And then we see him return in the new gens and absolutely demolish Kiawe. Imo he alongside Clemont or maybe a lil higher> He can prob defeat goh and May(may can go either way).
Even she was annoying in BW and maybe one of the most hated companion just after Max... Iris got maybe one of the best character development and nearly defeated Cytnhia without any gimmick...and she turned into one of loveable champions... I am really proud of her and this was done right by the Journeys....
I never understood thesa hatred for Max. I honestly liked him, and the bad first impression didn't last long for me. Iris on the other hand... well one of most annoying characters. Yeah, she get a lot better in Journeys, but "lovable" still seems a bit much to me. Also nearly defeated seems to be a bit of overstatement. She put up a good fight, but that isn't yet "nearly defeating".
I think its a reference to the magikarp episode which is funny since Ash was shown to be ripped in that episode too yet he purposefully put Goh instead 😂

I agree with this list especially with the top 3. Also apparently if this is true, there was a rumor, or plan for May to make a return in XY/XYZ to show off her Mega Blaziken to sort of market since Mega evolution was still the gimmick of that time, but couldn’t because of her Japanese VA’s voice condition. If it’s true and she does have Mega Blaziken and we just haven’t seen it, she might even surpass Goh potentially
Without those Legendaries, Goh might be in trouble against May’s Mega Blaziken (if she has one). But, I’m more inclined to think that Goh is smarter on his feet than May either way. …Hold on. Am I actually defending Goh? *What the FU-*
It's not just her Mega Blaziken she's even got a Venusaur and I won't be surprised if her Wartortle has evolved to Blastoise like that's 3 fully evolved OP starters and rest of her team is also good. She does indeed have a chance to beat Goh
Iris definitely deserves to be no. 1 💪 ever since BW she has already shown great battling skills & had even gotten a 99 win streak before officially becoming a trainer, she may not be everyone’s favorite companion but she’s the one who definitely shutted many haters down by becoming a regional champion who is ranked above Ash & is also the only one who pushed Cynthia to mega evolve her ace 🔥
I like Iris more as a rival than a companion. Not that I ever hated her as a travel companion, but she and Ash butted heads enough times that it's an easy transition in their relationship.
@@jenniferdaniels701 I had the same thoughts years ago but seeing as she is both a companion & a rival to Ash like Kiawe is great because it makes them both help each other out to become better battlers unlike the other companions who have different interests on which Ash cant relate to

I do think Misty deserves much more like maybe better than go since she actually trained her psyduck in sun and moon series which is a big up for her. I think even ash woudnt really make psyduck a useful pokemon
That would be actually a piece of cake for Ash. He even would've learnt it how to swim within days, which Misty still couldn't do after all these years. On the other end,Misty would've lost patience with Charizard,Sceptile.
When you said there's only one in the F tier, I thought Chloe. Yeah, Max doesn't have any pokemon of his own, but he actually traveled with Ash, May, and Brock. He befriended Deoxys, helped Ralts, helped Shroomish and Shuppet, got Poochyena to evolve, and bonded with Jirachi in movie 6. Chloe didn't do a quarter of that. She was just a recurring character of the day who happens to be friends with Goh before Journeys and Professor Cerise's daughter.
@@0axis771 Chloe only bonded with her family's Yamper and her own Eevee. She wasn't a true travel companion. I don't mean to make it sound like I'd put Max in D/C/B/A ranges as a trainer, but I don't see him as being higher than Chloe.
Iris should've fricking beat Cynthia in the Masters 8 tournament! I bet that a full 6vs6 battle in the semifinals pitting Iris against Ash would be way more cooler than Ash vs. Cynthia!!
It’s because she already had the potential ever since BW, if only y’all didnt hate her for dumb reasons then you would know all her capabilities as a trainer
Let’s be honest. There’s no other companion that can match Iris’s strength. Sure Brock and Misty have mega evolutions, and Goh has caught Legendaries, but none of them are Champions
Iris was honestly one of the best parts of Pokemon Journeys. I really wish we got to see that development happen in Black/White. It would've made me like BW way more :/
It wil be interesting to see who si number 1, after reading your comment I immediatly thought Alain, but then again if you consider Tobias as his rival he may take the cake, sure we didn't see him in the M8 but something tells me he is still out there hiding in the shadows with his legendaries and mythicals
Another great tier list bro!! Damn, seeing Goh in the E4 tier tho. Wasn’t expecting that. I can see it making sense after you explained it, but I’d personally put him in above average. And revisiting Iris’ feats in this video, I’m still so happy with her development!
Except you're forgetting one thing about goh. Most of his battles aren't an indication of his real strength because they weren't fought by him alone. Aside from the karate master and Oleana, he had help in literally every trainer or wild battle he fought. That's not a good indication of his strength as an individual

