Also a reminder of how sadistic Kanto Gyms could be. Blaine basically tried to kill Pikachu and Charizard in back to back battles.
It was the first time we really saw the raw power and potential of Ash's Charizard.
Bruh those Kalos 3D camera angles were pure cinema. So sad they didn't carry out to the Future series
I'm not gonna hate on art style changes just because it's different, but I really wouldn't have minded the Kalos style being used for the rest of Ash's era. Especially Journeys since Sun and Moon was obviously something very different.
Sucks that doing 3D camera in the anime for 3 years straight costs a lot and the anime doesnt profit the company so the series after that have like zero budget to work with
Fortunately, the SM artstyle is much easier for the animators to work with, giving some amazing animation, and ages much better too

They did use and still use the 3D camera though, they just became better and it blends in much better, the budget reason is also, put simply, stupid, the anime actually got a much better budget when they transitioned into fully digital and trained their staff on it, the art style change also allowed them much more time to refining the overall quality of episodes adn the change of formula also allowed for more variety in their writing, put a simple example, the stoutland and litten arc would never worked in old formula with the time spent building it up across episodes, and in general, the only things that looked a bit out of place in SM, and were improved in journeys, were ash, pikachu and the TR
Man I felt so bad for Elesa, she's my favorite Unovan Gym Leader and her Gym Battle in the anime is only remembered for Ash's stupidity.
You really have to wonder what the anime staff were thinking with that battle because not even Kanto Ash would do something this brain-dead.
And to think some unova fans like to gloat how BW is flawless or top tier. Decisions like this are what give it a bad rap that it kinda deserves

Korrina’s battle was really special to me. I already loved Korrina as a character, and just witnessing her pride get shattered with Lucario’s inability to control its Mega was honestly vary sad. She was really trying, and she made me think of Ash to some extent, since Ash has had moments where some of his Pokemon struggle to control a greater power (like Chimchar’s Blaze). I’m glad she returned in Journeys, even if it was for a short time. (I really wish we got to see her and Lucario duke it out with Ash and Greninja)
Looking back, that arc made absolutely no sense because it would later get contradicted in the same series.
Lucario was being overwhelmed by his power basically generating with every movement, yet they tried to go "Oh your bond isn't strong enough", only to backpedal on this when Team Rocket tries to force Sycamore's Garchomp to Mega Evolve and when Trevor's Charizard manages to use it despite being rowdy as a Chameleon.
And don't even get me started on when Ash could use it. "Their bond was already perfect" my ass; it took Lucario's getting his pride shattered by Greninja for that so-called perfect bond to reach its peak.
Korrina was probably one of most developed gym leader and I agree with this video of being best gym battle with only second to Clemont

Journeys was by far the most disappointing series tbh. Specially when, all people were waiting for Ash and Serena reunion and all we got a 10 sec hi bye.
It wasn't just that tho. The Episodic Nature COMPLETLY ruin any good chance, how galar was completly rushed/forgetten despite being the gen 8 anime, ash refusing to use his old mon till aim to be mid master, just alot more

At least Serena got to reunite with Ash, however short it was. May and Max didn't even get that for Journeys. (and they were some of my favorites of Ash's Companions)
Speaking of which, if it was me, I would've made Aim To Be A Master to be about Ash reuniting with all of his companions, one by one, to give them all a final hurrah. Not just journeying with Misty and Brock AGAIN. Starting with the Galar Group (if we can call Goh and Chloe that) and working our way to the Kanto group, ending with Ash & Pikachu - and the Team Rocket Trio - heading off on a new journey. That way, everyone's favorite companions can get a final hurrah.
I'm more mad about Ash's loss to Cress than the entire internet's anger towards his loss to Trip. He didn't even have Zekrom's nerf to justify it
Looking back at unova you Can clearly see that Zekrom's nerf is present in the entire gen. Pikachu is really sick vs snivy that is why he lost ( why does everyone forget that ?) And after that he was less resilient. He nearly kept is raw power but was taked down easily in the beginning of unova, but he slowly had his stamina come back ( you never see ash training Pikachu in unova, but all other pokémon have special training)

I feel like the worst part of Elesa's gym is that Ash not only planned on using just Palpitoad, he made the conscious decision to bench the entire team for just Palpitoad. Ash, the guy who all but twice has had gym battles come down to a 1v1.

