Nice explainer mate and well done putting together that shot in a crappy room. Question for you though mate, the A-shot vs the B-shot seem to have two different tints. (At least to my eye). Are you shooting the same camera or is it because the lighting situation is dramatically different from one vantage point to the other? Or am I not seeing it right?
I watched other videos of this channel about gear and I thought "nice"... I watched this one and hit the subscribe button. That's the content that help us to work and improve. So many thanks!
Nice look! I definitely think there is too much green in the B-shot though (5:50 for example). Especially in the skin tones. That makes it feel too gloomy. But overall really helpful tutorial and I admire your creativity with the ceiling especially!
I love doing interviews and other types of cinema & filmography. A portion of what we do is problem solving. We're trying to recreate as much of our vision that we possibly can with what we have.
Alex - Can you hear me now? Thank you for this video! I have done corporate videos and commercials in the past and I certainly do know the challenges of overcoming that "office look". I often ask the media team if they have any favorite "well lit" spots, and normally ends up either in the board room or in their own offices. I do like your choice of how you lit the subject in this video with only three lights, and adding those pictures to break up the background and provide the "right vibe" for those wide and tight shots. Great tips!
i just do simple realtor videos - probably will never do anything of this quality, but i loved watching and feel like I learned something that I might try one day.
Have ran in to this problem numerous times. My go to with a blank wall has been to use a cookie pattern. Sometimes throwing on an amber or blue gel if necessary. It can also help separate the subject if you don’t have an extra light or room for hair light.
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW! This video reminds me of a project I did a couple of months back, I was in a dark room that had a semi-interesting background in relation to how I positioned my interviewee. I took my Godox V1 speed light, turned on the model lamp (which is warm) and pointed it upward, where it lit up a mosquito net, that softly deflected light into the background. It made for an awesome warm and dramatic shot. The day I can afford the big Aputure lights, I'll also definitely shift ceiling tiles around 😅. That was some great improv btw 👏🏾
Jhooo❤❤❤ I love you bruh, you are my teacher and I learn so much. You helped me make my Podcast setting so professionally even though I am using my phone but I learned that lighting is everything. I cant go a day without watching you

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW Great breakdown and I love the creativity here with using the frame of the door to give it more of an edge (pun intended) and taking down the ceiling panel lol! You gotta do what you gotta do and this is what makes you a better filmmaker. Keep it up man 🤌🏼
Can you hear me now - only recently discovered your channel and I’m loving it 🔥 definitely starting to think about maybe doing a little doc work, even if it’s just spec work.
Thanks brother and you definitely should. It’s an aspect of filmmaking that is great for learning the Art of storytelling without it being as complicated as shooting a feature film. I believe it’s a great starting point for Filmmaker ‘s, and a great place to grow into making narrative features.
Great video. Love how you break down the lighting setup. I was surprised that the lens was positioned lower than the eyes/nose area and pointing slightly upward towards the subject. It still looked great but it just caught me off guard at first.
Hey Mark, thanks I’m glad you liked the video. My goal recently has been to experiment a little with my second camera angle and find an interesting look that feels a bit more experimental. Sometimes it works and other times it really doesn’t but oddly enough I felt like this really worked.
This is why I’ve been leaving the 300Ds at home and taking the F22 panels. They take up a lot less room when packing and don’t have the depth of those parabolics. It can literally be flush against the ceiling. If you’re using diffusion in front of a para you don’t need a para. Mostly I save the domes for when I really need them and maybe just use an inner baffle.
Great video as always! This is what filmmakers do right? They overcome problems and make people look good on camera, even when the environment isn’t quite set for that. This video will help me out on monday. Thanks a lot Can you hear me now
I love the B cam! But I have to say - I don't like the A cam - the frame behind his head is distracting me and the whole shot has a lot of uneasiness. Can you hear me now?
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW Great bro! I absolutely love your videos, you should have much more subscribers than you have now, because your videos are super clean and nice ;)
Can you hear me now. This is the reason why I always tell clients to get the biggest possible room for the interviews. You just need some depth and room for your lights. But sometimes the client just doesn't have the space
I absolutely love this break down, but I can't help but notice how much headspace you leave above. An entire 1/4th of the composition is left above the head blank. Not trying to find little things about the video but I also noticed it on the interview shots which can be classified as a medium tier composition error.
i shoot video in japan, this is happening 99% of the time (and there is tv or white board instead of the paintings). with giant table in middle of the room, we can't move (because connected to all sort of cables).
I was in a situation like this last week. Client rented a studio room 3 flights upstairs in a building with no elevator. That was the 1st sign of a WTF moment as I had to haul all my gear up 3 very long flights of stairs. Then to get to the 10 x 10 room. With not much decoration inside. The ceilings were super low (not drop ceiling) so I didn’t have your option. Oh course the client was wearing glasses and didn’t want to take them off as it wasn’t “his look” so I wasn’t able to get the key light up high enough to avoid major reflections of the softbox showing on his glasses. Do you think I would have been better off bouncing the bare Apature light off the ceiling in that case to avoid reflection in glasses? It really annoyed me I couldn’t avoid that. But yeah it was one of those days 🤣
Can You Hear Me Now?? im thinking about ffillming a doc styled video and the lighting conditions are really bad, so these techniques will be really helpful, thanks.
I noticed that too, I gave this to an editor and I think he got the adjustment layers mixed up. If you notice the Thumbnail is different as well. That’s because I colored the thumbnail and he colored the video. Because it wasn’t a video on color grading I didn’t think it mattered but apparently someone noticed lol 😂
