Yeah, I was rewatching bits of these episodes when making this video and Brock and Misty were so happy for him when he beat Lt. Surge because he had finally earned a badge himself😂
I just love that after all them pity-badges Ash litterally expected Blaine to just give him a badge after preventing a volcano eruption, and Blaine wasn't having it - No way kiddo, ya gotta beat me to earn it. That being said, I don't think their battle is overrated in any way. We were used to seeing Ash using pretty much only Pikachu, Bulbasaur and Squirtle. Blaine was on a whole nother level - a team of clearly grown and powerful pokémon, we saw how Squirtle didn't stand a fighting chance and Pikachu only beat Rhydon on a critical hit asspull. Charizard Vs Magmar on the other hand was a battle between two high-leveled pokémon that we at that point hadn't seen before in the animé - and rookie Ash was one of the two trainers! The battle was on a whole nother league than we were used to see him in, and he owned it - This was a true pokémon battle and felt like a pre-taste of what was to come later on. It had a huge impact on the fanbase and that's why i don't think its overrated in any way
One detail from the sun and moon. When the Alola class went to Kanto Ash explained about the gym battles and the badges earned by beating the gym leaders, they ask Ash if he won any badges and Ash smugly says yes just to Brook and Misty asking sarcastically a really, making enphasis on the fact that Ash won half of his badges by the simpathy of the gym leaders.
The writers made Ash do some really goofy things in Kanto. Him being a novice and not that experienced is understandable, but not using Pidgeotto against Erica and not even considering Krabby for Blaine 💀💀. Also, it would’ve been cool if that wild Haunter had evolved into the Gengar Ash caught in Journeys and that’s why it had a distrust of humans because the trainer who caught it didn’t bond with it how Ash bonded with it at the Tower.
Good Old Original series battles🤩 Old series was made just for fun though. But Ash is a genius. Making it into the league with 3 properly earned badges. (I kinda miss OS and it felt nostalgic) One of the reasons why I said movie universe Ash was more intelligent was because how he battled against Erika in the movie🙌😃
I definitely have a lot of nostalgia for these battles! The issue is, looking past that nostalgia, these battles are really quite poor by today's standards😂
Ash vs Blaine is hyped and good because of what’s going on, the music and well ash vs Giovanni was not a thing, so it was the lagit last gym battle he had in kanto so I think it’s hyped for good reason
Ash's first set of Gym Battles was really rough. The big problem was obviously that Ash only earned 3 Badges by beating the Gym Leader. I appreciate Ash vs Koga just for continuing with the battle after dealing with Team Rocket instead of just giving Ash the Badge. Some people say that Ash deserved the Badges because it shows qualities outside of battling, but I don't like that argument because: 1. The Pokemon League is for the best battlers. 2. Ash deals with Team Rocket, the cause of most of the interruptions, constantly. 3. It still shouldn't have happened 5 times.
@@EliteTrainerMark I agree with the Boulder, Cascade, and Marsh Badges, but disagree a little with the Earth Badge, and A LOT with the Rainbow Badge. I'll start with the Rainbow Badge. Ash RISKED HIS LIFE to save Gloom, a pokémon that was about to cheese Ash out of a battle that he otherwise was going to win, piloted by a Trainer who literally kicked him out of the Gym. You know who didn't go in to save Gloom? ERIKA. This series of events not only shows a lot about Ash's character, but ALSO OF ERIKA'S. The way I see it is that Erika handed the badge to Ash, not just in recognition of his courage, but also in recognition of her own relative cowardice. Because Ash RISKED HIS LIFE to save Gloom, when Erika herself would not, Erika recognized Ash as more worthy of the Rainbow Badge. As for the Earth Badge, the dev team wasn't about to have Ash get swept by Mewtwo. Giovanni entrusted the Earth Badge to Jessie, James, and Meowth. Ash DID beat the Gym Leaders here, because Giovanni MADE them the Gym Leaders. It's not narratively satisfying, but it is legitimate, and I feel like he won more than fair and square considering their chicanery. That being said, I COMPLETELY AGREE about the Boulder, Cascade, and Marsh badges being unearned. Completely agree.

