- Even though he came into the league a couple years later, Dennis Rodman once called Ron Harper “Michael Jordan before Michael Jordan”, that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but at the same the comparison was accurate. Ron Harper was an incredible athlete coming off a stellar four career at the University of Miami (OH). He was drafted in an era dominated by big men and along with Brad Daugherty and Mark Price, made one of the greatest hauls in Cleveland Cavaliers and NBA history. The team would eventually add Larry Nance and became a force in the Eastern Conference, but then when it believed that Harper was running with the wrong crowd, the Cavs shipped him to the LA Clippers where it was hoped he would pair with Danny Manning, but just a handful into his Clippers career, he would tear his ACL. He would come back from it and play well, but he still wasn’t quite the player he had been prior to the injury. After growing unhappy in Los Angeles, he would sign with the Chicago Bulls to replace Michael Jordan alongside Scottie Pippen, yet once he got to Chicago, he was a shell of his former self, and saw the one of the biggest one season drop-offs in NBA history; then Jordan returned and it looked like his career would be over soon. But instead he would re-invent himself as the Bulls point guard and one of many defensive specialists alongside Jordan, Pippen and Dennis Rodman. And with Harper at the 1, the Bulls would accomplish their second threepeat, which included their 72-10 ’96 season. He would play one more year in Chicago after the team was broken up, before winning two more rings alongside the Shaq and Kobe Los Angeles Lakers. He had all the tools, to be an elite swingman when he came in the league, but his unfortunate knee injury looked to quickly be stealing his career from him, but in the last minute, he would embrace a role that saw him leave the game as one of it’s best winners and most respected players; yet one that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.

I met Ron Harper when he was playing for the LA Clippers in the early 90s. It was in NYC at the hottest club in Manhattan at the time
, and one of the greatest clubs in NYC history, a club called Nells. All the celebrities, athletes and professionals hung out there. If you weren't on the guest list or didn't know the doormen, or didn't look the part, you was not getting in. Period. We met at the pool table, and played a game or two. I remember he told me that he was waiting for his Clippers teammate and native New Yorker PG Mark Jackson, who never showed up. What was funny about that night was he had on a Pelle Pelle 8 ball jacket. The problem was it was about 4 years after they were popular in NYC. So he got teased about it (not by me though) in a good natured way. I had played basketball myself and had known and played against top NBA players before, so I knew who he was when I met him. Out of all the pros, Malik Sealy (RIP)(high school teammate), Chris Mullin and Ron Harper are the humblest and nicest NBA players I've known or met. Ron Harper had absolutely no ego, sense of entitlement, or aloofness. None whatsoever. He took the teasing about the jacket he was wearing gracefully. If you didn't know who he was, you would never imagine that he was actually a professional athlete or all-star caliber NBA basketball player. He was that down to earth and humble. He had a trusting, and transparent spirit. He seemed "country", by NYC standards. In a good way. I hung out with him the whole night. Usually when you went to Nells, you went there to meet high quality, beautiful women, but I remember just talking to him the entire night about basketball and life. I remember him buying people drinks that night. If I would have asked him that night for $100 out of need, I'm sure that he would have given it to me with no hesitation. He was that type of brother, a kind soul. I never ran into him again after that fun night at Nells. But, when I watched his future successes with the Bulls and Lakers, and the successes of his basketball playing sons (I believe, as we speak, one of his younger sons is the #1rated high school basketball point guard in the country). I'm not surprised and I'm happy for him, because as my wise mother (RIP) used to always tell me, "good things happen to good people! ".

@@jaahnnn I heard he had a stuttering problem before I met him. I don't recall him stuttering or stuttering a lot. What I do remember was that he talked with a slower pace than what would considered to be normal. Having had relatives who were from very country rural areas, he reminded me of a person who lived all his life in the country and was suddenly thrusted into a city- like environment. I've been around quite a few professional athletes from playing basketball and sports up until my late forties, and Ron Harper's humble almost gentle nature was different. If you met him you would know what I mean.

I did .he played like a Fringed Shooting guard version of Dr J but just couldn't shoot well from outside.

