It is though, thousands of terrorists have been killed so far. You must be insane to believe the civilian casualties numbers being released by Hamas, who lied about hospitals being bombed and who came out with a list of 8000 dead civilians with names and ID numbers within days, when Israel is still not able to identify all their victims, after 5 weeks. And has there EVER been a war without civilian casualties? No, and there can't be, especially not if Hamas is building their military infastructure in civilian areas and literally have their main terror tunnel UNDER the biggest hospital in Gaza. If that is not using their own people as human shields, then what is? Why do you think their weapons and missiles are stored in schools and hospitals? Because a, they know Israel would never blow up a hospital or school that has civilians inside, and b, if they every did, the whole world will hear about it within 10 minutes, which we've seen when they came out with the story of a hospital being bombed which was literally only a parking lot, and STILL the whole world wrote about it, BBC, CNN, everyone. And it wasn't even true. As a result attacks on Jews around the world happened, cause people believed they bombed a hospital. So imagine what would happen if it actually were true. Every innocent life lost is a tragedy, but when it comes to terror, you need to look at the bigger picture. When ISIS or the Nazis were fought, were people only worried about the civilians casualties? Because that is not how it works. Ever wonder where the almost 1 Billion$ in aid go which Gaza receives annually? Clearly not to the people who need it most. You would think that's enough to build bomb shelters or make sure civilians have food and water. But Hamas leaders live in mansions worth millions in Qatar, hiding like rats, barely ever setting a foot inside Gaza, these men are worth billions of dollars which they take from donations and aid money. They could easily help the people of Gaza. But they literally say it is not their job to take care of them, but rather the UN's job, since "most of the people in Gaza are refugees" and they need them to die as martyrs in the name of Allah for their cause, and the tunnels were built so Hamas members can be protected, not civilians. There are recent interviews, you can look them up. They HOPE for a permanent state of war. And if they ask for a ceasefire, it's only for a couple of days to bring in more weaponry from Iran or to move Israeli hostages to god knows where. If they wanted a ceasefire so bad, they wouldn't break them everytime. They have broken EVERY ceasefire so far. Each and every one. Yes, innocent babies and civilians died on both sides and it's fucking tragic, but the innocent lives lost in Gaza are a result of their disgusting "regime" which keeps starting wars they cant win and which is mainly funded by the Islamic Jihad btw, who we all know oppresses their own people and kills women who don't wear their Hijab properly and then say they fell or it was an accident. Hamas has threatened Israel they would do another October 7th attack again and again and again if they get the chance. I don't think any nation or country in the world would accept that. If America was threatened that 9/11 was gonna happen again and again and again, should America just wait for it simply to aboid the risk of killing innocent lives on the other side? That just doesn't make sense.