@@haydeniskander5306 I was gonna say this. the rainbow badge was 200% earned. Ash proved himself in more than one way, by saving a strangers pokémons life, putting himself in harms way. They couldn't continue the battle right after (I mean, their building burned down, they would and should have other priorities) Ash was winning the battle anyways - Erika knew the outcome, so there was no need to finish it up after what had just happened.
I think it is inevitable Lt. Surge will return down the line. Ash beat Visquez (normal class) and Tony (great class) who are both in the Vermillion gym. It may not necessarily be an official hyper class battle but he may return from his training journey in the not so distant future. It will be interesting to see what pokemon Lt. Surge has and whether he has obtained a mega stone or dynamax band.
Pretty much lol. I tried not to do too much recap of each battle, just go over the basics. Most of the actual battles themselves are not very memorable, but the episodes themselves are all pretty good
I started watching Pokemon about a year after it premiered in the U.S., and Volcanic Panic aired as I was making my way through the episodes chronologically. My friend Sid, who was a HUGE Pokemon fan, kept telling me about the Charizard vs. Magmar battle. He got me hyped for it, so when I went over to his house, we watched his videotaped recording of the episode. Then the next time we hung out, I showed him Erika's gym battle and the one where Misty caught Psyduck because he missed those when they first aired. Now I kind of want to ask him if he remembers that.

Despite the final “battle” of ash & Sabrina, where he won because Haunter (who wasn’t even his Pokémon) made Sabrina laugh, being absolutely weird & underwhelming.. the episodes with Sabrina, both of them, are some of the most memorable & iconic episodes in the entire series. At least to me. I’ll never forget ash, Misty & Brock turning into dolls & wandering around that doll house, that was so creepy to me as a kid.
A big problem with Ash being given badges is he wasn't getting the experience of overcoming them in battle. So it wasn't that much of a surprise when he lost in the league, because he pretty much lucked into it. While it is great that they show there are more important qualities than just being a good fighter. It stilled hampered him. Its also why in other seasons after this they send Team Rocket flying off so they don't interfere in the Gym Battle or the league battles for that matter. And Ash always gets his gym badges' through a battle. The only two Gym battles Ash really benefitted from were against Brock and Surge. Brock was the only truly respectable Gym Leader and Ash learned that there were more important things than winning. With Surge, Ash was forced to think for the first time against an opponent that was in-theory much stronger than him. Blaine's was the coolest but it was ultimately just Charizard showing off.
My personal favorite is Ash vs Lt. Surge. It was the gym battle that really got me to the anime and was most memorable. Ash vs Blaine would be my second favorite. As time goes on, some of these battles did not age well. I would love to see Ash gets a rematch. I know Lt. Surge is a higher possibility, but anime can breaks promises -_-
Ash and Misty I would say was earned. It was an early "Mayleen" battle where they were tied. Also Daisy was right about if Pikachu was willing to battle Ash would win.
Get what you're saying about Cinnabar Island, but all the same, my favorite moment from it is actually from the first match, when Magmar emerges. The "air lens" was BS literal plot-armor, but the musical accompaniment and Magmar's attitude really appeal and stand out as a genuine "Oh sh¥@!" moment.

I have a feeling that if Ash had battled Giovanni for the Earth Badge, he might have learnt about him being the leader of Team Rocket right then and there; because somebody would crash in and unintentionally spill the beans.

