- Can the new DeWalt DCF845 XR flagship impact driver become the king of them all? I put it to the test against the Atomic DCF850, DCF840, DCF787, XR DCF887, Atomic DCF809 and brushed DCF885.

Awesome work on the visualizations! The best I’ve seen for one of these tool comparison videos. Also appreciate your completeness in covering the lineup.
NO its not, see comment, as an engineer u have a blind spot
@@mos8541 I agree with the comments about many of these tests not being relevant.
However that has no bearing on the high quality of the actual presentation or the range of models included.
I have been considering one of the Drivers for use at home, and have not been able to find a comprehensive chart of relevant info and comparisons on the models til this video. So I agree.
I've had the 885 for many years now. I could literally smell it when you tested it. 😂
Man I know exactly what you mean mine absolutely buzzes, I really need to upgrade but don't know what for 🤣
I bought the 850 at Big Orange just over 2 years ago when it was just released (I found it in top stock and had an employee pull it for the buy-2-batteries-&-charger-get-tool-free promotion) and I love it. I had bought an 887 just a couple weeks prior and hadn't used it. I gave that to my brother-in-law for Xmas last year and he's happy with it.
Great job on this! The more I see the 850 in action, the more impressed by it I am.
loved the graph on the side, really great way to keep track of everything.
Surprising results for sure. Interesting how the tables turned from speed to torque. Awesome job on the video and all the details Jim. I know this takes a lot of work and much editing time. It's noticed and appreciated! God bless!
I love both the DCF885 and the DCF850. I've tried all the others (but the newer 845) and those are my two favorites, hands-down.
The 850 for its compactness and the 885 for its feel in the hand (very well balanced tool).
Hell yeahh!! 850 my fave impact!! hammer drill is the 805 or the 999 with flexible advantage 👍
Really love the new graphics. And that trigger discipline!
Awesome Review....I got my DeWalt dcf845 in last week (2/15/23) I used it for 1 day , expecting it to be the Best DeWalt Impact Driver yet and it Flopped , I went right back to my dcf850 the next day and it's 14 months old at this point , I use that Impact almost everyday and it still feels like New . I'll say this , the dcf845 IS a bit more Refined , it's smoother , and actually Doesn't have that Bit Wobble that my dcf887 had pretty badly ..... Still Love my DeWalt tools though .....👍🖖
The 850 is my absolute favorite. It's compact and stupid powerful. Torque test channel has a great video on it and they also confirmed that it's still the strongest
Lol I just saw your channel and you've already collaborated with them. No wonder your video was good and not just another sales pitch
DCF887 works pretty well overall for me. Although I'm on my third 887 in three years. Problems with bit holder and trigger switch on the first two. Still usable for around the house though. 👍
I have friends that have had the same issues with the 887 but I've had mine since 2017 and have never had any issues
that graph is amazing bro. good job evolving that.
I deicded to switch from Makita to Dewalt and started with the DWS520 and DCF850. Awesome tools. One thing: Torque is measured in NM not in Bodypart/OutdatedSomething
The 850 should have XR branding on it imo. I get the marketing issues they’d have with the whole atomic thing, but XR is supposed to be the flagship, and it’s not the fastest or strongest, hell it’s not even the best looking. If I were getting into the Dewalt line, the 850 would be the one I’d pick up.
Overseas it's actually branded as XR, go figure 🤔
@@PhillyFixed it sounds like they know it too then lol. They won’t take any sales hits because of it, but it’s not a good look for the XR brand. I’d have went with atomic regardless, just because of the nature of woodworking and custom furniture and needing the extra clearance from the smaller form factor.
The problem is public perception. The unwashed masses don’t know how much power the 850 really has. All they see is a tiny impact. Dewalt is milking the bigger models that are cheaper to make. They know how much power the 850 makes they want to see how much demand is generated by these online reviewers vs. just the floor display models where none would be the wiser passing by.
Beat me to it Jim. Here in the UK it’s branded as an XR model and no mention as an Atomic. I think that’s the way to go as it’s a stand out tool for me in Dewalts range as well as impact drivers in general.
