Excellent work on this video Jon. You've spent a lot of time for your viewers, and I appreciate it. Thanks!
thank you. glad you are enjoying!
Big thanks for this well-produced video test. As I write, it's April 2022, and sourcing 12-speed Dura Ace or Ultegra components is a whack-a-mole situation from multiple vendors. That said, I have a 3-month old 9100 dual meter crankset that I want to include in a 9200 build. Thanks to you, I realize that, unlike what multiple suppliers have told me, it's not going to be an issue. Thanks again.
thanks for the comment! appreciate it
@Sam Lowe were you successful in using 9100 crankset with 12 speed di2? Thank you.
Actually, I decided to stay with 11-speed. Financially it made more sense for me to go all DA 9170 all-around. I wish you good success with your decision.
@@pneumadeux thanks, Sam.
this'll probably eventiually be the highest number of views for any video you'll ever get. answering the question so many want to know! enjoying your channel!
thanks so much!!
Early this Euro racing season there were a number of pro teams using 11-sp cranks with 12 sp DA, I heard due to supply problems. I figured they knew what they were doing. Nice to see it explained so well.
that was because powermeters on 12s shimano cranks was not accurate
From Italy, you are an amazing discovery for a cyclist like me. Very nice videos!
thanks bro!!
ye just watched the comparison 📹 of 9100/9200/ chain rings against each other and ye spot on when manufacturers bring out a brand new system they obviously want you to buy in to the whole Idea you need anything matching for you to get the best functionality I remember clearly when 10-speed went to 11 speed but I just carried on using my 10-speed chain for quite a while with 11-speed ring's chainset like you they work just fine. and again your channel is so much better than GCN 🤙
thanks so much bro
Hi John , I like how you explain things , very easy to understand and you say it how it is , watching you from Australia .
thank you so much bro
This is awesome, Jon! Thanks for the terrific and experimental efforts. I have been researching all over the internet of whether I can use the regular 50-34t chainrings with my coming R9270 with no avail. Until I see this video. Great job & respect!
thanks for tuning in!
Awesome dude, you answered something nobody else has
thanks!!
Thanks John, I am also upgrading soon and want to keep my current cranks. This was a great help thanks.
no problem! glad you enjoyed the video
Helped me to decide, cause I need my 54 9100 chainring with the 9200 drivetrain. Excellent video.
thank you!!
Youre a beast, thanks for all you do!
thank you, glad you are enjoying the content
One year on and this is music to my ears👍🏻 My dilemma is with my brand new 2023 Bianchi Oltre Comp: I am thinking of replacing my Shimano 8100 50t 12sp outer ring with a Specialites TA 52t 11sp as Specialites TA only list it as a 11sp. I wanna get the bits ready for when the bike arrives. Thank you so much for this, it kind of does say YES it'll work, but hopefully Specialites TA will get back to me before New year
These videos are so full of information! Thank you!
thanks, glad you are enjoying!
Excellent. From a retired Shimano spanner man.
The new chainset looks 👌
thank you
Jon - unrelated to this video other than you rode in it but would love to see a video on cold weather gear for temps in the 40’s F (5-10C)
I am going to do this very soon
Follow up video: "Will the 9200 crankset break?"
It is beautiful as all heck. I hope they're stronger.
LOL, good question
Amazing content and dedication, keep it on , bro!
thanks bro!!
Thank you for the information and the good videos all the time!👍🏻
thanks for tuning in!
In addition to testing wireless interference, can you also test chain dropping? I want to know how reliable no chain catcher or limit screws really is. So put it in the suboptimal rear cog and then, pedaling under load, shift the front and see if it drops.
Also, thanks so much for doing this! I look forward to them every day!
Thx bro, I will do something for sure!
This is the bike nerd shit that fuels me. Inject more of this straight into my veins pls
LOL!!
A quick search, found your video, new subscriber! Thanks!
thanks for tuning in!! all the best
since shimano 11sp chains are sold out everywhere, you can use 12 sp chains if youre running 11sp cassette (but not the other way around)
thanks
Josh at Silca had some pre-waxed 12spd in stock recently and some diamond slurry polished ones for race day too.
I'm so glad I stocked up on 12spd XTR chains before 9200 was released. :)
Awesome video thank you 🙏
thanks for tuning in!
