    I will cancel my Netflix account if they change their subscription business model. They have incrementally increased their fees every year it seems and at what point will people just get tired of this and leave Netflix all together. I’m close to getting there. Especially when they don’t have as good a selection as the competitors…just sayin…

      I really hope many people will leave too. It's ridiculous how these companies think they can add 3,4,5 $ and in the case of discovery + 10$. Especially in these times (they choose the wrong moment to up their prices as more people are watching their budget now so many won't be able to pay this much (more) for films and series).

    these streaming services are saving themselves a ton of money because they no longer have to give a cut to cable companies. The reality is that the industry is simply transitioning from cable to streaming platforms. No one wants to pay for 6 different streaming services so at some point, ISPs will have to include a bundle service and the end result will be no different than cable, expect for the fact that it is no longer tied to a literal cable: cable with streaming characteristics, if you will.

    I definitely feel “the golden age” of tv streaming, where you only had like 3 major streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, and later Amazon Prime), and they were all underneath that ~$10 threshold or cheaper, but also had MASSIVE amounts of content are 💯 a thing of the past. Looking back just 15 years ago to when I was still in high school, it was only millennials like myself who were pretty broke who decided to completely eschew traditionally cable and satellite TV bundles to just watch Netflix’s catalog off our PlayStations, Wiis, and Xbox 360’s when we did finally move out. I still remember Netflix sending our dorm room a physical disc to install the Netflix streaming app 😂
    Back then, every major studio seemed to just let Netflix have pretty much everything for rock bottom licensing fees not realizing what a goldmine streaming was to become and there were no “Netflix originals”. You wanted to watch Lord of the Rings, NBC’s The Office on repeat, Indiana Jones or Real Housewives? Netflix had it! Literally we all would just search Netflix first to find a movie or show we had in our mind. What a different world we now live in since the everyone and their mother has decided to cut their cords as well and everything is “fragmented”. Each studio wants to keep their most popular stuff EXCLUSIVE to their whatever platform, and you have to rely on “Originals” to draw you in (not that I’m complaining about originals, some are legitimate incredible production wise like HBO’s content!). That and every boomer my parents age now has also discovered the allure that is RUclips and are ‘experts’ on pretty much everything.

    The problem isn’t subscription services as a whole. It’s the fact that companies like Netflix never created alternative revenue sources so they are entire dependent on that service. Disney has their theme parks, merchandise and theatrical/ VoD releases. Because Netflix is so dependent on streaming revenue they raise prices, which allows everybody else to follow. You dissed TV+ when it came out but in hindsight it’s literally the best thing that has happened to the streaming market by focusing far more on quality over quantity, not raising prices and even if they did they would still be the cheapest option. Initially getting paid directly instead of getting a slice of the pie from the cable companies was good, but inevitably executives and shareholders are never satisfied with a particular profit margin and always want to see more and more growth. There a several ways to do that of course and 2 easy ones are raising the subscription price and getting money from advertisers who are always looking to get there product in front of more captive audiences. Drew - Do you think these streaming services are taking advantage of people canceling tv cable? This morning I canceled my cable tv. I’m using bunny ears and have an Apple TV. No subscriptions. I planned on adding a 5 dollar streaming service I was interested in. It seems that for about two decades cable tv was super popular but the last few years people are moving into the streaming age. I made this move to save some big bucks and will need to stick to this plan so I don’t incur a myriad of streaming costs. Thanks for the heads up. Love your channel.

    Advantage of streaming not mentioned is easily cancelling during times your fav shows are over/between seasons, etc. Netflix should check for any concurrent use. If there's concurrent use from different networks, it's sharing vs traveling.

    I’m in high school rn and once I go to college I feel like the only subscription I would use for TV would be Apple TV+ included in Apple One. I don’t watch TV or movies too much and apple one has News+, Fitness+, Apple Music, 2TB of iCloud storage, and since you can share it with 5 people I can just split the bill and only pay $6 a month. Not bad value in my opinion.

  • @imgranth
    @imgranth 2 года назад

    i mean the good part of streaming services is that you can pick and choose which services you want to subscribe to for that month, so say for example there's a new season of the morning show coming out on apple tv+, you could just subscribe for a month, and then cancel, and move on to a new service that has something you like. There's no hassle of dealing with cable companies to cancel a plan.

      I am afraid that streaming services will remove their monthly plans if enough people "shop around" and cancel services after paying for only a month. I wouldn't put the possibility past these media conglomerates whatsoever.

    It's funny you should mention 'traditional' comms companies (cable TV etc.) offering streaming services as part of their packages - cos that's exactly what's happened in the UK. Netflix is available as part of a package with both the main UK cable company (Virgin), the main UK satellite TV company (Sky) and the main UK telephone provider (BT). Apple TV+ (and soon the 'full Apple One' bundle) is available as part of a package with the largest UK mobile company (EE), Spotify, Amazon Prime, Discovery+ - they can all be included in your package with all the major comms companies. The actual subscription for the streaming service is always generally the 'lowest' tier though. For example, the main Satellite company, Sky TV, are moving away from 'dish based' broadcasting and into internet streaming broadcasting and have launched their own dedicated streaming TV - Sky Glass. That TV is 4k and if you buy a sub for it, it'll include Netflix - but only the base package (which doesn't include 4k content). So, if you want better quality, it's still worth just getting the 'basic' of basic packages with your internet/cable provider without these bundles and subscribing directly with them.

    Well with subscriptions you have to subscribe during the time period of whatever show you want to watch…then cancel it. You don’t have to have all the services all the time. And almost every quarter they offer free subscriptions for a period of time. When you cancel a subscription on Prime Video they automatically offer you a better deal to not cancel. And you can watch some new movies that are in the movie theaters. I still prefer subscriptions. I’m not sure where they will end up, but as for now they are great compared to cable companies.

    Nobody has been successfully able to find a viable business model for online streaming services.
    If people think someone is gonna "take down Netflix", think again. Not even Disney can make a profit from it and they own all the content ;-)
    It costs money to make quality content (and its associated distribution rights) and hosts tens of thousands of servers and CDNs. Replacing cable tv costs (customer pays $100/month) with online streaming (customer willing to pay about $10/month), isn't exactly a lucrative business model no matter how you want it to be profitable.
    This streaming business has been going on for over a decade ...

If you only want Paramount Plus and Peacock then you can do that. But even with all the price hikes Peacock, Netflix $15 plan, Paramount+, Hulu and Disney+ is only $40 combined. You can watch them anywhere on your mobile devices instead of just in your home. Things like HBO max don’t count because if you wanted HBO on cable then you were paying extra anyway.