A 2 state solution was offered by Israel many times and Palestinian leadership always refused. Israel even pulled out of Gaza completely in 2005, and look what happened on October 7th. Hamas will not stop the terrorism, and will continue because they want the total annihilation of Israel and genocide of the Jewish people. That's why Israel must defeat Hamas if there will ever be peace amongst Israelis and the Palestinian people. But even once Hamas is gone, who will take up the leadership of the Palestinians? Another terrorist group? It's not that easy.
1:03:40 As a German woman with extremely light skin: Rebecca is right. In winter, when my skin would actually be white-white, not a hint of beige (beside the hundreds of freckles + little cute moles on my arms and face) I am more blue than white, because actually it's just translucent and my veins pop through. How irritating would THAT look on a screen.
Let us not forget how surprised people were when The Golden Girls did so well on TV. Groundbreaking. Single women living together. But, even crazier, old single women living together.
German woman here. Yeah sure, in my childhood I imagined Snow White to be super white in an almost supernatural white, but a) makeup exists and b) the fact that her skin is described as white makes up about 0.000001% of anyone's headspace when listening to the story. It's simply the description the mirror gives to the evil stepmother for her to identify her. It matters *NONE* to the story. She could literally be smurf blue and then the mirror says "go after the blue-skinned lady". Makes it slightly weird, but still the same story.
Ariel isnt a role model, but her fandom of humans, infatuation with eric and stubborn adventurous attitude to the point of extreme danger is true to so many of our teenage experience. She is heavily flawed, but she is passionate. I love the little mermaid, its not about learning its about adventure and romance in my opinion.
Dr. Honda i urge you to have a Palestinian person on your show for an interview. I think this would be incredibly helpful for your SWANA viewers and would be a great learning oppurtunity for you to understand the history a little bit deeper
listening to this episode continues to show me that there is far more you both need to learn about Palestine & Israel. There are SWANA & Palestinian therapists who could bring so much information forward that, frankly, Rebecca is not qualified to speak on. No offense to her, I just am seeing this as a consistent blindspot in these episodes. Dr. Samah Jabr is a great person to at the very least read from before you make another episode about this “conflict”.
Your definition of woke and how some online people use it as an insult 39:09 made me respect you immensely. I can consistently trust you as a therapist.
31:30 - So I have tried to be very observant of power dynamics as a woman of color in a male dominated field in the mid-west USA. It really took a full federal audit for my office to take any action on the things I had been pointing out for years. My boss does have a gentle voice and avoids conflict, the new assistant director is an assertive woman (and I am so freaking happy for it)! I've noticed when her firmness is scary and grating as an unconscious bias, and have been overall ridiculously happy that she is addressing issues that needed addressing. It is definitely a process of learning and continuing the good fight for respect while honoring where other people are coming from. In other aspects of work, I can't stand men who are considered "assertive" but who are bulldozing bullies who have gotten used to getting everything their way. In the same light, I work to uplift brilliant women who might have very low voices, making sure there is absolute silence when it is their turn to speak. Thanks for covering this. It might not be the toughest topic you are touching today but still a valid conversation during these overwhelmingly heavy times.
It's a bit hyperbolic to say you can go to work without doing any preparation with your appearance - maybe if you work in the back of a store or in a factory/warehouse. Men still judge each other Kirk, doesn't mean women don't have more expectations on them, but it's still important to point out, as it's misrepresenting the more nuanced reality (rather than "women have it worse, period, men have no expectations on them")
I don't think he'd dispute any of what you're saying here. He was just trying to make the point that the expectations for the amount of effort men and women on average, are told to put on their appearance before they go out is so much different that men have the luxury of not needing to dress themselves up every time for even common mundane occasions like going to work or going to the grocery store, where how you look shouldn't matter. I think that's what he was trying to say here, but just used a bad example where both men and women would obviously be judged negatively to the extent unique to their respective gender if they didn't look their best. Still, he's not wrong in the sense that if a man were to go out not without doing anything to their appearance beforehand and a woman did the same thing, the woman would definitely be more likely to be looked down upon and judged more negatively.
@@ania5038 I don't see what's necessary here to add your personal feelings about women who wear their pajamas to the grocery store, but I'm not talking about whether women _do_ actually put effort into their appearance before going out per se, but the _perception_ other people have of them when they do vs. when they don't. And by 'appearance' here is more than just clothes, but also makeup, hair, nails, etc.

Israel has reached for peace many times. It's hard to make peace with people who want a "from the river to the sea", they want the entire land free of jews.
@@missrudy8553 It sounds a lot like the research you have done on this topic (if any at all, in which case I strongly and genuinenly encourage you to before speaking in such a manner) is very one-sided. In the last 75 years, Israel has been the opposite of innocent or peace-searching, and Palestianians do not wish for a jew-free land - the majoritiy merely wishes for their rightful land. The land that they had been living in for hundreds of years before zionists demanded it, for human rights and for peace. "From the river to the sea" is a chant yearning for the freedom from their opressors (which Israel has been, if you consider that they have been forcibly occupying land that wasn't rightfully theirs - the rightfulness of which can be debated as well, if you look at how those borders between Palestine and Israel came to be). From human to human, and I mean this in no hateful manner, please educate yourself on both sides of a story. If you were actually a part of this conflict, or any conflict, you would wish for others to hear your voice, too, and that is the least you can do: hear all voices, not just the ones that suit your narrative.

