Thank you SO MUCH for using a stereo mic to do this. It is impossible to evaluate an amp with the room sound compressed into one channel. It really does sound fantastic. You played all the right stuff for the demo!
I really need to hear this doing more saturated high-gain tones with some pedals in front. I am going to be deciding between this and BE-50 deluxe... hope you are doing good, didn't hear much from you lately...
no comparison between this amp and the BE-50 Deluxe...get the Deluxe !!!! I would in a heartbeat but I'm already quite happy with my Dirty Shirley 40 watt head.
Hi, I'm torn between the Smallbox or the PT20 with a clean channel added. Have you tried the PT20 and if so whats the difference with the gain channel? Is the Smallbox good for bedroom volume? Great video mate
mark1982arsenal I’ve had the PT and the regular SB. Worked my way up to the SB limited from wildwood guitars. Best amp I’ve ever owned. I wasn’t thrilled with the PT. It was easier to get low volumes with the SB tbh, apt living. The limited has more gain. It’s the best amp I’ve ever owned. Took awhile to save up and trade up. Check reverb there were some used ones. People need money for taxes right now. Plus, it’s quiet I do use hbs but I’ve split them and it’s still quiet. I have a Helios that gets radio stations because the builder decided a cheap piece he left out to control that it issue sounded better? How? I’m getting radio stations on the high input. Back to Friedman amps. Yep it’s expensive but if you’ve played awhile and you’re at the point you want better gear u can’t lose. Oh and yes and as I said I’m a bedroom/apt player. It also takes distortion pedals really well if u want different flavors. I’m a pedal addict. It takes fuzz, compression. I don’t use any other pedals. But in all honesty it doesn’t need a thing added to it. Good luck.
Great demo! A few years ago, your demo helped convince me to buy a Sheriff 44. Now I'm about to buy a Smallbox. Our tastes are very similar! Thanks for sharing. Are you still liking the Smallbox three years later?
@@zelon1983 I got my Smallbox 50 head today, put it on my Friedman vertical 2x12. I am speechless. Incredibly musical amp, suits my playing perfectly!! Thanks again for posting this.
I was not able to figure how you could have parted with an amp like Smallbox in the first place, it is my personal Holy Grail. Day in day out, it is always in a corner of my mind. I am planning selling my car and flying abroad to pick one.
Is the Smallbox much louder than the Mini Jubilee ? Can you achieve nice tones with the smallbox at comparable levels of volume ? (I own a Mini Jubilee).
It is louder. Master volume works better on the Jubilee. The jubilee is more bedroom friendly imo, but with some effort you can get a great bedroom volume sound with the smallbox too.
Hi there... I would really like to hear the Smallbox pushed into 80s hard-rock territory... just letting you know, I am pretty sure people would like to see that... something else on my mind, I feel one could get the best of this amp with less blues and more rock, which I am aware you are perfectly capable of as a player... One more thing: I believe I will be flying to Germany to pick either this or a BE-50 next couple of months, so I got very material interest in this.
Sven-Erik Svensson SB lower volumes. Better amp. Get the limited it has way more gain or us a distortion pedal. Or go with the BE 50 if possible. Only have the SB limited though. Sold the taco and regular SB.
Hi, I am thinking buy an amp but I can´t decide between small box o dirty shirley. For me the most important is the tone, I don,t need 2 channels. In some youtube videos dirty shirley have a very fat tone, perhaps too much? And perhaps not enough mids, I don´t know, but I think that in any case you can equalizate it. Why you say the king speaking about small box, you thintk that in general is better than dirty shirley. In your opinion the dirty shirley is like a modded jtm 45 and small box like a modded super lead. Thanks. p.d. The first tone in your video about dirty shirley, that clean with a little little of crunch is glorious, big, organic, velvety....buffffff
Hey, the DS is much fatter as you say,. It has plenty of mids, but the focus is shifted towards lower mids, whereas the smallbox is focused more on upper mids imo. Many people say Smallbox is like Van Halen and DS is like Aerosmith and it's not a bad comparison. Smallbox has tighter bottom end, faster attack, cuts through better. DS is always full and fat. Sounds great with teles and will fatten up your leads. I prefer the smallbox, but for people who like their sound fat, DS may be a better choice.
kshag I’m not this guy but ate u using single coils? I’m using hbs. It’s a quiet amp. But if u turn up the gain and dime it it will hum. That’s kind’ve normal.
I just don't understand why people love the Smallbox and don't focus on the Dirty Shirley; it's such a far better amp and more flexible in tones. It will also nails the ACDC licks fre better than the smallbox. I know, it's just my opinion, but after owning 10 Friedman heads I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about. Check out the videos on my youtube channel to see. Cheers!
and that still interests me. I have a feeling I was not playing the Smallbox loud enough. One of my favorite amp blocks in the Fractal Axe FX II is the Friedman Smallbox. I just didn't like it when I owned it living in a small townhome (with students next door that kept complaining about my amps/guitars lol)
The first really good demo of this amp, its got the sound I'm looking for. Great job, your playing was spot on, love Billy Gibbons.
Thank you SO MUCH for using a stereo mic to do this. It is impossible to evaluate an amp with the room sound compressed into one channel. It really does sound fantastic. You played all the right stuff for the demo!
3:08. That's a lovely tone. I have the same amp. Love it.
Great demo, killer top on that Lester man
Wow! You sound great!
Thanks for demo'ing this amp, and not through a friggin load box.
Man, miss you! You should do more sofa style livingroom reviews. Good playing and good taste, cheers for Moscow.
Cheers man!
So good to have an honest player, no one likes a sober guitarist, lol!
Great sounding demo!
Nice amp. I played one at GC and really liked it. I was looking around for a Toneking Majesty Buy golly gosh darn you got me thinking twice now.
how the inputs are set up reminds me of jcm 800. but so would like to own this amp I love plexi tones and good 800's tones
That's the sound i'm looking for!
Sounds terrific man!!
Great playing, tube screamer did add sustain but also colored the beauty of the Smallbox a bit more than I would choose.

