As you have said, once the 13 gets another price cut next year, to replace where the 12 is now, it will be too good value to pass up for a budget phone. A way they could try and counteract this, while also keeping the mini around for an extra year, is to move the mini down a place, and instead get rid of the 12 as expected, but also the 6.1” 13. Just some food for thought

This is a well studied pricing strategy that even has a paper published. This is primarily done with the ‘middle’ model of the lineup, so you ‘upgrade’ to the next one. It’s also another reason why apple has weird choices in their lineup. Like the Apple Watch Series 3 being around for so long. MKBHD made a video about this strategy with reference to the paper on his channel a while ago I think.
Car Manufacturers/Dealers have been pulling this same upsell routine for decades. "Oh no... you don't want that starving-lean LX Class.. you definitely belong in the SX Prestige model!!" 😃
What you described affected my purchasing decisions for 2 apple devices. My girlfriend was in dire need of an upgrade from an iPhone SE (2016) and so I already was sold on buying her a new iPhone so I felt like the iPhone 13 was the best value, especially with Veteran and Military pricing. Then I fell trap to the decoy effect in the opposite way lol. Apple was offering $100 gift card with the purchase of an iPad and $150 for a Mac. I was going to settle for the iPad Air M1 but then canceled the order and upgraded to the M1 iPad Pro. But it all worked out and I’m super happy with both. In total after discounts and taxes I spent about $1400 on the iPhone 13 and iPad Pro.

I’m very happy with my iPhone 14 1TB Deep Purple PRO MAX. However: I am 100% certain I will most likely skip iPhone, 15 and the iPhone 16 which will likely be the exact same phone only the 16 will have a revision. I will wait until probably iPhone 17/18 at hopefully by then they’ll have a 2 TB storage system.

I think the biggest problem with iPhone is that for many users it Pete with iPhone 6/6S/7 The people who needed a “phone” with a “big screen” probably stopped at the 6S because that had a headphone jack. People who were determined to get a phone that was water resistant probably stopped somewhere around the iPhone 7. Some may have even move to iPhone 8. But for many people, there’s nothing but diminishing returns, unless they are using their phone for professional, RUclips blogging. These phones have had 4K video for a long time. The only thing that keeps me coming back for more is the largest storage systems.

I was interested in the higher end Apple Watch, but I didn't like the rumors of the $999 price tag. Not sure why $799 is so different, but it's something I'm actually considering.

The ultra seems to be so specific that i don’t think it will cather to people who wants the series… the design and features are gathering to some people , making it less versatile than the series 8 (i don’t think the ultra will look good on people when they dress up for example, whereas the series can be configured with bands for each occasion)

Coming from the 11 pro max, I ordered the 14 pro max in space black with 256gb of storage. Can't wait to get it and and try out the cameras. I think next year when the 15 drops there might be a significant price increase for the 15 pro models. Hopefully not but I wouldn't be surprised if there is. There are many more aspects to these conversations that are usually overlooked. Just one example, when the products do not change drastically year-over-year, a non-pro user (or even some pro users) can just keep their phone for 3,4, or even 5 years until the spec upgrade justifies the switch. Funny enough, people understand this and Apple understand it as well. Stats show that the average age of iPhone at trade-in has increased to 3.5 years, which is a great news from consumer standpoint, environmental standpoint, and even Apple standpoint to build more long-term trust with their customers. Apple has the highest rate of returning customers (>92%) by a large margin in electronics section and it's not only because their customers have not understood that Apple wants them to spend more money!
I’m actually in dire need for a new iPad. I have an iPad 6 with 32gb and the storage is so full I can’t update it 😭😭 I’m hesitant to get one of the pro versions now because I don’t know if they’re going to release newer iPads this year. I’d hate to buy one and a month later they release new ones.

When I went to trade in my Mac to save money on my new one and they screwed it up and had to give me a giftcard; they didn’t even wanna give me it. Apple marketing dept us cheeky and sneaky. The item looks unmissable in their promotional material but when you use the item its really not an enormous difference from the last model. I feel that the world has gone mad about showing off with expensive devices in their hands. Definitely style over substance these days. 99% of the population don't need anything more than a basic smartphone with which to conduct their BASIC needs such as calling and texting. People were perfectly happy before smartphone phones arrived. They could still function and exist. This mentality has allowed companies like apple and Samsung to flourish. And in an era of high expense, these companies are just laughing at us all.

