Extremely helpful. Have a couple of clients in mind that I have been wanting to do this with and I was able to pull some good nuggets out of this. Thanks!
I went over to your website and watch the adventure film academy video.....man wow just wow. You tell great stories man. The energy is jumping out of this video to me.... That video was warming to the soul of a creator man. Keep getting out and making stuff. Thank you. Life is better when you make stuff!
could you do a video on lighting a product for review on a white gloss table and a rgb light behind it and just a top light to get some epic shotS? i have a g7 with a sigma f1.8 metabones speedbooster and i cant get it to look the way im wanting it to look.... thanks
Kino Flo with diffusion taped on is a bad choice for the key light because of the amount of spill. You don't need to place the key light so far overhead like that if you just use a soft box that has an "egg crate" to control the light spill. You can then also achieve this effect in a smaller studio space.
This is perfect for what I was trying to do. I loved that you included the part about how to use it in a small area like a basement. I'm setting up my rig now and will definitely be using your advice! Thanks!
What an awesome video!! I’m considering relocating my RUclips Studio into my basement and this just added to my reasons why! Thanks buddy. Keep up the great work!!
This is great! Going to test it out in the end of January. How do you tweak it if there are two people in the interview rathe than one? Add another light above to get an even fill for both subjects?
EXACTLY the kind of info I was looking for - thanks for sharing your expertise!! Just curious as to your thoughts about adding a 2nd club chair & setting in an "A" or "V" pattern to shoot a 2-subject interview style piece?
Hi guys, was there noise in the black areas? Was it de-noised in post? I was shooting on an A7iii with iso 800 and I could see some noise in the shadows. Thanks for the video!
Hello friend!!! thanks for the great video, i have a question: How do you deal with noisy shadows when trying to achieve this look, besides keeping your iso down? dDo you crush the blacks in post? or just expose for the high lights/mid tones?
+Dale Roossien - yeah keep iso down is the biggest thing. I do crush the blacks later, and do a mask for dropping the exposure of the shadows as well. I had a few reflections I missed in the shot that I needed to mask out.
How did you hang the light above the subject? How can you do this if you are not able to attach it to the ceiling? What stands and arms etc would you recommend? Thank you!!!
I just clamped it to a pipe. You can get a c stand with an arm and several sand bags. there is also larger stands but I can't remember what they are called
How would you get this seemless black background within a 10'x10' room with 2 neewer LED 176 lights? I'm struggling to find the right kind of diffuser. Can I just use cardboard around the lights? or cardboard painted black?
This was extremely helpful!! I have a creative shoot coming up and I wanted this style of lighting. I’ll try to come back and post it here so you can see how it came out :)
this looks really crunchy, I'd use a softer source and ND's instead of dialing back the ISO so you do not loose the dynamic range. The shadows in his face and the highlights look very harsh, maybe that came into play there. Just a thought.
Hey dude. I love your work. I like your videos.. I stumbled on your channel because you use FCPX now. I was thinking about switching to Premiere but thanks to your video, I am staying with FCPX but like you said, for the cinema things and other projects, yes I will use Premiere.. Thanks man.
might be a combination of both actually. I can't see this on the file on my computer, but i can see it on youtube. that is the area that I did mask and darken slightly. The odd part is, I didn't really drop the blacks or shadows, I only removed highlights, so it's weird to see the line to pronounced.
Thank you again for great video, I'm not 100% which project you where doing and it looks like it is in church and really hope it some something helping them. It would be great to have cinematographer like you helping in this direction.
I’m trying to pull this off in a lot smaller place. I have it working pretty well but now with the lights, a piano, and a couple people it’s ridiculously cramped.
This is helpful for my current production.
You just save me from big issue I'm trying to solve for a shoot I'm coming to do next week. I love you bro.
The animations were very helpful with the explanation of the setup. Thanks for this!
Yeah, good to see the video still rolling and the explanation/title with it.
Excellent music choice by the way. Really cool.
Holy. This is some next level.
Equal parts documentary, tutorial, blog.
GOALS af.
Really happy you enjoyed it. I edited this on my vacation and had tons of fun.
Thank you… hopefully this can help me out by making my projecter look better when I do my interviews in front of it
So good, I've always wondered how these were shot!
Extremely helpful. Have a couple of clients in mind that I have been wanting to do this with and I was able to pull some good nuggets out of this. Thanks!
Woohoo, awesome. You're gonna crush it.

This is the exact look I had in my mind for a series I am conceptualizing! Totally stealing it :P
Totally logical. Looks great

Tks so so much man, most appealing lighting set up I've seen to date

I think you just saved my job with this tutorial dude. Thank you.
Thanks from the bottom of my heart

