Most ED dieticians will put you on a strict plan at the beginning of your recovery. They won't count calories and i dont think they should. They will make you eat certain amount of exchanges/servings of type of food so you get a balanced meal.

The whole point of avoiding unhealthy foods is that healthy food is filling. I can eat 1600 calories a day from Wendy’s, but I’ll be more hungry and thirsty by the end of the day than if I had egg whites, oatmeal, and salad. This is like saying the sky is blue.

The idea of moderation has also gotten way more difficult the last decade. A sweet treat was once understood to be around 500 calories. But these days we have singular milk shakes and cookies that are 1000+ calories and you have to jump through hoops to even find the nutrition label.
A Twinkie was once considered one of the most unhealthy things you could buy but now its not uncommon to see something with 3x as much calories and sugar. There's just so many things that you can't moderate. You can't eat a 1000 calorie cookie in moderation. The moderated version is still very unhealthy

Anti-Diet dieticians also ignore that when someone has disregulated hunger/satiety signals due to YEARS of overeating, they can’t just “follow their body’s cues.” Because their body is going to always tell them to eat more than they should to lose weight.
But then if they intentionally try to “be hungry” knowing they need to so they can lose weight, if they’re not tracking, they could end up UNDERCONSUMING food and eating unhealthily little, setting up a binge-restrict cycle. So tracking helps many people get into a HEALTHY DEFICIT and lose at an appropriate rate, while still being able to eat some of the foods they enjoy.

I tried the anti diet/ intuitive eating thing. I gained 20 pounds. The thing is, these people insist that if you're eating too much its because you have an unhealthy relationship with food, you have a binge eating disorder bc you feel guilty for eating "bad foods," and if you eat intuitively you will be fine.
But I don't have an unhealthy relationship with food. I don't binge, I don't like feeling too full. I was raised to eat healthy but to still enjoy a delicious meal from time to time bc food is tasty. My problem is that cooking is hard, and a healthy home cooked meal will *never* taste as good as fast food. I wasn't binging, I was just eating calorie dense meals every single day bc they're delicious.
Everything is ok I'm moderation, but these dietitians don't teach moderation. They say "eat whatever you want and heal your relationship with food and then you'll be skinny like me." But have you literally ever met anyone who has it all together to the point where they can do that? Bc I haven't. They don't exist. Everyone has things they struggle with, even if they're one of the lucky bastards that doesn't suffer from mental illness. And your diet is always tied to how you feel emotionally. In this day and age where food is built to be addictive, most people have to restrict in some way.

A key part of the anti diet movement is letting go of the pursuit of intentional weight loss. It's building in habits that support physical, emotional health without that pursuit or obsession on weight. The thing that I really dislike is 99 percent of anti diet dietitians on social media are naturally thin, white, conventionally attractive women...who know absolutely nothing about what it's like to be fat in this world. And that it gets extreme and rigid and "culty" rather than being person centred and focused on body autonomy.

I used to have a binge eating disorder and my relationship with food was messed up for almost 4 years. Last year I decided to change my habits so I would stop binge eating. I started to eat breakfast and stopped restricting my calories during the day, which in turn reduced the cravings at night. I tracked my calories so I had a better understanding of what I was eating. After a year of counting calories, I can finally say that I feel confident enough to stop tracking them. I do agree you should be in recovery for a certain amount of time and be very mindful with how you’re going about weight loss. Once I decided it was safe enough for me and was approved by my ED therapist, I started counting calories. I’ve lost 23 pounds in 4 months and counting calories has actually been incredibly HELPFUL for my recovery. It’s giving me space to eat whatever I want, just in moderation. For the first time in my life I feel like I can actually enjoy food, because I’m actually taking the time to think about it, to learn about nutrition and to savor s smaller portion. I stopped doing cheat days because it was so triggering and I would end up eating stuff I didn’t need and feeling sick. If anything, counting calories has taught me more about intuitive eating than a treatment center and support groups ever could.

I recently had to start tracking again because I was going back to old habits of bigger portions, less filling foods, and gaining weight. I’ve struggled with weight for a while & I think pushing certain philosophies when it comes to nutrition & dieting can become problematic. We’re human, we only hear what we want to hear & then take it to the extremes. No food is bad but processed foods are so far from natural & shouldn’t be “pushed” to a consumer who blindly follows what anyone says if they claim to be an expert.

You are correct - You need to “earn that freedom”. Dave Ramsey says about getting out of debt: “You need to live like no one else so that you can live like no one else”. This also applies to a weight loss journey - Like it or not you’re gonna have to say NO a lot but the rewards will be paramount.

