Some of my earliest memories of feeling shame about my body were brought on by things I saw watching Oprah with my mom. When I started my weightloss journey I made sure to do the opposite of her advice. I lost 135lbs in 2019 and never looked back, no thanks to her. She’s made it very clear she values size over health, and being thin at any cost. Thanks for covering this because I would have never watched it other wise.

Years ago my roommate hit me hard, with what he said. We were all eating breakfast, roommates, friends, etc, after a all night party. Lots of the guys were not wearing shirts. My roommate said I should go put a shirt on. I was like, everyone is not wearing there shirt, you put a shirt on. Then he told me, he was grossed out, by the way I looked. I don't remember exactly what I did after that. I think I just went to my room. I bet I was crying.

Oprah’s struggle with her weight is one of the few things she shares with the huge number of overweight people in this country. The fact that tabloids and late night comedians make it a punchline is something different. Most of us only have ourselves, and maybe an obnoxious friends relative or acquaintance who isn’t as polite as most telling us to lose weight.

She is just saying the same thing as she has done since the beginning of her show. It's the exactly the same B.S. as what she has said before. It's just be awhile since we've seen her in this same type of format. She is a great speaker who can engage people, being humble. The story of the shoes is the example (and at the time it was true, but that was like 40 years ago, not last week.). She hasen't learned anything except how to make money, which she has done very well. The fact that she was an part owner in weight watchers is also problematic. She is still promoting that being 'thin' by any means is the way to value ourselves.

I will go month or years not looking or thinking about my weight bc I'm so focused on other things. Then you have that oh I can't tie my shoe easily moment and then you either make changes or you keep going on as you were.
It important to start having these conversations. Even today I may not be losing weight quickly or by eating a restricted diet, but the changes to my everyday are huge. But many people think you have to do stuff like Oprah did when you are trying to lose weight. And it's sad.

I saw her ping pong around growing up and never understood when she was suddenly on weight watchers why people would fall for a celebrity endorcing a weight loss program. I mean my thought process was geeze this person who could afford a personal chef if she wanted to loost weight she could have a chef and nutritionist sit down with a list of her preferences and make everything she put in her mouth for her ... how hard is that? Obviously its more than that.
I remember my mom being on ww and she went sort of cray cray on it eating rice cakes with swiss cheese and apples ... i still have the smell of microwaved swiss in my memory 🤢 and she did loose a little bit gained it back and eventually settled into eating for health ....then my ex in laws did weight watchers when I was older i watched them both struggle in their own weight fil lost weight even though he would make himself zero point meals with ice berg lettuce and a half cup of ketchup.. tried to explain to him that the 0 points was for 1 serving of ketchup not a half cup of course he got mad at me (I was also heavy back then and they tried to push me into weight loss surgery and I said no) my mil was upset cause fil was loosing a little and she wasnt so would eat like 7 ww points a day.. i was like you need to eat in the points they want you to or your body will think its starving she eventually gave me a bag of peanut m&ms to give her a specific number of a day when she asked it helped her get towards the number and she started loosing weight. I had to stay with them during this time, because my ex was out of town aaaaanywho they went out to eat a LOT i was not invited and carless I didnt want to be a bother so just ate what they had on hand it was so much sugar free no fat no sugar stuff .. i didnt loose weight i just got sick had my period for a whole month and hair was falling out it was crazy. My mom and grandparents happened to be coming through and asked me to go with them and i did with in a week of eating real food again everything stopped my hair stopped falling out and everything. I was in my 20s back then but really thibk thats one of the times that really messed me up

your true friends will tell you when you need to lose weight. those who care disregard the awkwardness and risk the friendship to do what’s best for you, ultimately. those who don’t call you out are the same people who would look away if you suffered from any other drug addiction. they’re more concerned with how you feel about them than with your wellbeing. if your friend’s weight is detrimental to his or her health, you should be upfront with them about it. do it in a polite way, but remain firm. talk to them the way you would if they had a heroin addiction. assist them in getting help and keep on them. don’t sit back and watch them kill themselves with food. it’s unkind.

