The front entry for our home is finally done! In this episode, we finish building the deck overhang for our front porch and build a living roof on top of it.
Love your videos, but please take advice from an old woodworker: use push sticks on the table saw. One day the wood WILL bind and you'll lose a finger or 3. Keep up the good work.
I lost 3.
I was cringing each time I saw his hand reach the blade
Oh, yes. Things happen in a flash! Reciprocating saw blade tip into my leg above the knee. Woman woodworker friend lost some fingers cutting birdhouse pieces on her table saw. Worst of all lately, an Amish neighbor nearly died when he tried to crosscut a 2 x 4 on a table saw, it bound up, and flew back into his abdomen doing immense internal injury. YES, YES, YES to the push stick.
Seen digits go bouncing down the table lane.
My son lost one, rendered another one useless
Since I love uncontained, your baby shower gift is my greatest parenting trick to make night feedings short & fast! Rule one: no talking it over stimulates the baby. 2.feed baby immediately, don't change wet diaper first because that cold air on the wet baby wakes the baby up. Feed first then the baby has thanksgiving food coma and won't care if you change her! It never took more then 15 minutes and he slept threw the night by 12 weeks! Remember no talking.
Beau had the funniest look on her little face..."are these really my parents? I'm so embarrassed". LOL
Love what you both are doing!!! HOWEVER
PLEASE.... lower your table saw blade when you rip; and USE A PUSH STICK!!! Take it from a guy who cut off 2 fingers in high school (Reinstalled and working fine, 45 years later), you can ONLY have a bad experience if something goes wrong. I've been a carpenter for nearly 50 years, and have SEEN some B A D things happen when other were using saws improperly. I was raised on a farm, and know how dangerous many things are, but, I learned my lessons early and want you to learn from others mistakes!! You're a dad now, you have to be careful...... GOOD LUCK to you all. Jerry
I hope they read the comments.
I'm wondering what is a rip and a push stick lol
Jerry, you are the BOMB! providing advice from someone who has been there, and it is SO important. We all know these bits of advice from watchers are attempting to be helpful, not critical. My husband did it too. Building our deck. NO push stick, cut off 3 fingers because the saw jumped a knot, and nearly bled to death before getting into surgery. I was at the hospital, working L&D nurse, when it happened. I fainted when I saw his fingers being prepared for re-attachment. He is a born and bred Iowa farmer too. He still misses parts of those fingers, and some sensation in all of them. He lowers his saw, and uses safety (push) sticks now. I hope they read your post and take note. You can actually die if you are far from town and have a horrendous accident.
Chainsaw almost lost the last 3 fingers on my right hand breaking safety protocols. I grab a bunch of seedless mulberry branches you come up and cut them, we were both tired and it wascoming up on dusk we wanted to get the job done and get paid that day...as it was 6 stitches between my last 2 fingers. I got wayyyyy lucky I still have all my fingers. Just dumb lucky
Yep, I follow that blade height rule and because of it I only cut half way through my thumb instead of cutting it off about 4 years ago. Got real lucky and didn't get the bone.
Beau: I'm not with these people.
You guys are too funny.
This has become my favorite RUclips channel
Thanks for letting everyone see Beau! She's a doll!
BEAUTIFUL ❤💕
One thing I noticed while watching your uploads, is I spend 90% of the time smiling and I am over-joyed at each new success you two kids have. I wish for you to be happy.healthy and married to each other forever to raise your beautiful family. P.S that long-suffering look on Beau's face tho...
The baby had an expression that said "Mom....Dad... you're embarrasing me!" :)
Can you imagine, when she gets old enough to look back on these videos, what she'll think when she sees what her parents did to her?
thats so lol
LOL i think your right , but it looks like there going to have a lot of fun in life , God Bless Them .
Absolutely love the tin foil hats!! And your sense of humor even more. Can't forget...living roofs are a great idea!
That look on her face, "Really, 18 more years with these two?", priceless.
