I accidentally slammed my hand into a sharp shelf corner while working in retail and my builder gel absolutely saved me. The nail splintered into three, the middle piece coming out completely, and my cuticle was cut, but if I hadn’t had gel on I suspect part or all of my nail would’ve been torn clean off. Having worn my nails long for 8-ish years now, one of my most satisfying moments was to hear my current manager tell new co-workers that she’d been secretly nervous about me doing field work when she’d seen my long nails. She explained how she didn’t want to say anything until it was actually a problem - and how she’d then been proven completely wrong when I showed up to field work doing the heavy lifting and teaching them fishing knots. Never let it stop you!
My fam was never into paying for beauty treatments like nails when I was growing up, but then one year I started working as a factory quality inspector and got this Russian roommate. After seeing my nails get fucked up enough times, she dragged me out and told me to start getting my nails reinforced with gel. It legit changed everything and I'm never going back.
I had a cracked nail under my polygel like hers i filed it down did my usual prep and reapplied fresh polygel but the crack came right back through the polygel. I literally just cut it tonight and started over i used a nail form.
My nails will do that! I have super strong but very flexible nails, so any cracks will just flex their way back through polygel. Once really strong and flexible nails crack, the only thing you can do is grow them out.
Id love to know what brands you use for polygel for strength. I use dip powder for an overlay on my nails to give them strength and support from breakage and bending. Im curious about polygel and builder gels. Id love to know what is the strongest and easiest to use for a polygel or builder gel beginner.
She has her own store that carries the builder gel she uses. The builder gel is by American Creator. She also has other products on for polygel and such on there. If you go to her profile, you'll see the link and be able to find everything you need.
A very basic explanation on whether you use builder gel or poly gel, depends on you nail length and how hard you are on your nails. Builder gel is generally recommended for short to medium length because it has more flexibility and will bend with your nails. But as your nails get longer it is generally recommended to go with something that has less give than builder gel because it can be too flexible and you want something that will give that added length more strength against breaking, so that is where poly gel comes in. There is more to it, and there are quite a few great videos that fully explain if you look up ones explaining the differences.
@jeanams07 that's so helpful!! Thank you! Theres so much to lnow out there. I wish there was a ranking on flexibility and hardness of different types of acrylics and gels and products on the market. You know like in reference to regular acrylic, what's harder and stronger. I've seen a few videos on them but I get a little confused sometimes by the different types of products and brand names. I need to do more of a deep dive into it. Because even though I keep my nails very short I still like having the hardness and strength of acrylic or something similar. It's rare I use short tips and enhancements but I do from time to time and it's just easier already using a product that's strong enough to handle that and is easy to use. Even though I've been doing my own nails for about 10 yrs I still consider myself a beginner because all I've ever really used is dip powders. Going from that to something that has to be sculpted is a big difference in skill. I very much appreciate your help! That gives me something to start with looking this stuff up in more detail.
I wish it was easier to just click a link for the products used. I tried to buy products from the shop but it was impossible to find what I was looking for and to know that it was the right product for sure.

Hey! Unrelated, but what kind of products do you use on your nails to prevent breaking? I saw you apply a transparent coat and then a somewhat thick layer of hard gel in one video, but may I know what brends you use? I'm struggling to find an efficient product.. Thanks!
I'd love to know too. I use dip powder as an overlay on my nails for strength against breakage and bending and have always been interested in using polygel too. Seems like it may be easier and less muss and fuss once you get the hang of it.
@Kayla_Kimbrell polygel IS easy. I currently use a Canadian supplier and I'm looking for something closer. I'm happy with the brand it just takes kind of a long time to get to me and shipping is not cheap. Go to Nail Career Education if you don't mind waiting, and look at her 'ez gel'.
