yoooo!!!! Crystal Clear kicks ass!! it's the absolute best Pokemon romhack ever imo, and is such a great example of what the official main series games should strive to be like in the future. i was actually so disappointed that Scarlet and Violet weren't more like Crystal Clear, especially after hearing that the games would be fully open world. sure you can complete the games' objectives in any order you want, but unlike in Crystal Clear, the level of difficulty doesn't scale up or down based on your progression. that leads to the obvious issue of low level players wandering into high level areas and vice-versa, as well as major boss battles not being balanced based on how many the player had completed at that point in the playthrough, both of which were not problems in Crystal Clear. Scarlet and Violet were fully open world and allowed for free exploration, but they honestly may as well have been completely linear due to how the difficulty scaling worked and the fact that literally everyone was posting guides that showed the best order to complete all of the activities in based on levels anyway. Hopefully when we get around to Gen 10 Game Freak will reexamine the open world style of gameplay from Scarlet and Violet and retool it to be more similar to how Shockslayer designed Crystal Clear, but I won't get my hopes up too much tbh.
Raihan is actually stretching his "theme" in an attempt to beat the crap out of Leon and his Charizard by going full Sandstorm and Rock Slide, and he's hoping no one would notice :^)
Now I wish Gym Leaders focus on Single/Double Battle styles, not just types. Weather, traps, terrain, pivot switches, if those were implemented in the styles of Gym Leaders, plus a Challenge Mode, veterans can have a challenge.
I would give him Obstagoon, Malamar, Scrafty, Skuntank, Toxitricity and Hydreigon. The first four are of the campionship and the last was the only one I could remember.
@@Thatguy-fw9ld To be fair. Blue had technically recently been appointed as Gym Leader and it was probably easier (in universe) to simply let him use his personal team for the time being.
Fun fact: Koga has used an Arbok in the Adventures Manga. The red/blue manga has a trope of getting Arboks sliced in half, and Koga’s can actually regrow at incredible speeds, while others need to be taken to the Pokémon center. It can also move sliced off body parts
Even when I was little, I always just assumed the gym leaders were using multiple teams for different skill levels. That was why they all had stronger teams in Gold and Silver, or why Koga was strong enough to become an elite four despite only being gym leader #5, and it would explain what happens if a new trainer starts out in, say, Saffron City instead of Pallet Town. @@shadowmarauder6033 They tried to make them feel special by only giving them to the most important of trainers (namely the champion, the evil team leader, your main rival and... Korrina). Though I question why the Elite Four doesn't have them.
Eh the games started getting easy after Gen 3. Once Sword and Shield came out I knew they wasn’t even bothering trying to make the game difficult in any way. I mean I beat sword and shield using the first 6 Pokémon I caught off the first like 2 or 3 routes and never changed my team and didn’t experience a single loss. Also all the Pokémon got more stupid looking after Gen 3 lol. They also had a phase going which still persists to this day of having the staters not even look remotely interesting at all after Gen 1 and 2 and started noticing it in 3. Seems like every Pokémon game that comes out makes me a little bit more disappointed than I was with the last game.
Having a fully open world Pokémon game where you can battle the gyms in any order and their difficulty is based off your badges would be incredible. It would really be a fresh change to the game.
I know this comment is months old, but there's a Pokemon Crystal Romhack called "Crystal Clear" that does just that. You have essentially full access to both Kanto and Johto (even choosing which region you start in) and can challenge all of the gyms in any order you want. Each badge you obtain scales the next gym's levels and Pokemon up.
I WAS GONNA SAY lmao, I couldn't remember if it was Koga or another character that had an Arbok. I think Agatha also had one, but I'm not entirely sure cuz its been 7 years since I've read it.
Mikey gave him Aggron, and the mega isn't rock. Tyranitar isn't a fossil, but it would be very logical for him to have one. If he did it would be his mega, and Barbaracle would be replaced by Aerodactyl. Finally I can get rid of it. I hate Binacle so much.
well yeah if if he thinks mega aerodactyl is the best choice why would he discard the mega stone lol. aggronite/tranitarite are there because grant thinks they're garbage so throws them aside. ;)
What if for Cilan, Chili and Cress instead of being whatever leader is strong against your starter, they just made it a triple battle with all three using 2 pokemon each
Drayano's Blaze Black and Volt White ROM hack somehow made the triplets Rotation Battles with every first-stage starter of their types plus their ace monkey
I find it so irritating that this isnt made more prominent - many people don't even know or at least not have it confirmed! But yes, ALL Gym Leaders have 6+ Pokemon and are Great Trainers! The reason the eighth gym doesn't use six Pokemon is because the Elite Four uses anywhere from 4-5 and they save the 6-Team for Champion Battles. While I agree, it would be interesting to see them use 6 Pokemon since they are the final Gym Challenge, we should hold the standard to the Elite Four, too.
I often associate Jasmine the most with Ampharos, so it definitely makes sense. I mean, I often still confuse her for an electric type gym leader instead of a steel type gym leader lol.
Unless your name is Falkner, then you end up having a team with 4 Pokemon with the exact same type combination, 3 of whom you just took from the generation before you instead of Pokemon introduced in your gen that have more interesting type combinations.
Minor suggestion, I’d make Volkner’s Rotom have the appropriate form for your starter (Mow for Empoleon, Heat for Torterra and Wash for Infernape) Yeah it didn’t get the appropriate type until Gen V, but still. Good coverage.