Hi, Great Video As always and Due to my new Kanto rewrite I might upload if I have time I has some new Gym battle rewrites could you read them. Ash has a Farfetch'd in this. Kanto rewrite Gym Battles Ash vs Brock Brock sends out Geodude which easily defeats Pikachu with a flurry of rock throws. Ash then sends out Butterfree which flies around Geodude to confuse it then using string shot to blast it away. Butterfree vs Onix. Onix uses rock smash and caterpie uses the rocks to throw at Geodude. Onix uses dig and misses Butterfree. Onix uses Rock throw hurting one of Butterfree's wings. Butterfree flies down a hole made when Onix used dig and uses sleeping powder. When Onix uses Dig it falls asleep underground and Butterfree uses signalbeam at full strength winning Ash the badge. Ash vs Misty Misty sends out Horsea and Ash sends out Farfetch'd. Farfetch'd uses its spring to bounce around Horsea and Horsea jumps up using Hydro pump. Farfetch'd dodges using Air slash to bounce it up to Horsea's level of height manouvering past its bubble beam attack jumping up even higher than Horsea using Ariel Ace finishing off Horsea. Misty sends out Vaporeon which uses quick attack mixed with water gun which hits Farfetch'd hurting it but Farfech'd uses its spring leek as a cane to stand and tries to keep up with Vaporeon's Movements but is instantly caught up with so it holds Vaporeon with its leek swinging Vaporeon away then jumping for the attack but being defeated by a hydro pump leaving Vaporeon injured. Butterfree comes out and is instantly barraged with Water gun. Vaporeon tries to instantly K.O Butterfree and attacks Butterfree where it hurt its wing vs Brock and Butterfree faints. Pikachu makes quick work of Vaporeon and Ash is now down to Pikachu as Misty is also down to Starmie. Starmie uses hypnosis and Ash gets in sync with Pikachu and Pikachu breaks out of it and Pikachu is barraged with an attack from Starmie being water gun. Ash tells Pikachu to use thunderbolt under the ground when Starmie uses Psychic to force it underground stuck and when it Paralyses Starmie, Ash tells Pikachu to finish off the battle with Electroball but when Starmie breaks out of it using Psychic Starmie uses a combo of surf and Rapid spin vs Pikachu using electroball and quick attack and a screen of smoke covers the field and Ash has won. Ash vs Surge Surge sends out Raichu which overpowers Pikachu in a one on one brawl and Ash is now thinking of evolving Pikachu. He is given a thunder stone by nurse joy when Pikachu is there injured and Pikachu refuses to evolve and instead they spend sleepless nights training to enhance Pikachu's speed such as training by racing Cindy's Ponyta. Using the electric wheel and going on runs. Ash decides to take on Surge once again. Ash returns and Pikachu uses its newly discovered speed to manouver around Surge's Raichu and using its tail it absorbs Raichu's electric as a speed boost to attack Raichu and win the battle. Ash vs Erika Ash and Erika fight in a 3 on 3 match. Charmander and Vileplume duke it out and Charmander wins but is taken down by Erika's Tangela as it was poisoned by Vileplume. Tangela also beats Ash's squirtle and uses Toxic spikes on Bulbasaur before fainting. It is down to Bulbasaur v Bulbasaur where Ash's uses vinewhip to bring Erika's into its toxic spikes and both are poisoned Bulbasaur and Erika's keep on fighting each other with vinewhips and energy ball but Bulbasaur leaps up turns around uses vinewhip pulling Erika's into its newly formed leaf storm knocking it out.
Ash vs Koga Charmander is sent out vs Koga's Zubat which attacks Ash with a frenzy of poison attacks like gunk shot and toxic spikes in an attempt to Poison Charmander. Charmander is poisoned and Ash is worried. He returns Charmander sending out Pikachu and Koga blinds Pikachu with mud from his battlefield. Ash returns Pikachu and sends out Squirtle which uses its shell to deflect all of poison type attacks but Squirtle gets stuck with the mud holding it in its shell. Koga gives Ash the antidote and tells Ash to take his pokemon to the pokemon centre leaving the gym and Ash leaves in rage. Ash returns primed and ready sending out Squirtle which uses the muddy battlefield mixing in water gun and taking them and pushing the water at Zubat blinding it and it uses shell attack to finish it off. Koga sends out Croagunk which chops at Squirtle dodges it countering the poison chop and Croagunk and itself faints. Koga sends out his third pokemon which is Koffing and it blinds Pikachu but now after being trained Pikachu can listen to Ash while blinded, Except,WELL,Pikachu forgot the method on how to fight blinded and uses a frenzy of moves in a panic such as thundershock and quick attack and it knocks out Koffing as wll as itself when using quick attack smashing both into a wall. Charmander is left to Koga's ace Tentakruel. Tentakruel uses Sludge bomb which Charmander deflects with fire spin. Tentakruel instantly switches to poison jab inflicting a lethal blow to Charmander's throat poisoning him. Charmander is now poisoned and Koga lands many blows with poison jab. Charmander is held up by Tentakruel's thorns and thrown into the rocks but before it is thrown it remembers being abandoned and beating Damien's team with, With, WITH Dragon rage evolving and attacking tentakruel in a frenzy using Dragon breath. Tentakruel dodges and Koga is ecstatic. He attacks with surf and Charmeleon jumps into the air using flamethrower at Tentakruel which it blocks making smoke appear. When the smoke clears Koga attacks but Charmeleon has already gotten to him and... using Dragon rage it clashes with Koga's Hydro Pump ending the Battle with Ash coming out Victorious.
Personally, I don't have a stand favourite but Charizard vs Magmar would be my number 1. In regards to Johto, my favourite is Ash vs Morty but only just over Ash vs Claire.
I don't like the goals either lol, this is the only time I've done one. I wanted to make this a series, but I needed some gauge of how much people actually wanted to see the content. And this video performed really badly compared to the other videos I had posted around this time. That said, it did hit 200 likes, so I guess I better start working on the Johto script!
As much as I would love to talk about the Orange Islands, I feel like the video would not perform too well, and the first two Gyms do not have any battling lol. At some point though I will come up with a reason to talk about how great the Orange Islands season is hahah

