These and the Camaros were awesome. We've owned a few of them. My brother had a Red 88. There's a video of it on my channel. 350 tpi with a Positrac rear axle. True duals. Mostly stock, but It would burn rubber !!! 🔥💨💨💨 😎
Can't believe for the GTAs and even the Camaro IROCs they only did autos... Shame they didn't have a stick option. Obviously you can get a conversion but still...
A 5.7 liter (350 cubic inch) L98 was only offered with an automatic transmission. This applied to Formula Firebirds, Trans Ams and GTAs. You could special order a 5 speed car with the 5.0 liter (305) RPO- L9. In other words a 5.7/5speed does not exist from the factory. They even discouraged ordering T- tops on 350 cars, but they do exist. A truly awesome GTA of this era was a 1989 RPO LC- 2/3.8 V6 Turbo 20th Anniversary GTA Pace Car. Only 1,555 were produced. I drove my local dealership crazy trying to obtain one of these cars. I offered my immaculate 1987 Formula 350 as a down payment and I still could not obtain one. I wanted to see a 4.3 V6 Turbo with all wheel drive like a Cyclone or Typhoon in a Firebird TA. It makes me wonder what the hell GM was trying to accomplish wasting that powertrain on a fucking toy truck when the Flagship GTA and IROC needed a fresh and new Turbo Intercooled AWD car to compete with Mustang Cobras, Toyota Supra Turbos, Mazda RX- 7 Turbos and 300 ZX Turbos. The powers that be gave us an AWD S10 that was worthless as a truck and was just plain weird. It was this bunch of idiots that produced the 4th gen Plastic Junk and then just threw in the towel in 2002 and gave the market for American sports cars to Ford fucking Mustangs.
Snowman3g the 350L98 came automatic with a 700R4 trans not sure if the rear was 373 or not but yea L98 350 TPI no T-Tops or manual Trans this guy said he swapped the Auto for a manual because the manual trans was an L98 305 TPI it was a manual 5speed the car also had T-Tops and there was a digital Cluster option for the dash which I prefer because if you have ever driven one on good summer night on some dark roads that digital Dash looked sick awesome car I love these GTAs
I think GM told the story that the manual transmission (a T5) wouldn't take the torque of the 350 very well. In the 30 years since then I've seen a few cars for sale where they replaced the 305 with a 350 in a manual car, or installed a manual transmission in a car that came with a 350. Apparently the 5-speed can actually last a while behind a 350 TPI engine.
I got a 1988 Trans Am black with black interior and the 350TPI no t-tops and the digital dash also factory SLP package,Ws6 car and factory Borg Warner rear end
yes, the 350 tpi T/A & cameras never had an official 5 speed manual option from the factory. however I've heard of dealerships and special orders and conversions done to them, not only in later years, but right after when new. people don't realize how personalized and accessorized these always have been.
BEAUTIFUL!!! Do you still have the original trans, linkage, & wheels & tire's? & all the bushings for the transmission linkage? I would have wanted every single stock piece back when & if I ever modified that car like u did!!! I bet it helped the performance a bit? tho, it seems to me that, with the speedo running to fast, it would be racking up the mileage??? id get those wheels off of it asap if so!!! beautiful car bro!!!
D.j. B thanks. I sold it 3 years ago to an Atlanta judge, of all people, lol. I had the orig. Wheels in storage. I loved the car, but I have 3 kids! Hard to hide favortism when I have to leave one at the curb in addition to my wife, haha!
@@ericschmidt3098 Japanese Wheel Alloys, who made the original wheels, now make them in a 17×9. I have a set on my 87 GTA, they look Badass! Has the wide lip front and rear! I run BFGoodrich G-force 275/40's all the way around it. Have Texas Speed suspension and Koni's, subframe connectors and a 9" Moser 32 spline axles and 3.73 gear's. LS and T-56 going in it next. Gonna be one hell of a sleeper!! Love your car! Mine's White with tan interior. I have a black 90 model also. I'm leaving in virgin though.
@@ericschmidt3098 Why do people find it relevant to mention what other people do for work? Just watched two other videos that mention a surgeon and a firefighter that bought thirdgens from the video posters. Who cares? People post these things as if to suggest it's somehow odd or special that someone of certain success and/or influence bought their car, but it's simply irrelevant.
It came with 230 or 240hp, and you can modify it to 300hp. If you pay attention to the video, this car has headers and an SLP intake manifold. Back in 1992 you could order it from the dealer with SLP manifold and headers and it was rated at 266hp. That was without even changing the cam. Here, the narrator says it idles the way it does because of the aftermarket cam.
Marcus Russell You'd disagree if I put the mint stock gold wheels back on. It was a beautiful car. I kept it's integrity solid. These cars are fun to drive and should be driven. Museum was not my gig.
This guy sounds like a broker and you we all know what they're about by car that's a nice from a private owner kick the shit out of it for a while and then resell it as though it's something substantial meanwhile the next owner gets the car and ends up fixing up with the broker fucked up and this guy definitely isn't showing any pride in it he's just out to make a quick buck typical testosterone jockey
idiot.who wants to drive these around stock.the automatics suck cock, everything that was done can be easily un done and improves the joy of driving the car.
5 speed conversion aftermarket cam sounds and runs perfect PERIOD.
'88 T/A GTA w/ TPI & 5 speed MT. beautiful combo

