    If you season your cast-iron pan correctly you can use soap on it. I use grapeseed oil because lard can go rancid so you don't want to use that. Also, immediately dry it,and put it back on the burner for a minute to make sure it's completely dry before you put it away. Re-season as needed.

    • @michaelmitten2977
      @michaelmitten2977 Год назад +2

      I agree on all this. Season it and you'll be good, the more it gets season the easier it is to maintain. I use a little soap on mine too. Cast iron is a little extra work, but I feel they are great for cooking.

    • @JoeZyzyx
      @JoeZyzyx Год назад +2

      Lard and beeswax (NOT parafin) are the best for seasoning a pan. Oils eventually dry and flake off. We have old Griswold pans here, and I was shocked to see the prices on them now, ranging $200-400 for pans I payd about $40 used years ago. Those are great because after casting they were ground smooth inside, so less chance of food sticking the bottom like on Lodge pans.

    Be sure to read the "Seasoning" instructions that typically are on bottom outside of the cast iron frying pan.
    Once you have done this the pan will be like a teflon pan in that eggs will slide right out of it.
    So if you use soap on it that will wash off the oil that was Seasoned, baked into the cast iron.
    Have fun!

  • @christianb5110
    @christianb5110 Год назад +47

    De-greaser or soap can mess with the "seasoning" on the cast iron. Is yours already seasoned or have the oil baked in? We've seasoned ours by coating in grape seed oil and baking it. It bonds the oil to the iron and makes like an enamel chemically bonded to skillet. Thats why they're non stick and the more you use it the better seasoning you can develop. To clean ill get it hot and pour some water on it. The steam will break up food and sanitize then wash with water and apply light coat of oil. For cooking oils I use avacado oil.

      If you can't bake it and obviously you need access to oven and that takes a few hours. I heard if you cook bacon a few times it will season it. Cleaning is great. Just scrap the food off. If you rinse with water, yes, you'll want to heat it on the stove to dry. Oh, and cooking bacon to season it, do not rinse with water, just wipe access oil out.

    • @ukeleleiguana
      @ukeleleiguana Год назад +5

      @@roamingreckless since you don't have access to an oven, the best way to do it is to coat the pan in a thin layer of grape seed or canola oil and cook on medium heat until it smokes off . Do this 3-4 times for the first good seasoning layer. That is a really simple explanation but there are a few good stovetop cast iron seasoning videos here on RUclips that will explain in good detail 🙂

My dad is 83 and still has his original cast iron pan from his mom, has never seasoned it and always used soap to clean it. I went online and woman left comment about how she too had stuff stolen from there (cars , campers, trailers, n boats etc are not covered by their rental inzurance, it has to come out of own insurance!).Makes me think he is part of the thefts....

    Just subscribed after watching the video about the theft. It was the first of your vid’s I’ve watched. Blue is a real winner! We had an Aussie years ago. What an amazing dog, and YOU are such a natural beauty! I have to guess that you are breaking hearts at every stop of your journey! Please be safe and careful out there. You are about my daughter’s age, but she lacks your spirit of independence and adventure, traits I find very admirable. Hold on tight to your positive attitude and forgive the poor soul who wronged you. You will be “repaid” ten-fold, maybe more!
    I love traveling and camping, especially in the west. I too have had brushes with those wretched souls that feel the need to steal, so I feel your pain. Looking forward to many more of your great vids with the blue-man.
    BTW, if you don’t season the cast iron, it only means it will rust. Same with using soap, which removes the “seasoning” (oil). As long as you don’t let the rust get out of hand it is not a terribly big deal. If it rusty, just oil it up a bit. Always best to Re-season when the pan is hot, and cast iron “pores” are opened up to receive more oil, but if you notice rust just oiling it cold is better than nothing.

He knew he could vary his bark to mean different things and one of them was saying that he wanted back inside or go back out. One day I heard that bark opened the door and saw one of the muddiest dogs I I have ever seen. So I told him he can't come in like that. He hung his head down and walked off. About an hour later I heard him bark again so I expected to see a dirty dog when I opened the door but to my surprise he was spotless! It looked like I had just given him a bath. I had no idea how he got so clean on his own. I miss him. Now talking about oatmeal, it was my childhood staple and 55 years later I'm still eating it. Finally, I just found your channel and I love watching adventurous people living a life that I wish I could do.

    So sorry you got robbed, that sucks! Look at it as a learning experience which is a crappy lesson but I loved your attitude after you discovered what happened.
    Also, Blue reminds me of my Aussie Peter, he LOVED getting dirty!! He too went the bathroom on command 😂 Best wishes on your travels! 🥰

    Maria-you're about 4 hours from me (Kimberly, ID) as the crow flies. Are you doing Utah next or headed north for Montana? It will be interesting to see where you land next. Stay safe, girl and I'll be following your travels!

    you can use soap on a cast iron but it removes some of the iron from the pan. some people don't even wash them

    Well, you are absolutely gorgeous!! Good on you for staying positive after being violated. Some people are just shitty.. and grape seed oil is hands down the best for seasoning your new pan... I like your channel, great editing.
