- Movie endings, they're usually pretty straight forward right? Everything pays off, the main characters learn something, and our heroes ride off into the sunset. Sometimes though, we don't get the typical ending from a movie, we get something much more nuanced, complex and open ended. The kind of endings that leave things up in the air for all of us to debate and theorize on until we're blue in the face. With Movie Endings Explained, we aim to delve into some of the more ambiguous and mysterious endings to films that have left audiences scratching their heads for years, and to attempt to explain them. In most cases, a definitive answer isn't really there, so we definitely want to hear from YOU on how you interpret the various endings we'll be discussing with this series.
THE USUAL SUSPECTS was the movie that put Bryan Singer on the map, long before he ever tackled X-MEN, and long before he became such a controversial figure in Hollywood, following troubling allegations that have persisted over the years. But, in 1995, Singer was just another young filmmaker making what was perceived, initially, to be a Quentin Tarantino clone, but wound up becoming a seminal film in its own right - with an ending that blew people away. But who really is Keyser Söze? Let's look into it in this week's edition of Movie Endings Explained!

The rewatch where you can notice Verbal's eyes looking over the board and glancing up at the bottom of Kujan's cup show this is a masterfully done narrative.
And enjoying rewatching every scene with Kaiser 'observing' his operation from the inside .. gives new depth to Kobiashi also who would know the boss is in the room but never look to him for reaction... the perfect 2nd for the puppet-master. 🧐

one of the most often overlooked clues is the scene where the camera goes 360 around all of our heroes and Kobayashi. you see verbal Kent light a cigarette with a gold lighter while a gold watch is visible. then when Keyser soze kills in the beginning of the movie. you notice he has the same watch and the seem lighter it was right there in front of you
There is also a subtle tell when Kujan grabs hin and Verbal blocks him with his 'limp' arm.
And when Kujan mentions "how to spot a killer," "Verbal" looks momentarily concerned.

The shot of Kujan dropping the coffee mug is just absolutely amazing. You kick yourself for not seeing sooner that Verbal was pulling strings all along and in fact, Verbal was Kaiser Soze.

...or is it that Virgil (furious that Kujan is setting them up) starts gathering information in Kujon , just on case Kujon (is?/works4?) may lead Virgil to identifying "K-S" (if there's such an individual whatsoever) ??? 🤔🤗🤣

Precisely. Only the actors’ scripts made it that “anyone of them could be Soze” because it was tactic to stir the pot for the final twist. Apparently the reveal of Kint being Soze really pissed off Gabriel Byrne that he and Singer had heated words after the film’s premiere; they quickly made up though
What if he wasn't? What if, its just an alias? What if there is no keyzer soze at all?? What if Kobayashi was Soze? We have watched the whole movie through the eyes of Verbal, we don't know if that is true, but though the first scene with the golden lighter and gold watch and the ending scene relates Verbal as Soze, we are made to believe that. the first scene might be an imagination too, who knows😂

@@ShubhamMishrabro well, he was made to believe that because Verbal was the one to kill all the others, or the Hungarian survivor only saw him killing the rest, but it doesn't give any proof that Verbal is Soze, or any of that sort.

I don't mean to be that guy, but it's not Kujan's office, it's Sgt. Rabin's office.
This is an important comment actually. They intentionally wrote the story for Kujan to be in someone else's office - precisely so that he would not recognize the names and stories Verbal was telling off that board. While I was watching this very video, I actually thought how important that little detail was.

After he said "his own office" the second time, I had to close the video. If he got wrong something so basic, I don't see the point of listening to anything else.

another thing to mention about the kobayashi and verbal scene: when asked "who do you work for?", if you pay attention to his eyes, for a SPLIT second you'll notice he briefly looks at Verbal before returning his gaze to the asker and replying: l work for Kaiser Soze"
The scenes from the story were all fabricated though. Not sure you can take anything from them given they are lies from Verbal.

Last week I was in San Pedro, California. I Went to the Friendship park/ Korean friendship bell where the "Redfoot" scenes were filmed and then to the San Pedro Municipal building where the finale/Soze reveal street scene was filmed. It was so cool to visit these 2 spots and stand where 2 of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies was filmed. They still look exactly the same.
The first time I watched this movie I was on LSD, and you'd have to high as shit to not think Verbal wasn't Keyser Soze.