I definitely felt the decoy effect on my macbook pro purchase. Bought the 14 pro instead of the air. That being said, the I always bought the cheapest of the most expensive model. So I always felt that I was getting a decent value.
Apple’s decoy effect works every time 😭 even someone like myself who KNOWS that they do this still falls pray to this. I bought a 14 inch MBP in August. The new MacBook Air came out a few weeks before I went to buy the laptop, and so I strongly considered getting a highly speced Air to save money, especially since the design and features are quite similar to the pro line. I alllllmost bought it but by the time you spec it up, it’s very expensive. I just kept thinking “well the M1 Pro might last a little longer and be more powerful than the M2 long term, and it’s basically the same price”. So of course I bought the pro😅
Most series 7 are sold out. My sister got one for $330, now it’s sold out or going for same price as series 8(Best Buy) they also still have series 6 for $429. Would t surprise me if they still had series 5. Never understood why some stores refuse to lower prices. Just checked and yup they still have series 5 for full price. I had pre ordered an iPhone 14 pro max to replace my iPhone 11 because of the dynamic island and for the “it’s only $100 more” than the pro. Because my phone wouldn’t arrive until Oct 20th, I had time to think on it and ended up canceling my order due to the fact that I realized I was being manipulated and that the dynamic island would wear off after using it for awhile
dynamic island reminds me of 3d touch, I was excited about it on my iPhone 6s but I really didn't use it that often and was not big enough of a change to go from the 6 to 6s

You know, with every other smartphone bumping up in price due to the current round of inflation, the fact that the iPhone has held the line on prices (despite higher BoM costs) means that Apple is actually _discounting_ the iPhone (at least in the US). In other countries, price hikes are actually probably more due more to exchange rates and VATs than Apple price changes. Given the incredibly high inflation rate, I'd argue that you can probably get a 14 Pro model for pretty close to the same spend that you'd have put out last year for a 13 - though adding storage for the 48 mp camera ProRAW, ProRes, and 4K Cinema mode will put you into higher territory. I ordered a 14 Pro Max and was expecting waaayyy higher prices - especially with all the goodies added to the BoM like much better cameras, a more capable modem and accelerometer, and a 4nm A16 SoC - but was pleasantly surprised that Apple held the line on price. I would've gone higher than my traditional 512 GB storage, but lightning is still running at USB2 speeds so I'll hold off on going 1 TB until we have a USB-C hard-line.
This was me when I got the iPhone 12 Pro. I was dead set on the normal phone until I got in the shop and saw that the monthly was not that different 🤷🏽♂️

the fact that the regular 14 iphones don’t have 120hz display is fucked especially for the price point they are at. I’m keeping my 13 Pro Max at least until the 15 Pro Max or 16 Pro Max. Just feel like the improvements this year are not that much. I upgraded to the 13 Pro Max from my Xs Max because it was the first iphone to come out with 120 hz display. Well worth it.

It's the complete opposite of most of their competitors. Most of them make flagship phones so people are intrigued, but the price is too high for people and they end up buying a cheaper phone. I will never understand why people seem so eager to throw their money at Apple but refuse to give much money to the competition. Why are people ok to pay 1500€ for an iPhone even if they're not doing anything out of the extraordinary with their phone but then think a 1000€ Samsung is crazy money ?!?! Apple really is becoming more and more of a luxury company, but people who don't really have the revenue for luxury will still buy their products

The chassis actually had a MAJOR redesign, with it opening from the back, which means way cheaper back glass repairs
but its more expensive to replace it on the iPhone 14s though I think

What I think? I’m still using my iPhone 8 and Apple watch S5 until I get my Garmin Fenix 8 and probably I’ll upgrade next year to the 13 or 14.
The base 14 is only upgraded from the 13 if you are into repair. Inside the phone it was 100% redesigned

I agree to an extent however everyone I knew that was going to buy the iPhone 14 ended up just saving way more money and buying a 13.

I definitely felt the decoy effect on my macbook pro purchase. Bought the 14 pro instead of the air.
That being said, the I always bought the cheapest of the most expensive model. So I always felt that I was getting a decent value.
I'm in it for the battery life. Looking forward to the Ultra!!

Apple’s decoy effect works every time 😭 even someone like myself who KNOWS that they do this still falls pray to this. I bought a 14 inch MBP in August. The new MacBook Air came out a few weeks before I went to buy the laptop, and so I strongly considered getting a highly speced Air to save money, especially since the design and features are quite similar to the pro line. I alllllmost bought it but by the time you spec it up, it’s very expensive. I just kept thinking “well the M1 Pro might last a little longer and be more powerful than the M2 long term, and it’s basically the same price”. So of course I bought the pro😅
Most series 7 are sold out. My sister got one for $330, now it’s sold out or going for same price as series 8(Best Buy) they also still have series 6 for $429. Would t surprise me if they still had series 5. Never understood why some stores refuse to lower prices.
Just checked and yup they still have series 5 for full price. Hey should you buy series 8 or series 5 for same price…. Lol
I'm happy with my M1 13 inch pro from last year, I can't imagine needing anything faster.