It’s tough enough to swallow having to spend 100 or 200 bucks on a new stem with every new bike purchase, but with many bikes coming with a power meter, now having to swallow swapping out a brand new super expensive power meter for one that actually fits is quite painful. Feeling much more confident about my future purchase knowing that I’ll at least be able to use my 9100 crank which is the correct length. Thanks!!
thanks for the comment!!
Keep up the good work, thanks a lot. The stock of 9100 is always low, so it's good to know we can upgrade the crank with the 9200 series.
Awesome video I got issues, I just bought Dura-ace 9200 group set but the crank 170 mm. I using 165 mm crank currently they don’t have 165 arm crank, so after watching your video that means the 9100 crank can used for Dura ace 9200 chains. Super super review this Chanel.
thank you
Thanks for that great video! You answered the question that caused me some sleepless 😅
Thanks for the good work. Appreciate it.
That’s the shifting I get when I’m dreaming. Wow!!
Lol!!
Huge thanks...had that very question as I want to purchase a new crank!
glad you enjoyed the vid!
I can't fit 6800 /9000 /9100 chainrings (bigger cogs like 50+ T) on 9200 crank arm as it has 2 rounded screw mounting points (instead of 1 as in 9100 or 0 in 9000) if You have flat chainrings You can use a metal file to remove excess aluminium in those points and try to install it. I mean installin chainrings from 9100 and older on crank arm 9200 or FC09 /08.
Next video: Jon gets sued by Shimano
Lol
front trim adjustment is dope.
👍🏻
thank you
This helped me a lot.. let’s go for the 8170 ultegra… 👍🏻 my powermeter is still compatible 😁
yes!!!
Front shifting is not going to be an issue once I get the Classified Shift Hub System. Shouldn't be to much longer.
Nice, safe riding!
Excellent as always Jon! When are you getting the "MILLE GTO WINTER BIB TIGHTS C2" ?? 😆😎
LOL, I want them, but $700 is crazy and will be in Tucson soon and wont need them.
Nice Video Jon! What would also be interesting: do the 9100 brake levers work with the 9200 rear derailleur? that would be a very inexpensive way to upgrade to 12speed.
I am pretty sure it wont work
maybe with the sd50 to sd300 cable adapter. I would have to try but I think so
@@peioromera859 I think it might work with the EW-AD305 as that is how a Tri bike is setup due to no "NEW" levers
Does anyone know if the 9100 chainrings bolt to the 9200 cranks?
I want to put together a bike Mechanical Ultegra R8000 11-speed. My question is about the callback. An original Dura Ace crank R9200 12-speed fits this group.
So does that mean a 9200 crankset would work with the remaining 9100 groupset?
Yes!
Thanks for the confirmation!
Thanks very informative I would like to use the the 12 speed 9200 crankset on my 11 speed 9100 groupset . Can I ? Unfortunately here in my area bike mechanics won’t tell you, ye or no.
Like you said though, I don’t think it worth to upgrade my current gen 11spd Ultegra di2, but I’d like to change my tt bike from mechanical to 12spd di2. Makes it a much more viable option
yes agree
Have you done a walk through, review of some of your tools?
great idea. I will do this for sure
Thank you so much 😊
thanks for tuning in
Is the Quarq DFour DUB spider works with DuraAce 9200 chainrings? Thanks in advance for answering
No sorry, this wont work
sir that crankset big ring the dura ace 9200, have a 3x crankset
Nice
Can u use 9100 chainrings on 9200 crankset?
thank you for the info...most likely same with ultegra 8000 to 8100 compatibility
np!
The new r9200 quite heavy compared to r9100 groupset, no wonder Sagan still used the r9100 🤣
Lol
Hey Jon, great video. Question for you: why not put the Quarq on the 9200 chainrings? I am guessing it won’t look too great given the different aesthetics but it seems like it should fit given that 9100 cranks will work on the 9200 chainrings…
Thanks man!! I don’t really care about looks, it wont fit is the problem.
Thanks!
but also the width of the chain would be intresting to know, between 11s and 12s. ( inner and the outer widht)
Great point. Thx
Great Job... Thanks.
thanks for tuning in!
That means 9100 chain rings can used for 9200 groups set no issues
Yes!
Suggestions for a power meter with the new dura ace group set ? I wanted to get dual sided rotor power meter, any videos reviewing that manufacture?
Love the videos
I'm going to wait for new quarq that will take the 9200 rings
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 any idea when that will happen? SRAM said they can’t get their hands on a Shimano 9200 chainring to figure it out. I don’t want to lose my dfour but I guess the 9200 chainring won’t go on the current dfour!
