Linda Hamilton is so bad ass, and was probably the best most well trained and adapted actor for “operator” badassery until John Wick 2 Keanu.
Besides being totally tough and fit, she handles her firearms great, and reacting consistently smart and fast; it’s especially stand out in the small detail of the scene where she grabs the doctor over the table.
She crosses her arms to grab him by the shirt collar and pull him in that way, which is a subtle effective professional security enforcer type move.

What a lot of people don't appreciate about this film is just how much they leaned on practical effects. A lot of the 'liquid' metal bladed weapon scenes were shot with actual metal props. A lot of the "shotgun crater" effects were also practical costume props - they opened with springs. It was only for the shots where the T1000 'heals' that they used CG to slowly show the wounds closing. The atomic horror scenes had double shots, negative manipulation, and extensive use of miniatures. The helicopter under the bridge was an insane stunt pilot and a real helicopter under a bridge. The CG gets a lot of attention because it was so groundbreaking at the time, but the glue that held this movie together was still good old fashioned practical effects.

@@spextrekid9410 Wolfie was just a fake name that Arnold used a a trap to figure out if the person on the phone was the real foster mother or if it was the T-1000. Because the T-1000 didn't know the dog's name until afterwards when it checked the collar, it assumed Wolfie was the correct name and responded that "Wolfie was fine", which was how Arnold figured out that it was the T-1000. The real foster mother would have known that the dog's name was not Wolfie. Basically, Arnold baited the T-1000 into making a mistake.

    My favorite facts:
In the lore, the T-1000 is so dangerous that Skynet itself only creates one at a time and then destroys it when its use is over.
The security guard double was played by twins.
Robert Patrick, the T-1000, did, what only could be called super human, training. That emotionless sprint is all him; that first chase he accidentally kept catching John on the dirtbike - that's how fast he was! He only blinks twice in the film: once when talking to Todd and his wife, and once on accident when firing a gun (Robert would say he wished they did another take).
Just about every movie after this one for _YEARS_ had a small cameo scene of Robert Patrick in a police uniform and stern expression. My favorite of the cameos is likely "Last Action Hero" where the kid in the film passes by Robert in uniform giving the possible T-1000 a wide berth and a terrified expression!

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I still prefer the normal cut version.
I like all of those extra scenes that explain better some decisions, but I take them just like that: "extra scenes".
In a well made movie you don't actually need to see everything to understand the next scene and this movie IS well made.
In the original cut you can still follow the story and the characters motivations even if it doesn't take you by the hand.
It keeps the pace is more fluid and quick to the point, not slowing down the action for too long.

I feel the theatrical cut is better in the theater, you're right and including most of the extra stuff would drag and extend a little too much. That cut keeps up the pace and feel better. But for a rewatch at home I think the extended version has a lot of merit, I prefer having those scenes to not. Most of them are a lot of fun to watch and the pacing problem isn't so bad in the more casual atmosphere. I'll gladly accept the counter opinions though, the movie's great either way and I don't blame anyone who prefers the original cut.

As I said (because I'm afraid sometime I'm not clear) I'm glad those extra scenes exist.
I actually like all the *canon* extra scenes possible in every movie, because... hey, MORE MOVIE.
But I consider these ones as the unused "extras" you usually find in the DVD.
I prefer the movie as it was, if I have to watch it again.
The only exception is just the mentioned "glitched feet" scene.
I'm ok with the part where the T1000 starts to glitch, because it answer the question "why now they can beat him, when he was invulnerable for the rest of the movie?"
Keep it or cut it, it doesn't change that much.
But the part were *John* needs to see the feet to tell which one is his mother, really dumbs him down and makes the scene less cool.

This is one of three core cinema memories for me.
Partly of course because of the reveal that Arnold isn't the bad guy, but mostly because the cgi effects were so state of the art at that time, that it almost literally blew my mind sitting in the theatre watching it on the big screen.
In the scene at the mental institution, when the T-1000 melts through the metal bars, I absolutely LOVE how Cameron makes sure to show individual shots of every present character turning their head to look at him before he does it.
Because sitting in the theatre back in the day you're absolutely thinking "What the hell?! Did I just see that?", and you know you did, because everybody on screen saw it aswell!

You're sweet to be astonished by the treatment Sarah received in the institution. Tightening up regulations and laws regarding patient safety have made a big difference in recent years, but back when I did that kind of work, I ran into plenty of patients who had clearly been abused by their caretakers. Most were non-verbal, and were not capable of telling us what happened to them, which makes it even more disgusting and awful. The saddest case for me was a nonverbal woman with a high level of intellectual disability who was very quiet and docile most of the time, but would lose her MIND if any man came within a few feet of her and would get combative. Because she can't tell us, we don't know for sure what happened. . . but it's pretty obvious. And since she's been in institutions most of her life, it was in all likelihood someone whose job it was to take care of her and protect her. The sad truth is the job attracts mostly decent people who want to help, but it does give predators a chance to victimize incredibly vulnerable people.