Saw this when it first came out. Still love it, even with Spacey's tainted legacy.
Suggestion for us _all,_ from now on we watch Spacey's movies or TV shows, for _only_ for the entertainment they bring us. Nothing to do with his personal life or poor choices at all. Qe can enjoy whatever we want to with no regrets or moral issues. As there are many other actors in these films too. This applies to his already made content only though. As we _really_ don't want 'Hollywood' to make money with him anymore. However, his past 'creative projects' don't make him money, _if_ we already own them. We just watch & enjoy ourselves. Does this sound like an okay plan?? 🤗

Verbal IS Keyser and "Kobayashi" is just his right hand man/assistant. I think Keyser gave Kujan fake names for all the ppl involved including his assistant but that the story was true. He made a point of saying he's not a rat, and jumped hoops to eliminate someone who ratted HIM out with the whole rouse to hijack the boat. I think "Kobayashi" and Keyser pretended not to know each other to fool the other four. And I think Keyser made a point of killing the rat on the boat himself because he wanted to be sure it was done and that no one would talk about it later.
Kujan saying keaton was Keysor doesn’t make sense!! Kujan would’ve known Keaton was dead by his body being found on the dock!! Keaton was Keysor!

Kaiser failed in the end. Someone got his image out. The whole mission was to stop this being exposed. Great film but sadly Kasier fails. He looks cool leaving but now they know him. Wasn't the whole point so they never would.
But he could just disappear and they'll never find him.
Maybe but the whole point was to never be recognised and now he his. Before he could swoosh...he was gone but now.... I didn't really think about until a while after watching the film. I love the ending and the reveal but it is slightly ruined by the fact that ultimately he failed the whole reason why he put himself in such jeopardy. It's cool but flawed.

Des Derek The informant who was on the boat that the Argentinians were going to trade is dead. Kaiser got rid of him so he can never testify in court. The Hungarian who described what he looked like for the sketch artist died. They may have a sketch artists drawing if Soze (assuming that the video theory is wrong and that is not his henchman Kobayashi) but everybody that could have testified against him in court is dead. There are no witnesses and no loose ends. Sounds like an overrall win to me.

Well, one thing for certain, the real Verbal Kint is swimming with the fishes, because Soze needed someone weak of the five that he could use as cover, and Kint fit perfectly in what he wanted, and it not a twist, but a double twist, the first twist meant to be predictable, that Keaton was Keyser Soze, only to the rug be pulled under your feet and be reveal that Kint was Keyser Soze.

I read somewhere that apparently, Gabriel Byrne, was led to believe that he was Keyser Soze during the filming of 'The Usual Suspects' and was so surprised, seeing the finished movie, during the premier that he got into an argument with either Bryan Singer or Christopher McQuarrie in the parking lot after it.

I don't think the comment that Verabal is holding Soze's lighter and watch holds up. Assuming the latter is real, his reputation is clearly fierce enough that no one would ever smoke his cigarettes or use his lighter without asking permission first.
To me, the genius of the movie is that Verbal has to give enough truth to align his story with details that Kujan can independently verify. For example, Verbal probably was in the lineup, because it would be on record. Verbal doesn't necessarily know how quickly they could dig that information up. Given that Kujan has a history with Keaton, he might have even already reviewed reports about the lineup. That would be too risky.
So Verbal can only lie about moments where there are no living witnesses... So the conversation in lockup and encounters with Kobayashi are probably made up. Stop to think that it may not have even been Pollak that pulled off the heist that got them all arrested at the beginning (no one else in the room is alive to confirm his reaction). The heists and interactions with the police would be real.
So Verbal had to use a lot of truth to conceal a few lies that would allow him to slip away.
The same man that wrote and directed the last two Mission Impossible movies, which shows Christopher knows how to build tension like a boss. The Usual Suspects is one of my favourite movies from the 90s.

It’s not Kujan’s office; it’s that LAPD detective’s office. That’s how Kujan didn’t catch on until the end.
I always found this movie a pain in the ass to watch because the entire point of raiding the boat was to kill the one man who could identify kaiser zoze, but by the end of the movie, the plan goes tits up to such a degree that the entire police department knows what he looks like! And sure, while he might be able to disappear entirely, which is what was implied in the movie, he might as well have done that anyway and not risked the boat assault at all in that case.
Someone please explain to me why I am wrong, because if it weren't for the ending where EVERYONE finds out who he is, I would actually like this movie
The guy on the boat is not only going to tell what he looks like. He was going to turn informant. He could be put on a witness stand to testify in court. The police could get him to confirm all kinds of crimes Soze had commited had others commit. He could have led law enforcement to all kinds of evidence but now he can't because Soze silenced him.

also it’s important to understand that, according to Keiser’s plan, nobody was supposed to survive the boat. He didn’t know that the Hungarian dude had survived, (which he got very lucky too), and didn’t know about the sketch, which something that could’ve fucked him over.