I feel like gyms like Brock misty and Erica are why charzard would obey ash he didn't earn all his badges like a ture trainer so to charzard he wasnt a worthy trainer (Damien as much of a jerk he was probably still won his badges fair) so I think that's why charzard didn't obey ash and once he made up for it by actually winning in the orange islands he started to respect him
I'm not sure if my favorite moment of that battle is when Pikachu refuses to battle Misty, to which she responds with "Pikachu! You're a real Pika-pal!" or after Pidgeotto defeats Starmie, Ash confidently says "Alright Pidgeotto, let's get that trainer badge!" Only for Team Rocket to bust through the Gym walls like Kool-Aid man😂
In the Generation I games, you can defeat Brock, skip Misty, defeat Lt. Surge, and then take on any of Misty, Erika, Koga, or Sabrina as the next Gym. All it takes to unlock those Gyms is completing Team Rocket plot points, so the Gym order is very open ended
@@EliteTrainerMark I don't want to hate the original series as a whole because the Johto region and league were incredible but most of the Kanto Gym Battles were pathetic and the Orange Islands were just boring Johto saved the anime from ending after the first series.
That's definitely arguably true, it's pretty well known by now that people look back on the original series with a great deal of nostalgia. Having said that, it's still one of the more outstanding moments of the series because Ash's Charizard actually decides to obey him for a change, even if it's for only one battle, on top of being one of the overall better done battles from Kanto
@@matthewkuscienko4616 it was great battle but the bar has been drastically raised since. By modern standards not even top 40. Drake i would say is the easily the best battle in the indigo league /Orange Islands. Blaine is probably #2 in kanto though

Ash and Misty I would say was earned. It was an early "Mayleen" battle where they were tied. Also Daisy was right about if Pikachu was willing to battle Ash would win.
Get what you're saying about Cinnabar Island, but all the same, my favorite moment from it is actually from the first match, when Magmar emerges. The "air lens" was BS literal plot-armor, but the musical accompaniment and Magmar's attitude really appeal and stand out as a genuine "Oh sh¥@!" moment.

Charizard vs Magmar is my favorite gym battle from Kanto.
I didnt like Charizard vs Magmar cause i didnt like how Charizard had been acting since evolving into Charmeleon.
I have a feeling that if Ash had battled Giovanni for the Earth Badge, he might have learnt about him being the leader of Team Rocket right then and there; because somebody would crash in and unintentionally spill the beans.