Thank you for this conversation. As a Muslim Canadian and American citizen, I needed to hear this. We are more similar than different. I hold no hate or I’ll will for my Jewish cousins, but the brutality of the Israeli government enraged me!
The "clutching of pearls" for the Little Mermaid "scandle" really cracked me up. People were up in arms because Ariel was going to be played by a black woman, and that wasn't the "correct" or "realistic" depiction of the original, fictional CARTOON MERMAID. For goodness sakes, let anyone and everyone be a cartoon mermaid- it's going to be okay.
Disney version was not much like original either, was it? I think I remember the Little Mermaid having blondish greenish tinted hair. I know in Slavic Folklore (I am part Russian), our Mermaid/Siren kind of creature is called a Rusalka and it have blondish green hair too. And sometimes a greenish colored skin. (Kind of like a water goblin of sorts lol). Or maybe I am confusing Hans/Germanic version with the Slavic version but I could have sworn I thought I read the description was similar when I read the original. I could be wrong though. It's been decades. lol
I think there is nothing wrong about a woman looking for love - and that alone is very much different than it used to be 80 years ago. Women nowadays do not look for a provider, but for a partner. Though in a fairy tale set hundreds of years ago, this may be different - but in most of the Disney original fairy tales, the princes did not play such a big role, and the princesses always had other problems then finding a prince. Snow White was a refugee who was trying to find a new place in life. But even if you have another purpose in life, finding love is something that is very human. I myself was looking for love for decades, and though I did not fall in love very often, not getting it was enough for 2 attempts to end my life, and years of depression. No job I did not get had such an emotional impact on me. And it is not just women looking for love - and suffereing when they don't get it, one of my cousins did end his life after his wife left him. Love is a very powerful drive in many people's lives, therefore I don't understand why stories have to be re-written to exclude it. And though the Little Mermaid is not a role model, I could very much identify with her. I did stupid things to be near to the guy I loved. I also don't get why women in modern movies always have to fight and be violent. What's wrong with the stereotypical kind and caring woman? Why does she have to become violent and aggressive -like the tereotypical man? I don't think it is feminism if women want to be like men. Feminism is, when women are accepted the way they are and traditionally feminine traits are no longer ridiculed. But this is not happening, unfortunately. Women act as violent and aggressivbe as men, and what happens when people act violent and aggressive - we all can see that in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. This would certainly not have happened if both sides had acted kind and caring - like stereotypical women. Not all women are stereotypical women and not all men are stereotypical men. I think there is at least a bit of both stereotypes in all of us. But the kind and caring person should be what we aim for, what we present as a hero in our movies and in life, and not the person who acts violent. And I hate, that lots of movies these day, and an increasing number of movies for children only offer violence as the solution to all problems. I see the marketing campaign for the new Disney movie Wish, and already it seems to me that the solution to the villain problem is that a diverse group of people comes together to fight. I'm happy with the diverse group of people, but I am not happy with the fighting part.
I don’t know if you will see this, but please consider speaking to Israeli Jews, Mizrahi Jews, Israeli arabs and Palestinians. They are much closer to the conflict and actually live it. Only listening to a western ashkenazi Jew really limits your understanding.
Rebecca can you do a deep dive on racism issues within feminism? “Against White Feminism” by Rafia Zakaria was an interesting ready for me. I’m very much a feminist but I also know that we can do so much better!
Part of the issue is we are all using words to describe something different; there's no way in that to have successful communication. When I first started hearing the term 'woke' it was in a spiritual context as my awakening was spiritual and had nothing to do with my education. When the left took over the term to describe things like the idea that men and woman are biologically exactly the same, confusion is a good thing, white people should be treated poorly, etc... we started saying 'awake' instead to describe being spiritually aware and worldly aware of truth. On the disney note, I decided as an adult that I distained disney because growing up watching those movies gave me the impression that love at first sight is to be trusted and having a relationship is the key to happiness. I just regret it took me until I was in my late 30s to realize this isn't the case. Now I hate the way those movies act like it's not important to get to know someone at all before marriage and woman need a man to save them. I like what the new snow white had to say. I didn't see Barbie but one thing that bothers me is the smashing of the baby dolls, not sure what it's supposed to symbolize but as a mother I really hope it's not to disparage young woman from having children. Nothing wrong if that's not what someone wants but you do miss out on a big part of life, imo, if you don't have children and the only real way to experience unconditional love in life.
I am a Jewish Israeli who moved to Canada in hopes to escape the war, to now face antiemetism and terror just like my family did all throughout history, just for being Jewish. I do not agree with everything the Israeli government does and how they are operating. I do not agree with illigal settlements in Palestinian territories. But Israel is a democracy where we are allowed to protest and vote for change. Palestinians can't. They voted for Hamas in 2006 and that was it. Anyone protesting and reporting against their regime - dies. I stand for Israel's right to exist and defend its people. I dream for peace, a 2-state solution, but that means Palestinian leaders need to finally agree to a partition plan and to maintaining peace which they never did. And yes, I do believe that Jews need a land to escape to if antiemetism continues and grows around the world like it does today. And my family has the right to age in their own homes just like anyone else, if theres actually anything left of their homes from all the rocket fires coming from Hizbollah and Hamas. The IDF was literally designed to defend, never offend. Since Oct 7, Hamas didn't stop firing rockets, even when they get windows of cease fire, and they continuously pledge to never stop the blood shed of Jews and Israeli (which includes Palestinian-Israelis as they see them as traitors) until they take all this land and kill every Jew left and democratic values. Hamas does not hide their agenda like Hiter did. They only want to erase Israel and they are not willing to compromise. So what dialogue are you talking about? We have to remember who Israel is up against - a terrorist organization that is self-serving that steals, kills and opresses its own people. They have zero regard to any life. And I do believe they must be stopped. My heart is big enough to be hurting for all the loss, on both sides. But from my experience I can't say the same about Pro-Palestinians and their supporters. Their empathy is for only one side. Sadly, you can never have peace if one side doesn't want it (Hamas and those who elected them). So then what is Israel supposed to do? Cease fire and let them continue what they started on Oct 7? Its like commiting suicide. What's the solution? One that doesn't include the annihilation of all Jews from the land. There are 0 Jews living in Gaza, yet there is 2 million non-Jewish Arabs (Palestinians) living in Israel, with equal rights who can fully participate in society. They too, agree on this matter, that they don't want Hamas to over-rule Israel. Because all the women, LGBTQ people and many more know that all their rights will be stripped immediately. The Israeli government has the power to simply air strike Gaza and Hamas and end this thread once and for all but they dont do it. They risk their own soldiers to protect innocent Palestines in Gaza. They are doing everything they can to minimize casualties but yes, in wars, a lot of people die and its sad. Its really sad. Its a war we never wanted and did not start. Its a war on Hamas, not Palestinians. Yesterday Hamas released another video of them decapitating an 18 year old hostage. And a pregnant women gave birth in the underground tunnels. Where is the outrage for them? Rebecca is entitled to her opinion but I disagree. I used to think like her, I really did. Until the October 7th attacks and the world's reaction.
Israel was created to serve as a United States proxy so they could continue exerting military and economic coercion over the middle east. Your homeland should not come at the expense of innocent people's homes and lives. And do you really think Hamas was elected through a fair election? Meanwhile, Israel elected a far-right government via your proud democracy.
@MrBlle9 First of all, Israel hasn't been occupying Gaza since 2005. They pulled every single Jew out of there in an attempt to give the Palestinians sovereignty. Secondly, how do you know that Israelis didn't protest? Just a few months ago, we had country-wide protests of thousands of civilians standing against the government and calling for democratic change. Look it up for yourself. Palestinians voted for Hamas over PLO in 2006 and ever since then, they have not held re-elections for clear reasons. Everyone is suffering from Hamas's terror, including Palestinians, if not even more. I've been crying for innocent lives lost on all sides since I was a child living in that environment. So assuming I "only" cry when my people die is for you to reflect on. And regarding your last point, there are good and bad people everywhere. Jews are not exempt from it. You are right that some soldiers mistreat Palestinians. Sometimes, these young 18-20 year olds have trauma that goes so very deep that they hurt others. They lack the awareness that they are hurting and afraid, they are in survival mode, and thus they can be reactive. But this behaviour goes against all our values and rules of conduct. These actions do not represent Israel or the IDF as a whole. and yes, these people need to be held accountable. But please do not generalize saying all soldiers do that. It's simply a lie. And trust me, I have seen the outrage. I have seen Israelis stand against this behaviour time and time again.
@MrBlle9israel has left gaza in 2005. We have forced 8000 Jewish people out of their homes (mind you, there is evidence of Jewish life in gaza from before Islam existed) There are 0 jews in gaza from 2005. There is no occupation there. What did we get in return? Constant rocket fire, that we are so used to as part of life. Terror tunnels that reach beneath israeli homes. They could pf build a Singapore. Instead they elected nazis to govern them (look up hamas charter). Take some accountability.

