It's not a bad riff. It's just too busy for what the section calls for. James simplifying it was the right thing to do. The original version I could hear as a standalone riff that ramps into a vocal section, like you hear in several songs on Justice.

Maybe they could have left this in for one verse. I can see why they took it out- it's "too busy"- but after hearing what was left in literally hundreds of times, the variety in this version sounds really cool.
I love it! Sounds really cool and fresh, ahead of its time. I can totally see it on a, say, Trivium song 20 years later. They (Trivium) should have used it in their cover version, it would’ve been absolutely perfect there.
I know I'm not one to talk because all of my guitar videos are shitty cuz I'm lazy among other things but this is a perfect example of overdoing it. Sometimes you need what's just right, sometimes you need to throw in a lil extra. It's all about finding a balance yo
Every guitarist knows this: writing parts that are interesting but "too busy" for the song is perhaps the most painful obstacle to overcome if songwriting with a band. Making guitar parts interesting but not going over "that line" is so, so difficult. Metallica were simply masters of this, hence why they were the most successful thrash band. Kirk (and I guess the band) electing to remove this part is an example of this....a lot of bands would have just kept it in "because it sounds cool", which -- if they did it on all their songs -- would have likely have dented their overall success.
It's kind of funny to me, when you listen to the stuff Kirk does today it's like he's done a completely 180 and instead of overcomplicating things now he's afraid that he's going to play too much.
That little round at 0:16 is soooooooo cool Wish they would use it in final version Sound kinda off but somehow almost perfectly fits Hets lines and has great trash feeling
Most of the busyness comes from how this video is mixed. If the guitar was turned down more it would feel less busy. Either way the final simpler version does sit a bit better in the mix.
I think it would work if they played it once then just played the rest of the section how it appeared on the album. It just sounds too busy otherwise, like the original Unforgiven solo.
It's pretty cleary a riff written to not have vocals over the top. If they ran through the bridge section twice, the first time could be no vocals and they busier riff. But Metallica are already writing songs that are too long and already jamming them full of so many riffs that there is just no space for this stuff.
It's not a bad riff. It's just too busy for what the section calls for. James simplifying it was the right thing to do. The original version I could hear as a standalone riff that ramps into a vocal section, like you hear in several songs on Justice.

Pretty cool and interesting to listen to. I like his riff, but It doesn't serve the dense Wall of Sound structure❤
it is much better than the original riff, this song is so boring
Agreed, tight riff, but by simplyfying it let you listen to the lyrics. 👍👍👊👊

If this riff made it to the original you wouldn't think it was too much.

Kirks riff was more than likely made before the song was a thing. So it makes sense that this doesnt serve the part better than what it is now.
Which is funny, because Kirk usually has the more simplistic Riffs.

Going from the riff u expect to this, its like Kirk's being jabbed in the butt and the shock makes him play higher.
Thanks for including it!
That’s actually fucking awesome
Dude, I love this. Whether it's too much for that little bit, it just sounds badass
If it was released like that we would be used to it and and the other would seem strange.
That’s guitar tone though! 🔥
They could have alternated it with the album version once, Kirk's part once and both again to make the 4 bar cycle more interesting.

That's why you've heard it hundreds of times though. It's iconic the way it is. The busier riff would have detracted from it.

Compared to the insanely busy riffs today? It could have been left in before the solo or something. Fucking killer imo! Thanks for sharing ❤
tune to D and then its master of puppets if chuck schuldiner was in metallica
Tue, it has a lot of parts that could be a Chuck riff.
If would fit for a breakdown with this version somewhere late in the song, or refrain for final chorus. Would be a bit power-metally, but I like it!
That’s a sick riff dude!