I actually like it when Gym Leaders have starters on their teams, since I always picture it as _their_ personal starter, the one they got at the very start of their journey. They kept it all this time and it's the reason they fell in love with the type in the first place.
I get what your saying, but the three starters the player gets to choose from isn't necessarily every characters starter. A "starter pokemon" is just your first pokemon. It could be a charmander that the professor gives you, it could be a swablu that you find randomly, or it could be a manetric that you catch. Our character's starter pokemon aren't everyone's starter pokemon. (Btw don't scream at me lol I was just saying any pokemon could be a starter)
This also explains why some of the Gym Leaders (i.e Hearthome City in Sinnoh) won't battle you until you get stronger. These gym leaders recognize that they don't have a team that would be fair against weaker trainers, so won't face you until you have a certain number of other badges to prove you're worthy.
4:35 Honestly the Venusaur would actually be a shocking thing to encounter in a good way if that is Erika's Last Pokemon she sends out at you. Be a pretty neat twist.
I loved the Pokemon Origins moment too. It confirmed a head canon that I had ever since Gold and Silver came out. I had guessed the gym leaders had multiple teams to scale to challengers in universe because the Kanto gyms in the post game all had stronger teams. For over 10 years I thought it was just my explanation, then I saw it in Origins!
@@hystericallover5989 It wasn't labeled "funny" but if you assumed it to be funny and proceeded to type that lackluster response... Then you have located the funny. 😁
To be fair, there's nothing wrong with giving them starters, especially when you consider that starters are canonically given to new trainers before they start their journey, and likely have been for generations. It's not too much of a stretch to say that the gym leaders who grew up in each region had access to the same starters when they were kids. Even Professor Oak once had a Charmeleon when he was about Ash's age, which implies that he was also given a choice between the three Kanto starters when he first became a licensed trainer. *Even if they don't start their journeys in the same town where a Professor lives, Pokemon transfer via computer is available at just about every single Pokemon Center, and starters can still be found in the wild anyways. They're rare, but not *that* rare.
I mean, wally didn't, so... Not all of them did it, probably. And... They can't be find in the wild in any game (Don't counting special places, like friend safari), so... They CAN be *that* rare. At least rare to a extent that I suppose they can't just catch them any time and the professor just doesn't have them to everyone. So It would make sense that the majority of people just use normal pokemon found out there as their starters.
I would give him Obstagoon, Malamar, Scrafty, Skuntank, Thievul, and Umbreon (Obstagoon, Malamar, Scrafty and Skuntank from original gym battle, Thievul and Umbereon are Dark types that Marnie doesn't use)
This is what I love about the Crystal Clear ROM hack. You can do the gyms in any order and the game tracks how many badges you have and has 16 teams per gym leader. You can also grind on gym leaders if you want.
@@unitds27-delta they have so many team variations because you can choose to fight all 16 gym leaders (8 from johto, and 8 from kanto) in any order you want, because the game is fully open world with all of the game's objectives being able to be completed in any order you want. each gym leader has a different team based on how many gym badges you have, with their team (and therefore the overall difficulty of their gym battle) scaling up by 1 for every gym badge you collect. you can even rematch the gym leaders after beating them (which can be done at any time, and isn't reserved solely for post game) and select which difficulty level you'd like to fight them at. Crystal Clear absolutely kicks ass, and is imo the best Pokemon romhack that has ever been made; i personally believe that this hack should be the blueprint for what the main series games should strive to be, it's genuinely that good and that well done.
@@RUB1X014 so, They dont have to use the gigantimax pokemon. Piers is the one you battle for the dark badge and is in the main story line more than than the other gym leaders
Having recently beaten pokémon scarlet and violet, I loved that the post game has us revisit all the gyms and all of the gym leaders are using their actual teams which further solidifies that they are only fighting us based on the skill level and amount of badges we have.
@@Apolloshot I know about the teams. However, OP said, “…they are only fighting us based on the skill level and number of gym badges we have.” If that were actually the case, their teams would be adjusted depending on how many badges you have. If memory serves, Katy actually laments how she’s forced to only use one team for the gym challenge regardless of when you actually battle her.
The way I understood that bit of dialogue was that the regulations restrict them based on their general location rather than however skilled the opponent may be. Katy and Brassius are very close to Mesagoza and thus league rules and regulations restrict them to first/second gym status as the students are most likely to make either Cortando or Artazon the first stop on their journey. So basically it's just another instance of Geeta being a bad boss, for Paldea at least.
this would be a great mechanic if future games wanted to avoid linearity. each gym leader has a certified team to use against each badge level. so you could challenge gyms in any order you want and the gym leader's team will adjust accordingly. would also make for great replayability, since you could try a bunch of different orders to see each leader's different teams
I personally love the idea of NPC trainers with starters, it runs home the idea that they've personally been on or are currently on a Pokemon journey just like the player.
I think Flannery should have a Castform. Although it's a normal type, it can change to fire type when Sunny Day is activated- a move Flannery uses in the game.
10:51 can we just take the quick second to consider that Chuck only has two pokemon in his original gym battle. Granted the two pokemon are actually pretty strong, but it’s only two
Wait, was skipping Piers accidental or intentional? Because he is technically Galar's Dark gym leader, though he did also retire after the Champion cup...
I would actually give Kabu Chandelure over Heatmore because you can catch litwick in his gym challenge. It adds more variety to his team and it makes sense since Alister isn’t using one.
Which manga There are a couple featuring Hoenn and if its pokemon special ur referring to, it's non canon and about as irrelevant/relevant as the other mangas out there. Also still nothing to do with the video
I might seem dumb here, but since in the original gym battle, Bugsy's ace pokémon was Scyther, so naturally in this team he would have Scizor as his ace pokémon. But Jasmine also had a Scizor in her team

