Thanks for the info!! So I've tried a 12sp Shimano chain on my 11 sp SRAM eTap with Shimano DA9100 crankset and can confirm the issue of shifting on the front. Because of the narrower chain I had to move the high limit on the front derailleur out to help push the narrower chain up to the big ring otherwise it wouldn't shift. This caused a few drops while riding and made it annoying, not to mention some scratches on the crank arm. I will say, the rear shifting was crisp and much quieter with the 11sp chain. Having seen this, I will try to get the new 8100 chain rings on my 9100 crankset and get that narrower gap on the front because I really like the 12sp shifting on the back.
I’m upgrading to 12s and I’m having a really hard time finding 165mm cranks like I’m already used to on my TT. Thanks to your video I now know that I can keep my old cranks and mount new chainrings. It’s a pity though that Ultegra stops at 52… I’m pushing a 54 and that change would force me to run 52-11 that rally is non that optimal. Hope Shimano will release 54/40 as well
this was damn useful. i've been wandering (and asking) for weeks if i could put a quarq dzero with rotor noq chainrings with a the new ultegra 12v, and i finally got the answer. the "yes, but" is already something (that, for instance, customer services wouldn't give me). just need to realize what kind of difference those 2mm would really do.
Hey, this is quite helpful for sure. I have 2023 Ultegra 12 electronic shift on my new Bianchi and fancy replacing the 50 outer ring for a 52 Specialites TA TT ring, but Specialites TA list it only as 11 speed.I'm hoping they'll get back to me with good news asap before I get the bike delivered.
thanks for the video. Although I think I am sure I found the answer to my question I need your confirmation - I got some great deal on some bike which came with Dura Ace 9170 crankset 52/36. If I replace entire crankset (not just the chainrings) for new DA 9250 54/40 will it work flawlessly with that 11 spd cassette? thanks
so to confirm, ive got brand new DA 12 speed drivetrain, want to get an FSA brand 11 speed crankset & chainrings, it will work just not shift as amazing as the stock DA 12spd chainrings?
I used a 9100 crank with my 12 speed 8100 Worked well shifted well for about 4 months The Teeth started to wear on it And I had 2 consecutive chains snap Replaced it with an 8100 crank and the problem As went away
Can just triple check if I'm watching the correctly. I can use shimano 9200 chain rings with Quarq Dfour power meter? Everything will shift and calibrate as it should, but cosmetically it won't 100% line up
Btw, because of the new inner seal on the 12 speed crank spindle, you'll need the shorter '1st version' crank fixing bolt. The 2nd version is too long and will bottom out.
Great video. I didn't know that the 12-speed chainrings are 2mm closer. Also one thing you didn't mention, the 12-speed chainline is +1mm as compared to 9100. But it appears that's still within the adjustment range of the 12-speed FD so running an old 11-speed crank should be OK. I'm also curious if the 9200 FD will work with the GRX crank which has a +1.5mm chainline as compared to the 9200 crank. And it has a 17T gap.
I am going to switch to SL-K Light Tandem Rear Crankset (which, nominally, is 11sp). Have you tested the 12sp FD with the 11sp crank already? Does it work as it should or should I wait until (sooner or later) FSA makes the 12sp version?
Hey one thing you didn't mention, but I assume is the same, is the chainring bolts? Do the new 12 speed cranks use the same length chainring bolts as the 11 speed cranks?
Great video. Thank you. Quick question, can you put a non-sculptured chainring (ex: 46T AbsoluteBlack chainring) on the R9200 crank? I figured if the 4-hole PM like Power2Max that has no sculptured works with R9200 chainring, maybe it works vice versa with non-sculptured chainring with R9200? Just wondering.
You gave chain measurements early on that don't entirely follow the standard method for measuring chains. Can you measure again and post the results? Outside width should be measured at the rivet, outside to outside. Inside width is measured between the inner faces of the inner plates, not the outer plates. Outer width has changed with each change in total speeds, but 9-11 speed chains have all been nominally 11/128ths inner width between inner links. Since the inner surface of outer links only contacts the teeth during shifting, or on a 1x narrow-wide chainring, it's really the inner width between inner links that matters for chain compatibility with a chainring.
@GadgetBlues - ruclips.net/video/IYx3RR9rai4/видео.htmlsi=nTNyFl7lRz3NKYVN&t=337 but in 12 S also this curved surfaces of 2 lower screw sockets are not fitting perfectly crank arm, so it may mean most ot stability comes from pints where screws hold chainring.
105 and Ultegra have the same compatibility as dura ace. Grx rings are not compatible with any other shimano cranks, but you can use any GRX ring with any GRX crank.
People who had spare / custom big chainrings from 6800 to 9100 - will not use it on new 9200 of fc08 / fc09 cranksets (those last two from recent warranty Recall of cranks) > so Shimano is forcing You to buy new chainrings or when You have flat chainrings and skill - try to remove one angle on not fitting small-screw holding "arm"... Cause one screw holding arms in old 9000 and 9100 ia already littl curved.
@@hangrytim 9000 front mech does trim. you might have the components installed slightly differently. i swapped out the cranks on the same bike and they shifted exactly the same way
I think it should work I am thinking of swapping the 105 chainrings on Sora crank And on Shimano website if you see the exploded view it seems that same bolt is used for securing the chainrings And since they both have the same b.c.d the only factor left out is the shape of the crank design, which by eyeballing it doesn't look so different but I guess can be easily confirmed if you roughly compare it with someone else's crankset. Do tell if anyone has success with it

I don't think you understood what was being said in this video. The difference is BACKWARDS vs. FORWARDS compatibility. Backward compatibility means a new product works with old products. Forward compatibility means an old product works with new products. In context, if the 9000 crankarms work with 9200 rings, they are forward compatible. If the 9200 crankarms do not work with 9000 rings, they are not backwards compatible. This video states that FORWARD compatibility exists, but that BACKWARDS compatibility does not. The two videos you have linked to are about forwards compatibility. All videos agree with each other: on 9000 arms, you can use 9000,9100,and 9200 rings. On 9100 arms you can use 9100 or 9200 rings. On 9200 arms you can only use 9200 rings. The same applies to the equivalent generations of 105 & Ultegra.
This guy "looks" at the chainrings and says they're compatible? How ridiculous. Try actually putting an 11-speed crank into a 12-speed system and tell us what you find. It doesn't work.
Thank you for such a concise video. Very straightforward and to the point.