Hey people are saying that regular 14 pro have worse battery than 13 pro you do a battery test between those 2.
The decoy always seems to be the mid-range model, the base model is usually good value and so is the "Pro" model, but the one in between isn't.

I had pre ordered an iPhone 14 pro max to replace my iPhone 11 because of the dynamic island and for the “it’s only $100 more” than the pro. Because my phone wouldn’t arrive until Oct 20th, I had time to think on it and ended up canceling my order due to the fact that I realized I was being manipulated and that the dynamic island would wear off after using it for awhile
dynamic island reminds me of 3d touch, I was excited about it on my iPhone 6s but I really didn't use it that often and was not big enough of a change to go from the 6 to 6s

You know, with every other smartphone bumping up in price due to the current round of inflation, the fact that the iPhone has held the line on prices (despite higher BoM costs) means that Apple is actually _discounting_ the iPhone (at least in the US).
In other countries, price hikes are actually probably more due more to exchange rates and VATs than Apple price changes.
Given the incredibly high inflation rate, I'd argue that you can probably get a 14 Pro model for pretty close to the same spend that you'd have put out last year for a 13 - though adding storage for the 48 mp camera ProRAW, ProRes, and 4K Cinema mode will put you into higher territory.
I ordered a 14 Pro Max and was expecting waaayyy higher prices - especially with all the goodies added to the BoM like much better cameras, a more capable modem and accelerometer, and a 4nm A16 SoC - but was pleasantly surprised that Apple held the line on price. I would've gone higher than my traditional 512 GB storage, but lightning is still running at USB2 speeds so I'll hold off on going 1 TB until we have a USB-C hard-line.
I think the 13, 13 mini, and the 14 Minus are the best notched iPhones. And the SE 3 is the best non-notched iPhone.
This was me when I got the iPhone 12 Pro. I was dead set on the normal phone until I got in the shop and saw that the monthly was not that different 🤷🏽♂️
It’s not the decoy effect, it’s the RUclips clickbait effect. RUclipsrs will always find a product “not to buy” to get views. Ironically, those are usually the best sellers.
the fact that the regular 14 iphones don’t have 120hz display is fucked especially for the price point they are at. I’m keeping my 13 Pro Max at least until the 15 Pro Max or 16 Pro Max. Just feel like the improvements this year are not that much. I upgraded to the 13 Pro Max from my Xs Max because it was the first iphone to come out with 120 hz display. Well worth it.
People shouldn’t upgrade until at least 2 years as he’s stated and other have stated apple doesn’t expect people to upgrade yearly. iPhone 14 pro isn’t for people who own iPhone 13 Pro it’s for iPhone 12 and earlier owners. I got mine from 12 pro. I now have 120hz, brighter screen, better cameras, and dynamic island. Worthy upgrade. I’m won’t get new one til least 16 pro
8:40 Yeah, I fell right into this one, I was going to get the S8 (from my dying S4) but the Ultra just made the S8 look pitiful. Damn you Apple! (Also, monthly payments are kinda evil, especially because I most certainly did not have enough money to just buy it outright).
Still getting the 14 Plus. Rather save the $200. Don’t need the fancy island or camera that I won’t really use nor the 120hz, 60 is fine
The apple rumor/RUclips industry is a dying breed. Y’all seriously gonna be doing the same thing 2+years from now? The smartphone has hit its peak, apple/Samsung are drawing out the inevitable of making a completely notch/hole/island LESS screen. Phones are so advanced and built to wheee your average customer does not need to upgrade every year.
Definitely didn’t like the skits when you first started them. But either they’ve gotten better or they’ve just grown on me. Either way this one made be loll!

It's the complete opposite of most of their competitors. Most of them make flagship phones so people are intrigued, but the price is too high for people and they end up buying a cheaper phone. I will never understand why people seem so eager to throw their money at Apple but refuse to give much money to the competition. Why are people ok to pay 1500€ for an iPhone even if they're not doing anything out of the extraordinary with their phone but then think a 1000€ Samsung is crazy money ?!?! Apple really is becoming more and more of a luxury company, but people who don't really have the revenue for luxury will still buy their products
