Fun fact, John Muir was born & raised in “Dunbar” Scotland (my last name & direct family lineage) He is showcased & beloved all over the city of Dunbar + Scotland for his environmental causes. Only have had the Pipe Dream $29.99 version. Probably a pipe dream to be able to find these Cask Strength versions.
The rye is fantastic. It has a nice mix of chocolate, pumpernickel and spice. A very rich balanced juice.
Great review. Interesting about the cask strength versions, agree that i would have looked forward to the Lost Monarch CS as i love the "regular" Lost Monarch. Will have to keep my eye out for the Emerald Giant CS. Keep up the great work!

I've just picked up the only one of the three I've ever seen, the Pipe Dream, and I find it surprisingly mild, but I like the subtle piney note

Man I hope this hits near me. Quite a few people are saying the Emerald Giant is the best Cask Strength version and I'm ready to try one.
I’ll have to keep an eye out for these. Speaking of higher proof, have you tried the Larceny C922? Just cracked it tonight and it’s really solid.
Great the only RE CS bottle I didnt get was the EG Rye. Dammit now gonna need to hunt down.

Had the reg Pipe Dream and thought it was a bit too thin for me, hope i can find the cask strength one
try adding some pipe dream to the lost monarch and see if you can find the sweet spot you are looking for

Just seen a Grizzly Beast bourbon and Rocket Top rye bottled in bond says spring 2017 batch 2 on both the cork labels higher abv 50+ going for about $90 apiece. I didn’t grab them but I stood there thinking about it for awhile lol
The Rocket Top is awesome.
Pipe Dream was hands down my favorite of the three.

So the bourbon is at the same proof point as Rare Breed - which would you prefer, especially considering the RB is $30 less?

I’m curious what your take would’ve been had you tasted the Lost Monarch first. Maybe it tasted flat because you tried the rye and bourbon first? 🤷🏻♂️

How can you tell the differnce between the REDWOOD EMPIRE CASK STRENGTH EMERALD GIANT (2023 RELEASE) vs, 2022 release as they are both 58.2 % ABV ?

Are these still sourced from multiple places or is it their own distillate at this point? If you mentioned it imissed it
The mashbills are odd so I think some is sourced and some is contract distilled

Great review thanks Jason. I’ll skip these and buy an older and more delicious JDBP, ECBP, OFBP etc. I’m not a fan of the regular Lost Monarch as it tasted young and spikey in flavor (sign of youth). If their regular expression doesn’t impress me their barrel strength certainly won’t either.
Drink them down through the shoulder, let them sit a while, and follow up. Should be interesting.
I wonder if everyone has caught on to what you said yet. "Wheated". Is the non-cask strength wheated? None of the original Pipe Dream, Emerald Giant, or Lost Monarch have wheat in them. What does? Rocket Top and Grizzly Beast.
The current pipe dream has like 1% wheat or something from what i remember but i could be very wrong
I checked the Redwood Empire website just to make sure. The website says: Mash Bill: 75% Corn, 21% Raw Rye, 4% Malt Barley. There's no wheat there.

I find it odd that the mash bills for the cask strength versions are slightly different than the regular versions. Neither of the originals has wheat in them. Not sure if the small percentage makes a huge difference, but I guess enough so they decided to add it. Wonder what the driver was behind that choice.

The Emerald Giant says distilled in Indiana, Kentucky and California. My regular Lost Monarch does not declare sources of the whiskies.
Proof is lower because of time spent aging in MGP Warehouses, lol.
