Corgan's solo is obviously epic for so many reasons - no doubt about it. Hands down a superior guitar player. But the continuation of the solo during the bridge by Iha is so, so critical and well executed every time I hear the live versions of this song. When Billy starts singing again and takes over the power chords, it's just a perfect example of everyone in the band knowing their role at any given time. Iha doesn't get the respect that he deserves!!!
This song has meant so much to me and helped me through some tough times. I also wrote a college paper and lyrical analysis on it. Thank you to the Smashing Pumpkins for creating such amazing music for the soul.
Hey man there are still cool bands out there creating cool shit!! Sadly they aren't easy to find because labels don't really pick up rock bands anymore. You just have to search hard for them, I'm in a psychedelic/punk/alternative band called Rainbow Machine, we just released our debut album about two weeks ago. The Pumpkins are one of our many influences. Check us out if you feel open.spotify.com/artist/3BaGbNNenJg9SrCQqYnI6V
People like to shit on pumpkins specifically billy and say his voice isn't good or whatever meanwhile the pumpkins as far as the drums and guitars always sound top notch his voice fits his music perfectly and the goddamn riffs and solos this guy wrote are out of this world
James NRK I actually love his voice because it’s fueled by raw emotion. I think a lot of people don’t understand that and are just interested in his voice being perfect, but I think the imperfection makes it even more perfect IMO (hope everyone can understand my rambling lol)
Anyone who tells you Billy's voice is/was not good has no idea what the hell they're talking about. These will be the same people who say Liam Gallagher's voice sucks or that Thom Yorke can't sing. Idiots, the lot of them.
What are you talking about him not having a good voice.. His voice is great.. He conveys emotions for days. He hits his notes in right keys and has an awesome screaming voice. If anything he is underrated as a singer. Also his guitar playing is phenomenal man he makes me so jealous with his leads they are powerful and emotional and is fluent on the sythesizer and drum machine. Not to mention He pretty much writes everything I think with the exception of drums. He is legend for a reason.
+Sadland Machines I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years. Billy Corgan is the strongest influence on my playing outside of Jimi himself. The swath and quality of his work puts him in the top 5 guitar players of all time... Top 3 in my opinion (Only being surpassed by Jimi Hendrix.)
If you can find it, there is old footage of him playing Yngwie M. style incredibly technical and fast playing from the late 80's. I always thought his songwriting overshadowed his playing, but he is technically really, really good. I've been playing for about the same amount of time Jeremy, although it was Aerosmith that made me want to pick up the guitar, it was the Pumpkins that continuously challenged me and kept me interested in getting better. Since then I have branched into other styles, but I will always work a Pumpkins song into practice... it just feels good to play. He is consistent with his playing, although the songwriting has been a little up and down lately... I will always respect him as an artist. Doubleplusgood.
I saw them on this tour and they opened with this song. When the distortion kicked in it was and remains the greatest rock and roll moment I have witnessed live. Simply mega.
Saw them in São Paulo 96 too. Hollywood festival. White Zombie, Supergrass, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure and other brazilian bands to fill. All in one stage. It was crazy, almost 24 hrs with very different tribes. 50000 people. I saw SP in all it's glory. I was just 14 and took a beating jumping to Mellon Collie. The cure finished, I was exausted and fell asleep in the back of the stadium. Woke up with the sun rising and a few groups of goths seeking shelter from the day light. haha
The power of Jimmy's drumming.......😵💫 5:03...he starts to really lean into it. Amazing symmetry with the rest of the band. My favorite guitar solo of all time by a long shot.
Live Pumpkins, there's nothing like it!!! If you didn't get a chance to see them in the early 90s, then you missed out. Too bad, I was fortunate enough to see them 3 times here in Vegas.
Billy Corgan is the perfect example that you don't need to be a great singer to be an artist, it takes vision and passion, Smashing Pumpkins has its place in music history and Billy Corgan as songwriter is one of a kind. One of the best albums ever heard by my ears.
I have to say this is probably one of their best songs. It's really the total package. The recorded version is ridiculous as well. He layered a crazy number of guitar parts on it. I was surprised they were able to play it live.
I was fortunate enough to see them live , it was mind blowing good. I was in my teens & the Pumpkins were the soundtrack!🤘🏽🤘🏽The reason I learned guitar was this song.
he is playing the notes an octave apart on the A and G string, muting the other strings with his left hand fingers. its a technique they used a lot. Corgan used it a lot, listen to Rhinoceros and Cherub Rock to hear it done there as well.
Me too.....always been in the top 3 of my favourite Pumpkins songs, if not my No 1. I've always loved Spaceboy too, so it's hard to choose between them. It's always felt like Corgan reached inside me and wrote a song from what he felt & saw.
I wouldve loved if the camera panned over to James more, especially right after the main solo where James finishes it off. Such an amazing song from an amazing time in my life.
I don't understand what people are saying about Billy's voice... I think it's perfect really. To me it's actually quite soothing. I always thought his voice was cool and unique, even though it's "nasally". I mean, it's probably not technically perfect in terms of music, but it's good enough for me. Smashing Pumpkins will always be my second favorite band...
Im sitting here, completely enchanted by his voice and the emotion that is coming from the song and just seeing them play their music, it really is beautiful. must have been amazing to have been there!
My most favorite song of all time. Raw, pure emotion set to music. Too feel something so profound, write a song about it and then be able to convey that emotion that the listener understands exactly how you feel… that is truly an art. Best ever bar none!
I'll be the first to admit that I don't know why you wrote this response but before I say anything I will say that I feel for you and your loss. Dope of all sorts takes alot of people to their graves too soon. With *that* said however, Billy himself has said that he got the title Soma from the book Brave New World, in which the drug that everyone takes to make all of their ills (mental or otherwise) go away takes this drug called Soma. He's didn't mean to reference the muscle relaxer.
Agreed. SP was a band that personified the era. They had energy, passion, and delivered some quality performances with pure, straight through the amps talent. One of the very best live band of all time.
amazing. they're so powerful lyrically and instrumentally... I'd have cried too at the beauty and depth of it.... so sadly beautiful... you're lucky you caught them when you did in their hayday....
I'm totally digging the Chamberlain praise in these comments. He was the "best drummer for this band and he played a big part in keeping them focused." If that makes sense...I LOVED this band...EPIC NYC Shows@ The Academy and MSG in 96!
✨Love this song✨ “From the wounded soul, comes poetry and music. In return, music and poetry heals the soul.🎶 I came across this quote in a hauntingly beautiful poetry book, “12:12 Midnight” by Danielle Ever Rose
ohh yeah ! i was 24,25 when i saw them live ! still one of the greatest bands i saw live ... specially it was at the 94 Pinkpop ...some footage is available of that concert . They played " drown " which is only on a compilation called " singles " . Fabulous