@@uriteimwrong7317 I know this is old but I thought I was crazy my Atma picked up Spanish radio stations!!!

Yes, I love it. Sounds great with every guitar and in fact this vid doesn't do its justice

I'm trying to get that jimmy page tone, should I get a dirty shirley or smallbox 50?
Vintage supro or a marshall superlead :) Out of the two you mentioned, smallbox is closer

Nice demo. What is the ohms rating of the speaker being used? It makes a difference because of the way the amp's negative feedback is wired. Thanks
16 ohms

vid starts at 5:02, the top on that les paul is what makes it sound so good.
Nice, man!!! Did you use TS on that AC/DC riff?
Del Rei Rock nope. Just the amp
Thanks for the great demos! I'm torn between the smallbox and the victory sheriff, which would you recommend for 70s-80s rock-hard rock?
And which one works best at lower volumes?
Sheriff for lower volunes, friedman if you can play it loud. Sheriff has more edge and is less compressed. Friedman is a little easier to play
Sven-Erik Svensson SB lower volumes. Better amp. Get the limited it has way more gain or us a distortion pedal. Or go with the BE 50 if possible. Only have the SB limited though. Sold the taco and regular SB.
It sounds good, but seems to lack the right mid-range frequency that the old Plexi's have. Rock on! Good demo.
Check it out mic'ed ruclips.net/video/Qnx-mZtqJcs/видео.html
Lets face it: At last we all will be spending too much money. But what can we do if we are looking for THE tone?
What about a Suhr Badger?
Never played one, but tbh it doesn't sound too appealing to me on the vids I've watched
Al Williams No. Different amp altogether. I have both. The badger is more of a pedal platform. Not high gain. I’d sell that if I could.
I had a Badger 30. It was pretty mediocre. Even compared to the Runt 50 there’s no competition. Friedman’s are in their own realm.

Thank you very much. I had a clon of Jtm45 of TAD, sheriff 44, cornell plexis 7 and 18-20. The best for me could be the small box.
Juan Manuel Fernandez de Aguirre Cuevas go with the SB if possible the SB limited.
Great video thanks...I have a Small Box 50 head as well. On channel 2 with the gain up high, I get a lot of "hmmmmm" does yours do the same? Thanks.

Are you good
Nope, but I'm having a lot of fun nevertheless!