I love players like this willing to adapt their game and to their necessary role.
I mean, he physically couldn't do it anymore. Even before Jordan returned he was only averaging 6 ppg. He wither adapted to a new role or was out of the league

So like Melo scoffed at the bench and remained stubborn even though he wasn't the same and no team would take him for like a year, until he got humbled and finally accepted a lesser role.
The Lakers when it was Kobe and Gasol were willing to get a declining Iverson if he would accept a role as spark plug off the bench. He didn't even have to change his game. He refused because it was off the bench.

Ron Harper was a terror for his opponents. He was scary good. His five NBA championships speak for themselves. I’ve always liked his style and demeanor.
People would be so surprised when I'd pick the Clippers on the 'NBA JAM T.E.' arcade but Harper was my guy on there. He was so well rounded and Dominique made for a great CPU controlled teammate.

I remembered all those games he played,Harper was a very GOOD player with Cleveland and MJ couldn't do anything with Harper.I remember one Harp had 38 pts against MJ,but,Jordan scored 56 pts against Harper in that particular game. LOL. In those early Bull's games ( regular season and playoffs ) MJ had to score BIG numbers in order for the Bull's to win,Cleveland had other scorer's besides Harper-Hot Rod Williams,Mark Price,Craig Echlo,etc,etc,..Cleveland had the better team-IMHO-but,no one on their team could stop/contain-MJ.

As a kid who tore their ACL twice in 2 years in the 90s I looked up to him for coming back from that dreaded injury and was motivated by him! Awesome to see his career story
Demonic Dan! You're probably within 5 years of age of me, one direction or the other. I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. Knock on wood, I have never blown out my knee. Tore an Achilles heel, in 1993 a moderately sprained ankle, and in 2019 popped the tendon behind my lower leg. I JUST hope I can live my life without tearing a knee. Still, my POINT is, things have supposedly really improved, since the 90s, in terms of knee injuries. I knew Bart Brandenburg, whose father coached San Diego State, was going to be an NBA player. But, around 1989, he blew out his knee, and he didn't even play another COLLEGE game! Now, while we still don't wish knee injuries on anybody, it sounds like one can still make a VERY good recovery, if they were to tear their ACL, in 2024. I'm sure it would be costly, and your insurance likely wouldn't cover it for no dire reason, but, if you had work done on your knees in 2024, (since it's more advanced than what you had in 1990) how much athletic ability do you think you'd regain? Maybe at your (our) age, you're a good candidate for knee replacement. Former NFL player, and now local radio talk show host Dave Wyman, said that he got knee replacement, and it feels better than ever! Kudos to YOU, for surviving TWO knee tears. Along with the physical agony, I'm sure that it had a mental and psychological strain on you and your family, too.
Harper was a helluva player. And he had a very impressive overall career. Yet another good report from this channel 💪🏾
the KJ-Nance trade was a rare win win for both teams
I didn't like that trade as a Cavs fan, but they couldn't keep both Price and KJ - it never would have worked. Price was awesome, so I agree - win win
One amusing fact is that in his last NCAA game vs ISU, he didn't start as Guard or Forward, but as Center. The tallest starter was 6'7 but perhaps Harper had a highest vertical jump. So a small ball lineup ahead of time, way before 2018 Rockets.

That Bulls team is hands down the greatest defensive team of all time. 2 players who won DPOY, Rodman twice, another guy in Pip who is one of the best defenders ever, and he and Duncan are the biggest snubs ever for DPOY award, , and then they had one of the best defenders at the pg position in the league at the time. They were so long and lanky. Harp was kind of a liability somewhat on offense though, as pg was not his true position. He was an average passer, and not much of a facilitator...but they had Pip and MJ to take care of that

Their length would cause anyone problems, even the warriors. If they played with hand checking, steph and klay would have problems. Durant too. He was so badly injured in his younger years that he was forced to player a more slow and defensive game. Grant Hill did the same thing after he got severely injured post-Pistons post 2000
Ron Harper on the Cavs was a problem for defenders plus he was in the era of actually playing defense and was good at it. Played physical and smart. Smart enough that even after the injury and totally changing his game and remaining a key piece to a team that became a dynasty thanks to his and other teammates play. Imagine Jordan and Pippen without Harper, Kerr, Hodges, Grant etc etc key players to support their star cast cause as we all know it takes a team. No matter if you have the best player or not they can’t do it by themselves
Hodges and Kerr were below average players for most of their careers. Mark Price, John Williams, Larry Nance, and Brad Daughtery was an extremely solid lineup. The 88 Bulls and 89 Bulls roster wasn't as good as the 88 and 89 Cans roster.