Still it would be amusing to see what all the non-starter typed leaders ended up picking as their starters I guess lol.
They did. It showed in an episode of that Brock's first Pokemon with an Onix that was given to him on his 10th birthday by his father who was the gym leader of Pewter City before him. I think Misty's was also probably in the same way hers was a Staryu and Lieutenant surge was a Pikachu most likely. And then Blaine is very close to his Magmar so that could have very well been his starter. I think the starters of each of the gym leaders are probably the ones that they hold very close to them. I mean it would make sense.
I think everyone gets a “starter” but it can’t all be the same Pokemon, we as the player character get a rare Pokemon but other beginner trainers probably just get a local bird or fish

Yeah, but the olny two dragons left that have something to make them inmmune to sandstorm (their ability) can't actually be obtained with that ability, so I'd say Kommo-o is the best pick
There's an idea for a rom, make it so you can go to the gyms in any order you want. The gym leaders adjust in accordance with the amount of badges you have. Also, do the same with the wild pokemon. Weaker pokemon will seek out noob trainers in hopes of getting stronger. Whilst stronger pokemon will tend to ignore them for not being "worthy" unlike trainers with more badges which weaker pokemon would be more cautious about. Not to say that you can't encounter weak pokemon when you have more badges, the encounter rate will just be lessened. (How they would know how many badge you had in the first place, I have no idea.)
Gen 8 sort of solved this by having the league structure in a set order, but I think it would be cool to have a region where you can challenge the gyms in any order.

This is what I love about the Crystal Clear ROM hack. You can do the gyms in any order and the game tracks how many badges you have and has 16 teams per gym leader. You can also grind on gym leaders if you want.

1. Why do the leaders have 16 teams? Wouldn't they only need 8, maybe 9?
2. The wording of that last sentence is... interesting
@@unitds27-delta it's a hack of Crystal, where there are 16 gyms (Johto and Kanto). The gym teams change for every badge you get to scale with you.

Having recently beaten pokémon scarlet and violet, I loved that the post game has us revisit all the gyms and all of the gym leaders are using their actual teams which further solidifies that they are only fighting us based on the skill level and amount of badges we have.
Not quite since they don’t adjust their gym battle teams. Katy only uses two Pokémon regardless of if you have zero badges or seven, for example.
@@yorecf9641They’re talking about the re-battles. After you complete the game you go back and fight all the gym leaders again.

