Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol with the latest details on the stand-off between Manchester United and Newcastle over sporting director Dan Ashworth.
Newcastle have placed Ashworth on gardening leave after an approach from United. The 52-year-old told the Tyneside club he wanted to leave on Sunday.
The Newcastle chief is top of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's list to front up his new football operation at Old Trafford after completing his deal for a 25 per cent stake in the club.
There is yet to be a formal approach for Ashworth, but that is expected to come this week.

And that mentality is exactly what ended up causing united to pay those figures for Maguire and Antony. Even if united are happy to pay that. Any good negotiator won’t unless they have to and would claim they won’t at first.

Uniteds signings are pretty much guaranteed more commercial pull because of Man Utd and the club we are not because of themselves. Not saying the player type doesn’t affect it all but ultimately the players that perform the best for us will result in the most commercial benefit for the team as the team does better in competitions

There is only one footballing powerhouse these days using the name Manchester, and they don't play in red, and they don't play in Salford.
United isn't paying anywhere near 20m for an administrator. It is in Newcastle's best interest to let him go rather than play hard-ball and pay someone for doing nothing. Newcastle previously poached him from Brighton, so this is not new to them. They wouldn't want him to be unofficially advising United through a go-between, would they? Five million is reasonable compensation.

Dan Ashworth doesn’t stay anywhere very long. Newcastle would do well to get as much as they can then let him go - he doesn’t seem to commit long term, so Man Utd are welcome to him
This bloke is supposed to be a professional journalist. There isn’t a stand off, MUFC haven’t even made an approach. He is doing work, his work is not being able to work for a rival or reveal any of NUFC’s plans for summer window and beyond as well as contracts of people like Bruno & Isak. ‘Something needs to be sorted out’, it doesn’t. NUFC can appoint a replacement and then let Ashworth and Man U sit until 2026.
If Newcastle wants to waste their money on someone who isn't performing a function for them, sure they can let him wait till 2026. In the mean time Ashworth could be unofficially advising United through a go-between.

Ashworth is on £1.5m per year. Just about every PL team pays far more than that to footballers who don't contribute to the team.

@@Justlookin958 No you are the clueless one. If he is on 1.5m per year the pay out fee for the remaining less than 2 years of his contract will be less than 3m. Unless he has a specified release fee in his contract, that 3m can be enforced through the courts. They also can't just reallocate him to another positions if his contract specifies in which position he is employed. A change of position would need to be renegotiated and requires a new contract.