Jordan’s immediate replacement was Pete Myers! I know because I watched it. When Jordan retired in 93, on opening night of the 93/94 season it was Pete Myers who was starting as SG in Jordan’s place. Ron Harper didn’t come until the following season.

I watched most of Mike's career and after that first three-peat when his father was murdered and he retired, I just will never forget watching opening night of the 93-94 season and watching Pete Myers starting in place of Jordan. It was just so odd. That I will never forget! Fast forward years later and when Jordan returns from his second retirement to play with the Wizards I am a senior in college now. I live in VA so I get all the local Wizards games. So when Mike was playing for them I got to watch almost every game he played as Wizard and that chase down block that was a highlight they showed over and over and over and over again! So it sticks out in my mind as something else that I will never forget.
As a huge Ron Harper fan since he entered the NBA and having watched tons of youtube videos featuring him, this is, by far, the best, most comprehensive video I've seen yet. Very well done!
Reading all the comments, there's not much more I can say that already hasn't been said about his career. The real ones in here know! He has been underrated his entire career. He was snubbed for Rookie of the Year in 86-87. He was snubbed for the All-Star game in 89. And his contributions to the Bulls 3peat were also swept underneath the rug from all the media except for local Chicago press. He was 100% the X-Factor on that 3peat team. Without his contributions on both ends of the court, they probably wouldn't have won 1 or 2 of those titles, esp vs the Jazz.
The debate about him being the closest thing to Jordan or him being the Jordan stopper probably depend on who you talk to. Poor Man's Jordan was pretty accurate. No one comes close to MJ other than Kobe in that respect. And although Harp gave MJ problems whenever he guarded him in his Cavs days, he didn't really stop Jordan. But I do think out of all the 2 guards in the league, Harper gave him the most trouble on a consistent basis. Which is why its hard to understand why Lenny Wilkens put Ehlo on him for that last second buzzer beater that will go down as one of the most iconic clutch shots in history. You would think Harper would deny him the ball better and if Jordan did get a shot up, Ron's extra 5"+ of vertical would be more of a deterrent for him to miss that shot. We will never know.
The aging stars of today's NBA who never won a chip could learn a thing or two from Harp's career, esp the ones that are in the twilight of their career(Westbrook, Harden, CP3) by reinventing themselves for the better of the team to win a championship. Iguodala is a perfect example.
What we do know is Harper had an NBA career most every player would be envious of. He played alongside some of greatest NBA legends: MJ, Pippen, Kobe, Shaq, Nique, Rodman, etc. Yes, he never earned an All-Star nod nor win All-NBA or All-Defense, but how many greats can you name that have 5 rings who played a significant role in each? Thats rarified air! And he will tell you straight up, "no regrets!" and wouldn't change anything about his career. Cheers to Hollywood Harp!

Ronnie Harper! My favorite Cav of all-time. I literally cried when he was traded on November 16, 1989. The Cavs have not really had a 2-guard of that caliber since. And....the trade was not because of his association with drug dealers. The owner, Gund, didn't like Harper's relationship with his daughter! If the Cavs were so wary of a player associating wirhin the drug culture, then why did they acquire Shawn Kemp later when his issues with drugs were weel known?! It's been nearly 35 years since that trade and I stiil get upset thinking about it. If that trade had never happened, I truly believe that the Cavs would have won a championship in the 90's! Magic Johnson had even predicted that the Cavs would be, "the team of the 90's"! Yes...Harper is my favorite Cav of all-time. LeBron is surreal and is my ultimate favorite professional athlete of all-time. Does this make sense?

