I was the Art Director for the first season of Stranger Things. You guys nailed this. The one thing you are missing is that it was freezing cold on stage the day we shot this and Millie was a real trooper splashing around in the cold water. SFX tried to heat it, but it was too shallow to retain any heat.

I immediately from the opening shot recognized the reference to Under the Skin. And the lady does look almost as beautiful as Scarlet Johansson. I adore this horror/sci-fi movie. It’s worth the watch.
And a didn’t Millie wear a wetsuit underneath her wardrobe?. That really retains the body heat.

@@InCameraTV On a slightly less gushing note, I must say that besides the fascinating subject matter, the fact that the episodes are extremely well shot and edited is amazing, and surprisingly easily overlooked (which I guess is a testament to the quality, that it renders itself invisible). And as a bonus - for me - all the rigging shots bring back memories of the summer I worked on building theater sets for an amateur theater festival (in Västerås, Sweden), climbing around on ladders, hanging lights and things like that. Also, not having seen Under the Skin, it took a good while before I realized the intro was tampered with. :)

A tip from a VFX artist: instead of crushing your blacks to get rid of all unwanted detail, try shooting a clean plate of the empty set, then subtract this from your footage to create a perfectly black background. Might require some rough roto to hold out the actor, but should get you a much better starting point for further grading

We keep the cables from the floor…
Back in 2009 I was the special effects and prop maker for this TV show the next Uri Geller. And I Just consulted a talent and I walked back to my workshop offstage and walked down the little dark steps and slipped. I fell backwards with my back landing on the steps and my head hitting the main stage. Knocking the wind out of me. So the sound guy called in and the room lights go on. And we saw that the hazer on my side of the stage had sprung a leak. And there was easily like 10 liters of water. And the water was only about 1.5 meters away from a couple of 380V distribution boxes that laid back stage.
So the crew came in with towels and mobs to clean up the water. And the rehearsal for the live show airing 4 hours later was done with the room lights on. Much to the producer and director’s frustration. Water on a black floor is truly invisible.

It really depends how you want it to look. You could achieve something similar outside, either with the surface available or one you create, but it would have to be pretty big to stretch into the darkness.

It's heavy duty blackout drape, or theatre drape. Then the thinner stuff hung from the kino's is called Bolton in the UK.

One thing you could have tried would be using a polarizer to adjust the reflectivity of the water and the liner. It might be tricky because the surface of the water is refracting the reflections on the liner which I *think* puts them on weird planes from each other. But a polarizer would probably knock the reflections down on both. It also helps that you're shooting at a 90-degree angle to the surface of the water. This was a great tutorial! Can't wait to see what's next from you all.

That's the great thing, there's so many ways certain effects can be achieved! And like Tom says in the video, he would've done a few things differently if we had more budget or if we were to do it again! Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video!

Would a small mirror put under the lens do the trick for a cheapo setup?

  • @MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio

My guess would have been that they tracked the subjects with spotlights as they moved in Stranger Things. Technically, they only had a chair and Elle to track, so it might have been easy to do.

A setup like this (minus the water) would work great for Pepper's Ghost or a "hologram-like" projection from the Star Wars universe! Are there any particular fabrics you would recommend for creating a dark void?

    • @InCameraTV

Velour and velvet are blackest! But if you keep the light off it any Matt black fabric should do it 👍
