While Gohan obviously had an impact on Piccolo well before Nail, the way that Piccolo interacts with King Kai and the others on his planet (even ignoring filler) is a far cry from how he acts with Gohan, Krillin and Goku on Namek and going forward prior to fusing with Kami. He's still arrogant, but he is much more friendly and jovial.
This moment and the kami fusion was so magic to me. You are like taking all the other person memories, personality, power, feelings, knowledge and wisdom. This is not just a simple scene.

Until this moment (possibly 500 years) fusing with Nail, a different namekian whom (as far as we know) spent their whole life on Namek to fill in those missing memories having a home.

(He had stated earlier when Nail mentioned as his "original" self he would have easily defeated Freeza/Frieza/Freezer, Piccolo had said "I think I'd rather die than merge with that pathetic old weakling anyway"). He never had ANYTHING but hate and the desire to fight and beat Goku. He learned his fighting style and powers from battling other fighters on earth, picked and gleaned what he liked best and that was it. No family, no culture, no TRUE mentoring, just that lingering hint of something. The only friend he ever had was Gohan, who he taught everything he knew. Which was fighting, in the rough, harsh way that he learned. NAIL: One of the most reverant and traditional of Namekians. Possessing a wealth of knowledge about his people's history, culture, ethics and according to Lord Guru, "trained in the ancient fighting ways of our people". He knows MUCH about Namek, Namekians, the Dragon balls, the history of the planet and their entire existence. THE FUSION: 1:38 Piccolo staring at his hand...not the monster claw of Piccolo the creature but his HAND. The perfectly normal skin and look and feel and nails of a Namek. 2. "Wow...Unreal. On my GOSH." A wealth of knowledge floods his mind. Things he never thought of, from Nail's memories and knowledge. ABILITIES, SKILLS, MARTIAL ARTS STYLES. HISTORY. CULTURE. Where he CAME from. What is ON this planet. All filling the mind and conscienceness of Piccolo. 3. "This is a-mazing! I feel INCREDIBLE!" The dark hate and rage in his heart and soul, has a brilliant light of knowledge and spirituality balancing it out, relieving him of so much misery. 4. "YES! YES! YES! YES! I CAN WIN! I FEEL GREAT! I! CAN! DO! THIS!" Before Nail, he was flying into a suicide mission, for love of Gohan and defiance of Frieza/Freeza/Freezer. Now, with the abilities brought up to him, combined with his own fighting experience and his power level rising so high, he can WIN. He and Gohan aren't going to die, they're going to make it through this and live now. And as long as he lives, there's Dragon Balls that can resurrect the people slain on Namek. 5. "Yes! I'm home! I'm ALIVE! This is all a MIRACLE! I'm awake! I'm WIDE-AWAKE!" He finally SEE'S planet Namek. Through Nails' knowledge and memories, he KNOWS the beauty of this planet, the joys of the people...HIS people. He is a stranger without custom and culture no more. He BELONGS. He has a true purpose, not only as Guardian of Gohan (which is most important to him at this point) but he is now the preserver of their people's ways and knowledge and it has truly changed him, his life, his entire way of thinking. This is not Piccolo-Nail, this is Piccolo brought to so much more through Nail. 6. "Hahahahaaa! Hang on, Gohan! Here I come!" The laughter is of relief and victory. And now...he is much more comfortable with admitting his fatherly love for Gohan. Guess I didn't think it was so corny, thought it was deep...
I always wondered if fusing with Nail didn't suddenly fill Piccolo with knowledge and memories of Namekian culture that, in short, jolted a lot of other memories from his previous life before his split into Piccolo and Kami and maybe that's what he was chanting about. Sort of like recovering from amnesia to a degree and remembering what it was to be a true Namek instead of one half of one (powerful as that one may have been).
Aaide from Piccolo giving a motivatiol speech, this was actually deeper than just a simple powerboost. Piccolo and Kami never had any vivid memories of the planet because Kami was still very little when he got send away. Piccolo instantly feels he has finally arrived at his ancenstral home after he fused with Nail, even with having absolutely no knowledge of his homeplanet.
I really enjoy Piccolo’s smile when he realizes his power. Also knowing they’re bith warrior Namekians really helped them become that much more powerful
it bought them extra time until goku heal'd up.... so even if it didnt go the way vegeta wanted he did serve a purpose. also distracting freeza and taking him on. leaving piccolo n gohan n krillin alive until he got there. sadly krillin would be gone later on down the line. but i think this is also why goku decided to give vegeta a burial too. so he respected him and his power.
