    "We're not a cult."
"We'd rather you no longer exist than lose weight and be healthier."
"The outside world will never love and respect you like we do."
"If you leave and come back, we're going to punish you."
Cult is maybe a dramatic description, but also...............

This! The human body is incredibly adaptable and you can be a ‘high functioning obese’ person for a long time. But like an abstinent alcoholic who suddenly experiences the sights/tastes/smells of life through sober eyes, when you lose weight you realise how dreadful life was. How you became a martyr to discomfort. How you needed something to grab on to to get up off the floor. How your feet swell and hurt after a long day. How you developed sores and rashes through sweating in the summer. How your acid reflux woke you up in the middle of the night. How you risked a blood clot every time you take a long flight. How you tell your friends you’re happy chillin’ by the lake while they go off on a magical hike to see a glacier in the mountains. Losing the weight is life changing.

So, people losing weight is something that she resents. She totally resents it. She calls it a power trip because she feels powerless over her own weight. A lot of us struggle, but there is zero reason to be hostile toward someone who is able to lose it and keep it off. Why the hell does she care if someone weighs themselves daily and counts their calories? She wants to eat how she wants without judgement but yet she's all too willing to judge someone else.

In fact, tracking calories helps me to keep myself on track, as we usually are not good estimating how much food we are consuming. Then late 40's the blood pressure starts to go up, blood sugar keeps inching higher, cholesterol above normal, out of breath walking across a parking lot. I needed to lose weight or look forward to dealing with a bunch of disease, brought on by carrying excess weight. I lost 100+ lbs. It does matter. All those health markers are in the normal range. When I was younger and dealing with a binge/restrict eating disorder, I found the body positive/fat acceptance community really helpful.
Then as I began to recover, I started feeling less comfortable in those spaces. It felt like many of those people were still obsessed with their body, but in a different way. I think loving your body where it’s at is really important and I don’t see anything wrong with it. But for someone like me who was struggling with body image and obsessing over it, it was still putting focus on my body and wasn’t helping me.
What finally pushed me out of those spaces was seeing a content creator who I had been following for years really fluctuate with the her wait extremely. She was very open about her mental health struggles and I feel for her, but I realized she was still in a disordered eating mindframe, just fluctuating between both ends of the spectrum. I hope she found peace but I didn’t want to take advice from someone in the middle of an intense struggle.

I actually remember when I was morbidly obese, I had a similar delusion about "thin" people. I sadly assumed life was easier, if you were a smaller size. I realize with age and having lost the weight, that this was delusional thinking. I understand now, that a large percentage of people, look at those who don't have the same struggles they do, and automatically assume that those people have an easier, better life. For example, if money is a constant struggle, those people may believe that those who have money have an easy life. This is, of course, not true. In reality everyone has their own struggles. Overcoming a struggle doesn't automatically absolve you of having struggles. Basically, grass is always greener on the other side. I keep reminding myself, that while their grass may be greener to me, my grass may seem greener to them.

There is no "thin privilege", they suffer the negative consequence of the lifestyle they choose, i.e. their own actions. Whining every day about not fitting into chairs, worry about whether they fit by the table when friends invite you to dinner, being angry about not finding nice clothes is surely more devastating to health by the constant stresshormone release than the habitual mindful reflection about what you eat.

As a danish person, I NEVER grew up in a "I belong in this group and you are over there, so we don't like each other" with body types or color or anything like that. Everything in america seems to be like this. "the fat community" what does that even mean? So overweight people feels a sense of community over being overweight and therefor accepted?
You can be a shitty person no matter your weight? no matter your color? your income? It's unhealthy to label label label in this way. When e we are concerned about fat people it is because we love our friend, husband, daughter and we actually want them to live for a long time. Soooo a cult is a place the does it's best to tie positive feelings to the group, hoping to indoctrinate someone via those good feelings being given when they obey, and bad feelings given if they go against the group belief. If a person is overweight and wishes to join a group, but then wants to leave due to health reasons and needing to lose weight only to be shamed about it then that would be the cult. If a person gains weight after losing it and is shamed by those who inspired them to do it that would also fall into the same context. My feelings are that weight is a personal journey that you can invite people to join, or request people not depending on your needs/wants. It seems also that most people who are overweight feel the same way about weight loss that many people feel when we find out someone is vegan. It is almost like we feel judged by the circumstance if we aren't doing exactly what they are (personal opinion) so people lash out to try and justify not doing the same thing as someone else. Even if the other person isn't doing anything judgmental, people can feel judged via their own mental image being challenged about their place in the world. Least that is my theory on it.
