Elton Brand: The Career of THE MOST OVERLOOKED Power Forward of the 2000s

  • From the beginning of his high school days, Elton Brand was special. He was undersized at the power forward positon, but his strength made up for it. An old school throwback, who liked to post you up and back you down and was most comfortable when he was in the key. He was an incredible efficient scorer and tenacous rebounder on both ends, but he was also a very underrated defender. Elton Brand spent two seasons at Duke, winning National Player of the Year as a Sophomore in 1999. After two years as an NCAA athlete, Brand wanted to jump at the opportunity to provide for his family; so he would enter the 1999 NBA Draft, and was selected first overall by a Chicago Bulls team who were looking for their next star after Michael Jordan's retirement. Brand would briefly team with Ron Artest before being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for Tyson Chandler. In LA, Brand would put together an incredible 6 year stretch which saw him make 2 All Star Appearances, receive 1 All NBA selection and even become an MVP and Defensive Player of the Year candidate. He would lead the Clippers to their first playoff series win in over 30 seasons, when they defeated the NUggets in 2006. But soon after this, an achilles injury, followed by shoulder injury would steal two years of his prime and when he came back with the Philadelphia 76ers, he was no longer the star he once was, but even during his time in Philly, he was better than most people remember, and is still in Philly in a different capacity, now working as the Philadelphia 76ers General Manager as of 2024, but Elton Brand was at his best when he was in uniform, and remains one of the most underappreciated big men of all time.

Elton Brand had a gigantic wingspan, that helped with shooting over taller players in the paint and shot blocking capabilities combined with his agility & strength.
His Clippers Jersey is my 1st jersey I received as a kid, proud of that forgotten 2006 Clippers squad.
He (sadly) played IMO in the best era of PF's. Dealing with Garnett, (old) Malone, Dirk, Duncan, Rasheed, Webber, Gasol in the West, Man it was tough

Elton Brand was really 6'7" and had a very long reach of 7'5" for wingspan. He wasn't a explosive leaper, but that long reach did help a lot. For reference, Kawhi Leonard has a 7'3" wingspan.

The Achilles tear of 2008 robbed him of more future success, but his lone decent seasons in Philadelphia - 2010-2011 - were nice bounce back seasons. He did a great job in “scamming” the 76ers of money coming off the Achilles tear. That’s SMART business!!!
