What’s your EDC, what’s your pocket load out? How are you stashing all your kit on your person? Where’s your phone, keys, wallet, knife, flashlight and handheld stored on your body?
I have the RG405M and the Steam Deck. When I want to play some games on the go, I pick my RG405M. And I use the Steam Deck when I want some real power. Love them both! ❤
I've got the Retroid Pocket 3+ and I love it. Installed Daijisho on it and I'm playing it more than I do my PC games. Wish I knew about the metal version release before I bought it, but I'm still happy with the regular one. You may end up liking your metal over your other comparable devices. Hope you enjoy it.
I have a Switch and a PSP. The Switch is my Couch/All in one Device for the first party games and many third party games like Bioshock, the new Doom games, the Witcher 3 and for many many indie titles. The PSP-2000 is my main Emulation/Travel device for all 8-16 bit systems, PS1 and (ofcourse) PSP games. I love it's small form factor, it's weight and build quality. My favourite system to play on it is currently GBA. Advanced Wars 1-2, the portable Castlevania games, the Super Mario Advance series, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga and many more.
I bought the rg405m and I got a dud, it had 3 dead pixels, the shoulder buttons r2 and l2 both stuck out of the box and the abxy buttons stuck after some use. The included as card corrupted on my second power on. I tried to repair and work around the issues but I mailed it back yesterday and I’m going to try again. I’m on the fence about getting another 405m or trying something different. So many people love the 405m I think if I get another one it will likely be fine but I do have a bad taste in my mouth. Thanks for the video, great input.
MM+ for me over the 35xx its just a bit smaller and onion is better than garlic. 405m is my all day your spot on with that and indomt have a rog so steamdeck for me. Is gamma worth the install on the 405m ?
It's a bit messy and involved. Not super comfortable making a guide for it personally. But Retro Tech Dad has a great one on his channel that I'd recommend!
I just got my first strictly emulation portable in the Miyoo Mini+ and for the price I like it. I own multiple GBAs, a PSP 1001, a 3DS for DS and 3DS games, and a Switch OLED. I was on the fence on getting a Vita to basically play the same games I'm now playing on the Miyoo. Instead of paying $150+ for the Vita I paid $44 for the Miyoo. My dream portable is one with a six button arcade layout like on the Saturn.
I'm little confused now. I have ordered RG405M for playing retro games. But I see Ally also can also do retro gaming and has a better hardware. If we can do retro gaming on both Ally and RG405m, then where the 405m differs? Did I do a mistake ordering RG405M?
Retroid pocket 3 plus was prefect for me to do GameCube and ps2 has mini hdmi the rg405m and rg505 doesn’t have hdmi support that’s why I choose Retroid Pocket 3 plus.
For me, the devices are the RG353PS and the Odin Lite and... I'm still holding on for the perfect portable PC for me. Nothing has quite hit the sweet spot yet when it comes to price, battery life, screen quality, buttons / ergonomics and power. Some amalgamation of the Deck and the Ally with a much better battery life would probably do it. Very excited that there is real competition and the handhelds are only going to get better from here on!
I loved my 35xx and did the same as you. Brought it everywhere and pulled it out when my wife was busy. Was never embarrassed as a 35 year old man to play in public and often got a lot of interest in it. However I had 2 die on me in a month and customer service was a nightmare and I just can’t go through that again. I swore off Chinese handhelds until I saw the Mini + on sale for prime day and decided to take one last gamble because at least I’d have Amazons return policy to fall back on. I don’t love it as much as the 35xx but having wifi and retro achievements is pretty dope. I have a Steamdeck and hacked PsVita but have been eyeing the 405M for awhile. Also heard good things about the X55 from powkiddy that’s about $100 cheaper and still plays N64 and Dreamcast
I am a Chinese video game player. I know some retro handheld consoles like the 35xx. I think you are absolutely right. Because these portable devices clearly cost more than they should. And they don’t work very well. They break easily and the quality control is not good. But it must be said that because China’s game console production history is not very long, and these game consoles themselves are not in the hands of Chinese players, but you European and American players. But they don’t seem to hold their products to a high standard, but treat you the same way they treat Chinese players. What a shame.
For me it's the RG35XX, RG353P and Steam Deck right now. Also use the PS Vita, Switch and 3DS regularly though. Would love to get the ROG Ally as well, but it's just too expensive for me right now.
For portable device it may be convenient to connect BT buds without all tangled cable ;) For that reason I've switched my attention from RG35XX and Myioo Mini Plus to RG353V as it have BT on board. Not sure though if there will be no audio lag... any RG353V(S) users to confirm? Thanks!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Yeah, I guess it depends which BT codecs are supported by headphones and console. I think it should be ok when for example both of them suports AptX low-latency one, but I doubt the Anbernic or other retro consoles currently support it (licence fee). Hopefully some will in the future. Thanks for your reply!
Always good to hear real world thoughts and your use cases. Was on the fence with a rg353M/rg505 a few weeks back. Ended up scrapping that idea and looked at the rg35xx and Miyoo. Portability was more important and I wasn’t really that interested in anything past ps1 on a handheld. Ended up with the MM+. 👍

The RP3 plus metal is such a waste of money lol. But the plastic is soooooo good. Added with grips, it's perfect and comfortable for me. Playing retro games, native android gaming, more modern consoles like psp, dreamcast, ps2, 3ds and some gamecube. It's also perfect for streaming games.
running Steamdeck , switch and rg351mp. Ally is a better unit but just too expensive and poor battery life for me. RG351mp rarely gets used the screen is just a bit too small , its metal ( beautiful) but also cold to hold. Steamdeck OLED would be my choice if buying now.
Don't sleep on the RG505. Gamma OS makes such a huge difference to it that it's like a brand new system. The OLED screen really sets it apart under Gamma OS.
So I have the ROG Ally and I love it, but I would like something to go along side it for retro and android games. I've been thinking either the RG405 or Odin Pro. Cost isn't really a concern, ease of use ,setup, and battery life are my main points. Which of the 2 would be best for me.
My current drivers are the Steam Deck for at home gaming, Switch for Nintendo exclusives, and the Retroid Pocket 3+ for my breaks at work. I like the RP3+, but I do want to try some other "retro" devices eventually. Any "retro" devices running Linux that you would recommend?
I bought 2 anbernic devices rg353v and rg405m, had L shoulder buttons issues I'm done with and anbernic, looking into Loki Max for my beast portable and Odin pro or retroid pocket 3+ for my go to retro handheld

I have a lot of handhelds so still figuring out my combos. I have a miyoo mini plus but it will probably not be a daily driver…might let my wife use it since she is into retro Mario games. I am torn between RP3+ and RG405m for my smaller retro handheld (up to Dreamcast/N64). I’m leaning RP3+ because the screen is fantastic, but I love the build and screen size of the RG405M. The RG405M’s UI, etc is better with GammaOS but for some reason the CRT shaders don’t look as good to me. If I can figure out the shaders I might end up being torn again. So my combo is looking like RP3+ or RG405M (leaning RP3+) for retro and some android apps and gaming stuff, Switch for the games, Steam Deck as jack of all trades and less demanding pc games, and ROG Ally for slightly more powerful pc games and some games that won’t play right on Steam Deck.

I think it comes down to how people set it up. With Playnite autolaunching on startup, it literally is pick up and play for me - I just jump right into a game and it jumps back to Playnite after.