@@jsosinski1 9100 chainrings will work
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 but how’s the setup process with 9200 stuff being 54/40 and I would be running 55/42. Will the system give you the other options when setting it up or is it strictly the 9200 options?
@@jsosinski1 Yes they have these options!
Can you tell me what kind of bike stand you have, give me the name, thank you
Thanks for sharing Jon...I am so relieved that both chainrings can be swapped between 11/12 speed set. May I assumed the slimmer 12 speed chain can be used for 11 speed group set too?
Ok so can we confirm that at torque and high cadence 9100 with new chainrings can handle a 9200 system? Were the World Tour drops 9100 53/39 due to pros using USED chainrings past their 10,000 kms (when drops start no matter the system?)
Hi Jon,
Thanks for your video! My English is not very good, so I'm asking this based on my understanding:
Can I use R9200 52/36 chainrings with an R9100 11/28 cassette and R9100 front and rear derailleurs with an 11-speed chain? Will it work? Does it need adjustment of the derailleur? If it doesn't work, what would I need to change to make it work?
I appreciate your help!
This is great!
Want to know if you (or anyone) have tried to put 12 speed XTR M9100 chain to Dura Ace 9100 system? Whether that 12sp chain in 11sp system work charming? I've read in some forums that it's much quieter but still question mark on the shifting quality.
Thank you!
I will give this a try
I ran 10spd chain on 7700/6600 sprockets 10 years ago. Been running 11spd chain since I upgraded to 10spd. Since XTR went 12spd I've used that on my 9000 and 9100 with less noise and better shifts.
When I assembled my own ebike with 8spd 11-40t I began with XX1 12speed chain as the 1x wide-narrow ring was ready and it too works well. It's never so much about the inside of the chain as the outside and the shape. Lekkie in NZ say that Shimano 12spd and Sram 12spd chains fit differently on various model rings. Remember to clean and wax all your chains, I have 2 for each set-up so I halve the frequency of the money and watts saving inconvenience. Chains are the least expensive part but control most of the wear and tear.
Yes I can install XTR 12 so. chain on 9100 .
Works wonders, quiet.
There's a thread on Weight Weenies forum about that, find it and read. There are a few limitations
Excellent video thanks! Question, can you run a 39T 9100 chainring on the new 9200 Crankset? Idea being is I’d like to run a 54/39 rather than the stock 54/40
Yes, I think that will work!!
Thank you for the video
I'm curious about the scram red 22 crank
Can I use it?
9100 di2 SRAM RED22
I used a mix of cranks, but if the 9100 is available,
I'm curious if Sram Red 22 is possible
Yes I think you can use this crank
Have you ever had a chain drop when shifting front up with 92 front durallier and 91 front chainrings? I have heard, that 91 chainrings won't be properly working with 92 front durallier... I measured distance between small and large cog on 91 and 92 and it is equal.
How did you get a proper chainline with your quarq dforur and DA 9100 chainrings, how many spacers or shims did you have to use? In my case when I tune the front deraileur I can't trim it more inward cause the poor chainline it's get.
Jon an other great content congratulations from 🇦🇹🇦🇹what about waxing ?
thx so much! I am going to try waxing soon
So 11speed Dura Ace chain is compatible with 9200 crankset ?
No Chain is not compatible
Exactly the video I'm looking for... I have just purchased the Ultegra r8100 group. I wanted to keep my cannondale 10 arm OPI spidering currently on my 11 speed drive train... would I be correct to assume this comparison would carry over to my setup? I know it's not dura ace, but it's more the 11 speed chain ring, 12 speed chain thing I'm contemplating. Love your content! ! Well done. New subscriber!
Jon this is great mate. Been researching for this answer for ages. Top man. I seen you changed BB? Does that mean the BB are different for the 9100 and the 9200? I have the new speed concept coming and need to know if I can just mount the 9100 or if I need to install new BB?
Thx bro! No the BB is the same for 9100 and 9200 its different for the Quarq though. The quarq uses a DUB BB
Buenas tardes, Jon. Desde España. En primer lugar gracias por tus vídeos. Mi pregunta es si puedo usar bielas y platos dura ace 9100 con casette, cadena y cambio trasero y delantero dura ace 9200?
Muchas gracias
Good afternoon Jon. From Spain. First of all thanks for your videos. My question is if I can use dura ace 9100 cranks and chainrings with Dura Ace 9200 cassette, chain and rear and front derailleur? Thank you very much.