Hi, Great Video As always and Due to my new Kanto rewrite I might upload if I have time I has some new Gym battle rewrites could you read them. Ash has a Farfetch'd in this.
Kanto rewrite Gym Battles
Ash vs Brock
Brock sends out Geodude which easily defeats Pikachu with a flurry of rock throws. Ash then sends out Butterfree which flies around Geodude to confuse it then using string shot to blast it away. Butterfree vs Onix. Onix uses rock smash and caterpie uses the rocks to throw at Geodude. Onix uses dig and misses Butterfree. Onix uses Rock throw hurting one of Butterfree's wings. Butterfree flies down a hole made when Onix used dig and uses sleeping powder. When Onix uses Dig it falls asleep underground and Butterfree uses signalbeam at full strength winning Ash the badge.
Ash vs Misty
Misty sends out Horsea and Ash sends out Farfetch'd. Farfetch'd uses its spring to bounce around Horsea and Horsea jumps up using Hydro pump. Farfetch'd dodges using Air slash to bounce it up to Horsea's level of height manouvering past its bubble beam attack jumping up even higher than Horsea using Ariel Ace finishing off Horsea. Misty sends out Vaporeon which uses quick attack mixed with water gun which hits Farfetch'd hurting it but Farfech'd uses its spring leek as a cane to stand and tries to keep up with Vaporeon's Movements but is instantly caught up with so it holds Vaporeon with its leek swinging Vaporeon away then jumping for the attack but being defeated by a hydro pump leaving Vaporeon injured. Butterfree comes out and is instantly barraged with Water gun. Vaporeon tries to instantly K.O Butterfree and attacks Butterfree where it hurt its wing vs Brock and Butterfree faints. Pikachu makes quick work of Vaporeon and Ash is now down to Pikachu as Misty is also down to Starmie. Starmie uses hypnosis and Ash gets in sync with Pikachu and Pikachu breaks out of it and Pikachu is barraged with an attack from Starmie being water gun. Ash tells Pikachu to use thunderbolt under the ground when Starmie uses Psychic to force it underground stuck and when it Paralyses Starmie, Ash tells Pikachu to finish off the battle with Electroball but when Starmie breaks out of it using Psychic Starmie uses a combo of surf and Rapid spin vs Pikachu using electroball and quick attack and a screen of smoke covers the field and Ash has won.
Ash vs Surge
Surge sends out Raichu which overpowers Pikachu in a one on one brawl and Ash is now thinking of evolving Pikachu. He is given a thunder stone by nurse joy when Pikachu is there injured and Pikachu refuses to evolve and instead they spend sleepless nights training to enhance Pikachu's speed such as training by racing Cindy's Ponyta. Using the electric wheel and going on runs. Ash decides to take on Surge once again. Ash returns and Pikachu uses its newly discovered speed to manouver around Surge's Raichu and using its tail it absorbs Raichu's electric as a speed boost to attack Raichu and win the battle.
Ash vs Erika
Ash and Erika fight in a 3 on 3 match. Charmander and Vileplume duke it out and Charmander wins but is taken down by Erika's Tangela as it was poisoned by Vileplume. Tangela also beats Ash's squirtle and uses Toxic spikes on Bulbasaur before fainting. It is down to Bulbasaur v Bulbasaur where Ash's uses vinewhip to bring Erika's into its toxic spikes and both are poisoned Bulbasaur and Erika's keep on fighting each other with vinewhips and energy ball but Bulbasaur leaps up turns around uses vinewhip pulling Erika's into its newly formed leaf storm knocking it out.
Ash vs Koga
Charmander is sent out vs Koga's Zubat which attacks Ash with a frenzy of poison attacks like gunk shot and toxic spikes in an attempt to Poison Charmander. Charmander is poisoned and Ash is worried. He returns Charmander sending out Pikachu and Koga blinds Pikachu with mud from his battlefield. Ash returns Pikachu and sends out Squirtle which uses its shell to deflect all of poison type attacks but Squirtle gets stuck with the mud holding it in its shell. Koga gives Ash the antidote and tells Ash to take his pokemon to the pokemon centre leaving the gym and Ash leaves in rage. Ash returns primed and ready sending out Squirtle which uses the muddy battlefield mixing in water gun and taking them and pushing the water at Zubat blinding it and it uses shell attack to finish it off. Koga sends out Croagunk which chops at Squirtle dodges it countering the poison chop and Croagunk and itself faints. Koga sends out his third pokemon which is Koffing and it blinds Pikachu but now after being trained Pikachu can listen to Ash while blinded, Except,WELL,Pikachu forgot the method on how to fight blinded and uses a frenzy of moves in a panic such as thundershock and quick attack and it knocks out Koffing as wll as itself when using quick attack smashing both into a wall. Charmander is left to Koga's ace Tentakruel. Tentakruel uses Sludge bomb which Charmander deflects with fire spin. Tentakruel instantly switches to poison jab inflicting a lethal blow to Charmander's throat poisoning him. Charmander is now poisoned and Koga lands many blows with poison jab. Charmander is held up by Tentakruel's thorns and thrown into the rocks but before it is thrown it remembers being abandoned and beating Damien's team with, With, WITH Dragon rage evolving and attacking tentakruel in a frenzy using Dragon breath. Tentakruel dodges and Koga is ecstatic. He attacks with surf and Charmeleon jumps into the air using flamethrower at Tentakruel which it blocks making smoke appear. When the smoke clears Koga attacks but Charmeleon has already gotten to him and... using Dragon rage it clashes with Koga's Hydro Pump ending the Battle with Ash coming out Victorious.

