Great video, spot on. I'd like to add that most of the time it's better to apply noise reduction to just the shadows, not the whole image. A quick way to do that is to use a luminance qualifier to grab the dark areas of the frame that are noisy and apply the noise reduction to clean them up. This way you don't affect the areas of the image that don't need it.
OH MY GOODNESS! This was an insanely pleasant breath of fresh air! SO clear, concise, and calm. Sub-freaking-scribed. Perfection. I wish all tutorials were like this!

Simplely explained and straight to the point - thanks for this. Would love to see a video about film grain, especially where to place it in the node structure 😊!
Thanks Brian, that's a great idea for a future video. In the meantime, we talk about grain in our Bleach Bypass video ruclips.net/video/1yZFPzo6su8/видео.html We will do a dedicated video on the effect, but for the time being the here's a simple answer: Put grain as the last node.
Excellent video, so clear and precise and exactly what i needed to know. I have only just discovered noise reduction in Davinci and its a game changer... and that cache option is awesome... I purchased the M1 Mac Studio Ultra with all the bells and whistles and the noise reduction brought it to its knees... lol Great work, awesome video :-)
Hi Natalie! Great video. Chroma noise is truly unpleasant. For years, I've shot in on Blackmagic cameras (the original, 4k and 6k), and that noise on raw footage has always driven me crazy. DaVinci Resolve's noise reduction tools are effective, but on high ISOs they can blur all the details and yet not remove the chroma noise, as you showed on the video. I've been studying and experimenting with a new approach that focuses on preserving image details while reducing chroma noise on heavily noisy images. I've discovered that with a combination of Resolve's tools and a custom-made DCTL, it's possible to transform chroma noise into a film-like texture. Works perfectly in the workflow on the video. It also removes some compression artifacts! I'd like to send it to you to try out the powergrades.
i tried and tried tried. neevr felt fully satisfied. in the end gave up on the native nr tool and got neat nr. its awesome i can scrub the timeline, it renders to cache faster but i keep the node off most of the time tho unless when its time to render. neat has auto profile so nr is taken care of in 3 clicks.
Great tutorial, however i still don't know when to use temporal or spatial NR. For my understanding, these are two different approaches (analysing movement vs analysing density of contrast/textures) of identifying noise but getting the same results. Since you said a combination of both might be the best way to deal with noise, I wonder if there are instances, where only one technique is better. And I believe you haven't mentioned in what way the radius in spatial NR affects the result. Glad you're there, please keep up the good work!
Temporal noise reduction is better on shots with no movement or predictable movement. It usually preserves details better than spatial noise reduction. Spatial noise reduction can degrade details in images more easily. We tend to use on images with lots of movement where temporal noise reduction produces too many artefacts. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I hope those answers helped.
Great simple and to the point. I've always been putting the NR as the last node. One thing you didn't mention though was the motion slider. I still don't quite know what this does.
@@ArcanePath360 it's in the same panel because you might need to recover the sharpness of your image with this tool by reducing the blur (in another node, placed after)
Really great succinct video. Glad you used an astro clip as an example as this is the sort of thing I shoot often. There is no way I can add light to these sort of scenes and shadow noise is significant. Just as you demonstrated, a heavy handed NR approach produces muddy looking footage. What's the best way to clean up these light starved scenes when increasing acquisition exposure isn't an option and Resolve NR smears out much of the detail? Just use curves to crush the shadows out a bit?
Yeah, that can work. There are other noise reduction plugins you can try too. Temporal noise reduction is best for preserving details. Neat Noise gives excellent results. It's a paid download though. Thanks for watching, great to have you here.
Hehehe. We’re glad it’s helpful. Make sure they expose to the right next time (or whatever issue they had) 😂🤣. Glad the videos are helpful and thanks for leaving a comment.
This vid saved my shot movie, because I always tried out the wrong parameters for NR. But one question: Any suggested parameters for motion range and radius? (I hope I didn't miss that)
Hello! It's difficult to make blanket recommendations on those settings because it depends on the amount of motion you have in your footage. You'll want more moderate settings if you have lot's of motion to prevent unwanted artefacts.
@@team2films unrelated question. I self record play duduk instrument. Suggestions where to mic instrument? Also more important how to edit the sound better? Similar to voices I want my sound be full bodied
Temporal generally does a better job of preserving image details, but it doesn't work well on images with lot's of motion, especially if the motion is unpredictable. Spatial is better on clips with lot's of motion. It's easier to destroy fine detail in an image too. We usually favour temporal noise reduction over spatial. There's a new type in the latest version of Resolve. UltraNR is an AI driven type of spatial noise reduction, and it does a much better job! It's more computationally intensive though.