Thank you Dr Kirk for calling out his guest on not watching a video about women health just because it was men talking without checking whether they were physicians qualified to speak on the subject. This is why I've been distancing myself from feminist, because many say they want one thing, but in reality is just men hating hypocrites and doing exactly what men were doing to women, dismissing them regardless of credentials. We should be focusing on what someone actually knows/can do or whatever. Not their gender. I love how the guest immediately dodged the questions on "woke" people who got so far into the movement that they start oppressing others and steered the conversation elsewhere. I also love how she completely skipped over the question on a POC playing a character that is actually white by character design, and started talking about Little Mermaid instead, where the race does not define the character. Disappointed in Dr Kirk for cutting out the part were Rachel Zeigler cutting out the more problematic parts of her statements. Also, for not including how RZ criticized race switching POC characters to white, when she herself takes on a role that switches race. I totally agree that more new characters of diversity should be CREATED. I just don't agree on appropriations of existing characters. To me, it feels like we dont deserve to have our own, genuine diversed characters, but can only appropriate from existing white characters.
It was too far one way before now it's too far the other way. Snow white original fairy tail says she has skin as white as snow. I have nothing against that female being an actor. Her skin is not matching the original description. That's where I say it's too far the other way. It's not about her being the wrong race it's about her being cast for the wrong movie. IMO