Lol!
lol yes was good!
Lol these people are my parents! God did you hate me! Fun video
@@raynonabohrer5624 lol It looked more like a "Mom, You stopped moving and rocking me"

Love your channel guys, however Spencer keep your damn fingers away from that saw blade!! Had a friend lose some fingers and not a pretty site once they are gone. Use a push stick. Baby is beautiful. I can adjust her antenna with a spectrum analyzer so she can get better reception with her new hat.
I lost the bet with my wife on that roof!! She told me it would be a living roof. Now I have to do this wash for a week!! Dang it!! O well it's worth it. PS my wife and i use your videos as a small date night lol. Funny the small things in life are the best. Love ya'll Thanks for sharing. God Bless..
Totally agree about the living roof: Mine is going to be 30 years old this summer and it is COOL!
Boy is she going to have questions about her parents one day! Lol
Yeah, I think she's questioning now whether or not she got the right parents. She wasn't feeling those aluminum hat's on anybody!! 🤔🙃🤣🤣🤣
It'll be well documented.
At least later she can pull up the video(s) for evidence as needed. All her future teenage friends are going to have a field day with such a video history! I can see it now, she'll show up at a surprise b-day party for her 16th, and everyone's wearing pointed aluminium hats as they yell surprise! Oh the memories! Priceless!
😏💨 If only we all had parents like these two (in the white house), the world would definitely be a much much... infinitely better place!

Oh my goodness I can’t handle the tinfoil hats. Freaking hilarious!
Signs is one of my favorite movies.
Love the living roof, 1/4” per foot fall is what plumbing drains run. Spencer you are without a doubt a master of what ever you apply your self at. 👍👌🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Lol, y’all are just too funny, I love the tin foil hats. Makes me think of “Signs” one of my favorite movies. :)
Cant wait to see finished product, inside and out. Where do you sleep at end of the day.?
Bahahaha! The last minute was the best... making the tin hats... “alright everyone, make a serious face” 🤣🤣🤣
That baby is NOT having it 😂
The tin foil hats; I'm thinking this years Christmas card photo.
Hey son get a push stick on that table saw before you get hurt your self just friendly advice
The tin foil hats photo ...

That is the easy part wait untill you have to get the the lawn mover up there to mow.
Congrats on the baby she's a doll, but she looks like she's wanting out of the picture with the foil hat on!, Good luck and Godspeed!
I'm really hoping for more appearances by Sleep Deprived Mackenzie.
I really wish the one negative Nellie would shove off. you guys are great!!!!!! You can also use some f your veggie compost to add to the living roof creating a rejuvenating the soil for you flowers or vggies. love it!!
I'm with you. WTF is wrong with some people? Haters gonna hate
Coffee grounds, banana peels, etc work great too.
@@erikrenner Coffee grounds must be used minimally because it can overwhelm them.
Also a cayenne and mild soap can be used as a pesticide.
@DIY Projects Thank you for your question. if you do not like it then stop the agenda 21 bs!! There are great people in North Korea who can not get out there are so many things we cannot control. At the end of the day no matter what your belief system is we need to make a stand together to make a change in the world. Good bad who is it to decide. Freedom of choice is key and you are right. who am I to judge someone else. If you do not like it then skip it but stand together as a human being no matter the race or where you are from. Their lifestyle has nothing to do with You. YOU are not them. I make mistakes all the time and try to correct them. It is just me fighting against self and programming. So what is your story? Mine has no beginning nor end, it is just what it is. LET Peace be with us all.
Hope you factored an overflow or drain for the living roof, else it will fill up with water, check out wicking beds if you haven't so already, cheers
We liked the episode! One safety tip on the tractor. Drop your bucket lower when driving, less top heavy, less tippy.
The head cam shots were giving me the willies!
Haha i thought Mackenzie was dressed like the witch in Snow White and was offering an apple to Spencer 😂
Loved the tin foil hats!