@@Griffinwoodworks
You’re dead wrong. Home Depot’s DeWalt “Atomic” line is for DYI customers, customers who don’t put a lot of hours on their DeWalt tool(s), and or customers who don’t know the XR is the high performance line.
The 840 is the deal because that’s an XR without the “XR” stamped on it. It was clearly the best *DRIVER* out of the group. The 840 is also smaller, lighter, and has a much better balance in the hand than the 850. The 850 would be uncomfortable to hold all day, with the fat heavy head on it throwing the balance off, for people who have to drive a high amount of screws, lags, etc. on a regular basis.
The 850 is a money grab for DeWalt just like a vast majority of the rest of their Home Depot line…which is their weaker performing line when high performance is needed.
I still have my 885 and I like to bring it out once in a while. It can definitely still hold its own
I now feel great with my purchase of the 840 kit. Came with 2 batteries and a charger for $100 from lowes. It won the first 2 tests hands down. That last test well 😅 that's what 1/2 air impacts are for. Home depot has a similar kit for $100 but it's the 809 eww. Great video 👍
My thoughts exactly. I saw Northern Tool had some tools/sets on sale heading into Memorial Day...started comparison shopping, and found the same deal you did at Lowes (similar at HD). And minus 10% mil discount makes it $90! Or at NT, go with the 809for $99 add a small $1 item to use the $20 off $100 coupon making it $80 (for the 809). I have been trying to compare the 809 and 840 and think the 840 is the way to go...esp w/ two batts and charger...versus the more expensive 850 for what I will use it for (not braking lug nuts).
New DeWalt impacts aren't like the old school post type , but I am pretty happy with my atomic and my 887 .
Don't comment vary often on videos but MAN THIS VIDEO WAS AWSOME!!!! Really good tests 👏, excellent graphics 👍 and very entertaining. Have to do the same one with the Makitas!!!!!!!
Makitas coming soon!
@@PhillyFixed 👍 Love Makita ❤️
Needed a new drill for deck and fence screws so thanks to your reviews I bought an 840
Man, your formatting and organization and the clarity of these videos is crazy good! Definitely earned a sub!!
DCF805 is so phenomenal... With shortest body, but it has the highest torque power... So amazing... Maybe if we use to drive, the power is big enough to ruin our bolt and nut.. It's my opinion, thank you for sharing. I do appreciate it 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😊
Dude this new video format is amazing!! Please do more tests like this, easily one of my favorite tool channels for sure 🤟🏼🤟🏼
I've never owned a dewalt drill in my 10 years of being an electrician, but I need that little stubby. This video definitely helped me decide!
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous at how good you're editing skills are. Great video man!
I use a DeWalt dcf888 and have had zero issues. Plenty of power and batteries last. I do commercial HVAC and DeWalt dcf888 is the way to go in my opinion.
Yup, same as the 887 except with the tool connect feature.
The 850 is an XR model everywhere else in the world except the US.
I love my 850, but mine broke so i bought a 845 with 2 PS for 179.00 no regrets.
All Atomic tools are only called Atomic in the North American market. Look at the compact impact wrenches, compact SDS, compact bandsaw, etc.. In the US/Canada they are branded Atomic, elsewhere they are branded compact XR.
Yes the 850 is a XR in UK, i just got Kit DCK2050M2 at Home Depot in the AZ. It came with 2, 4HM batteries branded XR. With hammer drill DCD805 XR branded.
This was the most helpful video on these models and exactly what I needed to see. 850 it is!
at 7:21 is the 887 set to tightening the nut instead of releasing?
Ive had rhe old 885 brushed model for a long time and its been very good never failed
Love the bar timers bud. WTF is going on with this 845?😂. The video couldn’t have went any better man. Turned out great
reviewing this again .this really is a good review . Easy to grasp your results ,good diagrams .
I love my 850, it an absolute work horse for me. Its obviously the most compact out of all of them, & with the power stack on it its the lightest. Thats why i have 2 of em!
I'M SO GLAD I BOUGHT THE DCF850......IT'S A BEAST.
Love this comparison video and I think I'm going for the 850!