@mash1991 I don't quite get what you mean here by 'the narrative currently spreading online.' Depending on your echo chambers or site algorithms, what may be the narrative being parroted from one person's internet experience may be different for another person. And yeah of course he would be careful about the way he talks about psychology info on the internet, because that's literally his job and expertise. Aside from a few political and social issues where he's unabashedly opinionated on like climate change, I actually feel he's almost painstakingly careful to not repeat commonly parroted narratives from either side. If he doesn't have a guest on to talk about them, he talks about a lot of those issues from a psychological perspective, which whether you like it or not is the foundation for a lot of the human behavior that plays out in these social and political issues. It's incredibly important right now and often overlooked in a political climate where issues are often viewed from a black and white, good vs. evil dichotomy. Unfortunately this also subjects him to criticisms from both sides who get upset because he didn't get all his 'facts' right.

@mindlander it actually is true. But I have no interest in arguing with people in the comments, so this will be my only response.
33:25 Excellent point, Dr. Honda. There's a lot of fatigue now with these movements, and a lot of it comes from those types of scenarios/attitudes.
Dr.H, I would love to hear your take on the “Letter to America” by Osama Bin Laden.
Is the episode on Palestine and Israel on Patreon only or is it also on your RUclips channel? Thanks.
Is anyone else utterly tickled by Dr Kirk’s reaction to Dr Rebecca saying she gets ads for push up bras 😅😊
“Push up bra? For what purpose?

I strongly feel that neither entity (Israeli or Palestinian) can exists without mutual acknowledgement, recognition and respect of and for the mutual humanity. What scares me the most are the all or nothing extremist views on both ends. 💔
@@missrudy8553 That is absolutely not true at all. Israel has never reached for peace and they colonized and occupied Palestinian land and took their homes and forced them to flee... It's in the historical record.
@@Gokce-AysunYou are wrong. Before Israel was even created, the arabs were offered half the land and they refused. Then, Israel offered a 2 state solution over 10 times and the arabs refused. The word "liberal" is now used the same way as "woke" by both sides of the "argument". The correct word to use is "leftist" or "anti-imperialist" not "liberal". It is all very confusing. To me, "anti-woke" is a definite pejorative.

Thank you for this conversation. As a Muslim Canadian and American citizen, I needed to hear this. We are more similar than different. I hold no hate or I’ll will for my Jewish cousins, but the brutality of the Israeli government enraged me!
Thank you so much for your video regarding Israel and Palestine. Much love to you both!
Stay safe❤❤ come back to Israel sister❤
Thank you for saying all this and putting this perspective into words so well, I've been thinking and feeling the same things.
We have forced 8000 Jewish people out of their homes (mind you, there is evidence of Jewish life in gaza from before Islam existed)
There are 0 jews in gaza from 2005.
There is no occupation there.
What did we get in return?
Constant rocket fire, that we are so used to as part of life.
Terror tunnels that reach beneath israeli homes.
They could pf build a Singapore. Instead they elected nazis to govern them (look up hamas charter).
Take some accountability.
You don’t know where mermaid folklore comes from. That’s not surprising of American and Canadians tbh. Look into that friends. That’s why people were mad.
If you want more diverse characters created, do it. Don't expect white guys to do it for you.
IMO

Sadly you are correct. Dr. Kirk is always very careful with “social media” type of information about psychology, but not when it comes to politics and human rights where he just repeats the narrative that’s currently spreading online.
and have you address the 75 yr occupation Israel has had over the Palestinian people? while the acts of October 7th were horrific, they would not have happened in the first place if israel wasn’t an oppressive state over palestine. there’s much to learn. start in 1948 and see what you find out.
Will this be another disappointment on Dr. Honda's side? I wonder... 😪