Body weight is only one component of food…as someone with a low bmi and fairly low body weight, turning 60 this year and moderately to heavily active with both strength training and cardio, I’m completely metabolic w autoimmune problems, eye problems, moderate a1c borderline type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, anxiety, hyper pigmentation, exercise induced hypertension, post menopause and alopecia… I eat okay now but not so great for years because I never really gained much weight. so you know nothing is bad for you until it is and that happens exponentially as we age. You can eat and be thin and still get sick later in life from cumulative food choices along the way. I think it’s a good habit to be mindful of what your body may or may not do later in life as a result of nutrition or lack of. Our highly processed American diets aren’t always going to make us obese but they can make us sick. I’m learning that now :( salt, sugar, bad oils, chemicals…ugh
I remember when food labels weren’t even a thing, so at least we have that info now! Cocaine 80s was total diet culture and everything was fat free and carbs and then heroin 90s was just starvation…idk… seems silly nobody can get food culture right w all the media we have access to. It’s all sort of hyperbole and cash 💰 grabs…
❤ ugh so yeah good luck 🍀 with food journeys… they are complicated.

Tracking calories, both in and out, along with macros has been an absolute ~life changer~ for me.
Before that when I was eyeballing, free-spooning and getting suckered by Health Halos, I was pulling my hair out cos I couldn't lose weight. THEN I saw why. Tracking enabled me to crack the case!
It also provides the structure to allow me to fit in a cheat meal a few times a year.
And you're so right: being in tune with your hunger (vs cravings) and satiety is a ~skill~. Until that skill is honed, plus if you're a newbie with an impaired palate; temporary abstinence from foods that "awaken The Snakken" is just easier in the beginning.
But tracking calories and macros, et al, is no more "disordered" than checking your bank balance.

We are often unaware at how many calories we are eating - but also how many we are burning.
At home I try and watch what I eat and I still sometimes gain a bit of weight if I am going through a stressful time, simply because I don’t move much aka have an office job/ work from home. On holidays I never watch what I eat and just order whatever. I rarely gain weight - sometimes even loose some. But that is not due to healthier food, but because I just move my body sooooo much more when travelling.
My friend said she gained 5lbs in 2 months because she simply walked less in her new job. She didn’t change anything in her diet or workout routine. It’s the “hidden” exercise that can make a huge difference and that we often forget….

I’m not much younger than you, but I feel like I was never pressured to be super skinny. Even as a teenage girl, I don’t remember ever feeling pressured to lose weight. Given I was not a very overweight girl, but I remember doing a BMI test as a freshman in high school and the coach doing it emphasizing that this is not indicative of your health, or even if you truly are obese (I was a three sport athlete so my muscle mass was relatively high). I did not watch a lot of media, though, so I’m sure that those women were pressured to be really thin, but I found that as somebody who did not go on social media or watch a lot of fashion TV I never felt like I needed to be rail thin. I definitely did not want to be “fat”, but the threshold for what was fat definitely was not super crazy low.
But it is kind of funny to me that people even have this criticism of the media causing eating disorders when obesity is continually going up and obesity rates among youth are also increasing. Like yeah, maybe there is a lot of media pressure to be thin, but it’s clearly not working…

The more I see and hear people talking about diet culture, the more it seems to be becoming a scapegoat to excuse people from thinking for themselves. It comes back to media literacy, IMO. If you're fat and desperate to lose weight and willing to try anything, you need to do what's best for you and slow down and take the time to figure out what's actually going to help you achieve your goals. Listening to anything and everything you hear on social media is foolish and I don't think just blaming diet culture will help. People need to take what power they can into their hands and go out and get the knowledge or help they're looking for, not scroll their phones and wait for someone else to spoonfeed them the solution.

If I don’t monitor my caloric intake most days, I will start to get back to a place where I think it doesn’t matter and then eventually I’ll gain weight again. So for some of us, calories absolutely matter and we don’t have a relationship with food that allows us to eat intuitively and not gain weight. Because my intuition still tells me to eat emotionally and to eat past the point of fullness which is something I am still working to heal. But I am very much against trying to convince the masses that we should just be eating whatever the hell we want and however much we want. Clearly that’s not working.

I think anti-diet dieticians have their place in the wellness community the same way I think holistic nutritionists do, even if I don't agree with all of their approaches. The issue comes with the fact that social media is free for everyone in that you're probably going to see their content even if it's not directed at you. People should be able to scroll by if it's not for them, but they don't. Everyone in my nutrition program had mostly different approaches to food and diet, it was difficult but it also just shed a light on how everyone has different needs. From my experience, anti-diet dieticians just want their prospective clients to get out of the guilt and shame around food which many people, whether they've experienced disordered eating or not, have probably experienced. When your head is not clouded by this self-judgement it's easier to actually find things that work for you.