Still it would be amusing to see what all the non-starter typed leaders ended up picking as their starters I guess lol.
Wally doesn't, so...
And in some game they don't say that these starters specifically are kind of rare pokemon? So It makes sense they don't use it
@@thetitsarefree Yeah i think that's right
28:10 I feel like he should have a Chandelure instead of a Heatmor, since Litwick, Sizzlipede, and Vulpix all appear in his Gym Challenge
Allister
@@razwanasultana2842 Chandelure isn't Allister's ace, Gengar is
I find it so irritating that this isnt made more proiment - many people don't even know or at least not have it confirmed!
But yes, ALL Gym Leaders have 6+ Pokemon and are Great Trainers!
They adapt their power level to your power level and situation!!!
This should really be a thing in Games, Anime, Manga, just everywhere! Clear and confirmed!!
@SebastianM Group He already gave Arcanine to Kabu, since Arcanine appears in Kabu's team in both Sword and Shield
Fun fact: Koga does us a regenerative Arbok in manga, he has a mirror battle against Agatha’s arbok who cuts koga’s in half but it just regenerates.
don't forget blue's charmeleon who SPLITS IT IN HALF
Michael: It doesn't matter "whether" they are dragon types for raihans team
Me: Good unintentional pun
Out
Just like Tate & Liza are actually the double battle gym leaders, Raihan is the sandstorm gym leader.
Imagine a game where u could go anywhere and battle the gym leaders in whatever order u want and after u beat one the rest have their team levels boosted and changed etc
For the last time ive played pokemon crystal... thats not what im talking about. I said every region not 2
You can also start in either region and change the in game music. There's so much packed into that rom hack it's insane
CRYSTAL CLEAR
That game is awesome...
Ryan Tan yes ive played crystal, but i was talking about crystal on steroids with a bit of shadow of morder aspect for the gym leaders. So lets say i wanna save falkner for last, well he would have 3 pidgeots etc etc (dont remember his team but it has sand attack i remember that well 😂)
infernape716 ok wait seriously? Ohh i was thinking of pokemon liquid crystal not crystal clear... hmm didnt know u could start on either side. But it would be cool if like we had every games region. Though that would be hard to fit 80 gym leaders into 100 lvls
I never noticed how similar Lenora and Cheren's outfits look
True
Same lmao

29:46 I disagree,,I think Raihan's team is based on dragons that are inmmune to sandstorm and non-dragons that set sandstorm with their abilities, so Steelix should be replaced by one of the remaining dragons that
are inmmune to sandstorm, which are Kommo-o, Dracozlot and Dracovish all with their hidden abilities, I'd say Kommo-o since it's the olny one of them you can actually get with the hidden ability and Hakamo-o is used
used by a gym trainer,, so it's fair
Good logic, but kommo-o is version exclusive
a.k.a Lizard Team because you can't call them dragon when they are not all dragon type
The ones that are not dragon types set sand with their abilities (Gigalith with Sand Stream and Sandaconda with Sand Spit)
Yeah, but the olny two dragons left that have something to make them inmmune to sandstorm (their ability) can't actually be obtained with that ability, so I'd say Kommo-o is the best pick
@@pikarceuseternamax6269 True! Kommo-o seems a good and logical choice for his team, too (fighting providing extra offensive coverage against ice)
I wouldn't change much other than swapping one of Raihan's non drsgon types with Dracovish since it gets sand rush therefore being buffed in sand
Volkner is my favorite hokag-- I MEAN gym leader (haha get it cos he looks like edgy Minato, laugh *now.*
Totally Not the Leader of the Phantom Theives JOKER WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE
There's an idea for a rom, make it so you can go to the gyms in any order you want.
So basically, the game of the anime.
That exists.
Crystal clear
So.. Pokemon ROWE?
@@DoTheDishesOrElse.. pokemon ROWE is fire
Gen 8 sort of solved this by having the league structure in a set order, but I think it would be cool to have a region where you can challenge the gyms in any order.
oh
I like that idea. Like, they having set teams preprared for each instance of level you achieve in-game.
There's such a game called Pokemon Crystal Clear, a hack of Pokemon Crystal which is open world and trainers/Gym leaders scale to your number of badges
Imagine if you did fight Whitney with 6 Miltanks though

that would be a nightmare
How are you everywhere I go on RUclips? You're scaring me!

@Weston Kelley why not Hell x over9000
Wouldn’t Scizor be Bugsys “Ace” so based on the rules Jasmine shouldn’t have that Pokémon.
Good point. So how would a second Skarmory do for the Olivine beauty?
Speaking of Skarmory, it's also weird to have 4 Normal/Flying types(3 of which come from Kanto originally), but not having probably the most distinctive non legendary gen 2 flying type.
good point