After playing against the Cavs in the 88-89 season, Magic called them the Team of the 90s because of the talent they had with Ron, Mark Price, Brad Daugherty and Larry Nance. Do I think the Cavs win championships if they kept Harper? Who knows? We can never truly know since he got traded, but it guaranteed they would never at least win the East. As you pointed out, he was still very productive as a Clipper even if he lost some of his explosiveness.
That's a always a curse when someone says that about a team, lol. Trading Harper was bad enough, but it was an absolutely horrible trade.

What I like the most about Ron Harper is he competed with the best of them and even after he tore his knee up he cake back still averaging close to 20 ppg and helped the clips make the playoffs. Versitale player. The cavs traded him because they thought he was going to.get indicated but after the trade it never happened sounds like something else behind the scenes was at play

That cavs team was LOADED! They are not talked about near enough. Daughtery, Price, Harper, Ehlo, Nance, and Kerr. 3 all-star players and anove average role players around them. They just couldn't get past MJ. He tended to keep a lot of all time greats from getting a ring

Ron Harper with the Bulls were a nightmare on defense, they had a loaded backcourt in Jordan and Harper and also loaded frontcourt with Pippen, Rodman and Longely. Those guys were big, can move and can defend really well.
The Box Score don't tell the whole story Ron Harper was a huge part of the 2nd 3peat one of the Bulls defensive anchors, he'd cause problems on opponent's offense.

Such a great player. Was exactly what the Clippers needed when he got traded there but, as always, the Clippers Curse got him with that ACL. I don't like what ifs but I really wonder what the Cavs would have done if they had the trio Price-Harper-Daugherty longer. But I also have to say : Ron Harper never reached superstar level because he never developed a consistent enough perimeter shooting (mid-range, 3p, FT). Other than that, he was very good. He even got to the playoffs twice with the Clippers... and then the crash! I think you don't say enough how heavily criticized he was during his first two years with the Bulls. From 20 to 7 pts when you're supposed to be the replacement of MJ... That must have been a really tough time for him... Then I think he and Phil made a fantastic job by making Harper embrace a lesser role, but still important one. And there is no mystery why Phil brought Harper to LA. At the end, 5 titles including 4 as a starter. Respect. And congrats for the great vid!

Insightful video, I always wondered why Cleveland traded Ron Harper to the Clippers at the time especially when Danny Ferry wasn't even available to play for the Cavs for a year. So Cavs got nothing for a year for Harper and it killed their 1990 season. It didn't help that Danny Ferry was a total bust later on

Harp was a great defender. Great in the transition game. Could hit the mid range jumper. Had that insane wingspan but struggled from outside but could knockdown the 3 enough to keep teams honest

No issues with speech. His game did the talking on both ends. If not for injuries we would be speaking about him in a completely different tone and at a different level. Even though his career didn't pan out the way it should have he was able to adapt and evolve, becoming a key role in championship teams. This is a true testament to his sheer will, physical abilities and basketball knowledge.

I don't think Harp had only 10-ish points per games with the Bulls because of injuries. It was his duty to be a supportive member of the team behind MJ, Pippen, and Rodman. And he understood this very well.
Cleveland trading Harper set them back over a decade. It’s not to say that he was a superstar, but he was a star quality 2 guard that could at least match up with young MJ on both ends of the court. They made the ECF in 92 without him but they would have continued to compete to get to the finals with a healthy prime Harper.

Appreciate it. I don't think I'll ever make baseball videos personally, I'm just not a huge fan and don't know nearly enough about the sport or the players to feel confident enough to make a good video.
But I do hope that if the channel continues growing, that one day I can maybe bring someone on who knows a lot about other sports to help expand. So hopefully at some point some baseball vids will hit the channel. Probably won't be for awhile though.

Damn always liked Harper and always have made an argument/claim that Harper had the ability to give Jordan the business before his injury. One thing I never noticed was the similarity to Trevor Ariza physically.
Ron Harper was one part of a stacked Cleveland Cavs team, and I do believe had Cleveland not shot themselves in the foot trading him away, they would have been the ones to ascend before Chicago. I do understand the team was in, and Harper admits the crowd he ran with back then wasn't the best, but nothing ever became of the situation and in turn Cavs ruined what could have been a deep run to the finals.
