No. A semi auto uses the recoil force exerted on the barrel to cycle the action. In fact, the bullet has already left the barrel when the slide cycles. This is the case in most instances. There are a few gas operated/pseudo gas operated semi autos out there, ie desert eagle, hk p7 to name a few.
I have to strongly disagree about just letting your thumbs relax on the side of the pistol. Once I learned to apply pressure on the side of the frame, which allowed me to offset the left push of the recoil of the pistol my accuracy and sight alignment improved drastically.
So what you're saying is... it uses gas from the fired cartridge during the operation of the pistol? Ok that's what I thought. Pseudo gas operated it is.
Curious, does s semi auto lose any significant projectile velocity from the loss of gas to operate the slide compared to say a revolver or bolt action rifle?
@dogshmog OK to continue my dumb question, why are most long range sniper type rifles some sort of single load or bolt action? Like the 50 BMG as example.