The tin foil hats 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing your story. A question if I may: Have you considered lava rock in place of the stone above the roofs at the house entrance and pump house. I suspect it would be lighter per square inch of material.
Ah the behaviour of new mom's! You can see the chronic lack of sleep crazy, in their eyes. Never cross a new mom, they are some of the fiercest people I know!! Love you Jen!! xoxoxo
Be cool if you can extend the patio from the first step with a roof over it as well would be cool other than that I love watching your show 💯
Beau's sweet lil face is like "K, mom and dad, I really love you guys, and I'll wear the foil hat, but, you're soooo annoying!😐" 🤣💛
You two are the best!
Love y’all relationship and video remind me of mine and my wife..❤️❤️❤️
I think Spencer looks like a Sultan out of some movie. My wife asked why Bear didn't get a hat?
The tin foil hats are awesome! Baby girl was pretty chill with it. Great idea on the living roof - that should look great over the entrance once it starts growing. Do you plan to capture the runoff from that area for use elsewhere?
Don't put a living roof on the containers, membrane or not I think it will rust through over time. Moisture just from condensation will spell trouble. Just my thoughts..
water does find a way. i thought he said water collection or living roof. he chose water collection
That part is not container, that is just the overhang roof that they recently built.
@@timidater4803 Point taken😊 Let's hope that doesn't happen.
I have a living roof on my detached garage (ca. 4 tons of topsoil) (my neighbor has it on his house, a lot of supermarket have it), no rotting things for the last 10 years and there will not be in the future :-) Just choose the right construction. Use EPDM as it can be stretched sooo wide.
Maybe add some insulation 1st
You all should plant some strawberry plants on the living roofs would be pretty and fun to have something you could eat as well.
"Make a serious face!"
Stop! Your killing me!
That is comedy gold! Thank you for sharing your clowning around with us. (That shot needs to make it's way into your intro!)
Excellent progress the dec roof looks great and a living roof will give it a splash of color. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the great new upload, just love you guys, love and respect from the United Kingdom 🇬🇧
Dr Gunsmith i will second that 👍
just binged the entire channel.. thanks for taking us through the journey!!
With a green roof on the rest of your house could possible effect the quality of your drinking water.
I love the last port of the video more lol, later guy's take care Family I will see you soon :)
I think the living roof would wreck your rainwater collection system. They don't go together. They have little benefit on a small scale in a rural environment.
It is only on the porch roof... right? Water catchment is on the metal roofs.
They are only doing the living roof over the front door porch deck. Maybe 5'x6'? Won't impact the rainwater collection system.
@@tf5pZ9H5vcAdBp, BINGO !! NOT CONNECTED AT ALL !!
Living roof, very cool! 🌱 wonder how trailing strawberries would do on your living roof? Bear- bear cracks me up watching dad shovel 💩. What a good looking family.
Bro, you should have just built a deck to the left of your door instead of those two sided steps.
Good idea. With rocking chairs. Another project! 🙂
Don’t forget their back deck though! Plenty of room for rocking chairs ☺️
I looked the other day and you had 301K subscribers...you now have 308K...wow! Good on ya!
What does it "feel like" type of questions are subjective and therefore, he was right regardless of what his answer was. Sorry, Kenz!
Haven a living roof will cause moisture over time even with a plastic membrane I have seen it happen an will rust out an rotten wood
not to mention the endless supply of spiders dropping down over the edge as they venture away from their 'living roof home".
We had a living roof and planted a spice garden.
Baby is like: Did I pick the right parents?
Love you guys and all you do! This is what my fiancé and I hope to be starting within the next 2 years!
I can tell you will have fun embarrassing your kid when she grow up
I know we did. Oh and we still do, da, do, do. It's our job, it's what we do.

You look like a tin foil unicorn. Baby wasn't happy.
No to living roof on the porch cover. When it leaks, and it will leak, you'll get mud running down the containers. If you wanted greenery on the roof, purchase some large plastic totes and put those up there.