Dewalt is the GM of the tool brands: they have so many models doing the same.
The fact they sell Home Depot Exclusives and Lowe's Exclusives adds an extra layer of complexity and extra resources that would work better if they just had 3 or 4 models to care for
And of course, so of those "exclusives" are the same tools (looking at you Power Detect/Flexvolt Advantage). Making it extra funny that the other retailers like Acme carry both.
But they sell a ton of tools...
@@reginalb124 true they sell a ton worldwide. I think they're still no. 1 in sales but something tells me they don't have the biggest profit of them all and these kind of extra R&D, validation, certifications and related stuff may be part of the problem.
When you need more brands and lineups to sell just slightly more than the competition you know it will hit profits, just like it did with GM at the turn of the century where its 8 brands or so proved too many as more automakers hit the market with more competitive products.
I can see badge Engineering on Dewalt more often than any other brands, just look at the new Lowe's exclusive 20V drill DCD793. It looks the same as the old Atomic 708 that's just been replaced by the 794.
@@reginalb124 another reason I know they're not doing that well in profits is the recent announcement of SBD shutting down a SC and a TX factory.
You shouldn't expect that from the #1 selling power tool company.
But once again they just have too much clutter
Great work on the graphs.
Like you said, I think the 840s are specifically for roofers or someone driving in thousands of screws. They're comfortable to use for long periods and have that big, long, beefy gearbox that isn't going to overheat or break in a hurry.
I have the 850, it is truly a brute.
Very helpful. Finding the best deal on a Dewalt tool is tough because of the mixed up numbering system.
Great video! Great visuals. Perfect for weeding out the Dewalt over inflated tools. Drills are even worse. They have like 20 drills.
Xclnt production!! Bars and graphics provide clear and discernable comparisons!!
My 787 is a daily and never lets me down im in transport refrigeration and at the time the price was great battery's last forever during use.
That brushed one tho its impressive but like my dewalt brushed grinder as good as it is it will be power hungry.
It really seemed like a simple design process to devise the flagship. Take the DCF850... and make it slightly longer and give it more RPM/IPM. How they didn't figure that out is beyond me.
If you open up the 850 you can see the motor is unbelievably tiny. That means whatever mathematics they’re using in the gearbox is way more efficient than anything else on the market. Imagine that scaled up to something the size of the 921, that’s only about 20% more powerful in testing, with a gearbox twice the size.
I would love a bit more power in my 850, at least after having tried milwaukee impacts which are much more powerful - but still compact. However the 850 is still a good performer when you consider how tiny it is.
I bought one loved it so much had to get it second one
@@jasonvandervalk3679 I highly recommend doing the 3/8 anvil modification. It's so easy to take out bolts in very tight spots. I put a 3 inch extension on mine and there's no way I'd go back to a bigger impact.
Let's try DCF 860 & DCF 870 !!!
That 850 is a beast when it comes to torque, I am definitely getting a new one instead of switching
really like the video, setup, visuals, super easy to follow. not even a dewalt guy
Amazing video and visual charts. This is an awesome comparison that’s clear and concise. Thank you!
I have the 887 and then I got the 850 atomic and I love my 850 it’s compact and powerful for what I do I highly recommend it
This video makes me feel good because I chose the 850 after an extensive study.
The DCF850 is an absolute monster; ESPECIALLY with the Power Stack battery. Also - the Norske bit holder (review by PF) is wicked nice
Norske 🤌💯
Well up through the 887, I can't speak to the newer ones, but a LOT of tradesmen preferred the old "linear" 885 and its variable speed control over the 887 that was also known to smoke...AND they just get less and less expensive for what is still a nice impact driver for anyone. But, if you are a homeowner just starting into a more expensive platform and choosing black and yellow, you would NOT be wrong in choosing it as a place to start.. And if going with a hammer drill the old 796 will get it done also...ask the Ryobi hammer drill that flew across the yard one day when using both with different bits.
We’ve had two of the dcf885 for 10 years. They have been good us, one of the best from dewalt
Really good incite to what these are actually used for as you nailed it when you said these are for screws not blowing bolts in and out as you would buy a impact wrench not driver
Feeling good about my new purchase of the 850 I was worried for a second
So satisfied with the presentation, awesome video, thank you
Awesome review Jim, really enjoying your videos. Still waiting for Makita td171 vs xdt16 review though.