I think Brock should be up a tier, and possible put May down a tier. Brock's accomplishments from Sun and Moon onward shouldn't be undersold, him being on Par with Olivia alone should put him in Elite 4 tier since Olivia is an Elite 4 (tier in the anime, member in the games) trainer in her own right. Plus his victory over Kiawe is much more impressive when you consider Kiawe had a type advantage and a Z-move and it didn't do anything to Steelix. May's on the opposite side of that, The reason Blaziken was able to hold its own against Sceptile is because of its type advantage so it's not quite on par in terms of strength. I also wouldn't undercut Dawn's Victory over her, since May has had Glaceon longer than Dawn had Piplup, and Dawn wasn't even halfway through her first journey yet while May was already traveling through a 3rd region by then. If anything that make's Dawn's Victory more impressive. With that I think swapping May and Brock's positions makes the most sense.
Glaceon had just evolved from Eevee a few days before May used it in battle against Dawn in the final. May wasn't even aware of Glaceon's abilities thats why her plan for using Secret Power on Piplup backfired. If she had used Venusaur or Wartortle in battle then she most probably would've won. And that wasn't May's 3rd region but 2nd bcoz she had just went to Sinnoh to participate in Wallace Cup and evolve her Eevee. She was still traveling in Johto before that. So technically that was her 2nd region 1. Hoenn 2. Johto And tbh I don't think Brock can beat May. Her Blaziken must've gotten a lot stronger it can definitely beat Brock's Steelix. And she's also got Venusaur and probably Blastoise as well by now. So she'll probably beat Brock in a gym battle.
Had the voice actress of May never had an infection in her throat, would the writers have the "Hoenn Princess" return once again in the XY anime? If so, would May be the first companion of Ash to have mega evolution instead of Brock & Misty? Would that help rank her over Goh?
Looking at these rankings I believe it’s perfectly unbiased and accurate. Granted I may think some in the C rank can be rearranged but even then it’s not much a change, could probably go either way. But overall I agree with this rankings.
Yeah, Iris is leagues above everyone else. Not surprised she is at the top. It’s heavily implied that Iris is the first person Cynthia had to use Mega Evolution in order to win.
I hope the writers in the future bring back Iris with more new powerful Pokémons. And some new battle gimmicks to help increase her chances of winning in battles.
Like imagine her owning a Latias that can mega evolve? A Flapple or Appleton that can Gigantamax? A Z Ring with a dragon Z crystal? Or a Terrastle for the Dragon Terra types?

Sure, Ash and Goh lost, but you did see Goh's skills in that fight. Plus, he often does have pokemon such as Intellion and Scizor that can dish out quite a bit of punishment, matching Ash's Sirfetch.

One thing i'm confused about is that everyone complains about Goh development being rushed, but Iris had most of her development happened off screen or well at least her road to being a champion happened off screen.
Not really, Iris was off screen for 3 seasons, and she was already skilled at the end of unova season. She had time between XY, sun and moon and pokemon journeys to where she got, id say its a reasonable time to get to where she got.
Clemont just went overkill in the team flare arc. He: Battles the admins to get into the gym Knocks out random grunts inside gym who are never seen again!? I agree with everyone, we need Rival Tier List. I honestly love your ranking, watched it with my brothers but them and I got along on the fact that we still don't get how May is so high on the list. Like sure she's a good trainer but an Elite 4 member? Most definitly not. I'm a Dawn fan so I would have loved to see her get in the top 4 but being honest she is not one of the four strongest Ash's companions. But Brock definitly IS. Honestly I feel like Clemont being before Brock is kinda illogical even if I see where it comes from. But yeah to me Brock and May should definitly switch positions. The video was really good and I loved how everything you said was justified!
If we're to count Leon or Daint as not a rival, which let's be honest he kinda was not, then we know who would be at the top in terms of friendship, not strength, it has flaws.
If we're to count Gary as a rival, which let's be honest he kinda was, then we know who would be at the top in terms of friendship and also willpower. Elljorindin7647 is a idiocy.
If my Pokemon OC, who I like to view as Ash's best friend, was in this list; he would probably be at either A or B trier. That is because when Ash first meets him during his Johto adventures he was a somewhat good but kinda lacked confidence Trainer. But then Ash helped him build his confidence and gave him some tips on Pokemon battling, he became a Trainer that can pretty much rival Ash himself, which is saying a lot.
I think I would put may behind misty cus misty has access to mega evolution and put up a fight against sun and moon pikachu with a type disadvantage and her other pokemon are also no slouch either but other than that Id probably move up serena to C, Brock Beside Clemont and thats it. I disagree, what makes May so special is her ability to stay composed even in the most demanding battles which is a skill she gained overtime. May definitely knows how to use her blaziken, otherwise she would not have defeated a literal absol and tied with a pokemon that was able to defeat a Darkrai. Moreover, she was able to defeat Zoe because she used beautifly, and had she used a more skilled Pokemon against Dawn, im sorry but Dawn would not have stood a chance