One of my favourites is the first battle with Ash vs Wulfrick.
I originally watched the 2nd battle first when I was younger and when I rewatched the xy anime years ago I was like “damn don’t remember Hawlucha here? Holy crap he took down the main member?! How did Ash lose this??” Averlug 3 v 1 Hawlucha, talon flame and Greninja hurt me bro.
Ash had good moments like using water shiriken to freeze his feet. But Ash was under pressure catching up with Sawyer, trying to relay on locking in with Greninja since the episode before Sawyer Secptile actually beats Greninja for the first time.
In my opinion (istg if y'all start a fight over this) Raihan vs. Ash was kinda bad simply because they made Raihan seem not as strong as he's supposed to be. In pokemon swsh, Raihan is the only person who's ever come close to defeating Leon, so I would think he'd have no problem crushing Ash's team. Raihan has worked his entire life to defeat Leon, yet this kid walks in and takes him down on the first try, THEN manages to make it to the finale tournament? Disappointing to me, a loyal Raihan stan

He gets a rematch with Ash with his newly evolved Manetric though. The story around the first battle, Ash offering to return the badge upon learning it wasn’t a fair fight, does show how much he’s grown.

It's a similar problem with the evolution for Ash's Incineroar: because it happened as late as it did, they didn't get any real time to take advantage of the development of the Pokemon getting to evolve. Both were pretty botched if you ask me
You didn’t talk about it, but I also really like Korrina’s fight in journeys! It was hyped up for like 3 months due to COVID, and seeing Dragonite destroy one of ash’s greatest opponents made me the biggest Dragonite stan
Man sinnoh gym battles really were top tier, like not a single one of those battles I will skip when rewatching the anime. Best season of the anime for sure.

All of Ash's gym battles in Sinnoh were good in their own ways, but for me personally, what made the battle as great as it is was that it's coming off the heels of Maylene having experienced a hard loss to Paul that had her questioning her strength as a trainer. Because of that, it served as a redemption arc for her to be able to prove her worthiness as a gym leader, which is also somewhat in-line with the games, were she's depicted as being a strong and talented but inexperienced trainer that's still finding her footing and living up to her potential

Ash's best gym battles: Olympia, Ramos, Fantina, Falkner, Morty, Gardenia, Clemont, Wulferic, Claire, Korrina, Maylene.
Ash's battle with Clay was the first battle I've ever watched in my life, but his battle with Clemont is something else...
If you counted the Kahunas, I would have included the Frontier Brains too.
Watching this again there's some weird choices here, I'll overlook Valerie since a lot of other people went into it:
1. Misty's 1st season Gym with Ash was actually very good. Before TR bust through the wall, her Starmie's gem was flashing indicating it was nearly out of energy. Ash would have won, and Butterfree/Pidgeotto did really well in that battle. For only the second Gym of the entire anime, it was a vast improvement over Brock's. Great animation too for 1997.
2. Flannery and Bugsy's Gyms are both much better than a D. Flannery has some great moments with Corphish sleeping and Ash having to wake it up, hitting the underside of Slugma/Magcargo with Bullet Seed and Bubblebeam, and her Torkoal using Overheat and Ash learning how to deal with it. In Bugsy, Cyndaquil spinning in the air (preview to Dawn's move 10 years later), and shooting fire down onto Scyther was fantastic.
3. Visquez was literally one of the best battles in JN. I don't know how you rate it so low, fantastic animation, fantastic battling, and came before JN included gimmicks like Mega/Dynamax in every battle. It's also the first time we see an Electrode in an official match, and Ash's Gengar was fantastic and got a great win here.
4. Pryce was a Kanto pity badge as late as Johto, deserves D tier.
I dislike the Pryce battle for the same reason and also due to Pikachu using electricity to damage a Ground type, a lame shenanigan we had otherwise left behind in Kanto between the gym battles with Brock, the first one with Blaine, and Team Rocket filling in for Giovanni.
Speaking of which, while the rematch with Blaine was great, the first battle with him was terrible! Squirtle was embarrassingly taken out in a single hit despite having the type advantage, Blaine gave up on Ninetales after that for no reason (like half the Kanto gym leaders strangely did), Charizard forfeited on his own (yes, it was a good character arc but still highly embarrassing in a gym battle), Pikachu's "go for the horn" meme was the biggest BS win Ash had until the Thunder Armor, Magmar's non-existent "air lance" ability was another load of BS, and Ash and Pikachu had to forfeit basically just because Pikachu's life was at risk due to the extremely dangerous gym environment that the gym leader himself had arranged.
This video is s tier!! I loved a lot of things about your video, especially the ending! Though I noticed you changed a lot of your opinions on the pokemon episodes lately