Nice to see you back.
+Kristian , thanks man
This was very helpful, loved the end results, going to give it a try with a softbox boomed with a grid
Going back to watch your earlier vids and this is gold. Thx
That looks very cool. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for sharing your experience(s). Absolutely love your videos and your laidback style...
You’re so bright spirited I love it so much
Super helpful!
I'm shooting some macro video of food, so I'll definitely be using some of this set up.
thank youuu dude the picto diagrams were great
love this look. Thanks for sharing how to do it.
Cool setup.
Love this look. How did you keep your footage together? Did you timecode or did you just keep all cameras rolling?
+Adam Rickman - just rolled one long clip for each camera and had him clap at the beginning.
Leftcoast Got it. Yeah I was wondering if you were stopping your roaming footage and starting. I'm sure that would have made it difficult.
Thanks for these tutorials, it's great to have online resources
Looks really good, but how do you mic for this?
This is just great, what a great class! Im seriously impressed, the best lighting tutorial I've ever seen by far!
Great video and thanks for taking me along and teaching me a ton.
Nice work. It would have been nice to detail how you boomed or suspended that kino from above.
Fantastic, I learned allot more than expected. I will be doing stills. Thanks! Mahalo from Maui
This is great! Going to test it out in the end of January. How do you tweak it if there are two people in the interview rathe than one? Add another light above to get an even fill for both subjects?
Hi there! Excellent video, excellent channel. I'd like to know the music in the video, please!
EXACTLY the kind of info I was looking for - thanks for sharing your expertise!! Just curious as to your thoughts about adding a 2nd club chair & setting in an "A" or "V" pattern to shoot a 2-subject interview style piece?
I don't know how to say thanks to you, because it wasn't even enough how thankfully I am because of this video.
Hi guys, was there noise in the black areas? Was it de-noised in post? I was shooting on an A7iii with iso 800 and I could see some noise in the shadows. Thanks for the video!
Good stuff I’ll be applying this technique this weekend for a testimony video. Subbed!!!
Dude this is great! I'm going to try to do this, but in a much smaller space.
Hello friend!!! thanks for the great video, i have a question: How do you deal with noisy shadows when trying to achieve this look, besides keeping your iso down? dDo you crush the blacks in post? or just expose for the high lights/mid tones?

Leftcoast thanks for the quick response, I never would have though to mask and feather.
Love your vids and your passion man, keep it up!
I love this! It shows exactly how to do this cool shot, which can be accomplished really easily and effectively. Thank you!
This is going to come in handy for a project I have tomorrow. Thanks a lot Levi. Come to Barbados soon bro.
Thorough and super useful - thanks!
What clap were you using? Thanks for your time!
This is such a huge help
Brilliant friend 👍🏻
Wonderful, Levi. Thank you.
Thankyou sir ❤️for this information
Super creative, love learning stuff like this,.
Awesome video! I wanted to shoot some testimonies for my church so this is so helpful
WOW! Thank you for this incredible video.
Yeah, excellent tips, thanks for bringing us along!
Amazing tutorial
How did you .. ahm like how did you hang the light from the ceiling? Ducktape?
How would you get this seemless black background within a 10'x10' room with 2 neewer LED 176 lights?
I'm struggling to find the right kind of diffuser.
Can I just use cardboard around the lights? or cardboard painted black?
Awesome video!
This was exactly what I was looking for! Subbed!
How did you do the white drawing and letters over the video? Thanks
Love how you presented this, got me subbed! What did you use for your writing graphics on screen, looks dope!!
@William Shakespeare 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wouldn't a fresnel attachment/light be more effective instead of the top down view which would take some grip time?
I learnt a lottt. Thank you.
That's a great looking frugal magliner you got there! Where did you get it? :)
You are a legend
Thanks. Great video
This was extremely helpful!! I have a creative shoot coming up and I wanted this style of lighting. I’ll try to come back and post it here so you can see how it came out :)
Very helpful.
Great tutorial, thanks
Thanks a lot🙏🏾 very creative

Great instructions and a nice inspiration for lighting setup! I really liked it, Levi!
superb video! very simple!
Great job man thanks.

That's definitely the look he was going for. Look up "I am second" videos.
EXACTLY what I was looking for. You’ve attained a new subscriber!

Excelente video, muy educativo.
You're videos are so dope Levi. Absolutely love your style and hope the best for you with your filmmaking. Also thanks for the pro tips!
One of the best channel wow! I wish I found you sooner!!
At 0:47 it looks like we can see the mask line where your shot goes from Organically very dark to pure black, or maybe it's RUclips compression?
might be a combination of both actually. I can't see this on the file on my computer, but i can see it on youtube. that is the area that I did mask and darken slightly. The odd part is, I didn't really drop the blacks or shadows, I only removed highlights, so it's weird to see the line to pronounced.
Anyways, awesome video production!
So helpful! Thank you!
Really amazing!! Keep Going!
Fantastic tips. I definitely learned some new things!
Suer, mantap banget bang...
Keren lah bang
Thank you again for great video, I'm not 100% which project you where doing and it looks like it is in church and really hope it some something helping them. It would be great to have cinematographer like you helping in this direction.
Great job!
would love to see you remake this with the cheap amazon lights.
Do you have a link to the finished piece? TY!
Love this, thank you for creating this video.
Great video!!!!!!
Hi Levi,
I use a Canon XF705 and can't dial in an iso, how do I work around this to achieve a similar result as you?
Thank you, that was soo educational
I’m trying to pull this off in a lot smaller place. I have it working pretty well but now with the lights, a piano, and a couple people it’s ridiculously cramped.
Good video. Love this kind of practical BTS. Can learn a lot
You need to try the Eos R. Its amazingly easy to match to canon C100 and C200
