Newcastle have placed sporting director Dan Ashworth on gardening leave after an approach from Manchester United.
The 52-year-old told the Tyneside club he wanted to leave on Sunday.
Darren Eales, Newcastle United CEO, said on Monday: "We are naturally disappointed that Dan has chosen to leave, however our exciting journey doesn't stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately.

They are getting media focus and attention because it's what Manchester United are recruiting right now. Everything united gets more attention than other clubs. Now they are recruiting a sporting director so sporting director is what is in the news. Hated, adored, never ignored.
Doesn’t change the fact you’re not in the Fergie anymore and never ever will be again. You’re not an elite club anymore. Face it.
@@Newcxstlebro, we just robbed you of one of the best sporting directors in the world 😂

@@NewcxstleNewcastle never were, so how would you know? To be without a league title in almost 100 years… Don’t you feel even a little ashamed? You had Alan Shearer and still couldn’t do it. But he WAS able to win the league at Blackburn… We won a trophy more recently than Newcastle, we have the most fans in the PL, and we have the best young talent under 21. No one can reasonably argue with Hojlund, Garnacho, or Mainoo’s potential. What does Newcastle have? Money, sure. But Eddie Howe? What, is Pep or Klopp or Xabi Alonso, or Ancelotti going to ever manage Newcastle? No way. And you already have to sell players. You might even lose Guimares this summer because of FFP. Why else do you think Dan Ashworth wants to jump ship? And he is exactly what we needed along with a new direction from ownership. Money doesn’t buy you everything. By itself, money can’t get you the best players, best managers, best staff. Enjoy fighting for top 6. All of our issues over the last 10 years have been down to the Glazers, and the promise that Ratcliffe will be in charge of footballing operations is the first major, positive change since Sir Alex left. We are the home of Cantona, Giggs, Scholes, Rooney, Beckham, Ferdinand, Schmeichel, Best, and Ronaldo. Hope you had fun in your first CL group stage in 20 years. Newcastle is and always will be Alan Shearer’s version of Tottenham.

Just checked the 2024 gardening illustrated and cannot see Dan's garden being listed. Must be one helluva Garden he has, would be a shame to not show it off.
He should be alright at Old Trafford then, there are enough shrinking violets, weeds, and pansies there .... especially that Rashford, who yesterday proved once again that he could trip over fresh air!
Is it not centrefold?
Because you’re looking for it in the northeast, check Salford on Google maps and you’ll find it behind there.
I don't remember sky sports covering it when he went from Brighton to Newcastle, United is different levels
Because United is a big club
Even if United change their janitor, every news media will cover it because that's how big a club United is.

As a United fan, seeing the appointment of someone like Dan Ashworth is as exciting for me as it would be if we were to sign a big player. The managing structure has been a big problem at United for a long time for lots of reasons and different managers we've had over the years have said this since Sir Alex & David Gill left. Ralf Rangnick mentioned that United needed "open heart surgery", or in other words, it wasn't a quick fix - it required deep structural change that would take time to implement. Seeing Sir Jim take over and immediately get in Omar Berrada from City and now Dan from Newcastle is incredibly exciting and more exciting than any players we could bring in right now because it means we won't be overspending on players; we will bring in the right players to fit our playing style; we'll have someone overseeing every single operation inside the club ensuring everything is being run properly and everybody is empowered to do their job to the absolute best standards that are expected at a club like Man United. We've been missing this ever since Sir Alex left and I wonder what we could have accomplished if we had this structure even after Sir Alex left.

Ashworth done what? He turned England into the most boring team on planet earth along with Southgate.
He refused to sign a striker for Brighton and left them with Maupay upfront. Brighton went from relegation contenders to Europa as soon as he left.
Newcastle we’re close to signing Maddison, Paqueta and Diaby and Ashworth decided Lewis Hall was a better option.
He never recruited brightons hidden gems like Mitoma, Caicedo etc, that was Sam Jewell, all Ashworth did was negotiate a price. All Ashworth wants is over priced British players.
If Newcastle get Rangnick, he will be a huge upgrade over Ashworth. Rangnick is the bloke who scouted Haaland, Mane, Nkunku, Gvardiol, Keita, just to name a few. Don’t think Man Utd realise that Ashworth is very stuck in his ways of British players.