The only question I had after watching this movie was: when was Keyzer committing his profitable crimes if he had to spend so much time hunting just one witness? And considering that after executing his entire overcomplicated plan he has left another witness and lighted up, and the police now has his photo and fingerprints, this looks like a really shoddy job.

At the beginning of the movie the Kaiser character takes a piss on the boat, then later in the movie Kint says he has a problem where his piss is thick and like mucus. (or something like that). Further confirming Kint is Soze. 🕵🏻♂️

Tnis, this movie was the first time I saw a twist so cool and crazy that my child brain almost exploded!
Just watched it for the first time and to be honest I expected Kint to be Sosye the entire time, I just wasn’t sure how it all worked out. It was a great reveal at the end, even if I’m a bit confused about why he had to go through such an investigation if he was already given immunity.
Same, there were a few times when somebody would say the name Sosye and it would cut immediately to a shot of Kint, and I thought it was too on-the-nose. The way Kint would talk about Sosye reminded of the bad guy from Fast and Furious 4, too haha. The villain who was right under your nose. But I enjoyed the film nevertheless.
This is a movie where I can separate the art from the artists (Spacey and Singer) due to how well the film is made. The acting is insanely good, Singer’s direction is tight & McQuarrie’s script is loaded with unique turns and the final twist is his best

Hi! I love what you've done here, and I see the point in making a video (since you are a content creator and a clear fan of the film). I love your videos and it makes me consider things I haven't before. There is a 'but' here. He has the gold watch and lighter at the end, but he doesn't hand them to "Kobayashi". He pockets them and gets into the car. Also, "Verbal" is the only one in the lineup to not blink when the lights hit his face during the lineup. That's an interesting detail, imo. Anyway, I'll keep watching if you keep creating. Thank you for making this video, and thanks in advance for everything you do from here on out.
I think Verbal was Keyser but if you want to argue the Kobayashi angle, Verbal says "Keyser Soze - or whatever you want to call him - he knows where I am right now. He's got the front burner under your ass to let me go so he can scoop me up ten minutes later."
We know they were pressured to release Verbal asap and he is literally scooped up by Kobayashi as soon as he leaves.
Everyone is adamant Verbal is Soze. But there was never a Keyser Soze, only Roger "Verbal" Kint. That was "the devil's" greatest trick.
Wrong 😂. Why was a man who could identify Soze being bought and sold? Plus the hospitalised Hungarian described Soze. All signs point to Verbal is Soze.

Very good video. I never questioned, after the 3rd or 4th watching, that Kaiser Soze was Verbal Kint. Really I still think that, but great food for thought!!!
My personal theory...
Keyser Soze is, as was mentioned in the film, a criminal world boogeyman. Who he is played up to be in the film is all conjecture, 3rd+ hand accounts, and unverified claims of working for him.
I do believe that someone in the world of this film once fit the description of Soze.
But, as with all myths & legends, they are far more useful as a compelling story than as a definitive fact.
I would argue that Kint & Kobayashi are really just exceptionally good con men that convinced everyone that the Devil was real, and they were able to do so because everyone else was willing to believe it.
This also applies to the Hungarian mobster in the hospital.
There is no Keyser Soze. At least not a person as professed to in the movie.

I just watched it a couple hours ago, 25 years after. It is really a great plot twist, and nobody spoiled me the finale, like the sixth sense or the others. I tried to watch this some years ago but the beginning of the movie is slow, dense and boring and I gave up, I´m glad I finally made it

That wasn’t Kujons office that Kint sat in. So clearly he could cherry pick ideas from the board without Kujon knowing. It wasn’t his office and the guy it belonged to was never in the office while Kint was cherry picking. Very clear, and we’ll done. Missed that one

I think the reason verbal isn't shown being arrested is because he, as Keyser Soze, orchestrated the whole lineup as the beginning is not narrated by verbal the narration only starts when he is brought in to the customs officer

Well some things did happen, them setting a cop car on fire actually happened, the shoot out at the parking spot where they stole the brief case actually happened and some other things.