Nice ride! The wheels go with this bird quite well!!!
Nice Pontiac Trans Am. It reminds me of KITT from Knight Rider.
I love that T/A. Reminds me of my youth.

Love this car! Tastefully done too!like this body of t/a the best.
well this is the ultimate 3rd gen TA. I'm thinking about swapping my 1992 5.0TPI 5 speed Formula for a 5.7. Man I love these cars.

That motor sounds menacing. Like it’s a dragon breathing. Deeply. Nice very nice.
Really nice car! So many people jack up these american cars at the wrong place.
what?
Unless you swapped out motors I believe GM did not make the 5.7 in a manual transmission they were only available with the automatic transmission.
Dream car. Awesome job on it man. Sounds so awesome and I love the wheels!
🔥💨💨💨👍😎
My dream car is 69 ss Chevelle. But this one is too nice.
Finally a gen 3 Trans Am with a black interior -winning!
WOW that sounds beautiful
That strut bar was a crazy improvement I bet.
I hear it idling rough after some time my 305 sounded just like it it was the fuel pump but I might be wrong since you said it was cammed?
Wish I was paying attention 6yrs ago
I did that once and I blowed away my phone too 😂😂😂😂
All I can say is, GORGEOUS Just simply gorgeous. But if it had the T - Tops the merrier. 👍🏻✌🏻
5sp conversion, SWEEEEET!
That's a real winner right there
Id love to have that car but i wish u didnt change the rims

Got the slp runners!! Why is the car surging? That's not normal
Quincy Allen it's the cam ! It's normal for aftermarket cam, if it didn't do that I'd wonder if a cam was even upgraded
It's the throttle body positioning sensor

Just a quick question bro any idea where I can order a new hood for a 1986 Pontiac Firebird??
Scrap/junk yard
3rdgen.com

Very nice car. 👍👍 what is the Prince??
Thats a nice car bro!!

Do you miss it yet? I know I would!!
🇺🇲👏👏👏
Nice job with the car. The haters here are just jealous keyboard warriors
did you ever sell your car? that car kicks azz
fortnoxz71 I did...sorry to let you down...
Is this still available?
Mike Suscello sorry, sold it shortly after the video for asking price.
Liked these cars alot, but I'll be the first one to tell you the third Generations had the worst exhaust systems on them
the tpi cars especially with the n10 dual cat option were good.
I thought only 305 has standard not 350's hum.
You are correct. It was an auto 350 converted to stick.
Pay attention next time dik wad

Whoa!
you said it was black and gold, what gold?
Gold emblems and wheels were stock...
Ernie P It was the GTA With gold wheels and accents. The wheels were mint and were in storage.
It is not a factory 5-7 if it is a stick shift they did not make a 5-7 stick shift GTA
Get dizzy watching this video
Wat is money
U should run amsoil signature series
It needs new exhaust
Bobby Stevens I didn't like it either.
sick car but sounds weird
A lot of power???Try 300hp if ya lucky and runs like crap you can hear it surging bad.... worn out 5.7....
WrongWay try again, way wrong....the 350 L98 had roughly 230 hp
It came with 230 or 240hp, and you can modify it to 300hp.

WrongWay watch test drive video. Cam was very active on this car. Had to set higher idle. No issues on the road.
It's an 88, and isn't stock, calm down. Older cars don't make much compared to new ones
idiot, understand what cams with a lot of duration do when idling, thanks.

Had too be the worst video I ever watched with the jumping around of the camera or phone.
