  • *PLEASE READ: It has been brought to my attention that the keeping of medaka rice fish outside in the UK may NOT be legal. And unfortunately, from doing some more research, it appears that to keep non-native fish outside in the UK, they must be on a “white list” of approved fish, for example goldfish are on this list. Medaka unfortunately though, are not. It would be nice if the Rice Fish was at some point added to the list though, as surely they pose way less of a risk to native habitat destruction, when compared to fish such as goldfish and koi. But for the time being, I think they will need to be kept indoors. If anyone has any further info on this though, please let me know! And apologies for not doing as much research as I should have, before adding them to my pond. They have now been removed*.

    In this video I finish off the DIY Patio Pond, and even add the first few fish! Hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching!

    *Hey all, since posting this video I have been informed that keeping Medaka (Japanese Rice Fish) outdoors in the UK may well be illegal 😬 so they have now obviously been removed from the pond, and taken back inside. Please check description for more details. Thanks, and apologies, I should have done more research prior to adding them to the pond.*

      Hi pal, have you found out the exact laws for fish here in the UK. I was literally about to do this over the next few weeks! 😳

      @@robertevans2380 Hi mate, I’m still not 100% sure. But i recently watched a video by Fish Shop Mat, in which he made a small pond for goldfish, and in the comments a lot of people were saying he should try Medaka, and he relied saying that they were illegal to keep outside in the UK. An alternative could be Golden White Clouds, but I’m not sure if they are even legal to keep outdoors, because the research I did seems to say that it is illegal to keep all non-native fish outdoors unless it’s on this pre-approved white list. And I didn’t see white clouds on there. I could be wrong, it’s really hard to find any good info on it.. I’ve been looking into sticklebacks, seem like a cool little fish, and obviously native.. I’ve got a bit more research to do yet, but they could be a possibility.

      @GingerFishyOfficial , I personally have Japanese friend and also friends who are from Thailand and they have doing it for years! 🤷
      I already have a native style paludarium with 3 spined stickelbacks and a couple of palmate newts in it. ( I caught them myself in a fish trap bass fishing productions or robs aquatics style fishing) IV had them about 6 months and had great success. Stickelbacks recently even showed spawning behaviour.
      I think I better research some more too then. I seen @fishshopmatt video you spoke of too.
      Great content by the way pal. I'm a new subscriber.

    I would suggest a small overflow hole with a small piece of screen glued on for when it rains.The screen so you won't lose your fish.

    I was looking how to build a small bog for my 300 gal rubbermaid tank that sits above ground on the inside of my screened enclosure with 2 koi and 1 pleco. I didn't know how I was going to build a bog filter for it, until I saw your video's explaining everything in detail as you went along. You've inspired me and surely inspired many in this hobby! Looking good ! I did try to wrap mine in split bamboo but it didn't end well ! Looks like the reed ? you used is the way to go.
    Are you planning on leaving the rice fish out all year ? I was thinking of trying it (south coast UK )

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  Год назад +1

      Thank you! Yeah, the bamboo was not the easiest to work with… 😫 I don’t think the shape of the planters helped though.. Yeah, I think I am going to leave the rice fish out all year, I’ve not done it before, but it seems to be pretty common practice. I don’t know if you watch Ryo Watanabe, but he’s done a few videos on his rice fish ponds and how they stay out all winter, surviving under the ice no problem. I am going to put a lid on the pond though, to help keep a bit of heat in! Thanks for watching! 😊

    Nice video, how do you prevent overflow in a rainstorm?

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  Год назад

      Thank you! To be honest it must just overflow.. it doesn’t seem to cause a problem though.. I don’t think I’ve lost any fish. Ideally I would have put a small hole somewhere near the top of the planter, which would set the water level and help prevent overflows.. but unfortunately because of this particular planter, the rim is hollow, so I don’t think it would have worked.. But yeah, I don’t think it seems to really cause a problem! 🤞😊

      The plants great!! Have you decided what fish your going for? You could always add a flow regulator if your finding the pump a bit too powerful!

    • @hawkheights6953
      @hawkheights6953 Год назад

      @@GingerFishyOfficial I did have white cloud mountain minnows and may do the same or get 1 goldfish. I need it to cycle for a few weeks first. I did think about the flow regulator but wondered if that would cause an issue with the pump being restricted flow. One suggestion I got told was to add a tee in the line and divert some of the outflow before it goes to the bog, direct back into the pond. They are very cheap, so an option to try.