Not only that... Mega Steelix would solo all of Gohs mons except for maybe Cinderace (And that is due to type advantage).
May defeated Brock with her eevee..
You should watch may vs Brock
Marshtomp vs eevee
Glaceon had just evolved from Eevee a few days before May used it in battle against Dawn in the final. May wasn't even aware of Glaceon's abilities thats why her plan for using Secret Power on Piplup backfired. If she had used Venusaur or Wartortle in battle then she most probably would've won.
And that wasn't May's 3rd region but 2nd bcoz she had just went to Sinnoh to participate in Wallace Cup and evolve her Eevee. She was still traveling in Johto before that. So technically that was her 2nd region 1. Hoenn 2. Johto
And tbh I don't think Brock can beat May. Her Blaziken must've gotten a lot stronger it can definitely beat Brock's Steelix. And she's also got Venusaur and probably Blastoise as well by now. So she'll probably beat Brock in a gym battle.
Misty is stronger than May. Otherwise I agree with this list. I hate that Goh is so high, but I don't argue it.

@@Alexgodofwar5662 as someone who's never watched the original series, i think it's the chemistry she had with both Ash and Brock. Not to mention considering she was the first, any other pokegirl companion that has the same roasting-the-firetype out of each other chemistry with Ash people would think abt Misty first
She's a champion. It's hard to argue with that
no matter what...brock in the team is always entertaining....he is s tier
Agree with everything except Goh, he is weaker than May n Misty actually. Little battle experience, the project mew arc was useless and most of his battles or captures were handed over to him on a platter.
Big time
He was nothing more than a walking advertisement to promote Pokémon Go.
I can easily say that Serena is a C tear or B tear because, even she uses her Pokémon contests, she can be pretty powerful with her Sylveon and her Delfox
I'd have put Serena in the above average slot. she held her own against members of Team Flare. Brock & Misty should be in the Elite 4 slot together.
Ok xy fanboy
Team flare grunts are child's play
If this tier list kept all of today's rankings but was published maybe about 5 years ago, I could picture the Outrage from the community over Iris taking the top spot being able to KO Cynthia's Mega-Garchomp.
If she became champ at the end of black and white tho, might not be as much outrage
Goh being on top is awesome
Depends
@@eljordinio7647 well I understand the “controversy” around Goh but I really like him you gotta admit he’s pretty strong
@@comics4556 he got bodied by most legendaries and most of his fights weren't even official. His strongest opponent was probably Ileana and that's it
@@eljordinio7647 legendaries are powerful so it’s not a surprise and maybe some of his fights are weren’t official but still he a decently strong trainer compared to some of the other companions in this list
he cought 2 legendaries but he littelary lost almost all of the fights mentioned on the video, he beat ileana but the legendaries stomped him
Your tier is quite accurate however Iris is only champion because Alder retired…
Secondly, Max & Bonnie are just little kids even though they both traveled with Ash…
Finally..Goh definitely deserves a high ranked spot even though the writers screwed up his storylines…
Could also be that Iris actually beat him
There isnt any evidence that alder retired. It was never made clear whether alder lost to iris or alder retired.
Iris beat him, she confirmed that in the scene when she sent out Haxorus against Cynthia
@@eljordinio7647 Nope Could also be that iris did not actually beat him or her.
Nope, Could also be that iris did not actually beat him or her.
May only lost to Dawn because of plot
Dawn defeating may also felt like plot armor for me, on the other hand i understand dawn needed a win to get her confidence back.
Which is true
That Giga Goh in the thumbnail tho 💀
I think May is less strong than she is in here. Just because she has Blaziken it doesnt mean she knows how to use it. She literally froze during Sceptile battle and gave orders late. Other than Blaziken her team isnt strong as Dawns. Dawn has better battling career aside contest
@@haadgill1081 Sceptile was a trashbag in Hoenn season. In Battle Frontier he slowly recovered. Hes beaten darkrai in sinnoh league victors. like 2 seasons later. So Sceptile wasnt at his prime when he fought Blaziken yet almost won it because how May struggled to give commands to it.