I couldn’t stop laughing at the ending. Man that Journeys episode with Wallace and Serena pissed off both Western and Eastern fans alike that day. XD
Not nearly as much as when we waited a whole month to see Diantha get absolutely bodied by Leon in less than half of an episode.
That alone made so many people just straight up quit Journeys, and I wish I was one of them before I would be subjected to what came after.
People really weren't pissed off at all. Wallace was funny and most people realize we're not supposed to see the battle. Most Serena fans also liked the episode.

Ash beating Wallace off-screen was meant to be a fun diversion, not for people like you to have meltdowns over. We were never meant to see that battle, and I cannot even comprehend why you're having a meltdown over it. Even if the Serena ep was a 2-parter, we STILL would not see the battle because the writers never intended to write it, they'd just extend the Contest portion. I can't believe this needs to even be stated

Magmar Vs. Charizard is one of my all time faves. The music and fluent animation still gives me goosebumps.❤🥰🙌 The Maylene gym battle was also fantastic, and I can rewatch that one any day of the week. Wulfric pulling out the mega stone in the 2nd battle was awesome to watch. 💙🥰

Great to know that we share the same favorite leader, the Japanese dub made it so much better with his theme playing at the end.
I really enjoyed both Sinnoh and Kalos every gym battles, especially Kalos. This series was truely masterpiece.

Let me get this straight, you rank Pryce from Johto that high? Not only was Pikachu's electricity hurting Piloswine not supposed to happen (it's a ground type), but Pryce flat out gives up the battle even though he was winning. This was a Kanto pity badge in late Johto when the writers started to have Ash win his badges more fairly. Ash would have lost to Piloswine with Pikachu otherwise. Technically Ash never beat Pryce.

Brawly is an interesting case of Ash not going into a rematch with the same team, somethjng that doesn’t happen often because rematches are often used as redemption storylines for the team who lost last time around and a way to showcase the results of the training Ash does with them in the interim.
The ending caught me off guard but it was hilarious 😂, great video, I agree with pretty much everything.

Tepig vs. Pansear was another ridiculous example of one of Ash's Pokemon taking damage from POWERFUL and sometimes even super effective moves (Pansear's Dig) yet it still manages to pull a win from 1 or 2 attacks...

I find pretty odd the complain about the Wallace battle. When people thinks about the Hoenn champion, people thinks about Steven, not Wallace.
Wallace is more of a coordinator and he wasn't even participating in the pokemon world championship.
I think the whole scene was pretty funny.
Technically, Wallace becomes Champion in Emerald, with Juan filling in as the last Gym Leader in Hoenn.
So Wallace is supposedly just as strong and skilled as Steven...but because these guys need 30 people to write a story, we are never shown this proof in the anime.

Journeys Hot Take: Instead of Volkner, Ash should've fought Elesa, now sporting her B2/W2 design, for redemption.
Since it's still an Electric-Type Gym Leader, it can play out very similar, just with different Pokémon.
Like a speedy Emolga instead of Fan Rotom and Zebstrika instead of Electivire, still getting its Ability overloaded.
As for Luxray's replacement, it would be fun to see her surprise everyone with a fabulous Mega Ampharos.

