Smashing Pumpkins always makes me feel nostalgic. But unlike most music from when i was a teenager, smashing pumpkins made me feel nostalgic the FIRST time I heard it. They’re just tapped into the sonic resonance of nostalgia.
I listened to nothing but Dre & Snoop when this album came out. A friend of mine introduced me to it and we had an old school "listening party" where we just vibed out and listened to this CD beginning to end. I didn't get it at first but as time wore on, this album became life changing for me. It opened me up to so many emotions and truths within myself at a young age. I recently "rediscovered" this album and have been listening to it incessantly as well as the Mellon Collie album. It's beautiful music and can truly tap into your soul. Thanks so much for listening and sharing it with everyone who doesn't know it. Good to discover you guys.
"does Billy Corgan play any instruments or is he just the lead singer?" hahaha dude he played everything but the drums in recording this album, D'arcy and James Iha were too moody, drug fucked or both to lay down their tracks so Corgan went fuck it and did it all himself, fact.
Billy played the instruments because he was a much more efficient and tighter musician that James and Darcy, and also very controlling over the decisions and overall sound. It wasn’t because they couldn’t be bothered or drugged up
Last year I discovered Rhinoceros by The Smashing Pumpkins from their first album Gish. It's become my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song and Gish is a cover to cover banger!
I was JUST searching for Smashing Pumpkins reactions. And there you go. I'm a subscriber, so I saw you did this right away. I grew up the biggest Pumpkins fan, but I've fallen off the last 6 years or so, because their new music just hasn't had the same edge. But I will never get tired hearing anything they did, especially from 1988-2012. Fifty years from now, songs like this will always take me back to when I first started buying their CDs...
Their next album is supposed to be the third part of Mellon Collie and Machina storyline. I'm anxious to hear it personally (I've been a Pumpkins lifer as well). I love all the stuff up through and including the Machknas (other than Adore, that was a strange step for me). I've liked much of the material since, but not to that same level.
@@kitoyobeni1 I hear you. Actually, Machina 1 and 2 are my favorite albums. I've been dying for the reissue to come out! And yes, I'll be interested in what they put out. I just don't hold my breath for any real aggressive tracks.
@@BareThomas84 They haven't been aggressive yet since the reunion, but I'm still holding out hope for at least some classic Billy solos. This last album didn't have much for me, too many keyboards.
Your talk of sadness and embracing that feeling... I know exactly what you mean. You know it's not good for you, but it becomes comforting, like an old friend where you know what to expect from them. It makes you unhappy, but you also feel safe.
Yes, Corgan plays guitar. In fact, he does TONS of the instrumentation on their albums. The guy knows what he's doing. Although, James Iha wrote the heart of this song, as well as Mayonnaise
I went to high school in the 90s and was really into GnR, Nirvana, etc., but I'll never forget when one of my friends gave me a cassette tape of some band no one had ever really heard of and had a strange name. I was walking home from school and thought I'd give it a listen. Popped it into my walkman and hit play. The first song was Cherub Rock. I was floored. I have never been absolutely blown away by anything like that. It was such an amazing new sound and style of music. So original and unlike anything else. Every song on that album is amazing. The 90s was the last decade of great and original rock. That was when rock n roll peaked.
My favorite band. I went to Lollapalooza 94 to watch them headline. I was fortunate enough to be front and center, right under Billy's nose. They opened with Soma and I fucking cried. So much emotion all at once.
The song put a tear in my eye not because of the song just because of the reminder of how time just flies bye before you know it you’re 45. This cd was in the car at all times back in high school
Thank you for covering The Pumpkins. The Pumpkins are my all time favorite band. Tool is my second favorite all time, your channel is becoming my favorite review channel. You haven't even gotten to the mind bending stuff. Starla, Tales of a Scorched Earth and An Ode To No One. These 3 songs proove how dynamic this band is. Take a dive into his lyrics. Just amazing song writing. I request you react to An Ode To No One!!
You are 100% right! I mostly listen to depressing music, because that's my thought process. It's something I can identify with, and feel more understood, and not alone. For most people depression is something you get now, and again. Some people are that way 24 hours a day. I'd say I've been that way since I was around 8 years old. I'm 40 now, and the only thing that changed is the amount of stuff that weighs me down.
He has been a guitar prodigy. Learned very young. Was always a guitarist first. One of those rare people who could play by just picking it up according to his father.
They need to know that at the height of the solo, James actually breaks the the confines of his instrument by bending the high E off the fret board to register a high squeal (at 10:39 )Brilliant and one of a kind! One of their best! I was obsessed with SP back in high school. I would drive in my POS and smoke a little prior and just drove and had no destination. Siamese Dream is in my top #10 albums of all time.