Some of the guard side people at those sites were doing inappropriate things to prisoners in a retaliatory power play ways, which they informed me of somewhat.
Not at all an excuse for abuse and criminality, but with a violent non-compliant patient there might be more “”what are you going to do now, B-word”” vs “”I want to do adult things to you”” sort of mentality behind this heinous creep move.

IN regards to your question about how people in sanitorioums were treated "Where people really treated like that?" No, it was worst. Up until (iirc) the 17th century people in mental hospitals were chained and punished for being aflicted with whatever condition they had. A dude named Phillipe Pinel is usually regarded as one of the pioneers of treating patients,....well, as human beings. During the 1800 & 1900s some other folks did their own part in helping the transformation of how mental health problems are seen and people with afflictions treated (a woman lastname Dix helped a lot with that in the USA). So glad how far we've come in many places in these terms :'c

This was the extended director's cut, which is indeed well worth watching. The chief difference is the very ending, which makes it explicit that yes, they did manage to change the future for the better. This scene was not used in the theatrical version (Cameron decided it was "too sweet" and tonally inconsistent with the rest of the film). Instead, after Arnold is melted, the theatrical version just has Sarah musing in voiceover about how "the unknown future rolls towards us", but now there is at least hope.
The other main additions in the extended version are these: More mistreatment of Sarah in the mental hospital, making us really hate the guards there. The dream scene where Kyle visits her. The chip removal scene, where they open the Terminator's head to reset his CPU to learning mode (in the theatrical version, he simply says that he will learn ever more about humans by being in close contact with them, as if his learning mode was active the whole time). The scene where John teaches the Terminator to smile. An extra scene with Miles Dyson and his family, establishing that he is innocent and well-intentioned. More philosophical dialogue between John and the Terminator (John asks if he is ever afraid to die, etc.) Finally, the scenes where the morphing ability of the T-1000 glitches after it has been frozen and thawed are not in the theatrical version.

    • @LegnaiaUnderground

What's actually really fun about the Arnold-nator and the T-1000 intro scene is even if you know the twist in advance (when I was a film student, a LOT of classic film twists were spoiled during lectures where we broke down how movies work to make their audience feel the "right" emotions) you still feel the same tension because you functionally swap POV characters from John into the Arnold-nator; if you don't know the twist then all the information you have is what John Connors knows and the fear is of the unknown man who seems to be chasing him, but if you do know the twist, you see the Terminator's perspective because your information matches his and the scenes have a different flavor of suspense to them instead of just unfocused anxiety.

This movie had a lot more emotional depth than the first one, that's why I think I like it a lot more. James Cameron has some other really good movies too. 46:49 was directly referenced in Kung Fu Panda 2 when Po rode the gear up in the factory to meet Lord Shen and 48:32 was directly referenced in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish when Big Jack Horner sinks. T1 and T2 for me, no other Terminator movies exist.

This happy ending scene is unfortunately the beginning of the "time travel works differently in every movie to justify it's story" tradition of the series...

I've got the directors cut on dvd, there the original ending was kept intact, which I really loved because the little extra scènes do add a lot; the t1000 glitching at the end, the dream sequence with the Reese appearance, brutality at the hospital and the learning switch for Arnold. After watching the theatre version first, this offered more clarification. (Without the "old sarah" ending, I mean)

The ending for the directors cut is silly because Sarah committed so many crimes in this movie she'd be in prison for life.

That licking sarah connor in the face never gets old. Theres the essence of ketchup, mustard and mayonaise in it. ❤

Yeah. Mental institutions really were hell on earth for so many patients. Still happens in some nursing homes too. Anything with that kind of built-in power gap can become a hotpot of abuse : /

I was very confident that you'd enjoy this after your reaction to the first. Even for those of us who weren't into the Terminator, the buzz about the special effects was enormous. However that would have meant nothing if it weren't for a tight story and excellent acting. Really a wonderful effort by everyone involved, and definitely a milestone film. Thank you for sharing your reaction to it!

6:24 Consider that there are Humans of all races who have no issue asserting themselves over those they deem inferior or lesser. It was and still is an unfortunate reality to this day.

T2, Empire Strikes Back, Lethal Weapon 2, Godfather 2, Aliens are probably better than their legendary first movies.
