I can still clearly remember watching it as a child on Toonami after school. That and the Android Saga prior. When Trunks showed up and cut Frieza in fucking half, he became my favorite character to this day.
It has serious flaws though. I'm blinded by nostalgia to agree, but re-watching it I'm just like... why was it written this way lol. It really should have ended here. Buu Saga had cool development for Vegeta but it ending with Gohan being the strongest was how it was always meant to be.

not true. Piccolo wrecked in the ToP..he single handedly trained Gohan back to his full power..tanked many hits that shoulda kiled Gohan, and took out the most powerful Namekian of the other universe.
This scene gives me chills every time. You can see piccolo's mindset here, he doesn't know if he can do it (beat cell) but hes still gonna give it his all. Hes so hurt that he can barely move his arms to brace for the technique (why he says "steady now, steady as she goes":) but still refuses to submit to the thought in his head that hes too weak. "That's it, Come on piccolo you can do this" shows a very mortal moment for him, sometimes even the strongest fighter has to remind themselves what they are capable of and find a way to break past it. He then puts emotions and memory behind it, reinforcing that hes doing this for the boy who is like a son to him and the man who gave him a second chance at life, even when he could've killed him. As you can tell, Im way too invested in this series lol but its my childhood so whatever

I love how in DB/DBZ the energy attacks had a punch behind them. The animations were so well done that you could feel power behind each energy attacks. There's nothing like the first Special Beam Cannon, this Light Granade or Final Flash in DBS.
I think Tien had the best animation for an attack even going all the way back to Dragon Ball, It looks like a wall of golden light coming up/down on his opponent.
My favorite piccolo scene plus he was out there by his self giving out smoke. His fight with .17 was easily one of the best fight of the db world hands down
Piccolo at this point was still the strongest Z-Fighter and he was still no match for a 1st Form Cell. It’s crazy actually… he was battle damaged from his fight with 17 though but who knows how much of a difference it would’ve made if Piccolo was fresh
You also got to account that he had plenty of time to absorb thousands of lifeforms prior to crashing Android 17 and Piccolo’s fight. I’m sure a senzu bean would have rejuvenated Piccolo but Cell masks his true power as a front. Cell even said after his fight in Gingertown needed to stay under the radar absorbing humans for partial sustainment while looking for the specific energy from 17/18

I was watching this scene over and over again when I was a kid. I am 28 now and I am still doing the same, going apeshit every time Piccolo says "This one's for Gohan and Goku" and blasts Makosen. What an anime this is.
I always got goosebumps when Piccolo powered up an attack, cause it was always something new and unique. Unlike most Z fighters, just a boring straight ahead Ki blast.

Kai was epic too, no need to hate on a good thing because you prefer another good thing. I was 3 and 4 when I first saw DBZ, from Frieza saga to Cell Saga's end, but Kai was still brilliant when it came out
The original 90's dub is corny as heck and the soundtrack is cheesy and inappropriate for the subject matter compared to Kai. You can't tell because of nostalgia. This was the version I grew up with by the way, but Kai is just the superior dubbed version.
OG Funimation dub did such a great job with this scene, and especially the next one when Cell rises out of the water to the “Cell kills man” OST. They really made him feel demonic and monstrous much moreso than other dubs and subs.
Light grenade and Hellzone grenade are my favorite attacks. Maybe Final flash beats them out on my list but hot dam I love this era of Piccolo! He's never been more bsdass in my opinion

While I agree that Dragonball's power scaling is outrageous, a case can be made that Piccolo is more careful about his Ki attacks not causing undue damage. They are likely stronger than Vegeta's just more compact

Vegeta's blew away half of Perfect Cell. But... I don't think what we see on screen matters. Roshi destroyed the moon when he had like sub-1k power level. Vegeta was a casual planet destroyer as a child. I head-canon it as their technique improving and they are able to focus more energy into the area they are attempting to attack.