Jose, I have been running 7800 180mm arms and DA rings on 7700, 7800 and changed to 11spd Q-Rings on those same 7800 arms with both 9000 and 9100 very happily but I'm old school and still think triples can shift sweetly. I'm still running mechanical DA shifting though so can't say if Di2 might be more sensitive to any changes in the spacing of the rings. From how Jon show us the front set-up using the Di2 ap, it looks like it will learn what your chainring spacing is. Shimano know alot of folks are already financially committed to their existing powermeters, so it will need to work with other cranks still.
You can only use the cranks and chainrings, thanks man!
So I run a 54/42 on my current 9170 Crankset and just bought a new SL7 with the 9200 Groupset. My question is I would like to keep the 54 rings and with shimano not releasing the 54/40 yet would I be able to just swap these rings to the new crankset?
Yes, you can use these rings with the new 9200
Can we really use the 9100 chainrings with 9200 cranks? This video seem to suggest otherwise? ruclips.net/video/IYx3RR9rai4/видео.html
@@aidenhazard Can’t use the chainrings with the 9200 cranks, I meant you can only use the 9100 chainrings with the 9100 cranks
this video is not completely accurate i think: The 9200 crankset has exactly the same q-factor dimensions as the 9100 and so the front derailleur requires no adjustment. you say the 9100 and 9200 chainrings are compatible but i understand that the 9200 chainring will not fit a 9100 spider...you are swapping out entire cranksets. You also don't address the 12s chain which is compatible with at least 10s to 12s.
Let us know when a quarq power meter is available, I got my bike today with di2 dura and dura wheels. Where do u plug in the charging cable? Could you show in a future video how to calibrate and customize the gruppo w the app?
For sure, will do and I will do a video on this too
Is there any issues running a 12 speed chain with an 11 speed cassette? Does the 12 speed chain chew up the 11 speed cassette? All Shimano. I ask bc I'm considering upgrading my 11 speed crank set to a 12 speed DA
Why did you need to change the bottom bracket?
@jonmaloneycycling7593 apologies I know this is a 2 year old video, do you know if a R9200 crank would work on a 9100 Di2 system or is there a chain line issue?
can you tes it you can use the new deraiileurs with the old shifters? you do need an €20 adapter, the adapter is a Shimano EW-AD305 Di2 Conversion Adapter
They won't work
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 I called Shimano service center and they said it is possible with the new front and rear derailleur, new battery, new sd300 cables and 2 adapters for the shifters (the ew-ad305, so actually you can only keep the shifters)
@@cissepauwels8211 thanks, good to know!
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 Maybe as an allowance for the rims brake users who are getting left behind with no new ergonomics with 9200. Otherwise they'd sell none of the new 9200 stuff to them beyond the cranks.
I guess I'll be looking for somebody's good condition 9000 or 9100 cranks when my 5x 130mm bcd Q-Rings wear out, luck I have spares.
7800 on the training bike & 7900 on the newer one.
One day I get around to trailing the 7900 165 & 172.5 pairs on the bike & so definitively what works best.
Putting a 120mm pair on my ebikes coz they make peak power between 120 to 150rpm. Might be good spin practice.
What about Dura Ace 9000 chain rings with 9200? Or Absolute black on Quarq DFour V1 w 9200 di2?
Thanks for the video, Jon. Several people ask this question here - what is the teeth thickness difference between 9100 and 9200 cranks? I find the 9200 crank nicer than the 9100 and would like to use it with my 9100 group set. Thx.
I will make a video on this, thx bro!
Similar question, could I use the 9200 crankset with 9200 chainrings with the rest of the drive train being mechanical 8000?
@@toddteren519 Yes, this should work! But try it first of course
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 thanks, would you run a 12 spd chain with this setup or do 11 spd chain?

Hey John, are 9100 left crank arms compatible with the 9200 spindle? Wondering if older left arm power meter would work with new crank. Thanks 👍🏻
Spindle on all Shimano cranks is the same, you can mix and match all hollowtech cranks (even with MTB). I'm curently using left Ultegra 6800 crank with R8000 right side power meter.
@@romanpramuka2703 I know for existing hollowtech it’s true. However, Shimano calls this Hollowtech 2 now. I just would like him to try it since he has the parts and ability to confirm it and remove any doubt. I anticipate it should be compatible and you will be right 👍🏻
Yes. They are compatible!!
I have a Duracen crankset and on the back I have Ultraga is it ok or will I have a problem?