Love these relating vids!! Was a 90’s attitude, MJK from Tool, Curt Cobain, Billy here Trent Reznor NIN, Robert Smith The Cure. Lane Staley AIC and on & on. Was a rejection of fame and attention. Usually created more curiosity, ultimately more fame. Musical geniuses that worked with so many, so many genres, behind the scenes snd front of scenes. Feels like this is bringing full circle. Rediscovering decades and putting together. Keep doin what your doin, truly rocks!
The interesting thing about this song is who Billy will “betray” himself to. “Betray” means to give oneself away to an enemy. He goes from “betray myself to anyone, but you”, to “betray myself to anyone “. It’s a process of someone letting their significant other and family, finally get in to their life. It’s about someone letting go. Might be a death bed or at a critical point in life, where Billy let’s everyone in to his life. Plus the solo. Might be THE best guitar solo I’ve ever heard. The gist of it is, “I and my experiences are not for you. They are for you and I to discover”.
The studio engineer Butch Vig, the producer for Nirvana's album Nevermind, produced this album (Siamese Dream) released 1993; it was the second album he produced for the Pumpkins, their debut album Gish (1991) being the first. That signature sound from this song and Mayonaise, with the heavily distorted, heavily compressed guitars layered and stacked in an aggressive wall-of-sound style that completely saturates the soundstage, is something that Butch Vig worked with Billy to craft; Billy has cited Boston and Queen as sources of inspiration for this style of production. Sick to see you discovering them. Suggest checking out Hummer and Silverfuck, both off Siamese Dream.
Dudes... I've been doing a pumpkins kick all night... Then you go and do this.. And yes, Billy can be a gigantic douche. He'll admit it. "If you want to be able to stick to your vision, you're going to piss people off"... Dude now runs the NWA.
Also, Billy Corgan would switch between lead and rhythm guitar with James Iha depending on the song. On this particular album, the rest of the band had some serious drama/drug issues keeping them from recording, and Billy pretty much recorded every instrument but the drums and orchestral pieces in studio.
Talking about Billy being a douche. I really think it was because he was so young, recognising his own talent for song writing and instrumental prowess. I mean at that age everything goes to your head, and his sheer talent on whatever instrument he picked up just snowballed into his personality. It's nice to see him more humble these days
What?! Haha. Oh boy. Corgan's great, but he's not even closer to his like Gilmore and Page when it comes to creative guitar sounds. Morello, Vai, Dimebag...all experimental guys that came before Corgan. Not to mention Dick Dale pushing the limits of guitar application and wild reverb sounds to begin with.
@@rmaxtpmx I think in terms of guitar effects, and experimentation in the recorded music he is correct. Dimebag had effects but it was more about tone and technique with him. I can tell you right now there werent over 20 guitar tracks on a Pantera record. Billy pushed the limits with feedback, delays, reverb, chorus, reverse delays, etc. Also, everyone hated Adore when it came out but that was literally the direction of music. Also.... Morello is a hack, F that guy. "ooo he used a switch as a gate on his guitar" others did that before him!!!
Great reaction guys. I loved the conversation at the end. Im the type of person who has always listened to “depressing” music. Its comforting for me. But, i can also understand the flip side, those who avoid depressing music because of the difficult emotions it can bring. There are so many great classic Pumpkins songs left to do. But, i would actually like to hear a newer song. They have a song called “Violet Rays” from 2012. It’s gorgeous and somber (like a lot of their music) and doesnt get enough attention.
I feel you Smokey. I think I was always attracted to songs like this so I could feel those feelings and get them out...catharsis...or maybe it was because it felt like there was somebody else out there that felt the same way.
Corgan played every instrument except drums on this album recording, because he knew what he wanted for sound and it was quicker to do it himself, he said.
Billy gets flak because he has a giant head. His ego is pretty bad. I for one like the dude. Plus hes always sober and his story about him seeing a shapeshifter is very mysterious.
The "Siamese Dream" album is one of the greats.
still my favourite
Yes it is
Billy Corgan is a shredder! Very underrated guitar player!
He's one of the best guitarists from that era..even better song writer imo

Listen to this whole album future generations!
It’s life changing.
The piano on this track was provided by Mike Mills from REM
The bass on this track ...totally changed my brain waves!
His music does bring you somewhere else. Porcelina, Starla, Spaced, Soma, For Martha....they're a whole trip.
Exactly. The good old days
My favourite of all the crazily great SP songs...
This is exactly how I listen to this song. It feels like you're dreaming
first time hearing this was on mtv live .... amazed
I wore through multiple CDs of this album throughout my youth
my fave fam... dope reaction
I’d have a pretty massive ego too if I ripped Siamese Dream, Melon Collie and Adore back-to-back-to-back!
@@xx-ug9hn- Melancholy haha
Absolute masterpiece
Billy Corgan is one of the most greatest artists ever.
Watching him shred that guitar live is freaking amazing. Y'all should react to silverfuck live
Fuck that song is epic, especially the version from Vieuphoria, the best way to see these songs.
@@eboethrasher hell yeah. You know what's up