I don’t know much about Oprah but I’m on weight watchers myself and really think it’s not the company’s fault for anyone’s bad feelings about weight, at least not now. In the past, they were awful, but now they promote slow weight loss, giving yourself grace, and healthy habit forming to live as your goal weight forever. People can take what they want from it, but imo, if you have a good coach, that’s all that matters. They always say no foods are “off limits” and you can just have small portions of “bad” foods. My coach always tells us how she struggled for decades keeping the weight off, but learned that it truly does need to be a lifestyle change to make it permanent. I think any weight loss program could be used for good or bad, it just depends on the person.

I remember part of one of her shows -- either soon after she lost all that weight on the liquid diet or soon after--an older woman in the audience actually told her, "I liked you better when you were fat." I'm sure she never forgot that, straight from the mouth of one of her viewers.

Hell yeah, a live stream with him talking about this would be a fun watch. I agree that shame is enough to get started on a weight loss journey, but only self love will motivate a person to keep it going. And Oprah is just going with whatever she can make money on. Now its the shots, and in 5 years it'll be some new gimmick. Shes as disingenuous as the snakes she promotes on her show.

The Joan Rivers clip is crazy, but Oprah brings up her weight and seems ready with a diet program to promote. It feels like it was always meant to be a talking point, even if the delivery of it is very harsh. I just feep Oprah is always promoting weight loss systems for financial gain, and probbaly is now again.

would you say about a drug addict “leave them alone. they’re doing the best they know how at this moment”? no of course not. you would acknowledge that they are self harming and encourage them to seek treatment. it’s unkind to watch people eat themselves to illness and death without trying to intervene. as usual, oprah is playing the nice lady while doling out detrimental advice.

I've also struggled with my weight my whole life, I've been called or said much unhinged stuff by people, but that doesn't mean I have to go around and do the same to others. 😅

Grown people don't appeal to emotion in the face of inconvenient facts.
It is not shaming to say obesity is unhealthy.
Grown people take responsibility for their health.

    • @JohnNathanShopper
      @JohnNathanShopper 24 дня назад +2

That’s a vast oversimplification. Appeals to emotion are not the domain of children. Any basic class in editorial writing or speechwriting or litigation will strongly focus on appeals to emotion. Maybe there’s a point where it’s too much, but we’re living in an age of cultural counterpoints where body shaming is a counterpoint to widespread obesity and diabetes.

You cannot shame people out of years of bad habits, mental health, childhood trauma, or whatever else humans have going on with them. Studies show this to be a fact. It's an "inconvenient fact" to people who are "concerned for people's health" because they have never actually researched obesity medicine or social determinants of health but wanna talk the loudest. It's okay to admit you don't know enough about a subject and stick to your own life.

Nothing in my comment is shaming anyone.
Also nothing you mentioned causes obesity.
Only excessive calorie consumption does that.
Addressing the root cause of maladaptive behaviors is important, but the behaviors themselves must also be addressed.
Take several deep breaths and try reading my comment from a neutral perspective.

if i have to pay more for food and health insurance (and i do) because of others’ obesity, then i’m certainly not gonna “just be happy” letting them live however they want. if they’re spilling out into my bus or plane seat, i’m not gonna smile and let them be. the moment their choices affect me, that’s when it stops being their decision alone. i’m absolutely entitled to have an opinion and i refuse to pretend obesity is normal or healthy. we are not doing anyone any favors by playing along with this FA nonsense. your struggle with your weight IS your fault. telling people that they are powerless against it is disempowering and disgusting. ww was correct in saying your diet is “your choice.” the environment, genetics, etc makes no one obese. the only way to become obese, and maintain that weight, is to grossly overeat regularly. that’s an inconvenient fact. oprah herself has proven that dieting works. food is the answer. you stay thin until you return to eating calorie-laden foods or begin overeating. no other factors come into play. ozempic worked for oprah because it reduced her appetite. she ate less and lost weight. that proves it! no outside forces intervened. her genes, environment, society and fat phobia amounted to nothing. it was calories in/calories out. it always is.

She can't control her appetite without help. It doesn't matter if she has a nutritionist and personal trainer if she can't stop overeating. Some people need more than just willpower to control their eating habits. Also, many medicines are used for other off-label purposes. Lighten up.
