    Hi, obnoxious history student here. Just wanted to say that this looks absolutely exceptional the only alteration I would suggest is that since Dresden was targeted because of it’s railway network it would make sense if the fires were more concentrated around the railways and their stations.
    Again though, absolutely beautiful work I’m definitely subscribing after this.

    • @InCameraTV
      @InCameraTV  3 года назад +40

      You're spot on; unfortunately this city scape is actually of Cologne, not Dresden, as we couldn't find a high enough resolution image of Dresden for this scale. We tried to replicate the best we could the patterns of the targets though in terms of areas with large buildings etc.

      I respectuflly disagree, you can do this very well in cg but it would be extremely time consuming. However this method not only is wayyyy less time consuming but also has the added benift of being accessible and anyone can do it! :)

      Very True but you also have to take into account render times, volumetric smoke would take extremely long to render even on fast computer, but yes if you were smart about it you could just used composition to add the smoke after you rendered the scene

    Citizen Kane used this effect back in the 40s. Since they couldn't afford hundreds of extras they had a photo of a crowd, cut around their heads and moved lights around them to make it look like the heads were moving. WOW! I have had an interest in the bombing of Dresden ever since I read _Slaughterhouse-Five_ as a kid. I actually deep-dived and learned everything I could about it. There was a time I could have told you exactly how much of each kind of ordnance was dropped from each wave throughout that night, what the ambient temperature was, how many Lancs were in each squadron, etc. I mean it. I was obsessed. I even outlined a script about it that would follow a German family throughout the night as they tried to avoid getting killed.

    Thank you guys. Love this project as it involves one of my passion, the history of Bomber Command in WWII
    However can I comment on some elements. Love how you built the ground plane with spot fires and bigger conflagrations. I agree about the searchlights, but having one sweep across the lens would be an opportunity of a massive spike in contrast. What I think is lacking is the random but quite frequent flashes of ‘cookies’ exploding on the ground. Looking at original footage of raids, which I am sure you have also viewed, these cookie flashes have a characteristic
    pulse of bright yellow light then fades over a second or so through orange. You might think this is too literal, but I think it is an integral part of the true visual effect. Also flak bursts possibly represented by very short ambient flashes, and would be backed up with sound. This flak would also leave traces at or around the aircraft levels, so giving the opportunity of having some stationary traces of smoke moving under the viewer.
    My biggest problem with your ‘final’ run is the relation of ground to aircraft. I presume you panned the camera over the ground to give the impression of movement. Is the viewpoint from a Lancaster or a much slower moving craft. Why then are the Lancasters going so much quicker. And the density of aircraft is completely unrealistic. No form of ‘formation’ could be flown at night, and often the aircraft might be flying on slightly differing headings. And differing heights. I am sure you are aware of target indicator flares visible cascading from a set height to the ground, but I think this would be unreasonable to comment about.
    Fantastic piece. Thank you so much for showing your thinking and the technical side, and an insight into the levels you build and and your post production.