I think most of it was true. But kujan kept saying -Tell me every detail. So I think verbal made up the details, so that kujan would believe him.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they all where in on it and faked their deaths. Keaton has done it before and the money was at the docks but police never said they had it. The guy who saw him how would he know? The one guy who knew what he looked like was killed on the boat

You forgot a very big clue. If you got it you would know instantly that Verbal was Kaiser Soze.

Excellent video! BUT - the office was NOT that of Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) but was borrowed from Sergeant Jeff Rabin (Dan Hedaya) for the interview with Verbal! 👍
With all its twists, turns and deviousness there is definitely a sneaking suspicion that this is one of those scripts which were written backwards from the end to the beginning to fit the facts to suit the climax. The only problem is that on a closer look the narrative lacks integrity and clarity and there are any number of red herrings to muddy up matters. Perversely it could make for a very interesting movie for an undemanding audience. Of course in the hands of a clever director like Singer and with a good cast it becomes quite credible.
It is supposed to be like that. Verbal made up the story just enough to fool the cops and escape. It is not supposed to be a perfect story.
His lighter is the same too - Kasier Soze - at the beginning when he kills Keaton, and at the end when he (Spacey) lights his cig.

I _loved_ watching this movie with each of my children, for their 1st time seeing it. It was _so_ hard to not drop hints to them throughout it though.😆😆
This movie has a major plot hole.Why would they take the word of a known con man about anything without a ton of evidence? They could have least have kept him on some charge for little a while while they proved or disproved his story.,
By that time it was already arranged that he had immunity. Were not given the details on that but its not unlikely that he may have bribed that in aswell, given his immense wealth and power. As far as proving or disproving, enough of his story matched with the police's timeline, and evidence they had, theories they had, and nobody else survived except for a man in a coma, but they cant hold a person on the whim the coma patient might wake up. The police also never really suspected Vergal, they bought his act. This means his story lined up with their preconceived notions or bias from teh start.
You are right, in the real world there is more they could possibly have done to vet the story, but thats the point of the movie, the lie. The story was designed for the cops, it was designed to tell enough of the truth, to match with what they would know, and designed to be framed in jsut the right way to align with what they believed regardless, and let the police, not Vergal, come to the conclusion of who the bad guy really was. He never says it, he doesnt imply it, the police come to that conclusion, and he plays off them. They thought they heared everything they needed, had all the evidence they needed, and some cripple with a chronic illness who was at best small time potatoes ratted them out because a DA took pity on him for his disability. Nobody checks the fridge for the milk if they are told its there, and they remember buying it, and thats all he did.
Kint Is keyser soze because nobody would believe a cripple could be that ruthless and make stuff up. Verbal kint was keyser soze as much younger man. He vanished and came up with the cripple personae. His lawyer pulled all the strings
I don’t view it as a complete fabrication, he just changed up the names and places. So many contrarian film students are making none sense videos claiming it’s all false or that Soze isn’t real. I believe the answer is straight, Verbal was Soze, the lighter was the key clue.

I took it as Verbal was Kaiser Soze for this particular situation but not the mythical figure he was referring to who killed his own family.
The hole in the plot for me...how did Verbal get immunity, who gave him that deal & why did they make it happen, & how does that fit with everything else. Doesn't make sense as far as I can tell.

That's my take. Kints a professional flim flam con artist who can make up a epic heist story just reading adverts off a billboard. He could be mostly a crook maybe a killer who has invented slowly the myth of a super international criminal as one of his many tall tales far exaggerating his own exploits out of proportion.

The story Verbal Kint narrates is the true and accurate account however all the names he used were from the office he was in..........
The collegue of Kujan was listening from the other room from what I understood watching the film and the office was his not kujan's and he read the file as he was explaining to kuyan how the DA didnt manage to get a hold onto verbal, so no he didnt insert himself in the lineup, also Giancarlo Esposito character asks him, You got the cripple there from NY"

A wonderful analysis, but there is absolutely no doubt that Verbal Kent is indeed Kaiser Soze. He looks Turkish whereas the Lawyer fellow is distinctly Japanese!! There are just two left the lawyer and VK --it has to be VK. Finally while relating about KS and why he became a mass assassin, VK talks about KS' will power and that will power and defiance VK certainly has , when he feigns all through the film ,as being an idiotic cripple. The COP is definitely a garrulous moron. The way Kevin Spacey transforms from being a cripple to becoming a normal purposeful Man is simply brilliant. The greatest 30 seconds I have ever watched!!
here's a subtle clue, Verbal was never shown being interrogated, the other four men were
that "orca fat" with the camera moving to the *let's say "plus size"* Black woman always cracks me up

You’re all forgetting one important thing, the Hungarian burns victim. He identified Keyser to a FBI artist and that sketch looked alot like Verbal. Case closed everyone.