I have them both XTD 19 in the US. Performance similar but the 19 has some ergonomics I prefer. But I love all my Makita impacts. I have 5
Graphs and visuals were awesome
Excellent video and testing. Overall I think I did well buying the 887 5+ years ago. Cheers!
SUPER MEGA FANTASTIC REVIEW! THANK YOU FOR ONLY 10 MIN)
Super test, very interesting. I don't know that 840 so bad in torque
I've got a few work buddies that are still rocking the 885's. We had a recent death from the tool boxes. An 845 got ran over a truck.
Excellent clear explanations, will drive me to take my decision, thank you!
So I did enjoy your tests and it is good information. But people concluding that the DCF845 is a (insert negative hyperbolic phrase here) is the downside of these tool testing videos that I do enjoy.
The driving deck screws test is representative for what 95+% of what impact drivers are used for, yet videos driving 12 inch lags into tree stumps and nut busting torque tests confuse people (who should know better) into thinking those are just as important.
I like that you mentioned the relevance of the tests into perspective, but many people just look at the numbers, without regards to their importance.
This is true
Holy crap ask and you shall receive. This is the exact video I needed.
But wait the 860 just came out! 😂😂🎉😊
Best presentation I've watched to date!! 👌
I would love to see dewalt put a little of the energy they put into the drivers, into making a 1/4 impact wrench. It seems we have everything except a 1/4 impact wrench within the 20v family
I have a few of the 887’s and a couple of the 850’s. I was going to upgrade the 887’s with the new 845 but now I’m just going to keep my 887’s.
I was there in 2011 to 2015 as crane operator. Now I'm in tanajib marine STEVEDORING
Glad I bought the 850 was like a loyal fan watching this lol
One of the best videos on RUclips I’ve watched this atleast 3 different times when looking into modifying or purchasing another driver. Thanks. Any chance you would do something like this with the dewalt DCD line up?
just like everyone is saying, the graphics were so good and so satisfying to watch and very easy to understand! I have an 840 and it was my first drill because of the price on the holidays but for my job in framing now I know I made the right choice without even knowing it and this video makes me appreciate more my impact because now I understand what it's good for. Thank you! /Subscribed!
How's it holding up? Just got the 840 kit myself for a steal of $100 w/batteries and charger. Going to be using it on small bolts and screws for mechanic job. Nothing to crazy like in the last test lol.
I have the 885, had it for Many years. Been a very good tool and it's heavily worn. Looking to replace it with brushless
The 885 is STILL way more driver than the overwhelming majority of homeowners will ever need! 😂
Surprising results. Enjoyed the video. Thanks Jim💪
Great to see my 887 is punching quite high, how ever I would never use my own on such big nuts, these tools are fantastic, but on big stuff thay get almost to hot to touch quickly and if you keep on doing that trust me you kill them in about a year
Yeah definitely wouldn't use impact drivers for those tasks regularly.
Dewalt power detect or flexvolt drills vs all other drills out there would be a nice test. I have the power detect and it's the nicest drill I've ever used by a mile. Most power detect and 60 Volt tools are crushing other brands right now.
what is the exact model number? they have so many...lol
Cool comparison! Although you don't have their best in your lineup(895). I got 2 makitas, an 887, a freak, and the 895. The 895 is by far my favorite. The push button chuck is still the best ever made.
Unfortunately you can't buy it new anymore so I didn't include it, but it's a cool tool!
Awesome format/visualizations for the video!
Looks like whichever one you can get cheapest is the best deal. They all work pretty good
I would say that for the 887, 840, 845, 850. I wouldn't bother with the other two though. The 840 goes on sale in a kit with cheap batteries for $99 at Lowe's periodically.
If you have a regular set of tests you perform and time, then we can compare tools across different videos.
for example how does DCF850 vs TD111 compare
850= Great50. Táctics broke the news that the 850 overseas is an XR tool. Just rebranded in the states as Atomic so HD gets exclusivity. It’s the 850N in lieu of the 850B. Internals are the same. I can email you the details if the people don’t believe me! Lol. DCF850E2T-GB.
