We had a Le Car from 1977 to 1983. Great little hatch! Absolutely superb ride on rough roads. It would just absorb the bumps.
My wife bought it new, and we put 105k miles on it. Only repair I remember was having to replace a drive shaft. Even the original Michelin X tires lasted 70k miles.
About your compression: Yes that is the oil on the pistons sealing the ring gaps, maybe with a bit of cylinder rusting mixed in?
Tip o' the Day: Back in the '80s, I would store my old Volvo PV544 while I was abroad. Before leaving I would fill each cylinder with engine oil and just let it seep through the ring gaps while I was away for a year or so at a time. Worked like a charm, always had a great running engine when I came back.

probably the oil in the cylinders. The valves can also be stuck closed. But I think it's the oil. because that does not compress.

Yes, you normally put oil in to see if you can seal the rings and get higher numbers.

If a cylinder bore were full of oil, the engine would turn over.

@@franktechmaniac7488 Depends on how much oil you use. If the oil is just sitting in the gap next to the pistion to the top of the piston, the compression will be higher, but wil still turn over just fine.
Same goes for oil on pistons with the combustion chamber in the pistons. They really look like a cup.
If that is partly filled up with oil, the compression will be much higher but the engine will turn over just fine.

Atf still in cylinders making compression so high id say

I'm betting that the slight corrosion where the rings meet the piston has made a "slurry", combined with the ATF, to make such a tight seal.
The bright side is she'll run pretty good when it fires off.

Also, on top of the rings being wet, perhaps it had an headgasket job with a very... Optimistic machinist removing too much from the head? You're not supposed to re-surface the head, but the same thing happened on my Alpine's PRV, supposed to have around 170 PSI, read 210...

I've watched a few mechanics and vehicle repair channels and one thing they all seem to say is that putting any kind of oil in the cylinders can help with compression and even higher compression numbers on engines. I'm not sure if it is correct or not as I'm just a diy mechanic, but if so, maybe the atf you had already put in the cylinders to help the possible seized engine may be causing the anomalous figures you got. Loving the videos and been watching since your girls where a lot younger, pre teen at least for Nora, so keep it up .