I have maintained this until now and I have to say that in the last 2 years my lifr has been miserable. I was maintaining around 2500-3000cals a day yet I was constantly starving and exhausted. I was eating a lot of protein, mostly whole foods and sleeping well, thos it really didn't help. I had initially lost the weight slowly over 6months or so but things never got easier. In the last month I got a breaking point I have been eating like crap, I'm probably back to 25% bodyfat or so, but I am mentally cheked out on dieting. I tried different strategies like Intermitting fasting and carnivore but they don't help. I feel like it's a loose-loose situation. Either I keep forcing myself to diet and live a miserable life or I give up on it and hate the way I look.
I tried to find a "balance" but honestly that was even worse, I tried eating around 3500-4000cals a day but that way I'm still pretty hungry troughout the and I don't even look lean, so I still have to put up with the hunger but I don't even get the satisfaction of looking good.
Don't really know what to do now because I feel like I'm at a dead end

A good one will keep your goals and daily routines in mind while planning with you. Exercise routine will likely play a role too. You didn’t mention what yours currently is or was and that plays a role too in how you feel / how many calories you can consume daily without gaining.

I honestly think that a lot of these specialty diets like keto, fruititatian, paleo, ect look at what they remove from the diet all if not most processed foods .... is it the specialty diet or processed food with added sugar, salt, preservatives ect that make them hyper palitable and inflammation. We started having more and more issues when the middle area of the grocery store ballooned, so I wonder if that with the availability of food is what has caused the obesity.
Changing the food you eat aka your diet will make differences. Just eating less doesn't work for everyone.

Not to discourage anyone, but sometimes the professionals you meet with 1:1 are pretty steeped in this sort of mentality too. I learned recently, after years of research and trial and error that pre-made meal plans work best for me personally, especially if someone else has calculated calories and macros for me. I don't want to know the numbers, just what i'm supposed to prep and eat. I tried to explain this to my new nutritionist, that what I needed from her was a new meal plan that fit my goals that used her nutrition expertise.
Instead I got 35 minutes of lecture about intuitive eating, even after I already had explained how my brain and stress habits were not capable yet of fully eating intuitively. It really felt like a "I'm right, you're wrong, I'm smart, you're dumb" moment from her.
Bruh. I am still so angry about that. Luckily for me, I had put in the work enough to know she was full of it. I worry for folks who don't understand themselves and how things work well enough yet to know when this is almost magical-thinking bullshit that could hurt them a lot.
To be clear, the ideal is intuitive eating, but not everyone is very close to being able to eat intuitively. THere is a ton to unravel in some folks before you can even start talking about intuitive eating, and there is no quick solution. All the techniques out there are tools in a tool box, and you just have to put in the work to figure out which one/s work best for you and your situation and when.

I don't like making fun of obese people or shaming anyone but I love the 80s culture. Yes, at a certain time, Brithny was too fat to look good dancing. She knew it herself. I don't like it when my BMI went up to 24. I didn't like how I moved, I didn't like that my thighs were too thick and the dancing movement didn't look good. Same as I wouldn't want to look like MTG although she is supposed to be a CrossFit trainer. I keep my BMI in the 19-20 range and I feel the best at this range. I assume, that, for guys, this range could be higher because they have more muscles and they don't need to look too slim.
But I am not sure about anti-diet. Definitely, we have to count calories. It doesn't mean we have to stop eating candies or cakes, but we need to know how many calories we can consume and how much protein, minerals, and vitamins should be in those calories. That most likely eliminates the cakes and most likely shifts the proportion between carbohydrates and protein in favor of protein. Again, it doesn't mean no cakes, maybe a small piece, and more veggies like broccoli. It should not be a diet it should be a lifestyle. You should train yourself to enjoy broccoli and hate cakes. It is possible. I did it :).

For those of us who are triggered to overeat, we have to get away from those foods for a good long while. Sort of like how a junky needs to quit using heroin. Letting a junky use just a little heroin is a recipe for disaster.

Anti-diet dietitians are directed to people battling with Ed's as an0r3xia or bul¡mi@, and people from the HAES movement.
As a person that suffered from eating disorders (both restrictive and binging) throughout the years, even in recovery, you do need some rules to regulate the way you eat in any of the extremes of the spectrum and even as a recovered person, is important to be mindful and aware of what you eat to make sure your body is nourished and also that you're not relying on food as comfort, not because food is good or bad, but because everyone needs a balance.
I used to find anti-diet dietitians reliable and as someone to look up to, but now I believe they're falling in unethical practices.

I def don’t agree with this movement. Weight-loss should be more about health goals and less about vanity. If health is on the top of a persons priority list, junk food should be at the bottom. Lost over 100 pounds myself. Knowing what you’re genetically predisposed to and basing a healthy diet around prevention is the best medicine in my opinion. Diets/lifestyles a very individualized for a good reason. That advice from this dietitian can be very harmful.