Personally, I don't have a stand favourite but Charizard vs Magmar would be my number 1. In regards to Johto, my favourite is Ash vs Morty but only just over Ash vs Claire.

Pewter city is not the worst gym battle. It sets the stage and onix is presented as a monster

I don't like the goals either lol, this is the only time I've done one. I wanted to make this a series, but I needed some gauge of how much people actually wanted to see the content. And this video performed really badly compared to the other videos I had posted around this time.
That said, it did hit 200 likes, so I guess I better start working on the Johto script!

As much as I would love to talk about the Orange Islands, I feel like the video would not perform too well, and the first two Gyms do not have any battling lol. At some point though I will come up with a reason to talk about how great the Orange Islands season is hahah

I feel like gyms like Brock misty and Erica are why charzard would obey ash he didn't earn all his badges like a ture trainer so to charzard he wasnt a worthy trainer (Damien as much of a jerk he was probably still won his badges fair) so I think that's why charzard didn't obey ash and once he made up for it by actually winning in the orange islands he started to respect him

I'm not sure if my favorite moment of that battle is when Pikachu refuses to battle Misty, to which she responds with "Pikachu! You're a real Pika-pal!" or after Pidgeotto defeats Starmie, Ash confidently says "Alright Pidgeotto, let's get that trainer badge!" Only for Team Rocket to bust through the Gym walls like Kool-Aid man😂

In the Generation I games, you can defeat Brock, skip Misty, defeat Lt. Surge, and then take on any of Misty, Erika, Koga, or Sabrina as the next Gym. All it takes to unlock those Gyms is completing Team Rocket plot points, so the Gym order is very open ended
I know every anime needs a beginning to the story but the Kanto arc is pathetic compared to the other regions especially the stupid Indigo League.
I think the big moments (like the Gym Battles and the League) were underwhelming, but the first season as a whole is still really entertaining
@@EliteTrainerMark I don't want to hate the original series as a whole because the Johto region and league were incredible but most of the Kanto Gym Battles were pathetic and the Orange Islands were just boring Johto saved the anime from ending after the first series.

That's definitely arguably true, it's pretty well known by now that people look back on the original series with a great deal of nostalgia. Having said that, it's still one of the more outstanding moments of the series because Ash's Charizard actually decides to obey him for a change, even if it's for only one battle, on top of being one of the overall better done battles from Kanto
@@matthewkuscienko4616 it was great battle but the bar has been drastically raised since. By modern standards not even top 40. Drake i would say is the easily the best battle in the indigo league /Orange Islands. Blaine is probably #2 in kanto though