Great comparison THANKYOU
Great stuff. 850/840 combo for carpentry to get all jobs done
I agree that the DCF850 is still the most attractive option from the Dewalt impact driver line, but the 845 is a close second. DCF840 with no modes or speed settings is a distant 3rd, but still nice at the price for what it can do.
Never used impacts but looking for one, and in this test it seems 887 is coming out as second. Any reason you leaving it out?
@@TheFizzerKing Well for doing the things you typically use an impact driver for it is behind the 840, 845 and 850
@@TheFizzerKing Mostly because it is a 7+ year old model, is pretty rough compared to newer models. You can also see videos of it going up in smoke when overworked because it's electronics don't protect the tool as well (although I doubt this an issue for people who won't abuse their tools). But it is really a fine tool. Just dated at this point
@@ccbowers ok thanks.
So smoother action on the newer ones?
I do home renovation and have done fine with my drill/drivers. But was looking for more. Batteries and found a great deal with the 887 and 2 batteries ( basically the same price as just 2 batteries.) The 845 does not seem to be available in my country yet.
And now I see that there is a Ryobi pole lopper, which is $279 for kit with battery and charger. Pricey and limited to 1 and 1/4 inch branches. I would wait for a sale
850 is hell of a beast 🔥🔥
Thank you, really excellent video.
I bought the 850 when it came out and I couldn't understand why they didn't make it an XR upgrade to the 887. It's a beast and I've put it thru alot
Overseas it actually is branded XR!
Milwaukee next? Include older gens as well?
I have several of these, and they're pretty much indistinguishable from one another in everyday use.
I would say the 787 and 805 are noticably inferior to the rest, but that's probably the only distinction I could make blindfolded.
dang, everyone making vids today
Video format reminds of project farm and shop tool reviews.... I subbed. I too post shorts about my dewalt tools 🤗 love that black and yellow
8:10 it should count if it's moving
Yeah I probably could've given it that one
Super test !!! Good video
I have one of the original 887's I don't see a compelling reason to upgrade at all - for 7 years old it holds its own pretty well. Certainly a 845 seems to be a downgrade - the 850 would probably be the closest upgrade and that would be for torque but I have a 1/2" and 3/4" impact for that stuff anyway.
I'd say the collet is improved on the newer models, I noticed a lot of runout of the 887 with longer bits. Less vibration as well. But the 887 certainly gets the job done 👍
@@PhillyFixed my collet is pretty dang loose - lots of years of abuse. That is why I had been eyeing new models. At this point a new collet is looking pretty good. I had mainly been eyeing the 850 Atomic but short/fat head makes it arguably worse for pocket holes, but the depth makes it better. Either way at this point I have no reason to spend another $150 to “side grade”
Awesome work
Loved the video but how can you not show the 887 any love. It was top three in all categories?
My 887 has taken everything I've thrown at it. I only dropped it in metal dust once or twice a week, and it's only fallen off a roof a couple of times.
Why does everyone only drive screws into wood. I want to know what design is better for working 20’ on extension ladder having only one hand at a time. To remove and install service panels. If you have been there, you know if you haven’t, you don’t. Basically usability in awkward positions.
My 840 takes bolts and nuts off pretty well, but you have to push on it, the nose cone moves back and forth
How is it holding up? Just picked up a kit myself for car work. Definitely not lugnuts lol
Awesome testing. Loved your new time/graph thing. Excellent editing! Great video. It just adds to what I already thought about DeWalt. Thier offerings are confusing, bloated, and miss leading. Especially thier impact line up, which was just proven. I know several people who had the old brushed models and loved them. Decided to go brushless and were totally let down. Had the old brushed model rebuilt, then ran it against thier new brushless and got spanked. DeWalt is SO overated !
I agree they have too many models in certain categories, I wouldn't go so far as to say they're overrated. They just need to discontinue their lowest end models.
I have 6 off the DCF850 i love then just because it’s really small for narrow areas …