And where will the water go eventually it will fill up
@@jeffmabry4112 Yeap especially when it rains.
As they have undoubtedly experienced, it rains buckets in southeast TX.
@@jeffmabry4112, There won't be any mud running down anywhere. The roof is totally sealed off, except the lower end at around the 6:03 mark where the whole thing will drain into a gutter and downspout I'm sure.
Your family portrait is with tin foil hats!
Precious and hilarious as hell. 😆
Mackenzie, motherhood suits you well.
Love what you guys are doing to the house. Keep up the good work.
The look on the baby's face was like, fml.
Lol.
Sorry Beau, you dont get to chose your parents, your just got to make do.
Tin foil hats, I love it! It's looking very good. Don't forget to do the inside too.
I laughed so hard I cried. By far one of your best videos. The Tin hats were priceless. Momma you are looking radiant and beautiful!! This was so fun! Thank you!!! 😉🙏🏽🤪💕🐕
Love these two but honestly don’t get the whole living roof thing.
Neeshy Cat roof, home stay cooler in summer for one thing which a metal home could use. Plus I think it’s a challenge they just like the challenge of giving it a try. Risk takers. I think he’s doing it with the right liners. It will be pretty but watering in the hot months...that’s going to be a challenge.
It's a kitty pooping box , if he can avoid the ants nests.Ants will have a permanent , dry, cool home in those stones under that waterproof membrane.
pistolpeds baking soda and sugar will eliminate ants without harmful chemicals. Safe for children & pets.
Why put stones under waterproof membrane?
@@savashzaynal6502 Allows drainage and avoids root rot, similar to the natural way water would drain. Same reason you should put rocks in the bottom of most potted plants.
I must say, I absolutely love your off grid home. It’s coming together beautifully. I envy your little family and I love watching your videos.
Keep up the good work.
Living roof is going to look great againts the steel containers. Plus it seems to really suit you all's personality.
Spencer! 30 year shop teacher here. Stop running your hand between the fence and the blade on that table saw. Use a push stick.
Wisdom grows, fingers do not
The only problem with your videos is, They Are Just TOO DAMN SHORT!!! Also, please show the introduction of Beau to Donkey!
I hope you know how cute you all look & how you put a smile on my face!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing it all! Love to little Beau! Take care and God Bless.
When you roof with a ladder, you throw the load on one shoulder and climb the ladder using your free hand to hang onto each rung as you climb.
Or you cut the lengths that you need and just carry those up. Sorry, I try to make things as easy as i can. I've been saying for years that, "Necessity may be the Mother of invention but laziness is the Father."
You could tie a rope around the ice and water shield box to pull it up when on top of the roof, too.
I'm sitting here yelling the same thing at my phone, carry it on your shoulder. Or cut what you need and bri g it up.lol
Beau and Bear the stars of the show
The look on Beau’s face at the end was epic! Lmao 😂 🤣🤣😂🤣
10:54 Never put your hand there! There’s a special tool for that!
I think living roofs are just a problem waiting to happen and you will deeply regret it down the road when your doing repairs , everything from wet rot , rust and pest/termites .
It's literally a 4'x7' or whatever size it is. No need to worry.
Since you asked, the disadvantages of a living roof out weigh the advantages. All that stone and soil are heavy so you need to make the framing and support more sturdy than a normal roof, all that costs more. The plant roots are going to, over time, penetrate the water proofing material. When that happens you have to remove all that stone and dirt to fix the leak. Much more hassle than a normal roof.
Living roof over the main entrance.......big mistake!! What happens when it rains over 2 1/2 inches and overflows the 2X4 border?
There is a gap along the bottom above the drip edge. Just like on the back side of the pump house roof. Any water not absorbed by the soil will drain through the fabric and out the gap.
@@aquadesignsbymlt4769 It's several feet out from the door at the front side of the roof. The side along the container does not have a drip edge and will remain dry. They can go out that way if it is dripping actively. Or they have exits on two other sides of the house.