I'd give the battle between Ash vs Fantina the crown to my favourite gym battle. Tbh, it's one of those "I dunno why, it just is" kind of favourites. Ash vs Olympia is really close though.

I don't know if this is a hot take, but IMO, Valerie should be just above Tate and Liza. If Tate and Liza can get away with Thunder Armor, then Ash's Pokemon using it's claws to break a room is far from unacceptable plot armor (Again if Tate and Liza can go C. If they were also D, sure). If the argument is that it doesn't work in game, (unlike Thunder Armor which some people say is a representation of the Guts ability, which is still a stretch considering it doesn't buff your defenses), Ash used an electric type move to KO Volkner's Motor drive electivire. Even if it kept him out of S, it sure as hell didn't put him in D or anywhere close. It was cool and hype when it happened for all 3 of them, but Valerie is where you draw the line? It's not even lucky like with Brock and Hapu because if there wasn't access to water in the arena, we know damn well Pikachu wasn't winning against them. Actual plot armor, unlike Valerie, where damaging the room with claws to nullify its effect makes sense and it isn't forced.
Also, I'd personally put Olympia and Wulfric as an S-tier. Especially since Maylene is in S.

Ash probably wouldn't have even gotten to use the strat with Pikachu if his own partner didn't shock some sense into him. Poor guy almost got disqualified twice, and all cos he was so stupid that even Pikachu got tired of it. Glad to see the little guy's loyalty isn't completely blind

I think Ash beating Crasher Wake 3-0 was actually a fitting payoff to drawing against Maylene. Ash was a bit doubtful about accepting the badge because he didn't actually beat her, but since she had determined he deserved it, he said he had to keep battling hard to prove she was right.
Winning the very next Gym battle with a perfect 3-0 score was a great way to follow that up I feel. And despite not beating any of Ash's team, Wake still gave all three of them trouble.
It's definitely a more believable and acceptable sweep than we got with Wattson

Imo Fantina deserved S since it gave birth to THE most impactful strategy in the whole series. Counter Shield was so iconic it came back for the Cynthia and Leon battles in Journeys.

The gym battle with Elesa has to be dead last. Just Arceusawful writing. Even when I was rewatching the episode and knew what was going to happen, it took me forever to get through because of how cringy it was. Season 15 Ash planning on using one Pokemon for a three on three battle and just leaving the battle to get another one is just…….who thought that was ok?! The Black and White anime had its bad writing but that episode was just absolute garbage writing. And Ash won that battle fairly unlike most of his Kanto gym wins, which is astounding.
PS Speaking of the Kanto gym battles, most of them also belong at that bottom. I don’t care that it was early in the series. More competent writers would of known to have rookie Ash win his gym battles fairly even if he struggled doing it. That’s character growth. Not having his badges handed to him because he stopped Team Rocket from burning down the gym or whatever. Unfortunately this carried over to the Indigo League where instead of having Ash lose his battle with Richie fairly, the writers created some BS where Team Rocket distracted him and the referee was a moron and Charizard acted like a bitch. And the next episode, stupid Misty and Brock had the audacity to the entire loss on him when he got screwed over so much by those idiot writers. In conclusion, the Kanto saga was just a mess of idiotic and inexperienced writing.
To this day is STILL bothers me why Ash never battled the Galar Gym Leaders.

Same. Galar has some of the best roster of Gym Leaders in the series, and it's a shame that HALF of them didn't even appear in the main...
He doesn't need a gym battled anymore... He is already a champion... Plus now rank battles are the focus in the game in swsh too so anime use rank battle instead of gym battle

The Nanu battle was really awesome and the arc itself was probably my favorite Sun and Moon arc!! I'm working my way through Diamond and Pearl right now and my favorite right now is the Maylene battle!! Side note: seeing your anime reviews inspired me to do this binge (I'm finished with Sun and Moon, 111 episodes through Diamond and Pearl, 5 episodes through Journeys, and I have a long way to go 😊)!!
very awesome, gen 4 was the peak of the anime. Gen 5 will be an bit frustrating but it does get better
