I think Tim Roth should've won for Rob Roy. Spacey was good, but I think Roth was better. I don't think anyone could've pulled Cunningham off like Roth did, that role was truly an acting part. He gave one of the best performances ever. If you haven't seen his performance in it, go watch Rob Roy, you won't be disappointed.

However, if one were to argue, the "protagonists" - for the lack of the better word - are a toss between Chazz Palminteri and Gabriel Byrne; more so the former, because it is through the perspective of Agent Kujan that we're unravelling the mystery of the fire on the dock which was the catalyst to the entire narrative in the first place. Not even Keaton was close in driving the story; he was the hub of the plot, but he also was technically a passive participant (he did what Verbal's lies dictate him to do).

I still think Tim Roth should have won this. Spacey was good, Brad Pitt was also good in 12 Monkeys, but Roth was better than both IMO, but hey, maybe Roth will do a role where he could get another Oscar nod and win, he's given at least two performances, IMO, where he should have won Oscars, Reservoir Dogs and this. There are other movies he could have gotten Oscar nominations for, Legend of 1900 is an example he could have gotten an nomination, but he didn't and this is all my opinion.

I think the characters in this movie were an ensemble. There wasn't really a 'lead' actor. To the person who thinks that this movie is overrated, all of the actors excelled, whether they were playing the cops or the robbers. Although the style of the film was noir-ish, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the performances.

1994 was really his year. He did a dramatic departure from what he normally does in acting with with this film. It's such an odd, complex, twisted sort of thing--the movie overall. He was also a solid domestic husband on the brink in "The Ref." A psychotic obsessed with fulfilling the legacy of the deadly sins in "Seven." And the ultimate Hollywood producer and boss you'd pray never to have in "Swimming With Sharks." What a record. Of course he won. It was for the whole year.

Spacey was good, Brad Pitt was also good in 12 Monkeys, but Roth was better than both IMO, but hey, maybe Roth will do a role where he could get another Oscar nod and win, he's given at least two performances, IMO, where he should have won Oscars, Reservoir Dogs and this. There are other movies he could have gotten Oscar nominations for, Legend of 1900 is an example he could have gotten an nomination, but he didn't and this is all my opinion.

Love that usual suspects won both academy awards it was nominated for. But why tf was it nominated for only two? Like where was the best picture Oscar? Best Director Oscar? Cinematography? Maybe even other supporting actor nominations like for Benicio del Toro?
reviews were mixed for the movie. some hated it and some loved it. it wasn't a huge commercial success either, at that time. It's all politics.

I think the characters in this movie were an ensemble. There wasn't really a 'lead' actor. To the person who thinks that this movie is overrated, all of the actors excelled, whether they were playing the cops or the robbers. Although the style of the film was noir-ish, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the performances.

1994 was really his year. He did a dramatic departure from what he normally does in acting with with this film. It's such an odd, complex, twisted sort of thing--the movie overall.
He was also a solid domestic husband on the brink in "The Ref." A psychotic obsessed with fulfilling the legacy of the deadly sins in "Seven." And the ultimate Hollywood producer and boss you'd pray never to have in "Swimming With Sharks." What a record.
Of course he won. It was for the whole year.
