  • My favorite technique for clean-looking stair treads with PVC or composite decking. No unfinished edges, and miters that stay tight as temperatures change.

    Very nice! Are stainless steel screws required for composite decking or did you choose them because they are more corrosion resistant compared to regular deck screws?

      I chose them because they're more corrosion resistant - but an epoxy coated deck screw that size would be suitable. The main thing was finding size and length that would work for pocket holes on 5/4" boards.

    Ahh, so these are not natural materials. How fire resistant is this, relative to a properly cared for deck made with natural materials that are treated for marine or extended ground contact use?

      This is Azek PVC, and it's ASTM E-84 Class A fire-rated which means it can resist flame spread even in severe fire exposure (although I'm sure it will deform and melt). Pressure treated wood is much, much more flammable unless it's a special type designated as being treated with fire retardant chemicals.
