If it was just posting photos into the aether no one would do it. People only use their phones to take photos because they can get external validation for those photos

As a historian with an interest in the built environment, I found the idea of SecondLife interesting, even if the executions was not perfect. I think these products are better suited to education and training: you can show people places and processes in a 3D environment. I loved the idea of showing a place at different points in hisitory. But the barrier to SL was the system requirements. It needed a gaming computer when most of the target for educational uses had Chromebooks or productivity laptops capable of office software, not rendering virtual environments. So now Meta wants to add a more expensive piece of hardware that has even less use (I can at least still run Office on my gaming PC when it isn't doing more demanding stuff). My interest has turned to augmented reality to achieve the same goal using a smartphone since most people already have one capable of displaying an overlay on top of a camera image.
This title reminds me of a story involving a broken popcorn machine with a man standing in it. A Karen harassing the cashier for popcorn was asked by the guy in the popcorn machine if she was stupid.
I never bought into this Meta thingy idea. I love real life, real thing, real people. Yes it has its up and down and sometimes even deadly depends where you are, but I rather live in a real world where I can touch and feel the real thing, not in a Virtual world like Mr Zuck envisioned it.

The most galling thing about the metaverse is the way they try to act like it is in some way THE future hub for all virtual interactions as if they're the only people that get to try and work in that space. I avoid anything owned by Facebook, it's the only reason I never thought their virtual reality headset even when it was only 300 bucks.
If they want to do board meetings, then WhatsApp groups would be a good starting point. Add the ability to have group video calls there, much like MS Teams does.

The next big consumer revolution is AI. Having a personal assistant that can control every device you own-your electronics, your vehicle, your house, etc., and holds the knowledge of the world, and that you can turn to for help and for advice is going to change everything. VR/AR/MR will get better, but isn’t going to match the ubiquity of the smartphone anytime soon. I think it’ll work better for entertainment, like video games and movies/TV series that are shot with 360 cameras where you’re surrounded by the actors/characters and immersed in the scene will be a really cool experience. Hard to imagine these headsets becoming a part of the business environment though.
I really hope Meta fails and everyone realizes they have wasted so much of their lives plugged into social media for nothing! Where’s the no social media gang?! ✌️

I can Clearly See You have NOT experienced VR or AR. I have spent over $10k in VR Games and Applications. I do Not run into walls or pass through them, the sticks actually are fine to move around (once you get used to them) I actually play my Xbox in VR! (free app for that) I watch full size cinema movies which are so amazing its like being at the movies only better (free app is called Bigscreen, I like the DriveIn option where you sit in a car) VR and AR are going to keep improving. You did not even mention VR Omni Directional Treadmills for example, which shoots half your argument in the foot, (no pun intended) You also need to cover the Nreal AR glasses before you try and knock the upcoming AR experience down! What do I do when these are not accessible? Ablests' will say, Just use door dash or post mates. But there is no equity in that. Man you don’t even get what Metaverse is about, it’s still in very early stage of what it will be -> like in the movie Minority Report or Star Wars hologram. What Facebook is showing right now is just a template/ draft, they’re not investing billions on lego games. Hardware for this small wearable tech is still being engineered. Computers started as big as your room, now you have them in your pocket. Yes it could fail but this is not 3dtv were you just watch something.
This piece of template costs $15B with very little gain for such a huge business company and how likely will this template improve? Plus we are already alert to _a_ Metaverse's potential problems, and I mean major ones, while it's still in conceptual stage. You should probably take a look at their job-avatar version. It looks surprisingly good. Obviously everyone want the tony stark ar glasses, companies need to invest in it beforehand in order for the tech to ever reach that level. Honestly I think the metaverse will be pretty big and I imagine people had this same take when the iPhone came out.

Most ppl paying attention to the iPhone in ‘07 were not just impressed by what it was but also the potential for what it could be even w/ contemporary perceptions of its price (which seem comical by today’s standards) & the limitations of its tech, network, & those imposed by /Steve (ie. Safari tabs are where you’ll run apps). And if you weren’t quite sure from the keynote, ppl sure as hell were once they actually got their hands on one. Plus you could put it in front of a 2yr old or your Grandmother & they would get it too. RIM wasn’t paying attention & disappeared like a fart in the wind. The devs & even the average consumer’s imagination were way down the road map from launch which made each successive keynote like getting your next fix. Tech U📺 has been chasing that high ever since. Go watch Steve’s keynote & compare it to Zuck talking about the metaverse & see which does a better job of explaining why you should care. The most charitable way of looking at the metaverse is if Second Life/MMOs are the II, Zuck’s metaverse is Windows 1.0 (not the Mac cuz it was vastly aesthetically superior & only like 10 ppl ever used Win1.0). Maybe an AR solution gets us to the Mac/Win3.1 & headed towards the web/html/Mosaic & something approaching a holodeck is a smartphone. Windows 1.0 was 1985. I’m hard pressed to see VR headsets being much more than an Altair 8800. I believe the ppl who report that VR is compelling, I just have no interest in buying one or strapping one to my face & losing all spatial awareness of the real world room I’m in for any relevant length of time. And if I’m not doing it for Vader Immortal or HL Alyx I sure as hell am not going to be convinced by whatever it is Zuck thinks he’s doing. Plus we are already alert to _a_ Metaverse's potential problems, and I mean major ones, while it's still in conceptual stage. Cyberbullying, scams and law enforcement are already headaches without metaverse and how severe can they be once your ideal metaverse is finally here?
Plus how in the end we are in a cyber metaverse getting spoon-fed by artificial sensations and what we call _online addiction_ in 2022 is the new norm. Touching grass is weirder than ever just like Wall-E's world. How scary is that...

Obviously everyone want the tony stark ar glasses, companies need to invest in it beforehand in order for the tech to ever reach that level. Honestly I think the metaverse will be pretty big and I imagine people had this same take when the iPhone came out.
If you have to imagine it then you must be pretty young cuz most of us remember it clear as day.
Most ppl paying attention to the iPhone in ‘07 were not just impressed by what it was but also the potential for what it could be even w/ contemporary perceptions of its price (which seem comical by today’s standards) & the limitations of its tech, network, & those imposed by /Steve (ie. Safari tabs are where you’ll run apps). And if you weren’t quite sure from the keynote, ppl sure as hell were once they actually got their hands on one. Plus you could put it in front of a 2yr old or your Grandmother & they would get it too. RIM wasn’t paying attention & disappeared like a fart in the wind.
The devs & even the average consumer’s imagination were way down the road map from launch which made each successive keynote like getting your next fix. Tech U📺 has been chasing that high ever since.
Go watch Steve’s keynote & compare it to Zuck talking about the metaverse & see which does a better job of explaining why you should care.
The most charitable way of looking at the metaverse is if Second Life/MMOs are the II, Zuck’s metaverse is Windows 1.0 (not the Mac cuz it was vastly aesthetically superior & only like 10 ppl ever used Win1.0). Maybe an AR solution gets us to the Mac/Win3.1 & headed towards the web/html/Mosaic & something approaching a holodeck is a smartphone. Windows 1.0 was 1985.
I’m hard pressed to see VR headsets being much more than an Altair 8800. I believe the ppl who report that VR is compelling, I just have no interest in buying one or strapping one to my face & losing all spatial awareness of the real world room I’m in for any relevant length of time. And if I’m not doing it for Vader Immortal or HL Alyx I sure as hell am not going to be convinced by whatever it is Zuck thinks he’s doing. Seems to me that the test market for a VR metaverse is the MMO community. If you can’t convince them en masse, it’s dead in the water.
