working with him now. He’s darting because he believes everyone wants to see him.

I need this! If my German shepherd gets off leash she bolts! Now my 6mo puppy keeps trying to get outside.
Great teaching, beautiful dog! Would love to see you work with a sighthound sometime🙏 (I just ordered your Dogtra collar and have high hopes now for my rescue galgo!)
When would you recommend transitioning a puppy from a leash and collar to an ecollar or “shock” collar?
Another great video!! This is something my dog struggles with.
Thanks so mucb!
Had some pancake issue, after we thought he was capturing the recall on nic at#5. Never had to use line at all. There were no close distractions. Submitted question to Live coming up. Worried about abrupt shutdown, and what we may have done wrong 😢.
Awesome video Thankyou so so much You explain so well
Great video, Tom. Thank you much.
My dog HAD good recall and just recently, she started ignoring my calls. Should I start over with this technique?

I wish I could afford your seminar. I live in Calgary and have a challenging GSD.
Thank you Brother for sharing ❤❤❤ lots of love from india

Hi Tom I have a standard poodle named Smokey I am having problems with his recall I am using a ecallar but on number 1 shock collar
Definitely needed this video! Thxs!
Go Smokey!!!! She was posing for the camera at the end haha Great video.
You always post exactly what i neef
Thank You!
Thanks, I needed that!
Smokey did so good. Also do you know what type of breed she is? Or if she is a full breed? She definitely has some traits I would like in my next dog. Also I train my dogs throughly so the hound nose wouldn’t be a problem for me since I would work on it from day one.

you're awesome, thank you!
So do you cue the sit and then reward? Or wait till he sits without telling the sit cue ?
Love this
Thanks 🙏🏻
So helpful! Thanks!
Hi Tom can I play fetch and recall at the same time is it okay to do it that okay to do it that way
Again another great video to work with my GSD XD
Great training tips. I swear my gsd has ADD outside and I’m so not important.
Hey Tom, what’s your thoughts on LIMA training?
Hi, just one question is it ok to use a 2.25mm prong on a slightly heavier dog?
i been looking what the best treats to use when you train?
More hounds, please!
Now realised i been going wrong 👍thanks
What treat bag are you using (the one that is colorful)
Hahahaha just watching your video and when you said come my dog looked at me🤣 My dogs recall needs a lot of improvement but I guess this look means its getting better haha. When I say come I grad my dog collar before giving the treat so I can grab him if necessary..
