This is part of why Billy always talks down abut D'Arcy and James as musicians because his version of perfection was so much higher than others and why he played most if not all of the string parts on the early albums. The only reason he did not have issue with Chamberlin was because Billy is not a very good drummer by his own admission so he was always fond of Jimmy as a musician.

    From you
    She led me on, down
    With secrets I can't keep
    Close your eyes and sleep
    Don't wait up for me
    Hush now don't you speak
    To me
    Wrapped my hurt in you
And took my shelter in that pain
    The opiate of blame
Is your broken heart, your heart
So now I'm all by myself
    As I've always felt
    I'll betray my tears
To anyone caught in our ruse of fools
One last kiss from me yeah
    One last kiss good night
Didn't want to lose you once again
Didn't want to be your friend
Fulfilled a promise made of tin
    Crawled back to you
I'm all by myself (close your eyes)
    As I've always felt
    ?
    I'll betray myself
To anyone, lost, anyone but you
So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me, yeah
Until the bitter, bitter end of the world, yeah
    When god sleeps in bliss
    And I'm all by myself
    As I've always felt
    And I'll betray myself

I've read Billy/Butch layered something 40 guitar tracks together to make this solo - some of which used an E-bow. I'm super impressed with how well he played it here, live, with a single guitar.

In terms of early era Pumpkins, this rendition is actually extremely tepid. Every other recorded version of Soma from 93/94 that I've seen is better than this. Billy is supposed to scream just before he begins the guitar solo at the climax of the song, and in this version he not only omits the scream but the entire vocal crescendo: "To anyone lost, anyone but you".
Additionally, the guitar solo in this version is weak and passionless compared to all the others. I recommend watching these two versions (and after that, the Fillmore 94 performance) to get a sense of what I'm talking about:

    • @Tyrannosaurine
      @Tyrannosaurine 4 года назад +5

@@Oh_I_Will This is one of the few songs credited as Corgan/Iha. James contributed greatly to both this and Mayonnaise. You know Billy isn’t giving a writing credit away for just a little idea here and there. James was integral to the composition of this song.
I happen to think Iha is a great writer:
He had a hand in writing the two best songs on Siamese Dream in Mayonnaise and Soma.
One of the best songs on Pisces Iscarot in Blew Away.

ah man what a song. so emotional. my favorite, and i loved them. i kind of went away from them listening to more aggro stuff, probably partly protecting myself emotionally from remembering my awkward youth, but you never forget what you know.

    🌹❤️
    Nothing left to say
And all I've left to do
    Is run away from you
    She led me on, down
    With secrets I can't keep
    Close your eyes and sleep
    Don't wait up for me
    Hush now, don't you speak
    To me
    Wrapped my hurt in you
And took my shelter in that pain
    The opiate of blame
Is your broken heart, heart, your heart
So now I'm all by myself
    As I've always felt
    And I'll betray my tears
To anyone caught in our ruse of fools
One last kiss for me, yeah
    One last kiss goodnight
Didn't want to lose you once again
Didn't want to be your friend
Fulfilled a promise made of tin
    Crawled back to you
I'm all by myself (close your eyes and sleep)
As I've always felt (don't wait up for me)
I'll betray myself (hush now, don't you speak)
To anyone lost, anyone but you
So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me, yeah
Until the bitter, bitter end of the world, yeah
    When God sleeps in bliss

Show some respect. The dude practically recorded the entire album by himself (minus drums of course). I don't get people who write a band off because of the vocals, which is just a fragment of the process. There's tons of mediocre singers throughout rock. You're too shallow to understand the greatness of this.

    • @samcarroll6210