Yea just shit flavored water dripping off the roof in front of the front door. Lol
@@joelmiller4364, HAHA, WRONG ! There won't be any shit flavored anything running down anywhere. The roof is totally sealed off, except the lower end at around the 6:03 mark where the whole thing will drain into a gutter and downspout I'm sure.
Hahaha omg I love you guys. House is coming together, looking good! great work! I’m so glad I found your channel, I’m loving everything about this process and watching your journey. You two are so cute lol
Waiting for the Aluminum foil Hats in the Merch Store 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Okay you've got two living rooves now, plant some herbs or vegetables and utilize them to your off grid advantage.

"...make your antenna bigger..."
I'm not saying anything. 🤣
Excuse me...., but is that YOUR Freudian slip showing? ✌😄
Must be those tight jeans.....lololol...
He HAS muscled up over this project. 💪😄👍
Please put a link to your music. I love it!!! The look on Beau’s face was hysterical.
What's with the thumbs down? McKenzie n Spencer is Awesome screw you haters!!
Maybe a trellis with grape vines instead of a "living roof"? Give you shade during the summer---and grapes??---but not much protection from rain. It's a toss up either way---but no mud running down the side of the containers.
But, bees!!! Which would be great, just not at the front
door!
There won't be any mud running down anywhere. The roof is totally sealed off, except the lower end at around the 6:03 mark where the whole thing will drain into a gutter, I'm sure.
It’s a nice idea but why not plant a perennial spice up there like mint? Something that is useful and has a nice fragrance.
Buy drought tolerant flower seeds and spread them on the roof.
CALife a Xenoscape, for sure what I would do. These plants dont Need more than about 4” soil to grow well in.

Be sure to make some hard copies of the "Tin Hat" photos. 100 years from now your great-great grand-kids will wanta see that.
I share your passion for self sufficiency and real green living. When I was young I imagined owning land with a low flat area for farming and livestock, and a house built on or into the side of a hill. Near the top of the hill would be water storage containers like what you have using gravity to feed the home. The drain field would go into the grazing area of the farm/property. I also envisioned a windmill for some power. Solar has come a long way since then and it seems to be enough. Of course a woodstove for heat and powerless cooking too. I'm too old for that dream, but sharing it might help someone else.
Baby with a tin foil hat lol
That's everything
I think a 'living roof' would be the most hail resistant roof you could install - am I wrong?
I think it would do quite well, like you stated !
It’s so cold!
What’s the temp?
45°
I’d kill for 45° (above zero). I’ll be out in shorts and a T-shirt when that happens.
Chuck Saunders try living in 120 degrees Fahrenheit here in Phoenix during kid summers June and July ;) also I’m from Iceland I’m done with negative -20s and -30s
temps are always subjektive so 45° seems to be cold for floridians
question. for your roof top green roof, is there a drain for it in case you get a heavy rain and too much water up there? just wondering.
That’ll be a good one for her high school year book!
You need to go on the show where they ask partners questions to see how well they know each other, Spencer has it down, in fact he might be psychic. (p.s. can't remember name of show).
Beau, on the other hand, in a few years, will be giving it, Mooooommmmmmmmm, don't.
''The Dating Game'' Started in 1965, you good ole oldie, just like me, lol !
I think the thought of a living roof is keen but I'm going to bet it will cause far more issues over the next few years than you are going to want to deal with.
I’m betting there will be rot issues. I’m not sure though, I’ve never tried it.
The roof is totally sealed off, except the lower end at around the 6:03 mark where the whole thing will drain into a gutter and downspout I'm sure. If there are any issues, which is highly doubtful, it would be extremely small, given the size of the roof, right ?
Love the baby's face at end! You guys are great but needs to be longer show , Thanks
Idk! Living roofs introduce moisture moisture produces mildew eventually leading to mold and rot but hey if thats your dream then live it .just my thoughts
The roof looks great... what’s next? Back deck perhaps..??