Dubious implication that Verbal was Kaiser Soze and that [h]e walked away "Scott Free." (Kevin Spacey adjustment issues notwithstanding). Verbal Kint never went behind the ropes but stopped just short of them. This is shown in the second viewing during Verbal's story. It's an indication that he was never behind the ropes, because nobody was really there.
Verbal Kint was Keyser. His identity in the fax bolsters that claim. According to Jack Baer, Verbal was apprehended at the scene. This was established by a detective at the dock speaking to Jack Baer from Customs that a "cripple from New York" was in custody. Keyser's identity and likeness was verified by the witness in the hospital, completely independent of Verbal's story with Agent Cujan.
Joe Blo may have to watch this movie again.
Jack Baer had actually heard about the infamous Soze before, independent of any events in the film!
That scene on the boat with Keaton and Keyser, it could also be Kobayashi he recognised. It actually makes more sense.
I always wondered if the Hungarian mobster that survived at the end and described Soze, was the same Hungarian that was released when Soze murdered his family back in Turkey.

We all discuss this theories back whet i came out.Watched it at least once a week in the theaters .Then we bough a VHS (still keep it) and watch it even more times .Bring many friends with us too who bacame also massive fans of the movie.Before internet came even close...Good all times.

I only just finished seeing the movie now and am kicking myself i didnt see it coming.
I often thought the lawyer was the big bad and kint was one of the only men he trusted to know his identity.
Now i need to rewatch the movie tommorow..

When you said he "inserted himself" in things like the line-up scene and was never there, wouldn't that be impossible to tell Cujan considering they'd know if he was in the line-up and investigated?
Also are we going to forget the drawing the burnt Hungarian describes confirms that Keyser is Verbal
He also straight up admits that he killed Keaton himself during the interview, but Kujan doesn't hear it.
Also pretty much everything happened major that occurred DID happen, that wasn't made up. Only the specific details are stuff that Verbal tweaked to steer Kujan. About 90-95% of the details are corroborated by the police, it's only specifics like names that are different and exactly how many people are involved.
There's only 2 real cock-ups in the whole thing, when Kujan asks about Kaiser Soze and Verbal is FURIOUS because he was just going to dance around that, but Kujan forced his hand, so to speak. And when he straight up admits to killing Keaton while Kujan is yelling at him, but realizes what he said and changes it to seeing keaton get shot, and relaxes when he realizes Kujan didn't hear him the first time.
However, that only happened because Arkosh Kovosh survived. If not for him, Kujan would've not asked about Kaiser Soze, and Verbal would've played with him the whole time and then largely gotten away scot-free, and if Kujan suspected anything, he'd just think Verbal had hidden details and actually knew where Keaton was hiding or something.
i think the reality is that Keaton KNEW Verbal was Kaiser Soze, due to helping him fake his death, which is why he's starring at Verbal while in the holding cell and telling them that he wants nothing to do with any of them and they can all go to hell. Also Kobayashi TWICE looks to Verbal when talking about Soze.
So I think most of the details are true, just with minor tweaks to put himself as a bit of an outsider looking in, and edge the story towards Keaton and McManus being the main leaders of the events leading up to the ship. While most of what we see IS true, especially the parts with regard to other characters, while most of the stuff revolving around what Verbal is doing is probably untrue (except for the murder of Saul Berg, who as a cocaine trafficer is one of Soze's enemies, and probably arranged things to get them togther to bump off a few of his enemies and liabilities, but has been forced to go underground ANYWAY because of Kovosh surviving).
@@ZanathKariashi wait I totally missed where he admitted it in the interview which part was that? Also you bring up some great points, but the one thing I'd disagree on is Keaton knowing he was Soze. If you look back at the scene where he figured it out in the beginning on the movie it was more of a reaction like "I should've known," the pieces didn't fall in place for him until he finally saw it. Also I don't think he helped fake Keaton's death it seemed he was unaware that occurred as well, but that could've also been an act and he did set it up.
@@ZanathKariashi Soze went undercover as Kint before. He served time in jail with Keaton to gain his trust. Keaton completely trusted Kint, and vouched for him, which convinced McManus etc to accept Kint as part of the gang.
You're clearly forgetting the opening scene of the movie if you seriously claim that "Keaton KNEW Verbal was Kaiser Soze", as this scene completely debunks that.