that is epic beyond words, better than beethoven, this is love, magic, night and day. I love when the distortion quicks in and billys telling us words, opening his heart with that wall of noise backing him up.. and that drumming.... amazing, love it and anyone who gets this song, this song will never fade

Thing with Billy voice is it his and his alone. No one else sounds like Billy, he might not be the best singer but can u imagine anyone else who old sing as perfect with these songs as him
3.37 one of the all time great moments in music, when it goes from quiet to brutal in one instant, I never tire of that bit
Couldn't agree more
The quiet before the storm.. :)
listen to Porcupine Tree. They do the same on "Anesthetize", "Russia on Ice" and "Way Out Here"
3:37
It's good but the scream into the the solo is better 4:26 onwards.
Jimmy Chamberlin is an amazing drummer!
To me is the best

My favorite moment of the song!! When James takes over the lead

My favourite song of all time.
Do you still have the paper? I'm curious to see how other people interpret it.
@@dylancolt6665 yes I do :)

The guitar just isn't as generally fascinating anymore. in their generations, it was just the thing to do. Everybody wants to be a rapstar nowadays.

His voice fits the style of the band and that’s all that matters

Over the years he learned how to control it more. At times his shrieking was obnoxious. There’s nothing to be sensitive about
Love Billy's voice thats what drew me to the pumpkins in the first place. Love this song especially the version on viewphoria filmed in the uk

Billy Corgan is such a fucking underrated guitarist.
Easily one of the best guitarists of all time.
The solo at 4:27 should be enough proof.
Ditto, happy to hear someone that thinks the same. He's easily my favorite guitarist.
+Chris Morris couldn't agree more, that 80's shred mixed with hendrix feedback type combination makes for some overwhelming guitar solo's
+Sadland Machines Soma solo is my all-time favorite. If a guitar solo could be made of pure emotion, it would sound like this.
+Sadland Machines