Hey Jon. How does the 9200 chainrings look aesthetically on the Quarq? That would be my go to power meter option
They wont fit on the current quarq

Great stuff Jon. Will 9200 chainrings work with 9100 groupset?
Yes it will, thank you!
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 Will the 9200 chainrings not fit onto the Quarq DFour 91/Dfour Dub Spider? I emailed Quarq this morning and they told me they have not been able to get their hands on 9200 rings yet to test fit themselves.
@@RK-ql8ue This what I was wondering. It all still 110bcd but will just the rings fit on the 9100 arms, that should answer the question, and also how that looks too.
bro, can you try shimano 12s group set with sram red axs chainring? Red chainring is beautiful.
Have you tried to see if the 9200 rings fit onto the DFour Dub spider?
I have heard rumors that they might. The aesthetic won't match but I'm wondering if they can physically fit on the spider.
Any chance you can check this? It would be very helpful to know.
Another bump. Do the rings fit?
My question too.
It doesn't fit correctly
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 Mechanically incorrect or aesthetically incorrect would be handy to know.
great video💪
thanks for this video!
did you happen to measure the distance between old and new chainrings? reason i ask is because i'd like to put quarq (with aftermarket chainrings, maybe "hollow" rotor, just like my old setup) on the new bike, which ofc has 12v, but many people keep telling me that "yes, it'd work but not so fine because of the gap between chainrings".
I have not measured it, but it’s the only option besides stages or pedals to use a power meter
Do 9100 chainrings fit on the 9200 crank? Do 9200 chainrings fit on the 9100 crank?
No they don’t fit
Hi Everyone, so , the difference is only aesthetics or I don´t know, maybe the Q factor is different??? Thanks in advance to all!!
can the Dura Ace 9100 chainrings work with the Shimano Ultegra Di2 FD R8150, 12-speed?? I need 180mm crankarm and only Dura Ace makes it.
Yes, this will work
Any issue using 12 Speed Ultegra R8100 groupset with 11 Speed R8000 chainring?
Thanks for the video. When you installed the 9200 and adjusted the hi and low through the app, were you bringing the derailleur outwards? Does this mean that the 9200 chainset has a slightly greater chain line?
I believe they are very similar. I head the 9200 is outward a few MM but I never noticed it
Thanks for the video! Interested to know the weight difference between the 9100 rings with quarq spider and cranks to the 9200 crank set?
I will weigh them when I get a chance
Put the 9200 chainring on your quarq
would i be right to assume i can run ultegra 11 speed crankset with 12 speed chain and rear mech/cassette?
Excellent video!
I just got my new bike with the Di2 9170 (ordered prior to the release of the 9200). What are your thoughts about changing out the 11 speed cassette and chain for the 12 speed? I'd love to have the extra gear and its seems that it would be the least expensive way to get it now.
That wont work, you would need the derailleur and shifters as well
@@jonmaloneycycling7593 Bummer :(
Would this be the same case for the new 12 speed Ultegra vs the 11 speed Ultegra?
So if I have a 9100 11 speed chainset and 12 speed rear cassette would I use an 11 speed chain or 12 speed? Thanks for any help😉😊
No, you have to use the 12 speed chain. 12 speed chain with 12 speed cassette
I guess for those of us with older bikes, mines a 2018 Giant Propel with Di2, the cost to upgrade to get the 9200 is well worth it then, just wondering at what point Shimano is going to switch to a one front ring system for road bikes?
Good question
As Rotor has 13spd, my guess is the others will all be forced to join them there in 1 or 10 product cycles once the market seems more certain. The number of sprockets is unlikely to stop growing until either the cost of entry/development/material or failures reach a short term limit to solve. Shimano has been burned before trying to lead the market, and the pros, remember they tried with AX before anyone thought aero mattered? Only then will Shimano consider 1x for road as an option but Microdive is ready and very well tested, just like XD was before XDR. You will still have to sacrifice the 'straight block' steps of old, but they soon dropped the 11-23t from R9100 and now the 180mm cranksarms from R9200 once the market stopped buying these.
Use Sheldon Brown's online gear calculator for yourself to see what it will take to have adequately close jumps and great enough over all range, including with his 'gain ratios' so you can work out gearing 160mm arms now.
Hi, so I could swap in a 9200 crank set in my R9150 group set keeping 11 speed in the back and running an 11 speed chain with no problems? There’s sufficient clearance between the two chainrings on 9200?