just dont forget lana fought kyogre with primarina
I really wish May got to return back for more episodes, she showed a lot of protential. I know her VA had some health issues to not return but man, they could have recast her right?
I am staying hopeful. I need my girl to come back. I need to see my boy mega blaziken. Man hopes high. Loved that girl.
I think I read somewhere that in Japan, where the show "originally" aired, it is very disrespectful to recast a VA unless the VA has passed away. If it's correct, then that means that since the VA didn't die from the health issues, they cannot recast her.
In the anime, ralts promised to max that when he's 10 they will reunite with each other which means Max's pokemon in the future is a Gardevoir/galade. If he trains ralts and evolve her unlike ash's Bulbasaur and squirtle.
Just like Bonnie and zygarde, max gets the same treatment when he gets Gardevoir/ galade
Based, Dawn really was Ash's best female companion
In terms of likeability and development, definitely
This is about the strongest, not the most liked or who’s the best companion. The best companion and the strongest companion aren’t the same things and not even a personal favorite companion is necessarily the same either. Like for me Serena is my favorite yet I agree with her ranking here completely
@@gabecajamarca I mean Serena was mostly popular because of Ash x Serena Shipping. But Dawn had best development. Misty was good rival but she never really had her own arc when traveling with Ash. She was mostly there to be Ash's coach. Iris did not have her own arc either besides claiming that she wants to be a dragon master and calling Ash little kid from time to time. Dawn went through so much development. The fact that she did not make it to second round in contests twice was an important arc to her because she needed to improve. But somehow May always passed 1st round due to plot armor
@@jetguy128 2nd of all u totally missed the point of what I was trying to say. I was saying that Serena is my favorite yet I’m willing to admit she’s not the strongest. This video was about who’s the strongest, not whose the best. And Dawn is strong but she’s not the strongest. She can be anyone’s favorite but she’s not Ash’s strongest companion. Strongest, favorite and best aren’t mutually exclusive and I was using my favorite character to point that out
Guys Guys let's be for real.......... Iris solos all them side beaches 😎
The fact no one talks about how Chloe’s eevee is basically using the move copycat whenever it sees a move
goh has overpowered pokemons but as a trainer nah he isnt that strong or competend he got stomped by the legendaries even though his team was so strong, i have defeated legendaries with far worse teams i once accidentally one shotted an entei with a 32 lvl crocodil if not lower in the gen 2 game (fuck i wanted to cutch it 😭) and goh has all this strong pokemons and still lost so many times
Indeed. He mostly battled wild pokemon, not trainers. He is at least stronger than Cilan, Serena, and Alola Gang minus Kiawe.
Pretty much accurate
The thumbnail:
Serena: "Don't be intimidated. Just imagine him in his underwear."
Goh: (is buff)
Serena: "OH NO HE'S HOT!"
Before everything of this video really started, I told myself Iris has to be very top somewhere. She's was the only one other than Ash to compete in the World Championship. I was indeed right, no. 1 is her place. She earn her way there.
Honestly, I always love May's Pokemon contest more than Dawn. Idk if that's because it was first introduce into Hoenn, but i do like May personality more than Dawn. She is also a tough one compare to Ash's other female companions. Wish we could see more of Misty though. She is always the favorite female companion of all.
This listing though is great and rather accurate. You should do Team Rockets pokemon team companions as a ranking. Which team they did have best winning results and all or so minus all their losses which is what they're known for other than trying to steal Pikachu.
Goh is the best.
It just feels sad that the anime never gave Max a proper Pokémon team.
And he never will. Ash is 10 and he's younger so unless he gets to be 10 he can't become a Pokemon trainer and that will never happen since they don't age. Big oof
there's nothing i would change from the list except the fact that brock is elite four level he deserves more
